That is the funniest thing. If it is based solely on individual performance. Messi would have won it almost 9 times in the past decade. It has been tweaked to accommodate the likes of Ronaldo, Modric etc.

Individual performance with a mix of team trophies have been the deciding factor. Jorginho has the trophies but individually, how many MOTM's does he have? How many games does he boss? Statistically it's Lewy but he falls short of a significant trophy. While Messi does not match Lewy, he makes up for it with the Copa.

Ronaldo fans are just so unlucky that credible rivals for the 2021 Balon d'or like Mbappe, Kante, Lewy all fell by the way side when important trophies mattered. Kante's CL kinda matched Messi's Copa but Kante was no where acceptable in the Euros.
