AgricultureRe: Practical Farmers Pls Share Ur Bitter Experience, Let Learn From Your Mistakes. by jethro2: 10:35pm On Jan 06, 2015
Soloxam:
Welcome, I have been waiting to hear from u, I know u are loaded, pls let learn from those sin/error u ave committed. Thanks......... Pls more, more, more, let intending farmers knows that it not bread and akara.....
Lol at waiting for me. Thanks for the vote of confidence. You are not yet a farmer if you have not made bundle of mistakes. The utmost importance is learning from your mistakes. I have committed a lot of errors in the farm one that vividly comes to mind is when a supposed farmer give me the assurance of how i will make N10,000,000 from an hectare of tomatoes. Unbelievable you think.
Hmnnnn. With my careful calculation i cut it down and within me i was targetting atleast N5,000,000.
Lo and behold I plunged in all my resources, all my efforts to meet my desire target. I was always on the phone with her to give me instruction.
The truth dawn on me when i could only realise 10 basket instead of expected 1000 baskets.
The tomatoes hardly survive from the nursery. All my hope were dashed.
But farming is for the passionate. You cant afford to give up.
I traced my step back. Bought the another set of seed, give it to the practising farmers and said try this.
Unbelievably, their tomatoes was bigger and yield more than my farm produce despite that they did not make use of any fertilizer.
What i have learnt
1. Farming is not a get rich quickly profession. You ve got to learn the ropes. Get it right first before plunging in
2. There are lot of factors that one needs to really considered and find a way to work around.
3. practise¡ practise¡¡ practise¡¡¡. Farmer A succeding in year one does not automatically means that farmer B will be.

NOTE
I later found out my so called mentor has been feeding me with informations from the internet.

The farmers tomato did well due to soil factor.
My nursery were affected from too much use of chemicals.

Wooooww.
You are the bomb.
Thanks so much for putting this in writting.
You nail it on the head

it's interesting that we make so many rookie errors in agriculture. I love to see myself as a rookie. some years back when I was running a big poultry farm in my house. it was a farm of very interesting boilers. I wanted to start packaging at 1KG and start distributing to hotels around my area. because I was already supplying them fish at that time. I spent alot of money building pens for them. It's actually a long story, but bottomline was that I ran into crisis, because my cost of production was by far higher than my sale price so I was running on a perpetual loss. I consulted a "professional farmer" on Nairaland. told him my problems and he proffered solutions. Do you know I took his words hook, line and sinker. because of the way he boasted here of the millions he has made from broilers. His "solution" put me into a bigger mess. till today, am still angry about the whole experience. it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
well, as it turns out. the so called professional, had no idea of what he was talking about. am not even sure he knows what a chicken looks like. because the advice he gave me, when I consulted experienced farmers, they said that all the things the guy told me are rubbish. on paper, it looks good. but practically, it's not feasible. that's when I discovered that the young man I have been hailing as a professional is actually an internet farmer, hungry to sell e-book. That's when I discovered that the real farmers don't have time to write e-book, because they are too busy developing virgin lands and breaking new grounds.
same applies, think about it. how many dangote's, adenuga's, bill gates or Carlos slim's of this world have written books on how to be a billionaire or how to run a successful business. None! who writes those books? poor men, who use those books to become billionaires. Look at Robert Kiyosaki (author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad). you'd be surprised that he declared bankruptcy about 3 years ago. but he's the biggest consultant on wealth in the world. How?
Put your mind to reason. if you want to learn about something. go to those who have succeeded in that thing abd observe them. do your own research and you are good to go.

One needs to pay a Visit to the office in Ibadan and register with N1000. You can request for when they will start selling the seed. They deal with Soyabeans, maize and sesame or so. Get in touch if you need a contact no with them

heywhy4u:
I ve been doing some work on this soybean for some time now, but my major problem is market.
Then i ve this question ask, how many ton can one get in one ht?
Buy your seed from National Seed Council and register with them. They will monitor your farm and buy back from you at a very good price
Yield varies depending on farm management, weather conditions, pest and diseases.
Expected yield starts from 1 to 7 tonnes per hectare based on the mentioned factors

Bitos:
Thanks for the extra info. What do you suggest to be done on the bird issue?
Either use scarecrow or you replace the missing ones after germination
AgricultureRe: Soybean Plantation Setup: Critical Things To Consider by jethro2: 1:26pm On Jan 04, 2015
Bitos:
Thinking of settng up a soybean plantation, what are the things i need to consider? Also, anybody knows which location will be best for that?
Soyabean is a leguminous crop which means it can be planted on any land. Every location will be suitable but not waterlogged area.
It fixes back nitrogen into the soil and therefore does not require fertilizer.
Birds love picking it up immediately after planting before germination. You need to fi,d a way to wade them off.

Source for good seed from reputable seed companies. Seed is very important in planting soyabeans.
Its usually planted when the rain is about stopping. Most cases from July.

Lesgupnigeria:
Thanks for your contributions.
I have stated my own condition to forget and move on.
My advise for is for her to do the needful and i will move on,or else i will resume legal action.
Thanks.
I keep saying it and i will keep saying it that i will apologise to you on every thread on nairand if and when you successfully prove to me how profitable cassava planting and selling has been and how you have been raklng in N1,000,000 from 5 hectares like you claimed.
Those things you posted as evidence will can only convince a novice an internet farmer which you know i am not.

That is what you and i perfectly know.

Your grouse is that i said cassava farming is not profitable which i still insist its not.

Cassava is not profitable as you have been enticing people to venture into it.

To deserve the apology, you will have to successfully prove that you have been making millions from cassava planting.
That should not be an issue to you since you have been making the millions from cassava planting and selling.

NOTE
I WILL APOLOGISE ON EVERY THREAD ON NAIRALAND, NOT ONLY ON AGRICULTURE SECTION IF YOU CAN PROVE THE PROFITABILITY OF CASSAVA AS YOU HAVE CLAIMED.
PEACE

fatakeenexport:
Greetings, pls I need some piece of suggestions, never had I farm before ,I like to plant for experiment on a plot and half tow of these three vegetables ugwu, ewdu, and shoko.my question is. Which two of the three is least risky to manage and brings a better ROI with the shortest time framed
Ugwu and ewedu i have planted before. Ewedu was on a commercial scale while ugu was a test running.
My ewedu did not do well despite the fact that i employ a rural farmer that has been successfully planting his own for years.
Factors to consider when planting
1. Type if soil in terms of water retaining capacity, fertility of the soil, pest and disease
2. Sloppiness of the land. You can irrigate a sloppy land successfully. The water will keep draining down instead of sinking in.
There are still a lot of uncontrollable factors that work together.
I am glad you say experiment plot. If you can afford, please plant the three vegetables, give them your best and then you can decide for yourself.
That's the best way to learn and become an expert. And subsequently you can decide on your best crop.
Farm experiences, results and expectation varies from plot to plot. Plot A might bring in 100kg while plot B might produce 2kg despite that they undergo the same treatment.
ROI is not the most important now but getting it right at first.

My God!...can't belief I spent close to two hours reading everything as it happened right from the beginning shocked shocked
But Jethro2 sha undecided
I have to admit at some point I doubted the credibility of LegupNigeria but I'm pleased he cleared himself.
Now back to you, Jethro, a yoruba adage says "ani ki ole sa, o sa...a tun ni ko ju ti owo re le, o ju le...ki la tun fe ki ole she o?"
Meaning:
"We ask the thief to run, he ran...we as him to drop what he stole, he dropped it...what more do u want from the thief"
Ofcourse, LegupNigeria is no thief...I'm just trying to make a point. I'll suggest you, Jethro, tender an apology if not for legal defamation...just for acknowledging that you made a mistake by making a false accusation.
"Admitting your wrong is not a sign of weakness"...just say it for peace sake, that's my take
Believe me i will tender an apology not only on agriculture thread but on all thread on nairaland and even plead with friends and family on nairaland to plead on my behalf if lesgupnigeria could prove with evidence that cassava planting and selling is highly profitable which is the reason he quoted me
proving to me of how he made N1,000,000 from 5 hectares as he has rightly claimed will only be backing up his words.
But I don't think the N16,000 for 42tonnes supplied evidence is anywhere near.
I may be wrong though. This is Nigeria where 22 is greater than 8.
Peace

You smell of so much desperation.
This brings to mind a lesgupnigeria cassava thread where someone point out the fact that two of the foot soldiers got registered on nairaland same day in order to defend their boss.
For that same fact that you register in less than 30 minutes and i am your main target means a lot.
I guess i give up.

This vividly remind me of a thread where someone accused lesgupnigeria foot soldiers and supporters of registering their presence on nairaland the same day in order to defend.
For the facts that this handle was registered today, 9:10pm, less than 30 minutes is more than suspicious.

But i still insist lesgupnigeria is deceiving people about cassava. You have not yet convince me.

You threw a stone at someone without a just cause and you said the person should nt quote you. You should not have thrown d stone in the first place if you dont want him to quote/attack you. Freedom of speech does not mean you should see a mopol/ an army and tell him 'officer you be thief o'.
A leader of her calibre, if you hav personal issues wt ur friend, call him one on one and sort things out. And not coming to the social media to attack his integrity.
For her to say d cassava success story of lesgup is a fabricated story and a scam without a proof. The meaning is that a to z of d whole lesgup story is 100% fake. Hotmass testified that he(lesgup) got d farmland from him. The breaking news now is that lesgup has released a proof that he sold over N1m worth of cassava.
My brother, people are pampering her, seems they are really afraid to scold her of her gross insolence cos of the foul, dirty and abusive utterances she wl dish out at them.

@Jethro, e don doo naa. oo.
Please lets get back to the thread.
Its not about the assisstance but its the facts that I know lesgup has been deceiving with most of his write ups on cassava. He has no contract with any cassava processing factory. Not one in the south west. They are all fabricated calculations. My grouse is he is enticing people into planting cassava without telling them the truth. He is gambling with peoples fund.
I specifically say dont quote me because lesgup has always been quoting me when it comes to cassava stuff. I specifically knew he will quotes me. Thats why I said please dont quote me if you dont have facts and figure.
If he had not quotes me, I will never disprove whatever he said. All I had wanted is to let the Op knows that unless one is processing, cassava is not profitable.
But he wouldnt allow me express myself.
You can deceive everybody all the time.
He is banking on his foot soldiers and his supporters to take it up
Same thing happen on his other cassava thread, I tried to avoid confrontations online so i backed down on a lot of discrepancies in his quotes
I have been expecting just one person on nairaland to have said " I have had transaction with lesgupnigeria and he delivered"
But none whatsoever since the brouhaha has come out to testify to his good work
Instead, some idiots keep vomitting trash.
