If you don't help yourself first, you can't help others. That's what keeps most Nigerian poor. You think you're doing something great whereas you're not even scratching the surface. Let's say the rich guy built one or two boreholes. After three years, the boreholes got spoilt because everyone in the community uses it. Then everyone is back to square one. No one even remembers the gateman anymore.

The point is if you're poor, you can't help anyone. Even if you help, no one will remember you. If the borehole was built, you think they'd commission it in the name of the poor guy or the rich guy ?

The gateman will always remain a gateman even with borehole in the village or house. But the borehole might give him reputational leverage in the community because people know he is a good person. But that won't add money to his pocket. A good, poor man.
