Rohr would have been clueless on how to neutralize Salah
Mujtahida: Rohr would have defeated Egypt? Man would have capitulated from the beginning by telling the whole world that we don't have any star player in the mould of Salah. In fact, he even made that statement just before our first match against Egypt. Egypt would have been all over us like ants.
I don't think we played beautiful football. I just like the seriousness in our approach, the pressing, and us playing with full intensity from start to finish regardless of whether we were in the lead. It's that mentality I still admire.
Mujtahida: My bro, hear talk. I'm surprised at the narrative here.
Abeg tell me, did we play beautiful football? The quality of football at this present afcon was so poor especially the opening games such that when Nigeria played, we played with energy and co-ordination and people were impressed. Tell me, what extraordinary thing did our players do that one can say they played beautiful football and that was what made them lose?
Wingers who couldn't cross, is that beautiful football? GK who could not command his line and be alert, was that beautiful football?
We lost and all of a sudden, there's a bawling condemnation of beautiful football. So is this real criticism or the fluff of painment?
Bottom line for me in all these talk, is that don't lose. A wise man is regarded as a fool if he loses.
Oya Charles we dey wait.. abi is it a crime to get all max points at the group stage?
Mujtahida: This is sophistry not real argument. Did we lose because we played "fancy football"? What was beautiful about the way we played? Was that beautiful football? Was the match against Tunisia beautiful football in your eyes?
I blame am in some ways, but at the same time stuffs like this can happen to very good keepers, if we had equalized and carried the day maybe he would have made up for it at some point and it will all be forgotten.
Mujtahida: It is not our defeat that hurts. It's the manner of the defeat. First shot at Okoye in 4 games. Fiam, e don enter net.
Under Rohr we would have lost to Egypt in the opening game.. Struggled against Sudan and maybe lost to Guinea-Bissau.
We would have held hands with Ghana bowing out at the same time.. to meet again in the double header
Danielnino00: Rohr that lost at home to CAR and struggled against Cape Verde and Liberia would have beaten Tunisia and Burkina Faso? Lol.. You didn't get the memo.. Rohr team was on a decline..The man was losing it!
I and a couple other monikers here talked about us not being distracted by that news from the Tunisia camp. Also, you should always monitor your opposition regardless of the circumstances. All that being said, I do not think we did not come into that game seriously. There should have been a switch in style noticing that the Tunisians were bent on neutralizing that in the wing. We had something in store in the second half but for two quick unfortunate circumstances. Not to mention not converting our several half chances We would have carried that day but it was not meant to be.
tglobal: Interesting perspective on Rohr's salary, opposition scouting and Ekong's contribution in the Tunisia match
You clearly didn't read reports that Eguavoen will wear both hats. Well let's wait and see how it all plays out.
lovewins: Not quite. If the Eguavon is appointed coach it's going to be substantiative. He'll have to leave his role as technical director to manage the team while a new TD will be appointed. Don't forget his intervention during AFCON was interim.
If you want to bring a foreign coach he needs to be qualified to coach his own country. No more anyhow coach because of skin color. We can do far better than that.
It was a wonderful thing to behold when Amuneke visited Eguavoen and the team prior to the AFCON. Already shows both men will have a good working relationship.
Amuneke will be very willing, and as a successor as well. Eguavoen still has the technical director job. Don't forget that.
mostob: sir, do you think Amunike will be willing to take the assistant coach role? And will it not be a case of two drivers in a boat regarding their varying football philosophy?
TheGoodJoe: Eguavoen, Amuneke to takeover Super Eagles Eguavoen gets two-year contract • Salary to be increased from N3m • NFF discards Peseiro By Emma Jemegah The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has finally settled for its Technical Director, Austin Eguavoen, as the substantive coach of the Super Eagles with former international, Emmanuel Amuneke, as his assistant.
Daily Sunsports exclusively gathered that the choice of both Eguavoen and Amuneke was arrived at a meeting between the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare and officials of the NFF, yesterday, in Abuja.
According to our impeccable source, the Minister nullified the planned appointment of Portuguese Jose Peseiro and ordered the immediate draft of Eguavoen and Amuneke to the Super Eagles.
Also, the meeting agreed to give Eguavoen a two-year contract with an improvement on his salary from the present N3 million, although the source did not disclose the new salary.
The development comes after Eguavoen’s ‘impressive’ performance at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where he led the Super Eagles to hundred percent performance in the group stage before crashing out in the round of 16 to Tunisia.
Already, the Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA), through its president, Isah Ladan Bosso, had queried the appointment of a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles, stating that no foreign coach had ever won a World Cup in the history of the competition.
Bosso said with equal welfare and a good atmosphere, the Nigerian coaches can do better than their foreign counterparts because they understand the playing culture of Nigeria.
Also, scores of Nigerians, including renowned coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, had called for the retention of Eguavoen as the Super Eagles technical adviser.
Chief Onigbinde argued that if Eguavoen, with just about a month to the start of the AFCON, could come up with the performance in Cameroon, he should be encouraged to continue with the team.
There were several questionable selections on that AFCON list. But overall, I think most of the players deserved to be in the squad considering circumstances like the unavailability of some players.
My view is that every player showing outstanding performance in club and league should be invited to camp and the coaches carry out assessment and selection.
The very big question, However, can our indeginous coaches be free from vested interests , Favouritism and outright corruption. This is the big question ❓
The other problem is that outstanding performance and quality in club and league are not the pivotal and only overriding consideration.
I have been accused with the tag of promoting as some have termed it borough and init boys . The abuse and denigration of my view are well documented here. Claims of they are in low level leagues the English Championship, not good enough, not done anything, etc.
But look at our AFCON team selection, and you see blatant hypocrisy, bigotry and double standard.
but we are thinking on similar lines. The one thing I would like to add is if you rely only on your strengths as a team, that is playing arrogance. That strategy cannot win tournaments. You must have the right mix when deciding how to approach again -- that is studying the opponents thoroughly as well
fabyom: All the great sides utilize wing play. It's normal in football. It's not as if the 94 team invented it. Counter attacking football has bested the best of teams and managers. Without the red card and lack of quality upfront we would have won. Now Oshimen and Dennis will be back why hire a man selling groceries in Portugal for the past 2 years when you have a man that understands the game.
We lost that game because Tunisia resorted to capitalizing on only where they saw a gap. Our defenders were on task but they were not playing compact. So the coach instructed to shoot wherever there is a gap. Unfortunately we had a keeper not tested enough to be ready for that surprise. The Tunisian's were LUCKY because as soon as they switched to that tactics, it payed off immediately. We were a goal down before we could respond to a switch in their play. On the hand what Eguavoen had in the store for them would have worked but for the unfortunate incident of Iwobi. Overall, I would say that we missed our most lethal strikers. Osimhen would have proved a great threat from the middle considering his work rate. It would have been hard for any team to handle his threat as well as what Simon brings from the wings. What SE needs now is dynamism. If we can bring that to full force we are good to go even to the WC. Like I said before I like Eguavoen's pressing phylosophy, bring on Amuneke to give you the needed mix. You must also study your opponent and not rely solely on your pattern of play.
Mujtahida: I'm only thinking that would Eguavoen stagnate like Rohr if he's given 5 years on the job?
I feel two years should be given to him. Eguavoen's error is that he wants the team to play like the 94 team. Shows his thinking is stuck in the past. Yes our strength has always been the wings but I remember saying that we should develop other strengths so that we don't become a one pony trick team.
You can say that about any team as a matter of fact. Even if C.A.R dey play Germany
Joezinho: This is exactly the same way most of us saw the game with the Tunisians and they beat us. Football isn't mathematics bros. If football is how you see it then I don't think the Egyptians would be in the QFs right now.
This tunisia game still hurts. Maybe our failure to qualify for WC 2006 and ANC 2015 are worse, but this is the worst failure in a tournament proper...
Our defense is fine.. better than when Rohr was in charge. Better at dealing with dead balls. The only lapses we have noticed so far is not allowing the opponents space to shoot. As regards communication with the GK, we should sort that out.
I wonder whether they will be on drugs.. It's not just that they ended up last in their group, but I am looking at how they played throughout the tourney.
Papi85: many mouth go open that day but I pray it doesn’t happen
9ja will qualify but I warn we don’t take them for granted, also eguavoen should dump that is 442 formation for 433 instead. We are in 2022 not 94
I predict the black stars to be physical and full of running in the encounter so a midfield trio of ndidi dm,Onyeka cm/b2b then aribo as AM
Any that wins the midfield battle between both teams will win the game
Oh so Ghanians don't have a thread dedicated to the Black Stars. okay, next
PetroDolla2020: Link to what? God forbid. Boast? We Ghanaians don’t boast Boasting is for Nigerians. Ghanaians prefer to do the do, than talk I will never boast because it is not in my nature to boast. boast about what? I also don’t like people who boast
But why are you bothered what is going on, in this thread. Let me come to your thread to see if Ghanians are not boasting . Please give me the keys.. I am still waiting.
PetroDolla2020: There is no need for anyone to boast about who will beat who. The field will decide. All the talk is crap. Talking, boasting, will not change how the game will be played on the pitch. I think folks can use their time better than engage in needless banters about things they have no control over?
