Alaba’ case is not isolated. We’ve had other cases of victims who have said they didn’t get a chance at all or at least a fair chance because of where they came from. safarigirl: There were victims, who mentioned that they spent their own personal money. It was not "Someone said he spent" it was "I spent....."

Why don’t we apply the same term, ”asslickers” when it’s other players not deserving of the attention some of us give attention here?. That terminology has prejudice written all over it. andrewbaba44: He prefers playing there than Nigeria ,I said it before he excused him self for invitation because he prefers England U21 but yet some asslickers here will keep on ranting |

The reports have always been there. But she is asking for proof that it’s true or proof that Alaba affirms it. edi287: BAYERN Munich youngster, David Alaba, says he should have been playing representative football for Nigeria but was denied by stringent eligibility rule by football officials in the country.
Alaba, whose father is Nigerian and of Filipino mother, plays for Austrian national team but only after he has been turned down by Nigeria. The defender said he actually planned to join Nigeria's cadet team which won the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championship at South Korea but words reached him of his ineligibilty.
''I wanted to play for Nigeria but I must confess that there was no formal approach for me. A scout actually discussed that with me. I was excited because of my dad, he was a fan of Sunday Oliseh when Oliseh played for FC Koln. As a kid, I loved to watch Victor Agali in the jersey of Hansa Rostock,'' he told an Austrian news medium.
However, Alaba was shocked when told by the scout that Nigeria had plans mainly for its home-grown talents. '' I got the information that Nigeria will only consider those who were in the country perhaps because of travelling logistics and that is the end of that."

Koboko99: God bless you for this sir.
County of birth should not be a barrier to playing for Nigeria. We need the best crop of players in our youth teams. CATCH THEM YOUNG!!!
Some of these players we are courting and trying and trying now should have been capped at U17 and U21 levels.
Some of the players that were denied in the last U17 and U21 world cups because we are trying to help our home grown talents will end up with good clubs a few years from now. Then, we'll start sending delegates to beg them. Let's get them in early.
Most countries at the U17 world cup have a better system and better facilities than Nigeria, yet they still had foreign based players in their squad. We are here fumbling and forming nonsense pride.
The Nigerian national teams should be open to every Nigerian all over the world irrespective of their country of birth. |

At least we have all relied on that report for long. Until Alaba denies it, it stands. Because that sentiment lies with some of us Nigerians. That's something I cannot take away from our coaches. Unless you are now asking me for proof safarigirl: Okay, but did he affirm it? Because as you talk "I remember when..." E be like say you been dey there when e happen
He never mentioned anything on why the coaches dropped him, so, are you applying the rule of deduction? |

Na wa o. Player comparison and preferences is something displayed by many here. The bad blood talk weak me. kellycute: we know what u are doing. If you ain't hyping your borough Carpenters, u will resort to hyping some of our home-grown players against each other just to cause unnecessary bad blood. I remember exactly how we lost Alaba cuzof those who said U17 should be for local lads alone. That thing still dey pain me till this day tbaba1234: Choose your best players home and abroad. If we can get top European prospects of Nigerian origin to pay for us as youths, we can boost their careers and there is a good chance that they will play for us in the future if they reach their potential
Our goal should be creating the best national team players in the future. Open the floor and let the players compete. Then, make your selection fairly and without bias. That way, we lay a good foundation for the future.
The best local lads will make it and so will the best foreign lads.
You boost your odds for future talents. There should be no room for sentiments. |

If our grassroots football was really developed, yes it’s true some of the players we hail now will have faced stiffer competition even in the home front and we would have been better for it. Look at the big picture. We can only make progress if we do the right things, not being sentimental. Our national teams should not be a social welfare program. TheGoodJoe: I do not also believe in the true Nigerian talk but I will maintain my stance that the U17 should be reserved for Grassroot development. It should be prioritised because over time it has unearth gems that went on to make the country proud.
Tammy Abraham, Tomori, Solanke and a host of others broke into quality European clubs without the help of the Nigerian youth team.
However, there is a big chance, Nacho, Ndidi Success, Orji Okonkwo, Osimhen and a host of others will be nowhere if not the youth team.
So I wonder the crave for the foreign bred Nigerians to play in the u17 to deny home based players that need it more than them.
If we are to use home bred/based players, the screening model must be improved upon to become more comprehensive to harness a high breed of special players to complement the foreign bred Nigerians. |
