first we are talking about refineries, secondly the US didn't get rid of its manufacturing because of pollution but because of competition and cost of manufacturing, even dirty coal is still producing about half of yankees electricity
i'm talking about the pollution from refineries so I can compare it to manufacturing. many run on fuel anyways. and refineries even produce more pollution.
If only you knew how strict US federal pollution regulations are. Sometimes, it's cheaper to offshore them. But i'm sure other factors are also involved such as labor cost.

I'm not saying refineries shouldn't be build. but we should also look at the other arguments. In fact, in the article you will see that the main reason why refineries aren't being built is because of the Niger delta crisis.

it may be ok for us to refine petroleum for our own use but my fear is that we will end up being an exporter of refined petroleum .govt will want the money and it will be cost effective but lipsrsealed

Group Executive Director, Refinery and Petrochemicals, at NNPC, Mr. Austin Oniowon, had declared at a forum in Lagos that "a lot of things have gone wrong with the management of the nation's refineries." He said the key problem with internal refining was the security issues in the Niger Delta.
The refineries were brought down by crude feedstock outage after militants in the Niger Delta blew up the feedstock conduits in the heat of sustained campaign against the industry.

Very happy indeed, and we shall keep winning this medal, as long as our unhappy brethren keep jetting out of the country and live outside our happy shores!
hahahaha. I was reading one comment on the website. to paraphrase, it said, the unhappy people are leaving the country so that only happy people are left. Thats why Nigeria is the happiest country on earth! hahaha
grin

but seriously though, I don't think Nigerians abroad are any happier than those at home. yea life is more convenient and stable. but not necessarily happier. money can't buy happiness. happiness is not material. to me, hope for the future, friends and family + God are better reasons to be happy.
even lottery winners end up regretting it because of all the woes the money brought them. some commit suicide.

but all the same, I don't think happiness can truly be objectively measured. scientists can only try. so who knows, the british that rank -44% on pessimism may in fact be happier than Nigerians who rank 70% on optimism.

If thats the case many countries will do away with their refineries, best option is to builder more efficient refineries and TO BE HONEST I CANT REMEMBER THE LAST TIME NIGERIA GOT THE UPPERHAND IN ANY NEGOTIATION
The US has done away with majority of it's manufacturing industries and offshored it to china. China is battling massive pollution as we speak. Cancer is the leading cause of death. That's the price for industrialization I guess.
To me, sooner or later after China has developed (if it ever does), Africa will be the next stop to dump industrial toxins and manufacturing and I think this will last a very long time because where else will we dump ours if we are at the bottom of the rung?
I think our government should start thinking about the future today. We can start by developing a breed of quality diplomats and looking out for our own good. I think it is possible to achieve some upperhand if we argue right rather than licking everybody's boots.

PoliticsRe: Fuel Scarcity Gone For Good - Nnpc (talking In Its Sleep?) by Jenifa1: 9:27pm On Jan 06, 2011
building refineries is a double edged sword. it is a benefit and also a liability because of the pollution it will unleash on us for many generations to come. we are already a poor country. I don't know how well we will battle air, water, soil etc pollution and toxins.
so let us continue with our french trading partner jejerly.  The best solution is to strike a good deal that will give us a good upperhand so cost isn't too high.

See its a black problem not a nigerian problem grin
didn't ngugi wa thiongo write about how under colonial rule kenyans were limited from owning businesses.  the rights were mostly given to the indians and lebanese. or something like that.
not even sure of the specifics.
PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by Jenifa1: 12:22am On Jan 06, 2011
I think igbos are very entrepreneural. Nigerians in general are entrepreneurial
a lot of times, market is based on confidence and trust. we are quicker to place this on lebanese and westerners. many nigerian businesses are failing because no one wants to invest in them.

AjanleKoko:
While we're at it, what about India? I've been privileged to visit both countries, and trust me, they are very similar to Nigeria in terms of infrastructure. The closest they have to Western type facilities in India is Bangalore and Hyderabad, which kind of looked like Abuja to me. But these guys are also major global players.
I was watching a documentary about india and from what I got from it, things started to pick up when the country's economy became more capitalist. with rigid state control and red tape, entrepreneurial spirit was stiffened.

reminds me of the topic on the front page of PCHN going private. lol. we'll wait to see if it will bring us electricity.

Broth from meat, fish e.t.c . Iru is best used for soups
yup. If i buy fresh meat and fish, I don't need to use maggi. I just make a broth with salt and use it to season my soup or whatever it is i'm cooking. maggi is mostly for convenience. and it really is convenient. besides it's hard to find iru here.

amor4ce:
I recently used some iru as seasoning for a pot of beans that I cooked for my family. Shyting became few and far between, and it wasn't constipation but more like the abdominal muscles that were supposed to contract and lead to expulsion went on strike or "work-to-rule".

Also, my dad once used omi iru to tackle high blood pressure which was over 220mmHg (systolic) and it was normalized within 24hrs. But the stench is something else.
it is the fermentation. Iru is fermented locust beans.
In the US, people use apple cidar vinegar  drink (fermented apples) to also lower blood pressure. of course not a lot of people know this because the pharmaceutical companies and doctors do no want you to know about  it.

Then there is the issue of consent. It would now be a question of his word against hers.
Anyway it is interesting that some of these women would still like to play the victim card and blame spiking instead of facing up to the consequences of their drunken antics.
that's why to me, partial blame rests on them. even if you want to get drunk, do it among trusted friends and responsibly.

CC, when you wash her hair, wash in sections. put her hair into 6 braids before washing so that it doesn't tangle. her hair will still be clean don't worry.
after washing and towelling (use a cotton shirt preferable as opposed to the conventional towerl), take out each section of braid and saturate the damp hair with coconut oil. twist as you go till it's all done!

the first time, dont worry too much about making perfect lines. just use your fingers and be gentle. you don't even need a comb.

make sure to moisturize on damp hair or use a water-based moisturizer. water= moisture.

In most cases of date r.ape, the victims are actually drugged, at least cases that i've heard of in the UK
that's the generally conception.
80% of date violation involves just alcohol. no drugs.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/6440589/Date-violation-drink-spiking-an-urban-legend.html

"The Telegraph reported Oct. 27 that Kent University researchers who studied 200 students found that many blamed their incapacitation on alleged spiking of drinks with drugs like Rohypnol or GHB when, in fact, they had drank to excess. Researchers concluded that many drinkers were in denial about their level of alcohol use and its debilitating effects.

Three-quarters of those surveyed cited drink spiking as a major risk in sexual assault -- far more than saw the risk in being drunk, taking drugs, or walking alone at night. But police say there's no evidence that violation victims are commonly drugged before attacks."

I am sure that is not violation. The key issue in violation cases is consent not drunkeness.

well then I see nothing wrong with marrying from naija. I've met people who married from naija with no problem actually. To me, it's a function of age and mentality. Older men in their late 30s and 40s or if they are uneducated will be less successful than guys who are younger and already westernized to some extent.

For me, I cannot in a lifetime picture myself married to a nigerian person who grew up his entire life in Nigeria. I puke in my mouth a little at the mere thought of it. Has to be someone born here (any race) or came here at a younger age. preteen or early teen at most (also any race).

2) I am really hard to move when it comes to girls and their swagger, i just don't know why. If i don't not find a girl attractive now, it wouldn't change after downing 6 glasses of Hennesy and Red bull. Could be because of my many encounters with girls in my lifetime.
you must be really young. This kind of one night stand attraction you are describing is not what you should be looking for in marriage. That kind grows over time from friendship. at least that's my opinion. lol but I agree that attraction plays some role.

One day one of my friend they were coming from the club and just came to my house with this girl. From her accent I knew she is just from Naija and she too confirmed it. She was dangerously drunk. the coconut oil is pure unrefined and organic. definitely not a cosmetic cream.
it should come in a jar. and sometimes even promoted as a cooking oil (another one of its uses grin) it's really hard in the cold but if you put it near the heater or in a warm room, it is very soft and turns into oil. very low freezing and melting point.

most of the important points have been brought up.
another one is security if it hasn't already been mentioned. there is very little state protection of property rights. this can discourage or de-incentivize potential entrepreneurs.

In Africa, our fore-fathers had so much time on their hands that they just had many kids.
hahah that's so harsh cheesy
they need helping hands on the farms now. and children to take care of them when they are old. there is no government social security in naija o. your social security is your many kids. lol i'm sure ur parents are reaping their effort when you send money home every month. lol

Those twists in that picture, can I do them myself? Do I just twist 2 strands of hair together? or do I need to add some extensions like expression or something to give it body

I am going to the African hair shop over the weekend to see if I can get any of the products mentioned here.

You should have seen my daughers face when I mentioned egg yoke & honey to her LOL.

If parents got a chance to select the traits that they want for their children from each parent before they are born LOL; I am sure whose name would have been crossed out when it comes to hair  grin
hahah I love your sense of humor  grin grin

yes you can do those twists yourself. the first couple of times won't look as neat but you will get better with time. and yup you just twist two strands of hair. it is really simple. just time consuming if you make them tiny and if her hair is really long but worth it. they could last weeks if they are small enough.

you don't need extensions. natural hair naturally has body. because it shrinks/coils up

one product i would recommend is coconut oil. pure unrefined coconut oil. can be found at whole foods. it is the best moisturizer ever. apply it on damp hair - spray a little bit of water on a section of her hair and moisturize with coconut oil etc. her hair will retain the moisture for a long time.
the cheapest and most effective product IMO. you can google it for more info.

one warning is that coconut oil has a low freezing point so it literally freezes on the hair/ twists when you are outside in the cold but will melt immediately you enter a warm room lol I don't have any problem with this. it doesn't alter it's appearance or anything. but when you touch it, it feels as if your hair is frozen  cheesy i tend to have fun with it.

but definitely try coconut oil. even if you end up feeling you don't like it you can use it to moisturize your body or hers.

it maybe true. but I also think the father's behavior toward the mother also affect their behavior toward women.

yea there is a lot of fakeness among upper middle class white people. but i've learned to live with it and embrace the positive aspects (i.e less drama). It can be annoying sometimes how individualistic their lives and even social relationships tend to be. hard to find a true friend among them unless they are religious or are exposed (yrs of living abroad, personal interests etc). this is my experience at least.

yea that's true. marrying someone outside of your culture is not that easy. I was mostly referring to the wives of these men. the white women and the likes. To me, their marriages are easier on them.
@Jenifa: Hrm. There are lots of crazy insane, feminist type of women in the Western world, women who want to emasculate their dudes.

But there are lots of traditional type of women too. The type who will work a 9-5 and still want to come home and cook for their man, etc. The type that aren't going to act out of control just because they earn a lot of money (or more money than you), are lawyers, doctors, etc.

I don't necessarily want a housegirl, but I do want a traditionalist type of wife rather than some feminist. Or a woman who will turn into a radical feminist if you run out of cash. . .
If i work 9-5 and come back home to do all the housework + childcare (which is a full time job on it's own right), then I most certainly expect compensation in the form of vacations, nice car, paying less share of bills etc.

to me, marrying a white guy is easier because these men do not have problems with cooking, doing dishes or babysitting. helping out in the house is not something that will crush their "ego" because it's something their father probably does. so it's part of their culture.
I have male professors that leave class early because "it's their turn to pick up the kids from school" I wish more Nigerian men were like that. It will be so much easier on these poor Nigerian women.

YUP. they will even quote the bible for you and tell you it is Nigerian tradition. women must be submissive even if her husband is unemployed or making less.
even couples who work equal hours. the wife is expected to come back home and do all the housework and child care. This is even more tolerable and many nigerian women compromise this. but still, i'm sure if you piss such a woman off, she is likely to fight back because she's independent and has rights.

is there anything wrong with doing the groceries or picking up the kids?! what about the lawn?
hahah most nigerian men will not be caught dead doing that. to them, it's the woman's job. They want to live a nigerian lifestyle in the US. I mean it's possible but you have to play your cards right. Get a nice paying job, find a wife who will agree with those terms etc.
FamilyRe: I Regret Bringing My Wife Abroad by Jenifa1: 4:38am On Jan 05, 2011
most nigerian men are brought up with the idea that they are the "head of household" and the wife should be submissive.
If you have a wife who makes more money, I don't think she wants to play the role of housegirl anymore. not especially after she has moved to a country like the US where there are freedom and rights for women.
for example, she can call the police if her husband raises his hands on her.etc  Most human beings like freedom. you can't expect a village girl to come to the US and not take advantage of her new rights. it is in the human nature to reject a subservient role if they have the choice.

even many white men who import russian brides have the same problem. they think the poor girls will be submissive only to find out that the girls change very quickly.

What I think is that Nigerian men should learn to adapt to American and western society. Wishing for a housegirl submissive wife is going to be a hard goal to achieve in a western society. If you don't want to adapt, why not move back to Nigeria. Or better still, work hard and make a lot of money then your wife will listen to every word you say.

like Orton said, "he who beats the drum dictates the tune"
FamilyRe: I Regret Bringing My Wife Abroad by Jenifa1: 4:10am On Jan 05, 2011
I know a few nigerians who brought their wives and kids back or came together with their spouses.
The problem arises when the wife starts making more money than the husband in the US. the husband can't control her anymore like he does in naija. it's crazy. There are many topics about some nigerian men even killing their wives abroad.
you will see that the problem in this story is MONEY. lol always the same issue.
