Nairaland General › Re: Is Nairaland Worth 10 Million Naira? by Jarus(m): 4:51pm On Jan 05, 2012
How much is 10m that a forum as big and popular as Nairaland will be sold at that price?
Seun has repeatedly said his price for NL is N25b.
Not sure about that amount, but defintely Nairaland is not worth less than 200m.

Topic moved to General/Nairaland section.

Just seeing this.

I can only shake my head. Coming from a 3000plus poster as Hollandis is shameful, but more pitiable is Mikeansy's intervention.

Am I the '8 people that' nominated Sanusi or the '5 people' that nominated Tinubu?

@ omo-tier
Thanks for your comments, even if not totally correct.
Nairaland is also pro-Nigeria, pro-Africa. Nairaland as an entity doesn't take sides, even if we officials have our personal opinions which we freely express in the course of discussions, and which a reasonable grown-up should know are not official position of NL.

That said, in addition to the 'hotness' of a topic, giving both sides to a debate opportunity to express their views is the hallmark of a sane discussion forum. That is why, our homepage rules also include, in addition to captivativeness of the topic, making all sides heard. Hence, an anti-subsidy(pro-GEJ or whatever you call it) thread that is reasonable, no matter the no of pre-front page replies will also be considered for hp. The goal of hp exposure, after all, is to allow wider participation.

And I don't think my response are rash. Threads like this are opened from time to time and we keep explaining same thing.
If we are to behonest with ourselves, Seun, aka superMOD and the other MODs should admit there is a level of baise in the way some 'post' are elevated to front page status.

This will be expected as the SuperMOD and other 'minor' MODs huh (duno super, minor, God help humanity!) are humans and there is bound to be an element of baise in the kind of work they do. But here again, I have also noticed that during the periods GEJ appears to be having a rough time, any pro-GEJ post featuring what the GEJ says He will do is quickly flashed on the front page!Let me not assume anything but going by the events of the last General Elections, SEUN we know PDP, JARUS is CPC and OMA4J, dunno, He could belong to one of those parties proscribed by JEGA'S INEC huh, so I guess that brings a fair balance but again, in Nigeria is there anything like fair anymore?

If I may add, JARUS, your response to this post I feel was, 'duno'. OMA4J's response did give some clarity to others who weren't aware of how forumes like NL function with posts.
You cannot say because the popular sentiments is against GEJ, then the few pro-GEJ threads should not have their own fair share of homepage too. All sides must be heard, the pro-subsidy, the anti-subsidy. We are an unbiased empire(even if we have our personal opinions). Maybe you guys expect Nairaland to fully endorse a side. No, we wont do that. Any topic from any side that we feel is captivating enough for the front page will make it. You pro-subsidy, anti-GEJ people are accusing govt of suppressing you yet you are also clamouring for suppression of some views here. Yes, denying the anti-subsidy, pro-GEJ their say is also suppression.

Let everybody talk, intelligence will reign.

Politics › Re: Seun Is Among The Problems Of Nigeria by Jarus(m): 10:47pm On Jan 03, 2012
The level of reasoning of many folks on NL baffles me.
Who do we believe?
Pro-GEJ people: 'Nairaland is a Buharii site. They even manipulated polls to deceive Nigerians that Buhari was winning. They keep banning beaf because they cannot stand truth Even the mods, Aisha2 and Jarus, are part of Buhari machinery'

Anti-GEJ people: 'Seun and Nairaland are govt machinery. They keep deleting posts that are anti-GEJ. You cannot suppress truth bla bla'

When someone lacks creativity to spice up a topic to attract comments and stay afloat and the thread runs to page 5, we mods are to blame.

With the no of anti-GEJ threads that are on front page, for anyone to think NL is suppressing 'truth' against GEJ is height of daftness.

For God's sake, how many times do people need telling that the wave of discussions of NL is purely a reflection of reigning public sentiments, and not guided by any moderator or Seun?

Proud to be the moderator of the largest section in the largest online forum in Africa.

The moderator of Politics section of Nairaland is bigger than the administrators of other Nigerian forums put together.

Mere mention of my position as moderator of Nairaland Politics has opened doors for me in real world.

Who else can boast of this(save for my partner, of course)? Lol

Materiality should be the guide. Determine the materiality based on th company's size(turnover, industry, activity level, opex etx). For a 1 billlion dollar company, I will not capitalize any expenses less than 500k or at worst 200k. But the company should have a documented capitalization policy and consistent with it.
Career › Re: Accountants' Forum. by Jarus(m): 11:21pm On Jan 01, 2012
Transport expenses and other indirect costs should be expensed to P&L.
For training costs, it's debatable, but sounder argument to me is that it should also be expensed. Training costs are generally expensed. Consultancy(e.g if you needed to bring in experts) should also be expensed.

My company had a similar exercise few years ago and that was how treated the costs. Software costs running into more than half a billion were capitalized and amortized over 5 years, while far-off expenses like training and consultancy were expensed.

@denzel,
Thanks. I didn't know, not ever had cause to use them anywhere. Thanks

jerryben12:
For software acquisition and implementation, is there a clear line from GAAP on what should be capitalized or expensed? Also, how will you determine the annual depreciation percentage year over year till you completely write off the capital portion of the implementation?
Software acquisition and implementation costs are to be treated as Tangibles. They are to be warehoused into an a/c, possibly work-in-progress, and upon completion of the project, amortised over 5 years(i.e 20 percent per annum). i think the SAS on Tangibles, R and D cover it.

The cork is obviously the 50-ID monster trying to sway the elections, but all the sections he was able to influence were cancelled.

As for the mod, I should have mentioned ' a mod was suspected' not 'caught in the act'. Investigations are still ongoing, so it will be unfair to assassinate the mod's character by naming him. But definitely all the names being mentioed here are far from it.
Politics › Re: Its Obvious Some Nairalanders Are Amongst Election Riggers In Nigeria by Jarus(m): 9:03pm On Dec 30, 2011
It was serious. Even a NL official(name withheld) was caught in the act. A lot went on in the last few hours of the elections, but the Supermod was vigilant enough to catch them and declare the affected sections cancelled. Imagine someone creating 50 IDs. I was alarmed when I heard about what happened at the closing hours of the polls.

Too bad this can happen in an inconsequential online elections.

I used to think I know Nigeria's political history until I met you here. You are about the only poster in this part of NL that I do some searching to be sure of my facts before I engage.
Christianity Etc › Re: Christmas Bombings: God Is Powerless! by Jarus(m): 7:32pm On Dec 30, 2011
I am personally convinced that God exists and He interferes in man's affairs, helps and protects.

But I have problem with a lot of religionists that refuse to face the reality that as much as possible, we must, through humanly possible and legitimate means protect and help ourselves, while having at the deep back of our hearts that God is the ultimate Protector.

Tell some people to take some precautions and you will hear 'it's not my portion'

Rather than believe that God doesn't exist, my own take-home from events like this is, true salvation is from the fundamentals of a religion and its reasonability, not some miracle-thumping as evidence of salvation.
