Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald says he has chronic kidney disease and is due to have a transplant next month.

The 32-year-old Scot has lived with the condition for 12 years but it has deteriorated, and he accepts it may now end his career prematurely.

“Football has been great but this needs to take over,” he told Fulham’s website.

“I want to get it done now, make sure everything is right and come back from it and live a normal life again.”

McDonald, who has been capped five times by Scotland, is hopeful of being able to continue playing professionally after the operation and a three-month recovery period, but while he has been sidelined with the condition this season he has been working with Fulham’s Under-23 and Under-18 sides to develop his coaching skills.

“I’m 32 and I could probably play until I’m 35. The Premier League is probably too fast, but I know where I am in my career,” he said.

“Will I want to play football? Will I be ready physically or mentally or do I go down the coaching route? I won’t know until I get the operation done and see how I will feel.”

McDonald joined Fulham from Wolves in 2016 and has made 128 appearances, but has not figured for the London club this season because of the illness, and has also turned down chances to move on loan.

His operation was due to take place this month but Covid-19 has meant a delay to all transplants. However, he hopes it will happen in April, with his brother and one of his best friends both preparing to donate a kidney.

“I’ve prepared my whole career knowing a transplant was the end goal,” he said. “We wanted it to happen after football, but the way recent test results have gone, it’s going to be quicker than that.

“I could hold on and have dialysis four times a week to finish my career but there comes a point when certain things just have to be done.

“There are so many benefits for me to have a living donor and I owe my life to them.”

The British government has reportedly pledge a £2.8m budget to start the bidding process to host the FIFA world cup in 2030.

confirming government commitment, UK prime minister Boris Johnson disclosed the time is right for Britain and Republic of Ireland to launch a bid to host the 2030 world cup.

France’s former president, Nicolas Sarkozy was on Monday, March 1 sentenced to three years in prison having been found guilty of corruption and influence-peddling.

Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012 was accused of forging a “corruption pact” with his lawyer and a senior magistrate.

Judges said there was “serious evidence” of collaboration between the three men to break the law.

The case dates back to 2014 after investigators from the newly-created Parquet National Financier (National Financial Prosecutor’s Office) tapped Sarkozy and his lawyer, Thierry Herzog’s phones.

This was done as a result of allegations that the former president had illegally received millions of euros from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to fund his successful 2007 presidential campaign.

Phone conversations recorded between Sarkozy and Herzog made investigators suspect the former French leader had offered to use his contacts to get the judge Azibert a coveted position in Monaco, in exchange for information about the investigation into the Bettencourt case.

On January 30, 2014, Herzog told Sarkozy of an exchange he’s had with “Gilbert”, a high magistrate not instructing his case, but who apparently “had access” to confidential documents, according to AFP.

Two days later, Sarkozy demanded his lawyer call him back on a phone line he had under an assumed name, Paul Bismuth, because he suspected his official number was being tapped.

A few days later, Herzog reiterated that Azibert was optimistic about Sarkozy’s prospect over the Bettencourt case.

He mentioned that Azibert was interested in a high-ranking position in Monaco to which Sarkozy replied: “I’ll help him”.

Herzog added that Azibert had told him he did not dare ask for “a helping hand” and that he had replied: “You’re kidding, with what you’re doing…”

Later in the month, as Sarkozy was preparing to travel to Monaco, Herzog reportedly reminded him “to say a word for Gilbert” if possible.

Sarkozy assured him he would “take the necessary steps”, AFP reported.

However, two days later, his official line indicated that the 66-year-old former president did not put in a word and it even bothered Herzog that Sarkozy could ask for something” of the Monegascan Minister of State whom he does not know very well.

Investigators believe the turnaround can be explained by the fact the two men had then just learned their unofficial line was also tapped, though Sarkozy refuted this.

On March 3, during a phone call with Azibert, Herzog said that “the necessary steps were taken in Monaco”. “I’ll tell you in person”, he also said.

“We were forced to say certain things on the phone,” he added, “because we learnt some things.”

However, it’s unlikely the former president will spend a day in jail. The one-year prison sentence can be served with certain conditions, including the wearing of an electronic bracelet, or limited home confinement.

Sarkozy is expected to appeal against the conviction.

His lawyer, Thierry Herzog, and the senior judge, Gilbert Azibert, also denied wrongdoing as both were handed the same sentence as Sarkozy.

Herzog, who was also slammed with a five-year professional ban, has appealed the ruling.

Prosecutors had requested two years of prison and a two-year suspended sentence for all three defendants over what they said was a “corruption pact.”

“No pact has ever existed,” Sarkozy told the court. “Neither in my head nor in reality.” “I want to be cleared of that infamy,” he added.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to inform Nigerians if outlaws have taken over the country.

CAN’s question came as a reaction to the abduction of more than 300 schoolgirls of Government Secondary School in Jangebe, Zamfara State.

Rev. Samson Ayokunle, the Christian body’s President, in a statement, said the recurring kidnapping of students is shocking and must be stopped.

Reverend Ayokunle stated that it is disheartening that bandits could be having a field day in a country where there are equipped security agencies.

“It is totally embarrassing. When will this government give the citizens of Nigeria assurance that their lives and property are safe?

“Mr. President, where shall we go from here? Have the criminals taken over where there is legitimate government?” he said.

The CAN leader said prayers are being offered but faith without hard work from the authorities would be in vain.

Ayokunle advised that all public secondary schools in the North be closed until security is guaranteed. He suggested additional recruitment into the Police.

“We also call for adequate funding, training, equipment for our security forces in order to enhance their performances nationwide.

“It is high time the government declared a state of emergency in the security sector of the country,” he added.

Cattle and Foodstuff dealers under the aegis of the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) have begun a nationwide strike on Thursday, February 25.

The strike was entered into following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the federal government by the group.

Recall that the union had demanded payment of N475 billion compensation for lives of members and properties lost during the #EndSARS protest and Shasa market chaos, and dismantling of all roadblocks on federal highways due to problems its members get subjected to when carrying out their duties

Grand Matron of AUFCDN, Hajia Hauwa Kabir Usman who announced the commencement of the strike asked the police not to disturb the task force of the union who will carry out enforcement of the strike by ensuring that no food and cattle were moved from North to the South.

The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC) has sealed some production factories engaged in packaged water production for falling short of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Executive Secretary of LSWRC, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the level of poor and unwholesome practices discovered in some water factories in the State were not only disheartening but frightening.

She said as the regulatory body empowered by law to enforce standards, the LSWRC would not fold its arms and watch some individuals put the lives of residents in jeopardy on account of economic gains, and that every necessary effort would be mustered to protect the people from consuming unwholesome water.

Mrs. Adepoju said, “Yes, we are not all out to hound businesses. On the contrary, we want water producers to do business and thrive. However, in doing business, safety procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) must be strictly observed”.

Disclosing that enforcement operations were carried out at some water production factories in the State with on-site testing kits, the Executive Secretary said the result confirmed that most of them operated far below safety parameters.

“As the regulatory body empowered by Section 313 (h) of the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law, 2017, to regulate the activities of those engaged in the provision, consumption, treatment, packaging, sales and supply of bottled drinking water contained in bottles or polythene bags, our principal interest is to ensure acceptable standards”, she stated.

While vowing that the enforcement exercise would be intensified and sustained, Adepoju noted that the Commission is working with relevant stakeholders such as the Association of Water Producers (ATWAP) and Water Producers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), among others, to enforce standards.

She said the sealed facilities would remain shut until the owners of such factories strictly comply with all safety procedures and duly register for further monitoring in order to facilitate compliance with best practices in future.

A Twitter user identified as @harrisonmbamara has shared a video that captured moment some Nigeria police officers flogged an Aba residents with a Machete.

In the video, four police officers were seen forcing an unknown man and woman to do frog jump in a quiet street. All of a sudden, the man was forced to lie on the road as the police officers used machete on him.

It is unclear why the two were being punished but from the voices from the clip, the officers were heard shouting at their victims who appeared helpless.

Reacting to this, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, John Kalu condemned the video saying, “While we sympathize with the Police over the cowardly attack by yet to be identified hoodlums, we will not tolerate acts of brutality against innocent Abians and residents.

“The state government will investigate the authenticity of the video with a view to punishing whoever is found to have unleashed brutality on innocent citizens.

“We call on the police not to succumb to the temptation to engage in knee jerk response but to painstakingly identify the culprits and bring them to justice,” Mr Kalu told Premium Times, Tuesday.

Golf legend Tiger Woods is in hospital after being involved in a car crash. Reports suggest the American was injured in a major incident where he had to be “extricated from the wreck”. The incident took place near Los Angeles.

The crash took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning (Feb 23) where paramedics and emergency services were called to the scene

Argentine football great and World Cup winner Leopoldo Luque has died at the age of 71

Leopoldo Luque, the mustache-sporting striker who was a key part of the Argentina side that won their first World Cup at home in 1978, died on Monday, the Argentine Football Association said.

Luque, who was 71, was hospitalized with COVID-19 over the festive period and he never fully recovered, Argentina media reported.

Luque was an integral member of the 1978 team, scoring four goals and forming part of a swashbuckling attack with Daniel Bertoni and Mario Kempes.

Prominent Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi has disclosed that bandits are gathering money to acquire anti-aircraft missiles to repel attacks from security forces.

The Islamic scholar who recently met with some of the bandits in a forest in Zamfara state, revealed this in an interview with Punch.

Gumi who had also pleaded with the federal government to forgive and compensate the bandits who had lost all their possessions to cattle rustling and extortion, added that it is already developing into a full-blown insurgency and should be stopped immediately.

He said, “These people were the first victims of cattle rustling, who lost all their cattle to rustlers because then, the rustlers were having the guns. Then when they lost their cattle, they joined (the rustlers) and they started to kidnap people. In fact, most of the kidnappings, they (the bandits) are doing it to acquire weapons. They are now trying to buy missiles, anti-aircraft missiles. This is already developing into a full-blown insurgency and we should stop that.

“Like I said, they are collecting ransoms to buy weapons. They want their cows, not money. They are doing that (kidnapping) to raise money just to buy weapons to repel helicopters and airplanes and to attack anybody that is going to attack them. You have to understand the psychology of these people.

“When you offer them amnesty, they drop their weapons. Then you go in, build schools for them, build hospitals for them, get them censored; get them registered; then you can control (them).

“You can’t have access to them through the gun. Honestly, they know the terrain in the bush more than our military. So, it is better to negotiate with them.”

The cleric said the bandits have informants in the armed forces who provide them with information.

“They have collaborators everywhere – in the armed forces, everywhere. One of them said, ‘Even this cattle rustling, we don’t have trailers to transport cattle to where they are slaughtered. We don’t have an abattoir.’ So, there are people who are (collaborating with them). Even the kidnapping of the people, they said, ‘We don’t know these people; it is the people in town that will tell us a certain person has money.”

Senator Dino Melaye has asked the government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to restore the economic situation of the country to where it was before he emerged as the president.

Dino made this known in a video currently making rounds on social media, where he mentioned that the incumbent government has recurrently failed the nation.

He noted in one part of the video that the country should conduct a day of Nation prayers to curb the error of the current administration and the impending doom that may happen.
