Stormtrooper11: Painfully, yes they do. I say let Macron stupidly say he wants to invade the Nigerian nation-state today, we have a high probability to crumble. The country is internally "divided". Too many people trying to start "something" against the government Many Nigerian youths believe dying for the country is in vain. They'll want to be occupied by France because they'll believe France will give them free citizenship and visa to "japa" to Paris . Our military is overstretched. France will just need to get alotta saboteurs. Start a pincer attack from Benin, Cameroon and Niger. Send the Charles de gaulle to the gulf of guinea. Raid all our Airforce bases with cruise missiles. The initial attacks will come from militants in the Niger delta blowing pipelines and IPOB blowing key bridges over the River Niger. Bandits in the North West would be provided with support to carry guerilla attacks on Abuja. Then the French troops will land to finish the job. Nigeria is so vulnerable to capitulation right now than ever. I never said they couldn't cripple Nigeria however they simply don't have the logistic infrastructure to invade and occupy Nigeria |

kabe1: My brother, wars aren't fought on paper. Forget about these arguments we keep having on pages of Nairaland.
Should the need come up they can allocate required men and material resources. they literally don't have the resources |

kabe1: I disagree with you.
Nigeria, South Africa and other major countries in sub-saharan Africa need to invest in modern military equipment because economic prosperity can be sustained only when there is security guaranteed.
Citing Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, we need to have a military that can act as a deterrent to an aggressor. If an aggressor thinks about the high casualties they are going to sustain, they would be forced to rethink an invasion.
That's what I'm saying.
I'm also saying that compared to South Africa, Nigeria is in a geographically worse position.
The Nigerian army is currently an army designed to fight terrorism and LICW threats. However in the not too distant past we have fought wars against Cameroun and Chad.
Nigeria has to incrementally change it's COIN based military posture.
With the current world population at 7 billion people and growing, the effects of climate change we will see in the future wars fought purely for resource control.
A COIN posture won't help us then. mid to long term Nigeria and South Africa don't face any relevant conventional threat, our militaries should as you said be investing much more heavily wrt modern equipment however our doctrine should still be more focused on irregular warfare since insurgencies, militias, terrorist ect ect are our immediate and foreseeable future threat.... Its illogical to start spending money on threats that don't exist. Purchases such as the JF-17, M-346(if true), Mi35 ect ect serve dual roles and will be equally effective for conventional and irregular threats. |

GreenandGold: Do you know why Julius Malema was kicked out of the ANC after calling Botswana "US puppets"?
It is because as weak as our neighbours are but if a country like Botswana could feel threatened, it would give the US or foreign power the legitimacy for a permanent military base... If you ask any SA military general, they'll tell you that any foreign nation that could stage a war from Botswana could match to Pretoria in a matter of hours, it's the shortest of all the routes to the capital.
So yes, our neighbours are weak but they could be used by a foreign nation in a worst case scenario. only the US, China and Russia have the capability to project power to the extent you are talking about..... And not even if we were at Egypt level in terms of quantity would it stop such a power from invading. |

kabe1: They did not give up their nukes, the weapons belonged to the USSR and Russia had the keys to all nuclear bombs in the USSR, so technically those nukes always belonged to Russia.
This conflict shows that if you don't have the money to spend on your military, align with the closest military power to you.
It was a terrible mistake asking to join NATO, and if the scenario was turned around and the US and Russia were to switch sides, the Americans would do the same thing.
Russian SEAD missions today were incredibly effective though.
I will say South-Africa is at least geographically safe, Nigeria on the other hand is completely surrounded by France on virtually all sides, plus the Nigerian military is a joke.
We might be strong to deal with local African wars, but an invasion like we are seeing in Ukraine by France and we will collapse. France don't have the capability to sustain an invasion of Nigeria........Yes they can seriously hurt you but they ain't invading a country that is as big and economically strong as Nigeria... |

GreenandGold: The lesson is simple; don't weaken you military to gain popularity votes like Ukraine leaders did.
They had 770k soldiers in the 90s, the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal in the world and thousands of tanks.
They gave up the nucles, shrank the military (even though they had a constant threat from Russia) and then allowed their hardware to be outdated. This was all in the name of social and infrastructural programs.
See what they got now? This is the same problem that could happen to my own country as well, too much social and useless infrastructure programs eating up on defence money. Our Neighbours are far to weak!!, a weakening in our military would have a much larger impact on our ability to protect ourselves against irregular foes like Islamic extremist vs any invasion from our neighbours. |

kabe1: From an African, specifically Nigerian perspective, this conflict shows the need to invest properly in modern military equipment.
You might have all the fancy roads, bridges and infrastructure all you like. All it takes for all that infrastructure to come down is a properly timed cruise missile.
Sadly all the countries in sub-saharan Africa have very weak militaries.
MRAPs and Armoured vehicles don't win wars. I disagree....Not the fact that African countries shouldn't invest in modern equipment BUT your notion that Nigeria should invest based on the Ukraine-Russia conflict for fear of "cruise missiles" and/or invasion..........None of Africa's 4 regional powers have the power projection capability to invade the other and only China, USA and Russia have the capability to launch a meaningful and sustained invasion across the ocean..... Nigeria should continue focus on a more COIN based approach to procurement like it has lately hence the success against BH. |

IGpro1:
why should anyone freak out. Rooivalk was supposed to be an African pride, But Denel killed that dream, and your Govt is almost done burying it. It's rugged Somewhat reliable, having not heard of any, crashing in recents times. South Africa is being managed poorly and if something isn't done your defence industry would be just making bullets for your guns.
Though most of your equipment had massive foreign support systems, by now your country should have been 70% self sufficient.
And then the AU would have been a good booster to Denel, like showcasing those weapons during their meetings, rather than then discussing Israel or China. Let me correct you on a few points. 1. South Africa is one of the top arms exporters in the world....Denel is but one company out of hundreds....even without Denel we still in the top 20 easily... So nothing about our actual defence industry is dying. 2. You obviously don't know what OEM means... If you did then you won't be blabbering on about "massive foreign support systems".... The majority of our equipment especially our land forces are 100% South African made..even the likes of the Rooivalk and Oryx are local since Denel is the official OEM for these aircraft meaning every single nut and bolt is locally manufactured. |

It's not even close. the IMF gdp stats for 2021are as follows Pakistan GDP ppp : $137075 million Nigeria GDP ppp: $116255 million World Bank: Pakistan : $1,077,210 million Nigeria : $1,069,189 |
