ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by joftech(m): 9:23pm On Jul 28, 2005
Windows executables don't run on Linux and vice versa.
@shockreaction i think you are wrong there. You can run Linux codes in Windows by using cygwin and you can use Wine to run Windows codes in Linux.

Hum, well said, but still what would happen to guys like me who are just after the "Kpali"?? I wonder. rolleyes
@kazey, well kpali is good when you know what that kpali certifies.
EducationRe: Nigerian Graduates Unfit for Employment? by joftech(m): 8:13pm On Jul 28, 2005
@kazey, i hope you should be able to see what am talking about now.

The issue is not about govt. now funding these universities, it's about peoples mentality about education, youngsters here think education is all about certificate. They believe a certifcate is their passport to a good job, now the table has turned, the jobs are no longer there.

Until we can all come to thinking about what we need and not what we want the whole thing will countinue to get worse.

My believe is this, education is not about certificate, it's about what you know.

The current FRCN director said one thing which is very interesting to me, he said that since his father can't afford to send him to school, he said he asked himself one day that which school did the first educated man go to? None was the answer. He said since that day he decided to study on his own, he made good grades in his external exam and today he has succeeded in resurrecting the moribund Radio Nigeria.

Nigerian students need a general overhaul in their perspective about what education is, education is not about the "paper"(certificate).

A B.sc also has societal value. DON'T MISS OUT
@kodewrita, yeah what you said is good. But as for me i don't pray for a university degree from any Nigerian school. My aim in life is to get one from the big names (Stanford, MIT, LSE, UCLA), no matter how long it will take i will wait, instead of wasting some valueable years learning nothing.

PoliticsRe: Separation of Religion and Government by joftech(m): 3:28pm On Jul 28, 2005
Am 100% in support of separation of religion and state. Most of the so called men of God are the major problem of this country.

Most politician rely on the gullibility of the masses in order to perpetrate their nefarious activities.

What do you expect when a governor is giving millions of state money to build a mosque and giving nothing to build churches or shrines. Since what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, why the discrimination, or what do you think will be going on in the mind of those that are not getting these largese from the govt. of the day.

Japan, China and most European countries have done away with the cohabitation of religion and state and they are reaping the benefits.

It's high time Nigeria follow suite.

Have anyone think about those quranic/arabic verses on the national currency and the logo of the Nigerian Army, what are they doing there. I think the meaning ought to have been translated to English which is our official language, that is a classical example of segregation and descrimnation since i as a person and millions of others don't know the meaning of what's written on what we are toiling for, day and night.

Nigeria need a serious rebirth, even if it's going to be through caesarian  section.
PoliticsRe: NEPA now PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria) by joftech(m): 3:11pm On Jul 28, 2005
We must all expect the same reform that happened in the telecom sector in the power sector too. At least we all can see what privatization of GSM has done to the country, am quite optimistic that the power sector won't be different too.
ComputersRe: Removing VBS Redlof and Trojan.Startpage by joftech(m): 2:29pm On Jul 28, 2005
Redlof na stupid virus.

it's replicate itself in almost all the folders in the infected PC and this makes opening of folders slow down a lil bit, it was written in VBScript and some part of the code refer to Microsoft, i think this was a plot to make it seems like a legitimate file from MS.

The virus has these files folder.htt and desktop.ini.

The only way i manage to eradicate it from my network was by using Antivir. You can download it from www.free-av.com, it's free.

Then update it, if you don't it will not detect redlof. Once you are through with scanning a system you must do the same for all the systems in your network if you have one, am sure other systems will be infected too.
PoliticsRe: NEPA now PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria) by joftech(m): 10:27am On Jul 28, 2005
This morning i received this offline from a friend.

Don't be deceived by OBJ's changing of NEPA- National Electric Power Authority(NEVER EXPECT POWER ALWAYS) name to (PHCN) Power Holding Company of Nigeria and go & sell ur gen. if u av one.Infact it is noting but a hoarse, a camouflage and ordinary change of nomencleature to deceive d easy trusting Nigerians. D true meaning of d new acronym by a reliable source in d power sector is (PROBLEM HAS CHANGED NAME).So be Aware.

Do you think the above statement is correct or not, share your opinion fast.

Foreign AffairsRe: George Bush and His War on Iraq by joftech(m): 12:11am On Jul 28, 2005
The war in Iraq is just too messy for the US. I hope this does not become another Vietnam for them, because the insurgents in Iraq are doing just what the commies did to frustrate the US from Vietnam.

I don't really think the best way to eradicate terrorism is war, but how do you pacify someone whose mission in life is to self-destruct.

I pray that all these terrorism does not start the 3rd World War, since this was how the 1st World War started.

We all need to be on our knees, this is not just the time to be trading blames.
PoliticsRe: Permanent Seat on UN Security Council for Nigeria? by joftech(m): 11:34pm On Jul 27, 2005
We deserve it and we will get it. All those runaway wey dey throw stone to their fatherland are bastards.

I did not pity them, they ran away because they think things will never get better, but they are fools the glory of Naija will shine, because the Bible even said it and i quote "Greater will the glory of this later house become than [that of] the former" am sorry for you all runaway. Have you ever think about it that you don't have any chance of getting any tangible political office overthere. Wetin you go dey do na boi boi, pity on you.

The following are some of the reasons why Nigeria will eventually clinch this seat.

South Africa has started talking about Land redistribution, i can see a new Mugabe in disguise, and i trust all those oyinbos will never forgive them if they get to kick them out, and hunger sef go show them pepper.

Eygpt sef no fit put mouth when you consider all these terror issue.

If you don't know how world politics work, just keep shut and stop spoiling Naija for us. Tiwa n' tiwa.
WebmastersRe: Cost of Designing & Hosting a Web Portal by joftech(m): 10:34pm On Jul 27, 2005
Can someone tell me the reason why most "Design in Nigeria" websites always look alike.

Mostly they look so unprofessional. But this http://www.tinapa.com seems to be OK to me but i don't know if it's design in Nigeria.

I think it's time Nigerian webmasters know that it's better not to have any graphics than to have badly designed graphics that are also bandwidth hog.
ComputersRe: Email Virus Alert(s) by joftech(op): 8:46pm On Jul 27, 2005
Hmm... I wonder how your customers would feel seeing that they cannot download executables!
@timba, i have a policy of not allowing the downloading of the following file (exe, dll, zip, mp3, iso etc) to just anyone, apart from the fact about viruses the are bandwidth hog. If they want to download them they notify me and i allow them to do that once they are through i put on the lock again.

I sounds crazy to be formating system everyday. Viruses can wreck havoc on your network if you are not careful. I hope you also know that these viruses can turn your pcs into spambox.

So it's just better to protect yourself than stressing yourself.
ComputersRe: Fiber Optics or VSAT, which way to go? by joftech(op): 8:05pm On Jul 27, 2005
Timba, what am really talking about is the issue of getting fibre to various homes in Nigeria. I hope you know what has been happening to NITEL infrastructure (vandalised cables and bad cable layout) if you now put fibre in the mix i wonder what will be happening to your connection on a daily basis.
ComputersRe: Email Virus Alert(s) by joftech(op): 4:31pm On Jul 27, 2005
Chances are that the kind of people who use Linux don't have much money for a hacker to steal.
@seun am quite surprised to hear that statement from you. do you think hackers are yahoo boyz; the motivation behind virus coding is not normally for the financial gain, you can hack just for the fun of it, it's only until recently that some organized criminals have started to give incentives to blackhats to hack systems.

And basically there are 3 type of hackers, Whitehats, grayhat and the most dreaded blackhat. All network security experts are expected to be whitehats but some get their blood poisoned.

Mostly virus writers are teenagers that just want to get a kick for doing what they did. Just like that slammer coder.

Anyway Linux users are billionaire, even Microsoft used to use Linux for their websites too, thanks to Akamai.

WebmastersRe: Web designer newbie: Help critique this site by joftech(m): 10:09pm On Jul 26, 2005
smartsoft, i don't really think you need any specific monitor size type for web development, what's important most is your screen resolution.

Take a look at the nonsense those guys that design www.waeconline.org.ng did. Best screen resolution is 800x600, me think.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Chatting on Nairaland? by joftech(m): 9:10pm On Jul 26, 2005
Hardly do you find a chat room where serious discussions are going on, because those who have knowledge in various domains are too busy to spend their time on chat rooms waiting for someone to ask a question!
@seun if you are talking about the revenue aspect of chatting on Nairaland, there are so many possiblities, only that you have to think about it. The only reason that i know is that it may be a lil be difficult on the tech side, I wonder if you know how much Yahoo is making from their chat service.

It would have been a great thing to have a chat room here. And i don't agree with you about the issue of knowledgeable not chatting. Take a look at the Computer chat room on Yahoo.

Anyway, chatting on Nairaland can never be compared to Yahoo or others, but if only people can come together to cook up IM clients/server for Nairaland it would have been a great idea, but that is just not possible at this juncture.

CareerRe: Unemployment and the Population of Nigeria by joftech(m): 8:44pm On Jul 26, 2005
@Bioye, is like you don't know the meaning of poverty, no pun intended.  The problem of poverty in Nigeria has to do with unemployment and underemployment. 80% of Nigerian graduates are working in a field that is not related to what they study at school. This is a classic example of underemployment, and what happen when this happen, you have people doing things the wrong way simply because they are not qualify to do what they are doing.

Another problem with Nigeria is that we have a high number of working poor.  Until the following (unemployment, underemployment and the working poor syndrome) are abolished or brought under control there will continue to be poverty in the land. Poverty does not arise by itself; it’s those things that give birth to poverty. I wonder when you talk that there is no food, I wonder when Nigeria become another Niger, there is abundant food supply in Nigeria, the problem is that people are not empowered to be able to afford them; Simple.

Take away unemployment, underemployment and the working poor quagmire and you will see how Nigeria will be a heaven on earth.

Dirty money is a worldwide phenomenon, if any of you guys take the time to study the history of the US, the whole country economy and infrastructures like Universities, businesses were build from proceeds from the Chinese opium trade.

So what are we talking about here. It's not that i support unwholesome means to getting wealth, but am saying that the whole world runs on dirty money, simple.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Investment for Nigerian Youths? by joftech(m): 7:17pm On Jul 26, 2005
So does NSE have a central repositry server that you can connect to obtain these data, and what is the assurance that they will let you get access to their server if they have one that's online 24/7. If i were to the the Admin, i will have some reservations about giving access to just anybody. Anyway is any stock broker that's trading on the NSE floor here, i will like to hear about what and what they are using for their trading.

I will be willing to be a part of the project. I will sugest that the following name for the portal ( www.olofofo.com.ng, www.arinurode.com) PM me for more. LOL

most enterpreneurs was their fear of lossing hold of their business.i.e they attached too much sentimental value to the businesses and that was the reason for the poor growth of most businesses.
@lordimpaq, one of the worst thing that can ever happen to an enterpreneur is to see his controlling power in his/her company eroded away by bringing in others, you won't find it easy to bring others on board, since you don't know their vision for your company and one thing that is sure is that people coming to join you are coming to earn some nice bucks, but what you want is mostly to have a thriving company where you will get to be the lord and general overseer.

If anyone know what those VCs at Google went through when Larry & Co started foot dragging about offering their IPO, you will know that it's not easy to go public or bring others on board. For them to even hire the present CEO, they make sure he his willing to let them run the show behind the scene, today anyone that follow what's going on in Google closely knows that Eric Schmidt is only but a figure head ceo.

Power no dey easy to leave just like that my bros.
