Health › Chain-smoking Toddler Gives Up Cigarettes by Jarus(op): 2:30pm On Nov 23, 2013
A toddler who shocked the world with his chain smoking has kicked the habit - but he’s piled on the weight ever since. Aldi Rizal, now aged five, was first discovered three years ago in a poor village in Sumatra, Indonesia, puffing on a cigarette while riding his tricycle.
He soon became a media sensation and the public outcry led to the Indonesia Government launching a campaign to stop children smoking. It also organised special rehabilitation treatment to help Aldi quit.

He was taken for play therapy sessions in Jakarta for two weeks to take his mind off his 40-a-day habit and learn to be a normal toddler.
A new documentary series revisits the family two years on to find out how Aldi is getting on, and reveals he has managed to stay off the cigarettes.

During his rehabilitation treatment, Aldi saw psychiatrists who encouraged his mum to keep him busy with playing and taught her about the dangers of smoking.
One of them , Dr Kak Seto still sees Aldi and his family at regular intervals to ensure he is not falling back into old habits.
His mother Diane helped him kick the habit. His mum, Diane, 28, said: “There are many people still offering Aldi cigarettes, but Aldi says no. He says ‘I love Kak Seto. He would be sad if I started smoking again and made myself ill’.

“At first we were weaning Aldi off the cigarettes he would have terrible tantrums and I would call Dr Seto for help. But now he doesn’t want them.”

However Diane’s now worried about her son’s weight as he developed food cravings while quitting smoking. Diane said the strong-willed little boy now demands food in the same way he used to beg for cigarettes and the family struggles not to give in to his tantrums.

Diane said: “When Aldi first quit smoking, he would demand a lot of toys. He would bang his head on the wall if he couldn’t get what he wanted. That’s why I get him cigarettes in the first place – because of his temper and his crying. Now I don’t give him cigarettes, but he eats a lot. With so many people living in the house it’s hard to stop him from getting food.” Now Aldi has been advised to go on a healthier diet to lose weight. He now also helps his mum Diane and dad Mohamed out on their market stall where his bright bubbly character and cheekiness win him lots of attention.

Diane admitted; “I feel happy when people want to speak to him because they know him. But I feel annoyed when they refer to him as ‘the smoking kid’. It makes me feel like they are accusing me of being a bad parent.” Dianne and Mohammed decided to take Aldi to a nutritionist for medical checks and now they’ve been given advice on how to put him on a healthier diet so he can start to lose some weight. Nutritionist Fransisca Dewi said: “Aldi is very overweight, his weight doesn’t match his age. His ideal weight is 17kg to 19kg. He’s 24kg already. I think it is difficult for them. The mother says Aldi is a spoilt kid. If Diane wants to forbid him eating, it will be hard.”

Stopping by today I have found reason to say welldone to the OP for sharing his Mckinsey interview
experience. Just to chip in to what I believe you already know. When an interviewer responds like
yours did while mentioning that paint was actually the reason sighted for the spike in fuel cost,
what he could also be saying is - while all you mentioned also in some form contributed to the
rising fuel cost, I wish you had mentioned the weight of the paint!! To be honest with you
Jarus, it was a delight going through your responses and I will be on the lookout for the
next one.

People, we need more contributions like this on NL to generate the level of intellectual
discourse that has been lacking on this forum for a while. Thanks once again Jarus
and best wishes with your preparations for the next stage.
spinnin: Mckinsey is one hell of a place to be at. Passing the test alone is something to be proud of. I'm just imagining what my responses would have been if I was on the receiving end of that interview. It takes critical and logical reasoning ability to answer those questions. Nice 1 op
Thanks all. But as you can see it wasn't my experience. It was that of David, one of my blog's columnists.

There is no way you can know everything by responding in one sitting to a question and anyone that expects you to know all is a fool. You can only identify common and frequent main issues in such an interview.

Don't fret or lose your cool when someone corrects you and provides you with an information in this kind of manner. Stay cool and respond like this guy.
when you gain confidence, you can even get to the extent of hijacking an interview. I recently had an interview where I was asking the interviewers whther they knew Messi. Trying to explain buy-out clause.

Fred: Ok, cool! The company spent $250m last year on fuelling and after the analysis, the COO has asked that all the airplanes be striped of paint. First tell me why planes are painted.

Me: For branding, to prevent the metal from corrosion at such high altitudes, to comply with regulations

Fred: So would you advise the company to go ahead as the COO has advised?

Me: We would need to speak with the paint manufacturers to see if some light weight paint can be produced since the company currently spends about $1m per kg of paint ($250m divided by 225kg) and maybe if the weight can be slashed by say 50% we would see significant drop in fuelling costs.

Fred: Ok, that’s the end of the case. Thank you for your time.

Walking to the elevator, the interview continues with a tricky question! “What other firms are you in contact with?” As I had come prepared for that question, I answered naming companies in similar business line and with strong brand names.

Anyway, that is the first part of my Mckinsey Story. Watch out for the second part in a forthnight.

Cheers!

Fred: So tell me what weight is added on by the paint on the plane?

Me: Do I have any figures?

Fred: No!

Me: Wow!

Me: Ok, let’s assume this room in which we are seated in 10m long and 5m wide and so let’s assume the length of the plane is 10 times that of this room that gives us 10 X 10 = 100m and since the width is constant, we still have 5m

Fred: Ok, good. Assuming the plane is cylindrical and Using 2π〖rh〗^ as surface area assume pie to be 3 what weight is added on?

Me: That should be 2 X 3 X 5 X 100 that should give 300msq

Fred: So what weight is added on?

Me: Let’s also assume that 2 sq metre would need 1 bucket of paint weighing 1kg that should be 1kg X 300sq metre divided by 2 dt shd give 150kg

Fred: Have you considered that there might be more than one coat of paint required?

Me: Ok, let me modify my assumptions to say there are 3 coats of paint required:
■· Light paint adds 0.1kg per sqm
■· Medium coat adds 0.5kg per sqm
■· Quality finish adds 1kg per sqm
■· So a total of 1.6kg per sqm

Fred: Round that up to 1.5kg and tell me what you have

Me: Ok, 1.5kg X 150 sqm = 225 kg of weight added on by the paint

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE QUESTION:

Fred: So tell me of a time you managed upwards. Where you had to convince a superior to accept your point of view and what was the process like?

…I went on to rant on and on as I had come prepared for this one

CASE:

Fred: XYZ is airline operator and is currently having problems with their costs. Could you please tell me the items that drive the cost for an airline operator?

Me: Well broadly, costs can be of two types: Variable and Fixed. For Variable we have – Fuelling Costs for Fixed, we have – maintenance, Staff overhead, licencing & regulatory fees.

Fred: One of our consultants took up research into the cost lines and discovered that fuelling expenditure was excessive. Tell me the factors that drive fuelling cost

Me: Size of engine, distance travelled, number of trips

Fred: Well, our consultant’s analysis showed that none of these factors you mentioned was actually responsible for the excessive fuelling cost. Infact, he concluded that it was the weight of the plane. So tell me the factors that affect the weight of a plane.

Me: These can be categorized into 2: Internal elements and external elements. For the internal, we have the fittings, furniture, luggage, fuel level for the external factors, we have the metal used in constructing the airplane, the engine, the tires, the blades etc

Fred: Our consultant in his analysis, found out that none of these factors you mentioned was responsible for the excessive fuelling cost. It infact was the PAINT ON THE PLANE!!!

Me: Oh, interesting

This is an interview experience that I think can be beneficial

http://www.jarushub.com/ysr-my-mckinsey-interview-i/

At some point in my life, my dream was to work at Mckinsey & Company, the world’s number one consulting firm. Fair enough, I got a chance after passing the infamous Problem Solving Test (PST).

For those who think GMAT is tough, try some PSTs. Anyway as is typical with Mckinsey, there are about 4-6 interviews comprising personal experience questions and case study interviews before clinching an offer.

I have decided to share the transcript of my first interview in the process. Hope this makes a good read for those aiming to get into the consulting field.

I was scheduled for 2 interviews – 8am and 9am and I arrived and took my seat in the neat but tiny reception on the 6th Floor Mulliner Towers Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria

I was interviewed by a guy named Fred.

Good. When I saw the headline, I came here to mention number 1 and 2, and I can see they had been mentioned in the article already. Unexplained weight loss can be a dangerous signal of cancer or liver/kidney damage. Blood in stool, especially if more than once or twice, can also be a sign of cancer of gastrointestinal tract (colon, rectum etc). See gastroenterologist shap shap. I knew this but didn't want to interfere when one of my former colleagues was on phone with someone (brother or mum herself) and was being told their mum was having blood in her stool. Overheard the discussion, and almost told them to go and do colonoscopy for her, but didn't want to interfere in their family affairs. She was later diagnosed. She didn't make it.

Ik Uche Moses

Emenike

Sports › Re: 10 Take-aways From The Nigeria-italy Match by Jarus(op):
7.Oduamadi has blown his chances: Yes, he scored the fac-saving goal against Kenya and put 3 past Tahiti. But even my grandmother will score against Tahiti. He has not been spectacular and blown the chances given to him to prove himself. I still believe we should give the Uche brothers a chance. Yes, IK Uche had a bad Nations Cup, but players do have bad tournament. It is not a new thing. IK also has good disciplinary record. Maybe Keshi should consider replacing Oduamadi with IK Uche in his World Cup Squad

8.Pirlo is a Midfield Generalissimo: Few players have ability to single-handed turn the fortune of a game. Pirlo is one of them. He came into that game and everything changed, dictating the pace of the game. It was a wonderful performance by the Juve midfielder. Thanks to our keepers for rising to the occasion. This guy has only been unfortunate to be around when Messi and CR7 came of age, and when Juve was not winning anything major. To me, Kaka did not do better than this in 2007 to win World Player of the year [when CR7 (2nd) and Messi (3rd) were just coming up].

9.We give away lead too often: Super Eagles still have the traditional problem of giving away lead. If it were Ghana, I don’t think Italy would have been able to come back from the 2-1. That is discipline. Similar thing against Uruguay, when we should have held that draw till the end, before allowing Forlan to make it 2. It happened with the frienly against Mexico last year too. Eagles have a lot to work on when leading a top opposition.

10.Will Eagles do well at World Cup? Unfortunately, I’m not good at predicting. Unfortunately too, football is one erratic game. But I think we should be able to go past the first round. To me, barring injury, this is our best squad to World Cup since 1994 set. Maybe at par with the 1998 class.

Sports › Re: 10 Take-aways From The Nigeria-italy Match by Jarus(op): 6:00pm On Nov 19, 2013
4.Our attack is good to go: Nigeria has traditionally produced more strikers than in any department in the game. I am also a striker (lol) with more than 100 goals already this year, including 4 goals haul at my debut at the City of David football turf last Friday (LOL). We have always produced fine strikers, just as Ghana traditionally produce more midfielders. I think we are spoilt with options in the front line. We can conveniently bank on Emenike, Moses, Ameobi, Musa and even Ideye for the goals.

5.Eagles concede too much: It worries me that Super Eagles hardly maintain clean sheet these days. even in matches we won, the opponents scored. It is not a good record that the only goal Tahiti has scored in a FIFA tournament, it was against us. Ethiopia scored 2 goals against us in Addis Ababa, even if only one was counted. Even minnows like Malawi and Kenya got goals against us. Not to mention the fact that Uruguay got 2 part us, Spain 3, and now Italy 2. What that means is that on a day our strikers are having a bad game (like in Confederations Cup), we will be losing because if we can’t score we are sure to concede. I don’t know whether the keepers or the defenders or even the midfielders are to blame for this, but something needs to be done.

6.Onazi is a valuable asset: Onazi is a guy to watch. He hardly has off-days. He is good both offensively and defensively. His legs are packed with ferocious shots. He may be our joker at the World Cup.

Sports › 10 Take-aways From The Nigeria-italy Match by Jarus(op): 5:59pm On Nov 19, 2013
1.Eagles do well against European/American opposition: When Eagles had a bad game against Ethiopia and Nigerians were saying, “are these the boys that would go to World Cup? Dem go chop 10 from Spain etc.”, I argued with them that Eagles historically struggle African opposition and do well against Europeans. Our football style is a little different from the typical African gba-gba-gbu football (except for the North Africans who also play possessive football). If you observed Nigeria’s best games at the last Nations cup were against Cote D’Ivoire and Mali, both of which paraded top stars that play in Europe, while we struggled against Ethiopia and Zambia with Africa-based players. Nigeria’s traditional play is possessive and attacking football. To me, even if we lost against Uruguay and Spain in the last Confederations Cup, Eagles did well, we only lacked clinical finishers in that tournament. I was therefore not surprised when with a little better strikers, we held our own against World Class Italy.

2.We don’t have a second defence line: I was listening to Brila FM analysts after the match last night and heard Babafemi Raji and Anthony Bekederemo shower encomiums on the second-string defenders we used in that match. To me, they had a poor day. In fact, with what I saw yesterday, I don’t think Azubuike Egwueke has any business in Super Eagles. Clearly, the failure of Italy from scoring more than 2 goals was not because our defenders were outstanding, but due to the wastefulness of the Italian attackers. Balotelli conveniently turned around Egwueke twice, one of them leading to goal. Two times, after Pirlo’s free-kicks were parried by Ejide/Enyeama, the Italian defenders got closer to the parried ball before our defenders – a clear sign of non-alertness or bad positioning. Our keepers tried though. To me, Ambrose, Echiejile, Oboabona and Omeruo have no back-up.

3.Mikel slows down ball too needlessly: Yes, I know that it is his style of play, to bring calmness into our side after long possession by the Italians, but the truth is, he takes decision too slowly. He needs to release the front men fast. We are not good at counter-attack and I think Mikel is responsible. Sometimes, he even gives possession away. Not to take anything away from him as our bets midfielder though.

Silly Mistakes Jobseekers Make During Application Or When Submitting Their CVs For Job Openings.

1. Sending mail without attachment: We sometimes make this mistake during our correspondences by sending mail and forgetting to attach the required documents, until the recipient of the mail call our attention to it. Unfortunately, Jobseekers don’t enjoy such luxury. No matter the number of applications you send without attaching your CV, be rest assured of not being shortlisted for interview.

2. Sending mail without content: This may look harmless but trust me, a recruiter won’t find it funny if he opens an application and the only message in the mail reads: “Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device from MTN” with the subject “my CV or my application”. This is exactly what some applicants do, yet they expect to be invited for interview.

3. Sending mail without cover letter: Most job seekers send out applications without cover letter. I personally don’t give too much weight to cover letters (especially if it is online application) because I hardly read them, and many HR professionals don’t either. You are however sending signal of an unserious job applicant if I open your mail and there is no form of introduction at least about yourself and what you are applying for (even if I did not read the content). I must quickly say most of us don’t read the cover letters because we want to access as many CV as possible and the time spent reading one cover letter is enough to read another CV. God help you if I have limited CVs and I am interested in reading your cover letter and you have none or you send hard copy of your CV without cover letter.

4. Group application: I have received applications from multiple candidates through a single source at once and I have also received applications that have been forwarded to many other companies before I received them and I kept asking myself if those applicants really wanted the job or they were just testing their skills on the usage of the internet. Yet they wanted me to invite them (as unserious as they were) for interview.

5. Not following instructions: Due to the volume of applications we receive, HR professionals device means of separating each of the advertised positions. In doing this, we either formulate code for each job or give each of the job a particular ‘subject of the mail’. But funny enough most jobseekers just ignore these instructions and follow their own regular way of applying for jobs. Little did they know that the complex application instructions are sometimes used to test their willingness to follow instruction and attend to details if employed.

6. Sending scanned CVs: Sometimes I find it hard to understand why applicants go the extra mile of scanning their CVs before attaching and sending it when no instruction told them to do so. And in most cases those scanned CVs were never well scanned; what I still do not understand is whether they were actually scanned or snapped with phones, and of course sent to a friend to help them apply for a job they know next to nothing about.

7. Inaccessible CVs: I sometimes wonder why, despite all the software on my system, I still cannot open some CV’s. I have not met any hiring manager who will go out of his way just to open a CV to enable him invite the candidate for interview. Simple MS word is enough, except otherwise instructed. I wonder where the complication is coming from.

8. Being Too eager for the job: There is no crime in contacting the hiring manager if you have his contact, but when your calls begin to distract/disturb him, he begins to have a rethink about you, if hiring you will not be a problem to the company. Except you have a personal relationship with him and that should not be abused either.

9. Not applying early: This is an aspect many jobseekers take for granted. By practice all advert should have at least a week window for application, but in reality, the CV’s of the first set of people who applied for the job are considered, except where the job attracts limited applications or CV’s sorted electronically. We can imagine how many cases of the exceptions abound.
