If we are to be honest with one another and not deceive ourselves, a hardworking, hands-on government will be able to give us constant electricity in as little as 10 years. Anything short of that is a pipe dream. Here is my analysis.
A Country's power requirements are never just "met". Power requirements are not static, they are constantly increasing.
Let's use Ekiti state for example.
If the average Ekiti household receives 2 hours of electricity per day now, what happens when a government is able to increase that to 4hrs/ day and then to 8hrs/day? Note that 8hrs here is arbitrary. (It just represents a significant improvement from what was previously supplied)
Here's what: Somewhere along the line as power increases, more people will be willing to invest in other sectors of the economy. In other words, if I only had 2 hours before, and now I have 8hrs, that "may" stimulate me to go buy a TV if I didn't have one before. It "may" stimulate me to go buy an Air Conditioner if I didn't already own one. It may stimulate me to go buy a fridge or freezer so I don't have to go to the market every day. If I use my generator less, I may have some extra cash I may wish to invest in an electric cooking range or anything I want.
Consequently, as I get more electricity, and begin to trust the availability of electricity, I will begin to buy more items that use up more electricity. The average person with access to constant electricity will "want" a TV, Fridge, Freezer, AC and many more. Note that I said "want". Not everyone will be able to afford, but then, if we begin saving on petrol and diesel, you'd be surprised how much becomes available for purchase of consumer goods.
Business-wise, as my electricity improves, I as a businessman will be more willing to buy more equipment to expand my business. The barber may decide to get an Air Conditioner to upgrade the status of his shop. The Carpenter may decide to buy a few power tools to make his job easier, or to buy a new machine that improves the quality of his work. A restaurant may decide to buy ice-machines, electric ovens and grills, and such things. These are all just basic examples.
As our power generation begins to increase, people will respond by buying more.
Due to the average income of Nigerians now, it is possible to state that Nigeria, though a third the size of South Africa, may require 40,000MW of electricity today. I don't know for sure.
If 40,000MW is sufficient to provide uninterrupted electricity this morning, it won't be enough tomorrow night because I and a lot of Nigerians who can afford it will have run to the market to get us deep freezers, fridges, cookers, ACs and so many more things. Companies will begin to use more energy. Industries will begin to expand their manufacturing lines. Things that were done manually may now be considered cheaper to do by machine. All these will consume more power. This is why we must realize that Nigeria will need more than 100,000MW to achieve Sustained Uninterrupted Power Supply.
We need to know: 1. Our current power requirements. 2. Projected increase in the power requirements over time, and as individuals and businesses react to improved supply. 3. How much we have available to spend on power.
I don't think the average Nigerian understands the magnitude of our problem. A stitch in time saves nine, they say. We are going to have to do 9 times as much work as if we had done this over the past 25 years.
I think constant electricity would be extremely difficult to achieve in 10 years, even by a government that is absolutely and 100% committed. Nonetheless, All things are possible.
GEJ government is not 100% committed to anything.
100,000MW of electricity will require $100 billion in investment.
I even doubt the 100,000MW can meet projected increases in requirements as supply improves.
We cannot go from 4,000MW to 40,000MW in 4 years. We cannot go from 4,000MW to 100,000MW in less than 10 years. Even if we have the will, we still need the money, and time to plan, and have the necessary structures sited, and the turbines ordered, built, tested, shipped in, transported, and then installed. I won't even bother touching on how gas or coal will reach the power stations.
We are reaping the fruits of our years of neglect of the power sector.

blink182: I was suspecting you only seemed to be brilliant but the bolded confirmed that you dont know what you're talking about, please go research properly. Do you know what china is? 4000mw will not even power an industrial park in china and you think 40000mw and 4000gw are the same, wake up! No need to resort to insults my dear sir. Efisher's post is still up for reference. efisher: @blink182, That's the difference between me and a lot of other people. I always try to see things from other people's perspectives. Based on that, I make an effort to balance me opinion. Even if Buhari or Ribadu makes the same statement, my judgement is that 4 years is fair enough for a serious president to achieve near 100% power availability.
As for the Chinese example I gave, do you know that China added 3.3 GW in 2007 from wind energy alone! That is about 800 times the installed capacity of the entire Nigerian power sector. China actually astonished the world with this development.
Reference: http://www.worldwatch.org/node/5758
I know we cannot compare Nigeria and China but these examples are just to show that we can do it in a year with the right people, policies, procedures and practices. For instance, imagine what a gas to power project at zero gas price to electricity generating companies will do to our power sector. 1,000MW (Megawatts) = 1GW 3,300MW (Megawatts) = 3.3GW and 3.3GW is what efisher referenced to be 800 times the power generation of Nigeria. He did not say 3,300GW. Kindly note that the United States generates around 4,400GW of electricity. Only a tiny amount of that is from wind power. |

Beaf: ^ Dude, your estimate for solar power is way too high. I strongly suspect that your definition of how to harvest it is narrow. Sorry Bros. Large scale solar farming is up to 8 times as expensive as just burning fossil fuels. Some good sources can be found online to support that point. If one is quite lucky though, you can bring it down to 5 times the cost of deploying a Coal/Gas Plant. |

For instance, imagine what a gas to power project at zero gas price to electricity generating companies will do to our power sector. @efisher Your point makes a lot of sense. Solar power is a joke and cannot be used in Nigeria. Here's my analysis from previous research on this topic. 1,000MW via gas or coal costs on average $800 million to $1.2billion 1,000MW via wind turbines costs on average $1.8 billion to $2.4billion 1,000MW via solar energy costs on average $6 billion to $8 billion These are global averages. Wind power may hold a lot of promise in Nigeria. The advantage for us is that the power stations won't require construction of gas pipelines. I did say may though because not every region of the world receives adequate wind speeds to produce significant power. When citing a wind turbine, Anemometry readings must be taken for a minimum of 2 to 3 years to determine whether wind speeds are constantly high enough to maintain power. Btw, Nigeria's generation is approx. 4,000MW (4GW). So, the China example above is actually equivalent to Nigeria's total power generation and not 800 times as much as you speculated. Just a minor point though. Our $16billion "invested" by the PDP should have provided us b/w 12,000MW to 18,000MW of Gas/Coal generated power or 6,000MW to 8,000MW of Wind-generated power. I do think a state like Plateau could have high enough wind speeds in certain areas to generate power. Come to think of it. I think I'll go buy some anemometry equipment and visit Plateau state when next in Nigeria. Could set up a 2 year experiment to that end. |

okooyinbo: I dont understand how Nigerians are so enamoured with cooked up stories. If your postulation were right, dont you think Buhari would have talked about it when the question of unsuccessful alliance was adressed at him? The answer from Buhari never confirmed this insinuation of yours. I apologize if you missed the Memo on Buhari. Buhari does not run his mouth. He does not talk and rant like the average Nigerian. Everybody, including members of the ACN, will tell you that the reason the alliance failed was because Tinubu insisted on being the Vice President. Simple and short. Every honest Nigerian who is interested in this topic knows this. Buhari asked that someone else be nominated, Tinubu said NO WAY. That is the reason the alliance failed. Even ACN members have admitted this. |
Politics › Re: Acn Rules Out Alliance With Cpc by jensinmi(m): 12:24pm On Mar 21, 2011 |
It is common knowledge that the CPC/ ACN alliance failed because Tinubu insisted that he and only he will run as Buhari's Vice President.
I've been thinking lately and I've come to this conclusion - If this election ends in the need for a run-off between Buhari and GEJ, I won't be surprised if Tinubu's ACN lines up behind GEJ.
The reasons are
1. GEJ will be willing to make concessions (Give ACN a few ministries and appointments) in exchange for their support. 2. Buhari is a man who doesn't believe in compromising. He'll stand his ground. Buhari will refuse to dine with the devil. He will make no concessions to Tinubu and company.
TAKE NOTE: BUHARI WOULD RATHER LOSE THIS ELECTION, THAN ALLOW HIMSELF TO BE MANIPULATED BY SOME PEOPLE OR SPECIAL INTERESTS. THAT IS HIS WAY.
He reminds me of Rorschach from the Watchmen comics and movies.
In Buhari's case, I think that is a good thing. THE END NEVER JUSTIFIES THE MEANS. |

If you build an airport for 2 million hungry people who don't plan on going anywhere, then don't be surprised if the airport never gets the thousands of daily arrivals and daily departures needed to keep it viable. Population is not a single good enough factor to support airport construction. If it were, Darfur would be a good candidate for a spanking new airport. Hungry and starving people don't board planes.@ Topic By the way, it is just like that foolish idea to build an International Airport in Ado-Ekiti. Have you ever heard anyone in JFK, Heathrow or Houston International Airports saying, "I wish I could get a direct flight to Ado-Ekiti". I'm from Ado-Ekiti and spend several months there each year. I will not enter a direct flight from the United States to Ado-Ekiti International Airport. I'd just do my usual trip to Lagos, and find my way down there. Even in the Western world, a commute from your home of 45 minutes to 1hr to the nearest airport is considered the shortest possible by most, unless of course you want to go buy a house next to the airport. (Have fun with that ). A 45 minute to 1hr drive will get you from Ado-Ekiti to Akure Airport. So, why bother building an Airport in Ado-Ekiti, other than to waste money. Anyone who wants to fly should do the 45-minute drive. The rest of us will spend the money on something beneficial to the general populace. |

PhysicsMHD: They (the CPC) should never have allowed Mohammed Abacha to contest on the party's platform if they were averse to him being governor of Kano in the first place (as this story seems to suggest they were). He could just be expelled from the party (anti-party activity; not following the directives of the party leaders) if he decided to contest without their approval.
That he was able to join the party, and then able to contest on their platform shows that someone or some people in the CPC were fine with it and may have given him the go ahead earlier only for them to oppose him as candidate when he actually won (to their surprise, probably). @PhysicsMHD God Bless you 1 million times sir. You have hit the nail on the head. The blame for this nonsense goes straight on the heads of the CPC. They should never have accepted this man into their fold. He should not have been given membership into the party because it was well known he was going for Governor. They accepted him. Primary time came - He began to pop champagne for the delegates. Handing out mad amounts of cash. As a result, he won the primaries. Buhari and co heard this and felt it was unacceptable, but alas, a stitch in time saves nine. Politics › Re: God Father Tinubu; Says Fashola Has No Business Appointing Commissioners by jensinmi(m): 10:11pm On Mar 01, 2011 |
Alj Uche: FORMER LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR AND FOUNDER OF THE ACTION CONGRESS OF NIGERIA (ACN), ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU
LAGOS, Feb 24, (THEWILL) - Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu today described how former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) frustrated the alliance talks between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
Tinubu also stated that it is the sole responsibility of the ACN to appoint cabinet members into the Lagos State Executive Council adding that state Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola has no business appointing commissioners into his cabinet.
The former governor made the revelation at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, where he alleged that the leadership of the PDP paid some people who participated in the talks to ensure that the discussions failed on the ground that an ACN/CPC alliance posed a huge threat to the PDP regime.
“The PDP paid some people to frustrate the party’s effort because it knew that if the alliance should work, the PDP would be swept out of office. The ruling party worked against the alliance through its agents planted within,” the former governor said. Tinubu’s position was corroborated by another leader of the ACN who spoke with THEWILL on the condition of anonymity, adding that Obasanjo planted some of his loyalists around the presidential candidate of the CPC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari and mandated them to frustrate alliance talks. The source however did not name Obasanjo’s loyalists who were allegedly used to frustrate the success of the alliance talks, but explained that three loyalists of Obasanjo “are working with Buhari on false pretence. They have been delegated and planted to frustrate Buhari’s Presidential ambition since 2003. “We know them. We found out that they are on pay roll of the ruling party. They are close allies of President Obasanjo. They are very much in touch. Asiwaju Tinubu raised the issue during the alliance talk. We did not take his objection very seriously, but it later became very clear that he had a point,” the party man added. At the meeting, the former governor also shed more light on the emergence of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu’s running mate, Mr. Fola Adeola, saying former Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and the incumbent Commissioner of Economic Planning and Budget, Pastor Ben Akabueze were presented to be Ribadu’s running mate from the inception of the Presidential race.
But Tinubu said the party leadership ruled against Osinbajo because he was in the same legal profession with Ribadu, explaining that the party insisted that two legal professionals could not hold two strategic positions in the country, and favoured instead any candidate with requisite experience in managing economy.
“Akabueze was subsequently contacted to be Ribadu’s running mate because of his experience in economic planning and budget management. But he rejected the offer because he claimed he had not decongested his table, which he described as tough and was not ready to add any additional one.
“We needed somebody with the vast knowledge of the economy and budget planning who can explain economic theories according to the realities of the time. That is how we succumbed to the choice of former Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), Mr. Fola Adeola,” he further stated.
Tinubu however said he did not force his wife, Oluremi to go into politics. He added that “it was purely her decision. Politics was not for people like her because of the insult she would get while on the political field,” he said. He added that he did not take her seriously at first but that when Oluremi told him she was serious about it, he had no choice but to support her, recalling that the former First Lady and her daughter suffered a lot during the Abacha regime and that the house where Oluremi and her daughter were staying was almost set ablaze. He also said it "took the intervention of the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti who rescued them and procured visas for them to leave the country. Remi convinced me that she wants to go into politics and I accepted.” Tinubu thereafter threw more light on the appointment of members into the State Executive Council of Lagos State. He said it is not the business of the governor to appoint commissioners into his cabinet maintaining that it is the sole responsibility of the party to do so because, many trusted people campaigned with the governor on the field and hence should be rewarded.
"If it were to be Fashola and Co. Company, Governor Raji Fashola would have had the power to choose whoever he wanted to appoint to work with him in his chamber. But contrary is the case when we talk of the appointment of commissioners and special advisers," Tinubu further stated.

johnie: More detailed record of the sermon from Compass Newspaper:
While delivering a message titled: ‘A Minister and a Witness, the Canon of the Church, Ven. Tayo Aduloju, noted that the service had generated a lot of interest from different quarters and from many people.
He said: “Some people wondered why we should hold a thanksgiving service for Bode George who is not penitent? Others say he will bring stolen money to the church; others say he will bring politicians to the church to corrupt the church; yet others say he might have given us money.
“Really, I have seen a lot of politicians here today and outside there are bandstands like a political rally.
“But, it is better to be in the presence of God, than in the presence of Satan who has nothing good to offer. Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, is blessed with prominent people and Chief Olabode George is one of them. We have financial resources and do not need to do any Finebara, either for any individual, government or for any dubious means; we don’t need your money.
“It is very good that you are here, I am very sure that you will not invite a man of God, a Pastor, to come and preach at your rally, but you have brought yourself here, and we must tell you the truth. I am not one of the Priests, one of the Pastors who will sugar coat you, who will be currying favour of people, who will be afraid to tell the people the truth, because what we do here is to prepare people for heaven; any soul that is lost through any pastor, he will pay for it. Any blood that is shed through any pastor he will pay for it, but it is good for you to make heaven than for you to die and go to hell.
“It is not a one-man church or a private business that is profit oriented, the only gift God wants from you today, is for you to give your life to Christ, so that he can transform you and make you a better person; that is the only way your presence here can be of any good to him.
“If you are here for political reasons, if you are here to mess up Bode George, if you are here to criticize the priest of this church, I leave you to your conscience and to God; God will surely judge your motive for being here today.
“It is better for you to be blessed by God than to be judged, because the Bible says it is a terrible thing to fall into the hand of the living God.
“Chief Olabode George, you are a member of this church, and nobody can deny this fact; people may deny you, but God will never deny you. People you have helped, friends and some relatives may have denied you, but Jesus will never deny you, and that is why the Bible says that you have an advocate with the father, Jesus is your advocate.
“That you are a Christian does not mean you cannot go wrong, it does not mean you cannot sin, it does not mean you cannot falter, man condemns you, but Jesus will never condemn you.”
He advised George not to think of paying back those who did him in, and sent him to jail, “this is not a time for you to brook, or worse still plan for revenge, if you do that that means you are ungrateful to God who did not allow you to die in prison, in this country we know that a General died in prison, but you went, God protected you, God has brought you out for a purpose”.
He also urged him to henceforth live a sober live, conscious of where God brought him out from, adding: “Your prayers to God now is for him to show you the way forward, to grant you the grace to live a righteous and sober life, so that the end of your life will be better than the beginning, if you go ahead with arrogance, if you are found where elections are rigged, if you are in any way near where papers are forged or falsified or you are involved in any shady deal, that means you have not learnt anything from your imprisonment.
“When I was in secondary school, you were the governor of my state. I am from Ondo State; you became a Commodore in the Nigerian Navy, The PDP South West Chairman, NPA Chairman and your party the PDP is still ruling, all these put together, political powers, military power, economic power, could not and did not prevent you from being imprisoned; what does that tell you? It shows that real powers belong to God and not to man, power belongs to God, not to man, not to PDP, not to any party, power belongs to God. Remember that you are a governor today tomorrow you will be, you are anybody today, tomorrow you will not be, tomorrow I will not be here.
“I don’t want you to leave the rest of your life in bitterness, chasing after shadows, you can borrow a leave from Dr. Nelson Mandela, who didn’t allow bitterness to ruin his life; you must learn from the best, you must show that you are penitent; you must show that you are sober, you must show that you have had an encounter with the Lord. I asked him just before the service in my Vestry, why are you here today? Why are you doing this thanksgiving? Is it for you to justify yourself, to say oh I didn’t do it? He said, no, God protected him he didn’t allow him to die in prison, and for the encounter he had with him; for the relationship he developed with Jesus Christ and that you should not let go.
“If you are outside in the last two years you could have been killed, through accident, through poison or by any means, you must be grateful to God.”
Aduloju told George who was flanked by his wife Roli and the Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel not to be deceived by the mammoth crowd, because, according to him, many of them came with different intentions: “I have seen people from all walks of life, some are Christians, some are Muslims, some come to felicitate with you, some to see your countenance, whether you are remorseful or not; some coming to listen to me whether I will praise you or not, some here they are just looking for your endorsement so that they will win elections; they are here for different reasons, but you know why you are here, that it is because of God, it is because of his protection and unmerited favour as you called it.
“As from today you have become an ambassador for Christ; you are to represent Christ wherever you find yourself more than ever. In your party, in your home, in your society, everywhere you find yourself, it is what you do now after this thanksgiving that matters, not what you have done before, God is not a God of yesterday, He is a God of now and tomorrow.
“Never again will the name of the Lord be brought to shame through you, you will not disgrace God, God will not disgrace you.
Looking straight into the audience, the priest said, “you politicians must allow him to settle down, let him commune with his God, at over 60 you are not getting younger, you must prepare for heaven everyday as you wake up, that does not mean you are going to die tomorrow.
“To all the politicians, if you will not take anything away from this service, remember that Proverbs 16: 27 says a greedy man brings trouble to his family, but he who hates bribe will live. Greed for money, greed for power, greed for anything will only bring you trouble; greed and selfishness has destroyed our value system, our economy and our nation; it will bring more troubles upon you, please shun corruption, thuggery, greed, selfishness, bribery and all will be well with you.” I have to admit that I was initially angered and perplexed that a church will agree to do thanksgiving for Bode George; however, upon reading this sermon, I will have to say Bravo to the pastor. Politics › Re: Federal University In Ekiti State - Ikole Ekiti As The Right Location by jensinmi(m): 3:37am On Feb 21, 2011 |
hannie: WTF ?
Fayemi rules Ekiti and not PDP . . .
PDP happen to have a senator that represents them but how can a senator be the judge of where a Federal University is to be placed if not TO SPITE THE RULING PARTY IN EKITI STATE ?
I can just imagine GEJ just coming into Lagos to come spew rubbish at Fashola expecting him to be subject to all his whims and caprices ? GOD FORBID!
Go ask OBJ, even Tinubu successfully called his bluff so dont think Fayemi cant call GEJ's bluff Dis Guy: In the nigerian context this make some sense but it's quiet daft for anyone to say opposition senators and Governors should simply back down just because the FG makes a decision. what are they there for then? if the PDP led government withholds allocation to the state will you also say they are free to do whatever they want
The FG already chose a location with the collaboration for the state government and the people, the State government went ahead to pay for surveying and land clearance only for the Fg to start building in another location entirely without consultation
Well i reckon GEJ wont be campaigning in Ekiti any time soon, not in the SW anyway if this sort of rubbish is allowed just because he is the president As daft as it sounds, people are dying and more are getting maimed. Someone has to back down, and we all know the PDP's Federal Government won't. So I wonder who's left on the other side of the equation. Let's see , Maybe Fayemi?? The Federal Government will say they have given Ekiti a University. People elsewhere will ask why "those Ekiti people" are fighting. The solutions I proffer here are those that will save lives. Fayemi can take it or leave it. |

osundefender: I can't help but bring to the notice of my fellow nairalanders of the political situations in osunstate particularly the action congress of nigeria (ACN). one will always wonder why the ACN a party which preaches dignity and transparency in all dealings will chose not to conduct primary elections for political offices but yet order all aspirants to purchase forms of intent (120k for house of assembly aspirants, 300k for house of rep aspirants and 500k for senetorial aspirants) these aspirants also went through stressfull screaning process with the thought that the best candidate will be chosen. Little did they know that this screaning exercise was only for formalty sake because the chief dictator himself who calls himself the executive governor already has his own candidate whom he intends to impose on the good people of osun state against their wishes. the screaning panel submitted the names of the candidates who performed well to the party for adoption but mr dictator changed the list to his own list which was submitted to to INEC. This development was greeted by violent protests by Party members (who have worked, prayed and some even lost their lives during the 2007 elections and subsiquent election tribunals for the victory of Mr Aregbe) both at the governors office in osogbo and the home town of the the national chairman of the party chief bisi Akande (sometimes i wonder if he is still the national chairman) in Ila. These protests were surprisingly ignored by the party, even Newspapers didnt report these protests. It is also known that Mr Aregbeshola has also compilled his list of commissioners with majority in the list being his friends in Lagos state while he was a commissioner. Protests by party faithfuls were also ignored by Mr Dictator.
Mr Aregbeshola, i think you are bitting the fingers that fed you. This people you are ignoring are the same people who ensured your victory at the 2007 polls, stood by you during the election tribunal and ensured your succesful swearing in to office. they have been with the party even when you were still a commissioner in Lagos state. If you still choose to ignore them then you are spelling doom for the party in this forth coming general election. my advice to you is to be more reasonable and stop being a dictator!!! @Poster: God Bless you for standing up for what is right. The bible says you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. We the supporters of the ACN have every reason to be mad that the will of the people is being subverted by Aregbesola, and by Fayemi in Ekiti. Both these governors have imposed their preferred candidates. And I pity the people who come here to tell us that these governors had the right. Do you believe Tinubu, Fayemi, or Aregbesola have the interest of Nigerians at heart, or theirs first and foremost??Fashola is the shining star of ACN. He is nothing like Tinubu, Fayemi, or Aregbesola. As of 1st of February 2011, I refuse to believe in political parties in Nigeria any longer. I will put my hope in individuals of integrity. |

Gov Fayemi needs to know his position. He is an opposition governor. He doesn't get to choose where Federal facilities are cited. The PDP couldn't care less if he wants it in Ilejemeje. They will put it wherever they want. He needs to back down instead of remaining on this issue. Someone said why should Arise be the one to exert authority. Well, I don't know if he is truly responsible, but let us not forget. Ayo Arise is PDP, and the last time I checked, the president and the FEC are all PDP. In simple words, they don't give a hoot what Fayemi thinks. As an opposition Senator or Governor, you need to know your limits and to know your role. @Olumogun and Ileke-Idi Do you proclaimed Ekiti people know Ilejemeje?? |

Ileke-IdI: Amen o!
lol are you an anti-fayemi? I've been part of the Pro-Fayemi crowd for the past 3 years. Shouting their praises up and down. Now they have gained power, and have all started "acting a fool." Fayemi almost single-handedly chose the candidates to represent Ekiti in the upcoming elections. He even told the ACN delegates of Ijero that if they don't support his chosen candidate, they will see no dividends of democracy during his governorship. Will a good leader say things like that. 100 days into his office and I've completely given up hope on Fayemi. I know one thing for sure - FAYEMI IS NO FASHOLA. Fayemi will fail, and the PDP will have the last laugh. And Ekiti people will have no choice but to run to the People Destroying People party for relief. I'm tired just thinking about it jor. Maybe I should go sleep. |

N1billion for Tourism ko, $1 billion for Tourism ni.
Do they think they are talking to Fashola??
Look Gov. Fayemi doesn't care about that one at all. Now that he is finally in the Goverment House. He has to begin paying "taxes" to our Taskmaster in Lagos State. "Olori Oko fe je mbe"
Fayemi is starting to show Ekiti people what he is really made of. They have started sharing the allocation.
No problem sha. Plus PDP, plus ACN. God will deal with all of them. |

dayokanu: Did he get the primaries in CPC which he went to?
How hypocritical of him to complain about lack or primaries in ACN then jump to CPC and pick a ticket without primaries also If a party doesn't have a candidate for a particular zone/ticket, and had already concluded they will not participate for that zone, and then someone pops up to compete under that party, a lot of times, the party goes ahead to give him a ticket. They won't conduct a primary for a ticket that has only one contender. CPC had no plans to field candidates in the election for that position, just like they aren't in most parts of Nigeria where they aren't established. The defection of Lekan provided them an opportunity and so, they went ahead to list him as he was the only contender under CPC. Just like how Dayokanu could have gone to contest for the Ekiti Central Senatorial seat under CPC (who won't be fielding a candidate for that position) or whichever state's seat Dayokanu is from. Automatic Ticket . . . . No contenders. DAYOKANU FOR SENATE!!!!! Mo Loyal sa. I dey loyal sir. I stand well well. |
Politics › After All I Did For ACN, See How They Are Treating Me, Cries Senator Bode Ola by jensinmi(op): 9:37pm On Feb 14, 2011 |
After all I did for ACN, see how they are treating me, cries Senator Bode Ola
A strange name, Senator Kolawole Olagunju, was found in the list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) for election into the Senate for Ekiti Central Senatorial District in the April general election. What is your reaction?
First of all, Senator Kayode Olagunju is not from Ekiti Central Senatorial District and he didn’t contest the election with us. So, he is not going. I think they want to use that as a dummy name pending the time the controversies in Ekiti Central will be resolved. I think you know very well that we didn’t conduct elections in Ekiti Central, at least for the Senate. Section 84 of our party’s constitution says that primaries should be conducted and the winner of that election should be nominated to contest the general election.
In our own case here in Ekiti Central, for one reason or the other, they did not allow the election to hold. We tried our best to appeal to the authorities to allow election to hold to no avail, even a rerun.
But I think a leader somewhere has a preferred candidate and he wants the candidate to come in here. Of course we all know that if we had conducted the election, I would have won the election. But because a leader somewhere has a preferred candidate, they decided that election should not hold. That is just the secret of the whole thing.
Your party seems to accept imposition. But does the constitution of the party accept what is going on?
I’m at a loss. We preach one man one vote and we preach that somebody who wins election should be given the opportunity to contest, but we are doing a different thing from what we preach. ACN is a progressive party, but I think our leaders are just trying to destroy it here in Ekiti State, and that is the most unfortunate thing. It is unexpected. I’ve just spent one and a half year in the Senate, I have done my best for the party; I’ve given my best to the party, and I have stayed by the party. I have supported the party in all ramifications and I am surprised now the way they are treating me. I feel this is happening because there is a leader somewhere who is interested in a particular candidate and he wants to give the position to that candidate. That is why we have this problem now in Ekiti.
Do you see yourself taking a legal action against your party?
I may or may not.
What is your suggestion on how to bring this to an end? Or what is the way forward?
What will save the party is that they should put the right candidate, and that is myself. That is what the people are saying. They are doing all these to frustrate me, but the people in the state are watching them. The people are complaining that what they are doing is not fair; people know that they have maltreated me and to save the party, they should nominate me so that I can go to the election and win the general election for them. I am a winner and anytime any day election is conducted in Ekiti Central, I will win. But now, because of all these things, I regret to announce this, ACN is likely to lose.
Judging by what is happening now in the party, if eventually you are not picked, what do you think this will portend for the party in the state?
It is capital failure. The people are watching them. The people are all saying that these people are heartless, that what they are doing is ungodly. I’ve not done anything to them and I have done my best for the people. Go and take a look at the programmes I have executed for the people these past one and a half year that I have been there. But they just thought that now that we have gotten the governorship, and we are in control, they could just put somebody that they prefer, not somebody that the people want. I think it is unfair.
You were said to have been invited to a meeting with other aspirants when the crisis started and that you left the meeting in annoyance. There are rumours that since then, some people have been threatening your life. How true are these and what actions have you taken?
Everyday I receive threat messages that my life is no longer safe in Ekiti and things like that. I don’t know the reason for that, but I know that no evil can befall me and I put my trust in God and there is no problem. As regards that, I lodged a formal complaint with the Police and I still went to the Commissioner of Police in the state to make a complaint.
On the meeting issue, I was not invited to any meeting really, I just went to the Governor’s office to go and clear some things with His Excellency. But I noticed that His Excellency was not really sincere, he has somebody in mind. He prefers a particular candidate and that is it.
Which Excellency is that?
Excuse me… We have only one Excellency here in Ekiti and that is that.
So, what do you advise?
The party leadership should meet. They have met actually and they have recommended that the person that is doing it should be allowed to continue. More so, he has not committed any offence and he has done his best for the party and that he should be made to continue and that person is Senator Olabode Ola. Now if the party does something that is against that, well we have ourselves to blame, because definitely everybody is looking at us and Ekiti people are not happy about this development. They know that what they are planning now is ungodly, undemocratic and is very bad.
It is rumoured that what counted against you is that you were found to be hobnobbing with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Senate. Can you clarify this?
It is unfortunate if anybody can reason like that. When things were hard, I did not join another party, it is now when the party is in government. It is quite unfortunate if anybody could reason along that line and that is unreasonable and uncalled for. I was the acting chairman of the Senate Committee on Works and I will be highly disappointed in the leadership of the ACN if they could bring that up at all. Does it mean that they don’t want anything good for the members of the party at all?
The chairman of the committee was removed by the law court and I, being the vice chairman, automatically became the acting chairman. I also did my best during that period. Now they have put another person there who is a member of the PDP. In the Senate, you are either a chairman or a vice chairman. New members of the Senate are usually vice chairmen and since the man I was deputising for was removed, I filled the position and the things I did for Ekiti State that time would soon begin to manifest, because the budgetary provisions are still being examined. If that came up at all in the issue of Ekiti Central primaries, they just want to give the dog a bad name so that they can hang it. I have never done anything anti-party. http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&%3Bview=article&%3Bid=75095:after-all-i-did-for-acn-see-how-they-are-treating-me-cries-senator-bode-ola&%3Bcatid=53:interviews&%3BItemid=701 |
