The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders forum has described the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari as a coup against constitutional democracy.

In a statement signed by Chief E K Clark (South South), Ayo Adebanjo (South West), Chief John Nwodo (South East) and Dr Pogu Bitrus (Midddle Belt), the leaders in a statement titled ‘Constitutional Crisis As Buhari Illegally Suspends CJN’ , the leaders said they have checked through the constitution and found out that President Buhari lacks the power to suspend the CJN unilaterally except by 2/3 of the National Assembly.

The statement reads: “The attention of Southern and Middle Belt Leaders has been drawn to a coup against Constitutional Democracy in Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari by the Suspension of CJN Walter Onnoghen this evening and swearing in a replacement.
This is a constitutional crisis foisted by desperation and morbid desire to foist rule of thumb.

“We have checked through the constitution and the President has no power to unilaterally suspend the CJN.

“Section 292 of the amended 1999 Constitution is clear that the President can only remove the CJN with 2/3 of Senate resolution.

“To us what has been done is resort to self-help after the Court of Appeal issued an order stopping the trial of the CJN by the CCT presided over by a man answering charges in court over corruption allegations but still in office.

“The latest action is a clear suspension of the constitution and enthronement of full blown dictatorship.

“We reject the illegal suspension and demand its immediate reversal.
The suspension is null and void and of no effect whatever.

“An emergency meeting of the Forum holds shortly on this total aberration.
We call on all Nigerians to wake up to the reality that our democracy is now under threat and use all constitutional means to defend it.

The Rivers State Police command says it has shot dead three gunmen suspected to have killed Nnafor Ogbu, the Ogale Eleme Youth President.

Spokesman for the command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the development in Port Harcourt on Monday, said that the gang on Sunday, broke into Ogbu’s house in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area and shot him dead.

According to him, Elijah Eleke, the DPO of the Area, quickly mobilised men of the Division in search of the hoodlums.

Mr Omoni said the gang was intercepted at the refinery junction in Port Harcourt. The suspects immediately opened fire on the police.
“In a return fire, three of them were fatally wounded and died before medical attention could be given, while others escaped,” he said.
He added that the four corpses had been evacuated and deposited in a mortuary.

Mr Omoni said one locally made double barrel gun and 11 live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.
The spokesman said investigations into the matter had commenced, assuring that the fleeing members of the gang would be arrested and brought to justice.

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Monday, declined the request by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to make an order stopping the Code of Conduct Tribunal from proceeding with his trial.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal had on January 14 fixed January 22 for hearing in the six counts of false assets declaration filed by the Code of Conduct Bureau against Justice Onnoghen.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), had also filed a motion asking for an order directing Onnoghen to step down as the CJN pending the conclusion of his planned trial before the CCT.

Two non-governmental organisations – Centre for Justice and Peace Initiative; and International Association of Students – had approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, praying for orders quashing the charges against the CJN.

In response to the NGOs, Justice Evelyn Maha of the Federal High Court, Abuja had issued two separate orders directing that status quo should be maintained in Justice Onnoghen’s case before the CCT.

In furtherance of the steps to stop Justice Onnoghen’s proposed arraignment before the CCT, his lawyers, led by Chief Adegnoyega Awomolo (SAN), went before the Court of Appeal to obtain another restraining order against the CCT.

Awomolo told a three-man Court of Appeal panel, led by Justice Abdu Aboki, that the restraining order was necessary to preserve the subject matter of the case at the CCT.

But Federal Government’s counsel, Emmanuel Omonuwa, said he was only served with the court process by Justice Onnoghen’s legal team on Monday morning and he needed at least three days to reply.

After a short deliberation among themselves, the three Justices of the appeal court declined granting Awomolo’s prayer to halt the CCT proceedings against the CJN.

“We are of the view that no form of order shall be made at his stage pending hearing of motion on notice adjourned till January 24,” the panel ruled.

Last night the Presidential Debate took place which had the incumbent President Buhari missing in action and as such the candidate of the PDP and President to be come 16th Feburary 2019 also took a decision to pull out of the debate due to the absence of President Buhari.

The action of Atiku has been criticised by some and supported by some too.
For those who are student of Politics and History. You will agree with me that Atiku made a very good decision to withdraw from the debate since his major opponent was absent.

From my little experience and participation in politics I will categorically say that non of the 3 other candidates which includes Kingsley Moghalu, Fela Durotoye and Oby Ezekwesili can effectively and efficiently carry out their manifesto and deliver the promised change because they and their political party cannot execute a fraction of what they promised. They lack the muscle, structure and above all their political party isn't popular so there was no need for Atiku to waste his time after a 12 hours trip from the United States of America to debate with candidates who cannot win one complete local government out of the 774 local government in the general election. To me they are just mere distraction.

Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gun powder. President Buhari doesn’t know his left from his right nor anything happening around him. Decisions on National issues are taken on his behalf, this is not propaganda; apart from the evident catastrophic outing of Wednesday last week during his interview section, his wife Aisha Buhari has openly told Nigerians that the cabals are in charge of the country.

February 16th isn't about the next election but the next generation .
It is about Nigeria. With all sense of decency, any vote you cast for Moghalu, Fela or Ezekwesili is a vote for Buhari. A vote you cast not for Atiku is a vote to mess up the lives of your children and generation unborn.
