When Mikel came into limelight in 2005, I was one of the people that thought, a new Zidane had come, that at last, Nigeria has produced a player that will soon be in contention for World player of the year. The world became Mikel's oyster. He became the beautiful bride wanting to be courted by every big Club. But the hype was not out of place, given Mikel's performance in WYC 2005. At home here in Naija, there was a fierce debate on who was better between JJ and Mikel. Many people sid a new JJ had arrived. Segun Odegbami wrote he was more like Oliseh than JJ. Some people contended he JJ,Oliseh and kanu rolled into one. In international media and online forums, the name Mikel continued to recur, for enviable reason. You feel proud being a Nigerian in those foreign forums. In a discussion thread in an American forum, Bigsoccer, in 2005, many posters listed Mikel in their list of TOP 5 PLAYERS IN THE WORLD IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS. He was highly rated the world over. Some compared him with Zidane. Some said he played like Riquelme at his peak in Villareal and Argentine national team. BBC sports analysts reported a new Superstar from Africa had arrived to succeed Eto'o, Essien and Drogba. I had not discovered NL then, so Bigsoccer was my favourite online forum. In that American forum, the very few people that cautioned the Mikel trumpeters that 'Let's wait and see what this boy will play first before all these accolades' were regarded as haters and pessimists. But when Mikel was not able to replicate his Holland performance in his first season in Chelsea, I was still one of those that had confidence in mikel's ability. We all poured blame on Mourinho for converting him to a DM. Now, I have come to believe that Mikel is overrated. I'm not saying that he's not good, but far less than what people say of him. I don't think he can replicate that WYC performance again. What surprises me most is that this guy still gets good rating the world over. Or am I watching a different Mikel? Imagine goal.com listing him among africa's Top 10 in 2008, leaving out a better performers like Yaya Toure, Seidu Keita etc. Trust the ever jealous Ghanaweb forumers. One of out every 5 threads in that forum is on Mikel. Nobody even cares here. |
Much as I tried to be neutral while the Obama phenomenon raged, I also almost cried when I heard his speech. I was moved by his speech. |
I didnt even know the section didn't have a moderator all this while. I rarely care about who moderates a section. . . . |
nuzo:We are talking about city, not state. UN statistical sources put Lagos as 15th most populous city in the world, and with a growth rate of 5.8% per annum, it was projected to rise to 3rd most populous city in the world by 2015. By 2006 it was already ranked 8th. However, with the outcome of 2006 census, all the statistical research agencies have reviewed their records, and from my latest research, Lagos is now ranked 14th most populous city in the world, as I type. Kano? I can't see Kano on the list. Reason: I don't know. earTHMama:Haba, koto yen. Don't take it too far, Funmi. |
Just bumped on this as I read through the dailies of today. Barkindo replaces Yar’adua as NNPC GMD Written by By Sunday Williams Wednesday, 14 January 2009 The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Alhaji Abubakar Yar’adua was yesterday sacked by President Umaru Yar’adua and replaced with NNPC’s Group Executive Director (Special Project), Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Rilwan Lukman, announced the Federal Government’s approval of Barkindo’s appointment via a statement in Abuja. The statement issued by Dr. Levi Ajuonuma, Group General Manager of NNPC’s Public Affairs Division, said Barkindo’s appointment took effect from Monday, January 12. Barkindo’s predecessor has proceeded on his pre-retirement leave. Until his appointment, Barkindo, whose career in NNPC spanned more than 23 years, was Coordinator of Special Duties, overseeing the implementation of the corporation’s major projects. He had been the Acting Secretary-General of OPEC in 2006 and the Deputy Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas. Barkindo, who had been General Manager, and Head, International Trade, of the London Office of NNPC, was a Special Assistant to the Minister of Petroleum and Energy. He has also served on the board of several NNPC companies, banks, oil service companies and international trading companies. The new GMD served for 15 years on the OPEC Economic Commission Board as Nigeria’s Representative, and chaired the Board in 2006 as Acting Secretary-General of OPEC. The statement also conveyed the appointment of Prof. Yinka Omoregbe as Company Secretary/Legal Adviser of NNPC. Until her new appointment, Omoregbe was Dean, Faculty of Law of the University of Ibadan. Omoregbe replaces Chief Sena Anthony. The former NNPC GMD, Yar’adua was appointed in acting capacity in August 2007 following the removal of his predecessor, Engineer Funso Kupolokun. |
Redding, who until recently was director of faith formation at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, has been a priest for more than 20 years. Now she's ready to tell people that, for the last 15 months, she's also been a Muslim — drawn to the faith after an introduction to Islamic prayers left her profoundly moved. She has been a priest in a cathedral for 20 years. 15 months ago, she was profoundly moved by Islam after an introduction to Islamic prayers. Now she is already calling herself a Muslim, openly. She 's still in a transition state. She will eventually drop Christianity for her new-found religion. This is discernible from the story. |

Had to dig out this old thread because I wanted to discuss Eto'o and did not want to start a new thread. This guy would have won APOY award six consecutive times. In 2006, Eto'o was at his peak before injury knocked him out of the game, losing the award to Drogba. In 2007, even with injury he returned 11 league goals for Barca, equalling what fully-fit-all-season Yak, Nigeria's highest scorer, returned in a whole season. In 2007/2008 season, even with injury he still scored 16 league goals. He lost the 2007 award to Kanoute. The guy just returned from injury and has taken his place back in the top spot of La Liga scorers chart, with 16 goals, shaming those who used to say 'no Ronnie, no Eto'o". I believe without injury, this guy would still be winning APOY award till now. He is not in contention for 2008 CAF APOY, obviously due to the fact that the nomination was made around November when the season just started, but despite that he came 7th in WPOY result that just came out yesternight, with Adebayor, the likely winner of the African award, coming 17th. But again, Eto'o is likely to win the 2009 APOY award if he continues with this form, for the 4th time. |
Wa alaikum, I have always known you still have some 'sympathy' for Islam, as I can see from your posts I went through that you focused more on tackling these Christian beliefs as you engage davidylan, Olaadegbu and others in Religion section. You mentioned somewhere that the Koranic account of creation is saner than the biblical account. The issue with you, I think, is not believing in the existence of God. Why not simply open your heart and do more research. Regards |
OK, WHO DELETED THE PREVIOUS RESPONSES TO THIS THREAD? WHATS GOING ON AND WHAT KIND OF NONSENSE IS THAT?What's the fuss about? I meant to start the thread in Islam for Muslims section but mistakenly did so in Religion section. I moved it here and asked that the one in Religion section be deleted. And that was done. Afterall, it is qualified for both sections but I prefer it here. The mods displayed responsiveness, rather than favouritism as you were already accusing them of. tpia, get a life!!! |
Nigeria is now 8th most populous country in the world. We were 10th about 5 years ago. Lagos was then the 15th most populous city in the world. |

Olaolufred:Remember even in 2006, we had teh same point with the eventual qualifier and even more goals, only lost to one archaic rule. folabola:It is Tunisia's birthright too. They also easily qualify for WC and appeared in the last 3 editions. So rule out Tunisia at your peril. |
Haba, JJ, this is too embarrassing!!! Even if you he suspected him, he should not have searched him. Even if the phone was worth N500,00, I think JJ would have done better stomaching his suspicion rather than embarrassing somebody he personally invited to his house for a party, in the presence of his wife for that matter. Too bad. But I'm not too surprised, I once read how JJ kicked a poor woman that was begging him for money in Ikeja a couple of years ago. 'Ijebu' billionaire |
Too predictable! |
Dear Bindex, I first read your post in the thread where you were asking 'why is it that evil spirits attack only those who believe in them?'. In that thread I read your post thus: I visited my moslem relatives on the other end (I still lie to them that I am a muslim to gain acceptance) and experienced the same thing, there was a girl who is a relative of a wife of my cousin, she was attacked by Aljanu (evil spirits ), and was brought to a mallam who lives in my cousins vicinity, we took the girl there and the mallam began to pray for her using the Koran, once he started praying for her she began to scream, cry and roll on the floor, she begged them to stop reading the Koran and promised to leave the young lady alone and never to return, they asked the so called Aljani what his name was, his age, where he came from and the reason he got hold of the young girl, the girl said somethings and continued to shout and scream when ever the mallam read the verses from the Koran, the young girl kept saying things that were not very clear and of no particular meaning, she was speaking in tongues the way christains do, in short it was really a DRAMICTIC scene, having been brought up as a muslim i had witnessed such events about twice or trice when i was a kid but it was really strange and eerie since i no longer believe in islam and had never witnessed such a thing for a very long time.I took special interest in you and followed your posts on Nairaland. I opened your profile and viewed your past posts. I can see that more than 80% of your posts are on religion, where you are seriously giving Christians and Muslims a challenge to their beliefs. I'm particularly surprised this can come from a Hausa, from kano for that matter. But I quickly remember the case of Prophet Noah's son, born into a Prophet's family. Allah surely guides whom He wills. I read how you were born a Muslim, converted to Christianity by Mum at 14, before gradually dropping Christianity from 50% to 70% to 90% and now a full-fledged atheist. Bindex, I'm not here to engage you in a debate; I'm not too good in debating. I'm also quite emotional a human being and easily drop tears, especially when I'm trying to pass a message of truth and the person continues to wallow in denial. This is why I respect Olabowale, for his long debates with Christians here. I fought back tears when I read your story. That was how pathetic I felt. I'm not trying to use emotions to invite you back to Islam. I know you are too strong-minded for that. I know you are too civilized for that. Like I have said debating has not been my strong point, but Bindex, let me attempt a simple poser to you: You said you witnessed where Qur'anic verses were recited on somebody and the jinn (speaking through the mouth of the person) was begging that the Qura'nic recitation be stopped, that it would leave the person possessed. This happened in your presence. Does science have an explanation for this? Could those words(verses) be ordinary? I believe that incident happening in your presence is a mercy from God, perhaps you may, from there, reason, reflect and make further research about this Qur'an and get to know the truth. I'm aware you were converted to Christianity by your mother and when you were about dropping Christianity, you were comparing Christianity with atheism. If you had been a Muslim at the time your atheistic instincts were developing, you will naturally be comparing Islam and atheism, and I'm sure you would have done more research on Islam and chances are that you find conviction in Islam. This is why it is very rare to see a person converting from directly Islam to atheism. The Tai Solarin,Fela etc, like you, left Christianity for atheism. Karl Marx was a son a a Jewish monk before becoming an atheist. I'm not saying you can never find a person converting from Islam to atheism, but history has it that it is very rare. It is naturally built in a Muslim, even with the slightest faith, that there is God. What is common is for some Muslims to ignorantly call another thing God, like converting to Christianity and calling Jesus God. But you will rarely find a Muslim, that had a slightest fiath before, to just come out one day and say there is no God again. Like you, many of them went through the Christianity route. Bindex, why not do a futher research on this religion Islam. You may not necessarily look at we Muslims, look at the message of Islam. I was also in similar state of confusion around 2000-2001 when I began to question my Islam, that was I not a Muslim just because my parents were? I did research and became convinced about this Islam, and saw it as God's mercy. After all many other people were favoured by God to be born into a Muslim family but squandered the mercy. My absolute conviction about this religion of Islam however came around the years 2002-2004 when a close family member was attacked by Jinn and I was forced to research into that topic. I found many amazing things that absolutely convinced me about the authenticity of this Islam. And like you, I saw the power of Qur'anic verses, live. No, this Qur'an could not have been concocted by man! Bindex, I was about saying ''if you accept Islam and die a Muslim and on the day of resurrection, you regret dying a Muslim'', please do anything to me, when I remember you don't believe in resurrection. I swear by God almighty that this Islam is true(oh I've forgotten again that you don't believe in God) What else will I say? But bindex, who knows, a deeper research into this religion Islam, may make you see the truth. Regards |

I like my new username JARUS. Much as I always disagree with her, especially for her e-war on my religion, I think Funmi is somehow creative in forming usernames. All the usernames I know her with are very creative and usually unique: REDHOTCHIC, EARTHMAMA,PEPPERSPRAY,DEEPZONE. . . I wonder where she gets those names. I also admire the following usernames: Maisuya MrCrackles Spikedcylinder I don't like usernames that easily suggest the user's real name. |
I don't who's giving the award being quoted here. CAF and BBC are the most recognised and neither of them has announced their APotY winner. By the way i see Adebayor winning CAF. BBC? Adebayor is the current holder and may also retain that. |
Wow. . .how did u know our set was 40%/60%? Were you also 2001 set I was 60%(2000 UME). |

I have been able to read from one or two threads that the three of us finished from Ife Economics and we are all among the most active Nairalanders. I have started this thread for us. Can we discuss our experience in the department. To set the ball rolling, I was in the department 2001-2006. Expy was my course adviser throughout. I used to enjoy Expy's funny comments and actions. How about Fabroo? My best lecturer was Prof Oladeji. Mr Adejumo is also a good lecturer among the junior lecturers. More to come. Other Ife Eco grads or students are also invited. If you did a course in our department, you are also not ledft out. |
