Well done Hughton – This 29-year-old addition could truly solidify Brighton’s backline

by Rohan Sengupta

https://soccersouls.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Leon-Balogun-1.jpg

According to reports, Brighton and Hove Albion have completed the signing of Nigeria international defender Leon Balogun on a free transfer.

Balogun, 29, left Bundesliga side Mainz at the end of the season and has signed a two-year deal with Chris Hughton’s side.

Brighton finished 15th in the league this season after winning promotion from the Championship. Hughton made some shrewd signings last summer, most notably Pascal Gross from Ingolstadt and the club did a good job to stay in the top-flight.

Gross scored 7 goals and provided 8 assists in the league and was named the club’s Player of the Season. Going by Gross’ telling impact in his debut season in England, a lot could be expected from former Mainz defender Leon Balogun as well.

Balogun has represented Nigeria 14 times and was named in manager Gernot Rohr’s provisional 30-man squad for next month’s World Cup. The Berlin-born defender has plenty of experience in the Bundesliga, having also represented Hannover and Werder Bremen among other clubs.

To start with, Balogun is a ball-playing centre-back and with his range of style and good positional sense, he would massively strengthen Brighton’s defence.

Although he is comfortable on the ball, the 29-year-old likes to keep things simple with tidy and crisp short passing. Balogun often acted as the player to build up attacks from the back at Mainz.

A rock at the back for Mainz, Balogun had established himself as one of the reliable centre-backs in the Bundesliga. In a couple of years, he has developed into Nigeria’s best centre-back. At 29, he still has a lot to give to Brighton.

Having spent a lot of time in the Bundesliga, the experience Balogun would bring to the Seagulls side should be measured in gold.

Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy established a formidable centre-back pairing for Brighton in the recently concluded season.

The way Dunk and Duffy worked in defence proved difficult for some teams to breach. Arsenal and Manchester United were a couple of teams to come back home without a single point from their visit to Brighton.

This speaks volumes about Brighton’s defensive shape and rigidity under Hughton. He has built an excellent Brighton team, keeping the defence as his cornerstone. While his midfield and attack have been good, the way the Seagulls have shown defensive resoluteness the entire season is commendable.

With a good defence already in place, Balogun would add more depth and solidity to it. The 29-year-old is playing at the peak of his powers and without any doubt, Balogun is an excellent signing for Brighton.

Don't worry.. Rohr had said Victor Moses is our joker, and that can mean a couple things.. Of course, he can start from the bench. But he would definitely be in Russia.

sontoly:
If am rohr mosses will be starting from bench cos he will break the team spirit, it was obvious that the game against Poland he was playing a one man game, we should all say the truth here.

Thank you so much for this!!!

safarigirl:
Oh God! How are you guys failing this hard to decode someone's meaning?

See you, now, you just ranted for nothing. Joebie did not mean that comment in a tribal way. He meant it in the sense that Omanbala is acting FAMILIAR towards C Nwakali, and that familiarity could mean that his praises for Nwakali might not be coming from a pure place. That was why he used Komekn and Tammy (Tega) Abraham, as an example.

Una no go ask pesin to clarify, he was even teasing Omanbala, no be say he carry am for head like you.

The bolded is highly unnecessary and unfounded. Sheesh!

oga do we need 50 cameras to make K.Nwakali's goals sexy? There were goals like that again and again.. even exotic freekicks that even your phone's video cam will make super sexy.

BascoVanVeli:
You are wrong. We have great goals scored in the NPFL but we don't have 50 cameras that will make them sexy enough.

Eagles Training: Simon Suffers Thigh Injury, GK Uzoho The Chosen One, Balogun & Ekong Partnership

Published: May 24, 2018

https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/14085MosesSimon1.jpg

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Gent winger Moses Simon was unable to complete his first training session with the Super Eagles on Thursday morning after suffering what appears to be a thigh injury.

The winger had to be replaced by Leicester City striker Ahmed Musa for the remainder of the practice game.

The Super Eagles medical team had to wrap an ice pack to Simon's injured thigh and he looked okay after the treatment.

If today's training session is anything to go by, three players on the 30-man preliminary roster have their starting spots in Russia confirmed.

Deportivo de La Coruña starlet Francis Uzoho might be the chosen one in goal as he stayed behind after the practice game to get extra training drills from the goalkeeper coaches on how to goal-kick.

Gernot Rohr and his lieutenants did a lot of talking to William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun to help improve their communication in defense so that the unit can function well.

The two central defenders who were first choice during the World Cup qualifiers performed admirably in the workout.

How Super Eagles Lined Up In Training Session – Crotone Simy Scores Spectacular Goal
May 24, 2018013

Ahead of their upcoming friendly game against Congo DR in Port Hacourt, the senior national team of Nigeria had their second training session witnessed by Owngoalnigeria.com.

As usual the team were shared into two different teams by coach of the team Gernot Rohr after the traditional warming up, light exercises and shooting drills.

Rohr lined the team up in a way which suggest he is already building the team for the Congo DR friendly as most of the regular players were lined up in one team, while the rest who are trying to win a spot were lined up in a separate team.

The highlight of the one hour training session game saw newly invited Crotone forward Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo open scoring in a spectacular fashion with a lob over the head of goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

Ndidi Still Undergoing Special Training, Brighton Newbie Balogun & Joel Obi Looking Sharp
Published: May 24, 2018

https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/2164Eagles31.jpg

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi is on the road to full recovery and is expected to resume full training with the national team in the coming days.

The defensive midfielder jogged with the Super Eagles players at the start of Thursday morning's training session at
Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Ndidi was with the team for about ten minutes before he went on special training, he did some stretching exercises and ran on the sidelines but did not take part in the eleven-a-side practice game.

There are no more question marks surrounding the fitness of Torino midfielder Joel Obi and Brighton & Hove newbie Leon Balogun as both players participated in full training and looked sharp.

Leicester City striker Ahmed Musa and Bursaspor defender Abdullahi Shehu who reported for international duty on Wednesday have not been named in the stating line-up for the ongoing practice game.

Whilst Dele Ajiboye and Daniel Akpeyi were training with the goalkeeper coaches, Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa were in goal for the practice match.

kai.. take it easy na...

some section of us here think the club or league a player plays for automatically determines who they are better or worse than.. for me, it's not absolute. K. Nwakali showed us he is a special talent. Even Ejaria could not have pulled that against Atleti two days ago.

TheSuperNerd:
Your bullcrap talk on K.Nwakali stinks. Discuss something else mister. You are clueless on this one.

First of all, he is 19. Second of all, he is a midfielder... not a forward player. Plays AM and CM.

And you can keep harping rubbish about him using the team to bolster his career. Did he invite himself? You really are giving this little kid a lot of credit... you think he is that influential to force himself on the coaching crew? You really talk bollocks for one who claims to know so much. Mister... take a bloody hike!

Your pessimism and half-truths syndrome is stinking up the whole place. Rubbish.
