NaijaNaWaa:
RIBADU
2, Patriotism--15% (Tribalist/Islamic extremist)
This is strange to me, and the first time I'm hearing this allegation against Ribadu.

Or to you, is every Muslim/Northerner a tribalist/Islamic extremist?
Or will you prove this?
Politics › Re: Sanusi, El-rufai And Ribadu Compared! by Jarus(op): 5:10pm On Jan 18, 2012
I will also prefer a Buhari to any of them, for maturity and experience.
Politics › Re: Femi Fani Kayode Replies Sls by Jarus(m): 4:52pm On Jan 18, 2012
I also agree SLS would have done better not mentioning FFK's name in that write-up.
Politics › Re: Femi Fani Kayode Replies Sls by Jarus(m): 4:44pm On Jan 18, 2012
I can't. But I know the CBN boss reports to Finance Minister. Real? Yes. Ideal. Maybe not.
And you know a former minister(FFK) cannot make that mistake(of not knowing that CBN boss reports to FM).
I am also very much aware of that.
Politics › Re: Femi Fani Kayode Replies Sls by Jarus(m): 4:10pm On Jan 18, 2012
Finance minister is the supervisory minister for CBN, so CBN governor reports to Finance Minister, but by the by the nature of CBN governorship job, the governor usually wields so much influence that only the President has control over him. But constitutionally, CBN boss reports to Finance Minister.
Politics › Re: Femi Fani Kayode Replies Sls by Jarus(m): 3:08pm On Jan 18, 2012
If Sanusi was not currently CBN governor and still a public commentator that he was years ago, I am just imagining how he would have replied FFK. The guy is a veteran of many wars-of-articles

I have read his punches to the following people in the past and I know this is his turf:

1, Mohammed Haruna
2, Late Sheikh Jaafar(popular Islamic cleric in Kano, whom he called 'Islamic demagogue)
3, Simon Kolawole
4, Prof Peter Ekeh
5, Reuben Abati
6, Edwin Madunagu
7, Okey Ndibe
8, Ike Okonta
9, Afenifere
10, D.S Yola

My problem with him is sometimes he goes overboard.
Politics › Re: Sanusi, El-rufai And Ribadu Compared! by Jarus(op): 2:32pm On Jan 18, 2012
el rufai's constant demolition of houses of percieved political enemies
I disagree. He demolished the house of Ahmadu Ali, then PDP National Chair and Obasanjo's ally, too.
Politics › Re: Sanusi, El-rufai And Ribadu Compared! by Jarus(op): 2:30pm On Jan 18, 2012
Now, let me set the ball rolling with my own perception:

I will rank them based on these criterias and brief comments on the ranking

1, Integrity: Sanusi>Ribadu>el-Rufai: I find disturbing the revelation that some lands were allocated by el-Rufai to relatives

2, Patriotism: Ribadu>Sanusi>el-Rufai: Ribadu is very passionate about this country, and for singularly stopping Obj from installing Peter Odili, I see him as most patriotic;

3, Nationalism: Ribadu>el-Rufai>Sanusi: Sanusi identifies too much with his Fulani background, though not bad, but earns him my least mark.

4, Intellectual depth: Sanusi>el-Rufai>Ribadu: el-Rufai had a First in Qty Surveying from ABU, but hey, Sanusi, to me, is too deep to ignore. The guy is wide read and easily earns my top shot here.

5, Courage: Sanusi>Ribadu>el-Rufai: Tight one here. Sanusi fought banking cabals, Ribadu fought political cabals and el-Rufai bulldozed Abuja to masterplan, but I will give it to Sanusi because unlike a strongman Obj that supported the latter duo, SLS did not have a too strong presidential backing

6, Consistency Sanusi>Ribadu>el-Rufai: I have issue with Ribadu's association with Tinubu after calling him a thief of international dimension(or word to that effect); I'm not too comfortable with el-Rufai's changing statements too. SLS gets the prize here, for me. He walks his talk.
Politics › Sanusi, El-rufai And Ribadu Compared! by Jarus(op): 2:14pm On Jan 18, 2012
Guys, I know this is the least of Nigeria's problems at the moment; but hey, let's lay it bare here.

The 3 guys are the face of the 'New North'. They have many things in common: all of them within same age-grade(50-51); all of them Fulani(or is El-Rufai Hausa?); all of them attended ABU Zaria; each of them the most controversial public officer in their times; three of them lanky etc

But interestingly, they mean different things to different people. Some people will lay their lives for Sanusi, some for el-Rufai, and some for Ribadu.

It was this that interests me to seek your opinion on your perceptions of these guys with respect to the following criterias:

1, Integrity
2, Patriotism
3, Nationalism
4, Intellectual depth
5, Courage
6, Consistency

I read Les Leba's arguments in Punch the Friday it was published; I read it over and over again and found it very plausible. I remember sending an sms to a CBN topshot after the article couple of weeks ago, asking: what do you see about Les Leba's proposition?

I also watched the Channels' interview with him and I realized Deji did not appear to be on the same page with him.

I agree with him on his suggestions, especially as it is multi-faceted: tackling inflation, a better way to deregulate, etc

But like any economic policy, it is not a silver bullet, it will have its shortcomings, though I've not been able to pinpoint one.

Jarus, so you are married! I never knew or guessed that O. You are a young husband, hahaha. Well, that is still a very long thing for me sha.

To echo @Ajanlekoko and @chamber2, you indeed can get a fully funded PhD position in the US; it is also possible to take your wife along with you. I know a guy who did exactly this in 2010. He got a fully funded PhD position in the US and simply went with his iyale or iyawo. In your case, the worst that will happen is that you people will manage or live below your current standard of living. But, hey, that is a price to be paid for you to achieve your dreams.

In addition to your strong BSc degree, try to sit and ace the GRE and TOEFL. For someone like you, a score of at least 110/120 on the TOEFL and a score within the 90-99th percentile on the Quantitative section of the GRE should not be impossible. With these scores, I bet that you will get a fully funded PhD position at a top 40 in the US. You would notice that I did not mention anything about the Verbal section of the GRE; it is because Economics departments don't really care about Verbal scores. They just want to be sure that students can think quantitatively and analytically. A good TOEFL score will always make up for a bad Verbal GRE score. By the way, your analytical writing scores shouldn't be bad too.

A guy that graduated with me in Naija took the TOEFL in 2008 and scored 116/120. He is now in Michigan. He did not even do a Master's in Naija before he left. The TOEFL test is really a joke in my opinion. Another guy that graduated just a year after me in Naija got admitted into Harvard. He also did not have to complete MSc in Nigeria. He got admitted with his BSc and TOEFL and GRE.

Stand up, man. Iyawo is not an excuse O, brother.

T22.
My eyes missed this yesterday, despite reading subsequent comments.
I will explore this. Don't mind me, when you see small change, you gradually forget all these things. I was so serious with it in 2007 shortly after I finished school, but the enthusiasm has been waning every year.

Gotta dust my books and explore these, and this year!!! No waiting again!
Thanks

I noticed that all the articles I wrote pre-2008(before I became active on NL) were less vituperative(euphemism for being abusive) than the ones I wrote 2008 till date. NL taught me how to abuse, directly or indirectly. And this is real.

Reno Omokri, SA on New Media(FB et al) is the most useless appointment. At best an officer(say fresh grad) in the office of SA on media and publicity should be given that job, amongst other works.

As a die-hard fan of African football, I will watch as many matches as possible, especially those involving Ghana, CIV and Senegal.

The 3 of them are the favourites. If CIV dont win this, this generation cannot win it again. I root for CIV or Senegal though; I don't like Ghana, they disrespect Nigeria too much.

STARS TO WATCH
Mousa Sow - Senegal/Lille - Highest Goal scorer in French Ligue 1 last season with 25 goals
Demba Ba - Senegal/Newcastle - you EPL buffs all know him
Dede Ayew - Marseille/Ghana - Marseille player of the season, last season
Kelvin Prince Boateng - Ghana/Milan - you know him too
Seydou Doumba - CSKA/CIV - CIV's hottest prodigy

Plus the known faces like Gervinho, Toure brothers, Chamakh and almost spent forces like Drogba etc

This ANC will be interesting!

T22, when I read Obama's books, which he wrote many years before even becoming a Senator, I was equally held spellbound at that level of reasoning; it was as if he wrote the books a day to being sworn in as American President! He surely knew what he wanted and consciously planned and worked for it.

On the current subject, I had my first degree in Economics but I am today first an Accountant before Economist. In actual sense, not an Economist, because you need a second degree, if not Phd, to be one.

I have done Accounting(and a little investment banking) all my career but I have not lost sight of going back to Economics. I had an offer from Durham for Msc Economics & Finance in 2007 but deferred it and later forgot about it. Finally settled for Unilag for Msc Economics last year but later turned down the admission. Marriage has made this Msc stuff(especially going abroad) tight for me in recent time but I still have it in mind. I need to equip myself with a second degree in Economics(preferably specializing in Development or Financial Economics), then make a foray into the world of Economics.

As an aside, I made a casual attempt to make good my goal of entering an institution which day to day business is Economic analysis(Ajanlekoko should remember I have been saying this since 2009) by contacting current CBN governor(who is now a personal friend) on my goal few weeks ago but he was silent, and I guess, he, in his very principled self, sees that as opportunistic, even though I don't see it as such since I will go through the normal recruitment process. I also just ignored that side in subsequent contacts. I still have a dream to work in CBN, DMO or any other relevant agency if the pay is right.

My First degree is in Medicine and Surgery. Health economics is actually a very interesting field, and Its an emerging field too. Health economist do a lot of things ranging from Healthcare financing (health insurance is the most popular), to Economic evaluation of health technologies and health programs, Equity in healthcare, and every other things that help increase value for money spent on healthcare. With increasing population and increasedemand for health and healthcare, coupled with limited resources, its no longer business as usual. i hope to be able to share more details as time goes on.
The field will be interesting and defiinitely a hot cake, if not now, in the medium term.
I read, few weeks ago, about the young lady behind 'Flying Doctors' and she is dooing herself good and making name and money for herself. she specializes in an unexploited area of healthcare like this. Going into Healthcare Economics appears similarly promising.

But I strongly doubt, if not totally sure, any Nigerian university does it though.

Oga, he is a key member of the National Economic Management Team and arguably the most respected and vocal member of the team, so govt capitalizing on those to use him as their 'poster boy' in this issue is not out of place. But more importantly, fuel subsidy is an economic decision, so there is no way CBN governor can be out of it.
