So I dropped my notice of resignation on 11th September, 2017 and all hell seemed to break loose in a sense. Immediately Personnel passed my notice to my direct boss (who is the Managing Partner and son of the overall boss), he called me to his office for a meeting.

He asked me why I was leaving and all. I told him my reasons (none of which included pay, because, unknown to me, he had called my best friend, who also works in the same firm but has now moved to Canada for masters, to find out why I was leaving and that one was talking one nonsense that it was pay) and stated that nothing could change my mind, as I had carefully planned my exit for about a year, so there was no going back.

So why did I leave?

1. No clear career progression: the business is set up to perpetuate the overall boss and his kids. It does not have a plan to raise successful and distinguished non-family members.

2. There is no motivation for performance. Pay is poor and comes with the attitude that they're doing you a favour. There are no incentives. To add to it, they started cutting the already meagre bonuses. In 2 years I only got a 20k raise, despite being one of the star associates in the firm, quote and unquote.

3. The attitude, words and action of the overall boss to his subordinates is one I cannot stomach for too long. It is confidence draining and not good for the pysche. I believe a man's true character is revelaed in how he treats people of lesser status/standing.

I had wanted to quit about a year ago, but I didn't like how just a year would look on my cv, so I reckoned that two years was a decent time and decided to tough it out. Plus, I was working on a major case that I needed to see to conclusion, lest I be perceived as sabotaging the business. Concluded that in June, then I hit the streets.

Getting a new job was almost so easy ( though I was scared at some point). Over the past two years, I have gained like five-years worth of experience, so it was easy to get the attention of serious law firms. Job hunting did come with its own drama. A firm called me to come pick up my offer letter, after acing the interview; only for them to go cold on me. Till today, I heard nothing from them. Looking back, I'm thankful they didn't get back to me, because some big guys in the profession came knocking and I was all too glad to accept. Tomorrow, 16th, I resume with another Tier 1 Law Firm.

Lessons learnt;
1. At every point on the job, keep creating and adding value. That's what would stand you in good stead in the market.

2. Always have an exit plan else you become stuck.

3. Your confidence is your greatest asset as a professional. Guard it jealously. Most people will rely more on the confidence with which you put your points across than the merits of the points themselves (I might be wrong on this).

4. Keep the big picture in mind. Don't be carried away by the occasional peanuts designed to keep you stuck on the job. I had to drop my beloved offical car. No harm in short term discomfort for long term gain.

I left when the ovation was loudest. The admission of my bosses is that I'm a sound and hardworking lawyer, whom they would have loved to keep on. The boss prayed for me in conc. Yoruba language, you know those "ijinle" prayers right?

Were the two years worth it? Definitely yes!, in terms of experience and getting a peep into my potentials as a professional.

Would I want to do it again? Not sure o.

Congratulations San! smiley

So, madam just comes in from travel and says:
"Ah Jaz you didn't take charge while I was away o!"

I feel my head knack like "gbagaun!"

According to madam, I'm suppose to take charge when she is not available. But guys, I am new - and these guys I'm to "take charge" over are young peeps. I've been trying not to just up from the moon and come to lord it over them. But when madam comes and that is the first statement she utters, I Feel Bad. Very bad. Very Very Bad.

There were small small issues in the office while she was away which got escalated to overall madam being informed. Now my direct madam is saying, how come they jumped me and escalated to overall madam. And I am thinking in my head like: "is that how it is?"

Anyways, lessons learnt.

Let's hope my leadership potential can still be salvaged embarassed

Coping with team spirit in a situation just like yours requires a lot of patience and you telling yourself to be calm while the others get their act together.

You can find out why others are not ready with theirs and assist if you can. Get yours ready so when "yawa gaz", you turn in yours if necessary.

Thanks dear. Why they are not ready - they feel its 'just a report' no need to stress it so any attempt to assist that mentality would be seen as the same 'stuck-up' mentality I'm trying to avoid.

So I'm at the office and I've " gba calm" de watch. We devised excuse to give madam. Lol only for madam to be calling us one by one to ask for the report grin

We all stuck to the story and fortunately madam wasn't upset. She actually gave us the rest of the week to ensure all reports are submitted.

Lol not so at all. The guys called yesterday, truth is they all heard the deadline. They just wanted to support the babe.

Before you submit, they should be well aware that you are submitting and from your comment, it shows you are going to submit whether there is a deadline or not.

Hello Jazmiynne,

I'm a big fan, so grab a bottle.....try and understand my point(s).

Yayyyyyyy I have a fan oooo #seeMeFeelingLikeAceleb cheesy

Fact No 1, Mr Eazi had his Internship at SLB.

Fact No 2, SLB don't pay interns in $.....and they certainly do not pay undergraduate interns anything above N100,000.

Fact No 3 (I don't know if this is a fact) but according to Mr Eazi Wikipedia page, he worked at SLB "after" graduation in 2014 <------ this was the basis of my conversion of $6,000 because SLB sure pays graduate engineers around that figure.

Based on the LinkedIn picture you posted, his employment with SLB was an undergraduate internship. However, he showed us SLB green hat pix (which is for junior level engineers and fits the internship concept), telling us how he left 6000$ job at Slb.
Honestly ehn, even if Mr Eazi was working as greenhorn grad engineer after his graduation with that his green hard hat, that 6000$ ish na lie cheesy

Before graduation o, IT o, after graduation o, even Mr Eazi knows he was lying. Lol
I just don't understand sha why he chose to just ridicule himself in public space ontop something that can be so easily spotted

Is this a 19 year Old Mr Eazi?

A 26 year old Mr Eazi had his 6 months undergraduate Internship at Schlumberger in 2010.

If my math is right, that means he did his internship when he was 19 years.

The big Question: Is the below picture that of a 19 year old?
If not, circulating news may just be wrong and unnecessary.

According to Mr Eazi Wikipedia page, he worked at Schlumberger after graduation in 2014.

$6,000 in 2014 was never N2million.

cc @Lalasticlala

Lolz lwkmd! grin
If anything, this post actually confirms that Mr Eazi indeed lied. This is 2017 and I can authoritatively confirm for you that even in this 2017, SLB pays absolutely no intern $6000 per month e come be 2010.
Lol don't worry your self trying to convert dollar to naira. Even the dollar quote na lie my brother. Leave Mr. Eazi to eazily be destroying his career with lies cheesy

Today is Sunday and I'm not really at the office but I've been working on a report since yesterday. The deadline (I'm so sure I heard a deadline, but my team members insist there was no such deadline) is tomorrow morning. sad

I'm so pissed cos I hate looking like the 'stuck-up' person. But hey, its our first 'deadline' and the other guys are already on a mission to extend. I'm like " why can't you simply keep up to a simple deadline?"

Now its two ways:
(a) I inisist on submitting tomorrow and then brand myself as the Judas of a new team.
(b) I join the bandwagon and we all submit late (even though they insist there was no deadline)

This is what always frustrates me about working on group projects. Some people would just behave like its their calling to drag the group back. The lady ginjaring the delay said she was ill over weekend, making it seem even more sinister to 'snitch' on her (I wonder of the term 'snitch' even enters the context sef). Politician that she is, she first went to convince the guy who started writing his report earlier in the week and the guy comes on the group to announce "We are not submitting tomorrow!" I'm like: for real? What audacity!

Aaarrrrrghhhhhhh! I feel like hitting something!

Career / Re: Biochemistry Vs Microbiology: Which One Has More Job Opportunities In Nigeria? by Jazmiynne: 2:52am On Sep 13, 2017
erenax:
Hello guys , i would like to know which of these courses has more job oppurtunities as i was asked to select my second choice of study in the university i want to apply for? which of them has a greater chance of job oppurtunities in nigeria?

Whoa! Op this thread reeks of persimism and I can only imagine the depth of your current confusion. I'd feel same too if I were you...

I studied Biochemistry at the Bsc level and then focused on the environmental aspect of Bch at the MSc level.

I'd say you pause from all of these advice and ask yourself "what's my plan?"
The reason being that something must have made you consider those two courses while applying for Jamb. So think about it...
What is that picture you had painted in your mind? The picture you feel that a path in biochemistry/MCB would help you fulfill?

When you identify the final destination you are headed, it becomes easier to chose a path. And in trying to identify this final destination, listen to your passion without of cos ignoring the reality. Lose or win, acceptance of the reality can make you succeed at a rather difficult cause or completely deter you from it.

Now this is what I know as the reality:

* Indeed, getting a job in Nigeria either as Bch/Mcb graduate is not easy, but hey where is it really easy?

* Truly the reality above is worsened by the fact that there's really no BCH/MCB specialized field here in Nigeria. Which of cos means that if you plan to settle abroad, u have no worries cos the courses are hotcake over there.

* Indeed the presence of MLS has worsened reality number 1 especially since many graduates of BCH/MCB hope to work in the lab. The MLS guys have used their association brouhaha to ensure its only their MLS people that near labs, in fact they won't even allow you do IT in a lab sef.

* However, with all the gloom, there is light. If you want to practice Quality Control, I'd say fire down with any of both. Although I have to tell you that getting a QC job isn't easy as almost all the BCH/MCB peeps want this job and employers value experience (which you can get during your IT or through an internship after graduation). Some others do medical sales rep job for pharmaceutical firms before eventually settling into QC. And once they get it, they ain't in a hurry to move. The good news is that the Quality Control/Assurance department has come to stay in the manufacturing industry. So while it may be difficult to secure, the role is ever present. You can work in just as good as anywhere there's manufacturing: pharmaceutical firm, breweries, Fmcgs, Bakeries, Restaurants, Paint firms, in fact anywhere they are producing something. If you start on time to grow your depth in QC, know all the Jurans of the field, you would so love it.

* On the other hand, you may want to venture into HSE/Environmental studies. This is another ripe pasture. The world is going green and slow as it may be, Nigeria is not left behind. In this case I'd say you choose BCH and then do Environmental as MSc. It's a very interesting field. But, if you have no plans for MSc, you could decide to study Environmental straight during BSc. Although its a wider exposure for you to do BCH Bsc and then Environmental MSc.

* However, if your plan was to venture into medicals e.g hospitals or laboratories, this is the time to reconsider. There is no space for BCH/MCB there. The space is clogged up already as almost every graduate of Basic medical sciences believes their 'calling' is in a lab or hospital. No think am, MLS ti take over

* If your plan was to venture into the food part of Biochemistry, why not go fully into food science straight up? Cos I believe you would get more food related knowledge and exposure there. That's because in BCH everyone learns same thing until final year where you get to choose which aspect you like and even then, I feel like it's the basics of the food science they touch. However, if you have MSc plans then go ahead to do BCH first and then food as your MSc that provides wider exposure for you.

* If you also want to do academics, fire down. Only that this path isn't for the faint-hearted. You would need to do BSc and MSc in the same course for most schools. Note that if academics is not your path, do not make the mistake of doing BSc Biochemistry & MSc Biochemistry collabo (same for MCB)... That is a sure path towards frustration.

* Another reality is that, if you indeed choose any of both courses, make sure to excel at your grades and come tops. Anything short of a 2.1 greatly reduces your success chances and increases chances of frustration. People are going to tell you the courses are difficult - BCH for the insane diagrams of pathways and MCB for the jaw-breaking names of microbes. But hey, which course is easy really?

I wish you success. smiley

donpata:
I was moved to write this epistle cos of the fp topic of marrying someone who earns 35k yesterday. I have seen such questions on NL but I normally ignore them. Someone even asked if a lady can marry someone who earns 100k embarassed. I normally laugh at the comments and move on. I laughed at the sheer ignorance of many commenters, and the foolish statements many made. I decided to assume that 70% of the people who commented are either undergraduates still studying who have a big Disney picture of the sweet employment awaiting them or some who have not really known what is out there in the world. The remaining 20% earn well probably and so feel life should be like that for everyone. The remaining 10% commenters are those who really see life as it is in reality – DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS. Now am gonna be objective and subjective at the same time. And let me warn you – IT’S LONG tongue

Me? 30yrs, had my BSc in the north but did my MSc at UI. Hoping to register for Phd by next year.
My fiancée? 24ys old and currently awaiting 300 lv registration. Will be done by 2019.

Fact: without any serious research, I think I am save to say that at least 50% of families (basically father and mother) in Nigeria earn a combined income of less than 40k in a month.
Fact: The federal govt claims it has about 100k civil servants. Add paramilitary and military with about 500k personnel and public office holders, I think 800k people in active service on FG’s payroll is a fair judgment. For the sake of argument, let’s assume fg has another 800k retired personnel on pension. That’s like 1.6 million people. Nigeria has a population of 180million people. The WB estimate Nigeria has a workforce of about 60 million in 2016. If we delete the 1.6million on FGs payroll, we still have about 58.4million people left. Obviously, the remaining are left for the State and Local govt as well as private sector to employ. How many are employed?
Lagos state claims it has about 100,000 workers in its payroll. Let me be liberal enough to use it as a benchmark for all Nigerian states and fct. 100k by 37 = 3.7million employees.
Obviously, we still have over 50million people to employ. How many will the Real private sector pick? Yeah those that will pay a graduate from 60k above – how many can they pick? Now many will have to be entrepreneurs, “self-employed” people, petty traders, artisans etc. How much can they really earn monthly?

Fact: 80% of state and LGA workers between level 1 and 10 earn less than 50k in a month. Apart from states like Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and a few others, most states, especially in the North, pay quite low. On level 8, with Kad Govt, I earn 35-37k. It fluctuates monthly. Note that there are married people with at least 3 children that are on lev 1 - 6. Do the maths.

Wedding:
Many asked how one will pay bride price. Well, I have crossed that bridge. I know my status so before I even got a lady, I started buying some stuff like wrappers to keep. More so, my savings, family and friends rally round me and that was solved. Only a foolish lady will think of bride price as an issue here. Except if her family is poor, why should they demand too much?. 2 of my sisters that married had their bride price pegged at 5k each. The total money paid on the first was 25k and 50k for the 2nd. Mind you, they are currently running their masters programme so they ain’t illiterates. Let me stop here.

So the Wedding? How will I handle it? SIMPLE: I AM CUTTING MY COAT ACCORDING TO MY POCKET

Box: I went to the market and saw boxes of 100-200k. I was showed a set of 5 for 30k as well. I opted for a set of 5 at 60k. That’s my own level too. Mind you there were people picking that of 30k too. Different strokes for Different folks.

RECEPTION VENUE: Church Premises. My church got a lot of space so why should I spend 200-500k (that I don’t even have) renting a hall for a 2hr event? A guy who got married last month in my Church did not do reception at all. Again, Different strokes for Different folks.

Wedding Cards: Saw a nice foreign one. They said it will cost me 30k per 100. I needed 500. I was showed another that will cost 5k per 100. I Finally opted for the one of 10k per 100. Even got a 5k discount.

My suit? I opted for a 16k suit and my best man decided to pay for it.

My shoes? I got really nice shoes but coz it’s my day, I opted for new ones. I picked up a very nice one for 2k. It aint top notch quality but it should take me through the day. It can actually pass for a ck or d&g when viewed from a distance.

My Chairs and Canopies? My organizers are 20. Lol grin. They have paid 80% of the money.

Cake? My aunt who has a HND in catering bla bla and has been in it for almost 15yrs running has taken that as her contribution.

DJ and Camera man? My men in suit, (5 in number) have paid for that service. tongue

MC? A friend is good at it. That is his contribution.

Wedding Gown: My cake designer linked me to a lady who rents out. She thus charged us 10k for a nice wedding gown. I deposited 5k. Will pay 5k after the event.
Need I continue? I don’t think so.

The main thing – The marriage life
Yeah I know you are saying all I have said na wash. You are waiting for how reality will hit me after the marriage cos that’s the main deal. You gonna say you await my regret thread after some few months. Sorry, your expectation will be cut short.

Fees:
Now, my to-be wife will be registering for a new session by December. Her fees is just arnd 30k so I kept that amount and I have promised myself not to touch it until its time. I don’t even need to touch it. Everything appears almost set and done.

Clothing: I filled my wife’s box to the “brim” with both native and English wears. coolSo for now, cloths aint really an issue.

Accommodation: Here in KD, a 1 bedroom mini flat cost between 80-150k depending on the location. Am not talking of a 2 room flat cos, truly, I don’t need it now. But I am not even thinking of taking the mini flat either. A room and parlor (real face me I face u) cost between 18k-45k depending on the location. There are better ones; mostly new houses that cost 40-60k. I’ve gotten a very nice one for 55k. Just 2 tenants in the house and the other guy is single so we just gonna be sharing the toilet with him. It’s not that I can’t afford it but wisdom must direct me. I got 2plots of land already so I don’t even intend staying in that house beyond a year or 2.

My building: I already have 2 plots of land. I’ve struck an agreement with some guys who will supply me mud blocks at N20 each. At my estimate of 3000 blocks, that’s 60k grin. Havent paid but after my wedding, I will do it jejely. My plan is to rush the building and roof it b4 the rains come next year. I paid some guys in my area 7k so by next week, they are gonna go there and dig the foundation of a 2bedroom flat for me. Not that I am building now but I have to dig during the rainy season cos the land gets hard during the dry season. My intention is to use just ¼ of the land for that so that when I am blessed wella, I will use the remaining ¾ of the land to build my pent house. Need I tell you that by estimates, I need 6 bundles of those “aluminum” sheets to roof it? I bought 3 last year when it was 16k. I could not add cos it went up to 30k. I heard it’s 20k now but I can’t buy the remaining 3 now cos of my wedding preps. Will do that after my wedding when I have relaxed a bit.

Feeding?
A 50kg bag of rice takes me over 5 months now that I am alone. I believe in varieties so I got different things stocked in my room. Adding one or two extra plate should not make life difficult. I planted maize on my 2 plots. Once harvested, I won’t need to buy semovita all the time. If you have been to the north, you will know that with my harvest, Tuwo is served. Need I continue? I don’t think so. Let me not bore you further.

My support to extended Families
Someone asked in that thread that how do one take care of his families and inlaws. Well, my family aint rich but they can cater for themselves. My dad and mum earn and have only one child left in the university. Moreover, they are sensible enough to know that they should not expect from me. Rather, what is sensible is for them to support me if need be tongue. My fiancées’ parents aint rich either. But I know they aint so poor to demand me to take care of their own responsibility when they know I have their daughter to cater for. Of coz, once in a while, I will do what I can for our families.

Children
Just a child and I will pause until she is done with school. I know it’s gonna come with challenges but I don’t think you expect me to plan out every day of my life and budget for same here. I know that I will cross the bridge when I get there.

Other wants
I am a gadget freak. Before my wedding preps, I buy things impulsively. Now I know I have to control that. I know what lies ahead of me. That’s why I didn’t go for an iphone but went for a hot note. When the hot note packed up, I didn’t kill myself for a Samsung s7 even though I love it. I went for my sweet Ulefone Tiger @ 31k. When I went for a tab, I didn’t go for an ipad; not even a tecno pad. I went for imose xii tongue. Instead of ps3 console, I download games to my laptop and play them. That serves me.

I CAN TRULY GO ON AND ON BUT CALLING SOMEONE A FOOL AS MANY DID ON THAT THREAD YESTERDAY IS QUITE ILLOGICAL. My dad married at 24. My mum was 19 then. Both are now degree holders. Things have changed and that’s why I am marrying at 30. I don’t want to clock 50 and yet taking my first child to write Common Entrance. If you like say I am rushing.
Firstly, I love my fiancée die. 2ndly, I am a Christian and my bodily desires are building up strongly. Marriage is the way out. 3rdly, I love kids. Since they are an inheritance, I can’t wait to have one as God wills. Lastly, I wanna retire in peace. Not old man using my pension to train undergraduates and Jambites.
Finally, I am not complacent with where I am. I have handled a few millions before but this is where I am now. I wanna go for my phd and I hope to reestablish myself in business. But I can’t again let my social life suffer cos of where I am today. I have a job now; low paying as it is, I know if well managed, I will make it out. Even if I remain in the employ of the State Govt, I cant earn 35k forever. I am young and will keep moving on.

DISCLAIMER: grin This is not meant to force anyone to get married when he is not ready - Not at all. I just want some people to know that there are different strokes for different folks. There are too many factors that determine happiness and success in life and marriage. Your salary is just one. YOU CANT CALL ME A FOOL FOR MY DECISION. I HAVE CAREFULLY WEIGHED MY CIRCUMSTANCE AND PROSPECTS AND I FEEL I AM READY TO TAKE THE LEAP. I KNOW IT WONT BE A WALK IN THE PARK; BUT IT WONT BE TOO DIFFICULT EITHER.
FOR THE “FOOLS AT 40” WAITING FOR THEIR MILLIONS TO BUILD UP BEFORE SETTLING DOWN, TILL UNA COME.
FORGIVE ME FOR THE LONG EPISTLE.
HAD TO TAKE MY TIME SO THAT SOME PEOPLE WILL APPRECIATE THAT NO TWO PEOPLE HAVE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES AND SITUATIONS.

I PROMISE TO RAISE ANOTHER THREAD ANNUALLY TO TELL YOU HOW FAR WE HAVE GONE. wink

Nice one smiley
