Ahead of the September 10 governorship election in Edo state, the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the ousted national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the candidate of the group, Mathew Iduoriyekwemwen, as the PDP’s candidate for the election.
A member of the House of Representatives representing Egor/Kpoba-Okha Federal Constituency, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, was at the INEC office on Friday to submit a court ruling ordering the commission to accept Iduoriyekwemwen as the PDP candidate for the election in Edo state.
But there was an altercation between the lawmaker and the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr. Rotimi, when the latter scolded the delegation for barging into the commission’s premises to address the media without any notice.
The plan of Sheriff’s delegation to meet with the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, failed as the chairman was said to have left for Jumat prayers.
Addressing newsmen later outside the INEC premises, the lawmaker said the commission’s decision to publish the name of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who emerged from a primary election conducted by the PDP National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi as PDP candidate for the election was illegal.
He said the INEC’s legal department should advise the commission’s chairman, Prof Mahmud Yakubu accordingly in order for the “righful thing to be done”, adding that “INEC must obey court order”.
“Today, I am challenging INEC to do the needful and be on the side of the law. We are not in a Kangaroo country. Nigeria is a great nation. Something good can come out of Nigeria. I have submitted a letter to the INEC chairman to as soon as possible, with immediate effect, put Hon Iduoriyekwemwen as candidate of PDP for the Edo governorship election because the court order has been struck out.
“Today, Hon Iduoriyekwemwen is the rightful candidate. So there is nothing more to say about this than for INEC to be on the side of the law, obey the law of the land. Anybody that refuses to obey the law of the land will face the music at the end of the day.
“There was a court order given recently by Justice Adeniyi of the FCT High Court. There was a case filed by Ize-Iyamu at the same court that has brought us to where we are now but INEC decided to place Ize-Iyamu as candidate of PDP; which is the Makarfi group.
“It is also on record that the Judgement given by Justice Abang, said that in law, Makarfi does not exist, that His Excellency, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is the authentic chairman of PDP,” he said.

Hit by the current economic recession in the country, most money deposit banks and insurance firms have slashed their workers’ salaries by between 20 and 50 per cent.
Investigations by Saturday PUNCH revealed that Diamond Bank Plc, Heritage Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, First Bank Plc and Wema Bank Plc have reduced their workers’ salaries as of August 31, 2016. This has also been confirmed by management sources and workers in the affected banks.
While Diamond Bank was said to have slashed salaries by 30 per cent, Heritage by 30 per cent, First Bank and Wema Bank workers’ salaries were slashed by 20 per cent each.
It was learnt that the banks tied the decision to cut salaries to workers’ ability to meet deposit targets, which have become unrealistically high in recent time. Hence, workers who failed to meet their targets had their salaries slashed.
Investigations also revealed that some insurance companies have extended the targets of premium generation to their employees.
Before, the marketing departments of the underwriting firms and insurance agents were responsible for generating premium for the companies.
Due to the economic crisis in the country, many insurance firms increased the targets for their marketing departments’ workers with threats of not paying them salaries if they failed to meet it (targets). As such, insurance workers who failed to meet their premium targets, according to industry sources, also had their salaries slashed.
An insurance employee, who spoke to one of our correspondents, said, “Before, it was only the marketers that they used to give targets to. Now, some of us also have targets ranging between N40, 000 and N100, 000 monthly and our promotion and salaries are tied to our performance.”
A Zenith Bank worker, who simply identified herself as Nkem, confirmed the slash in salaries.
Nkem said she resumed work after her annual vacation only to discover that she didn’t get the same salary that she had always received.
Similarly, another Zenith Bank employee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told one of our correspondents that there was eight per cent cut in their salaries, beginning from August.
The source said the reason given by the bank was that the workers had not been paying the correct tax, hence, the bank had to start the deduction to regularise the tax payable.
On the fear that some workers could be sacked, the source said such fear had always been there, but the current one was beyond description.
He said, “The problem now is that there has not been any promotion since last year, which seems strange.”
An employee of First Bank, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he had been sleeping and waking up in worry in the past two weeks due to fear of being sacked.
The banker, who just got married in Lagos, said workers had received an email from the bank’s Managing Director about a “new development soon.”
He said, “We have been receiving hints of more lay-offs due to the economic recession in the country, which has deeply affected the banking sector. Some employees lost their jobs two months ago. We also learned that another set of people will be laid off between September and October.”
Saturday PUNCH learnt that Ecobank has yet to slash its workers’ salaries, but there is apprehension among the bank’s employees that their pay might be slashed any moment from now.
One of the bank’s senior members of staff, who preferred to be addressed as Handsome Guy, said it had become a tradition among Nigeria’s banks to be imitating one another’s policies, especially those affecting workers’ welfare.
A worker with First Bank Plc, who simply identified himself as Jimson, confirmed to one of our correspondents on Thursday that most bank workers now go to work with the fear that they could be sacked anytime.
“There is perpetual fear in all banks. Every category of workers in the banks is affected by the economic crisis,” he said.
He, however, noted that some bank workers had been resigning and travelling abroad, especially the United States and Canada, to avoid being sacked.
Jimson said, “One of my colleagues just resigned last month because of the fear of losing his job and travelled to the U.S to seek greener pastures. But those who are not interested in leaving Nigeria have devised many means to survive the harsh economy should their letters of sacking come anytime. They are setting up small scale businesses.
“The most common ones are laundry services and restaurants which require capital outlay of N500, 000.
“The academically-sound ones among them have been moving to private universities to take appointments there. The problem is on the high side now. There is perpetual fear among bank workers that they can be fired at anytime.”
The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions’ Employees confirmed the development in the banks to Saturday PUNCH.
NUBIFIE Secretary General, Mohammad Sheick, said the issue had become a serious concern to the union.
Sheick said, “There is apprehension in the banking sector. Recently, there was mass sacking by banks and the Federal Government directed that those who were sacked during that period should be recalled.
“We have had about two meetings with the Federal Ministry of Labour on the issue and we are hopefully looking at the possibility of the ministry calling us to another meeting so that we can have an understanding on how to respond to the emerging issues like economic recession and other factors that are affecting the operations of banks.
“Even before the economic recession, the banks have always responded to any policy of the government negatively. The first thing that came to the mind of the banks’ management, which the union has always disagreed with, is to lay off workers.
“They (banks) have to think outside the box and objectively. If they want to cut cost or reduce certain expenditure because of certain government’s policy, then the reality is that they should know where they should direct their attention.
“I can volunteer to say that the thing that eats deep into banks profit and loss is nothing other than the kind of lifestyle of the management staff of the banks. For example, the monthly salary of one executive director is more than the salaries of 100 workers. This is apart from other privileges and perks attached to him as an executive director.”
The Head, Corporate Communications, First Bank, Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, denied that the lender cut its employees’ salaries.
In a response to an emailed question, he said, “This is totally incorrect and unfounded. First Bank staff salaries, allowances and bonuses are being fully paid as and when due.”
The spokesperson of Zenith Bank, Mr. Akin Olaniyan, could not be reached on the telephone. Text message and email questions sent to him were not responded to.
The spokesperson, Diamond Bank, Mike Omeife, denied that the bank had cut the salaries of some of its workers.
The Director-General, Nigerian Insurers Association, Mr. Sunday Thomas, said everybody is a marketer in the insurance firms because they need the premium to operate all the departments.
“It will not be out of order for the companies to give employees targets except the target is unrealistic,” he said.
However, economists said the high deposit targets and the attendant fear by bank and insurance workers could be a strategy by the two industries to survive the current economic reality in the country.
A renowned Economist and Managing Director, Cocosheen Nigeria Limited, Ikeja, Lagos State, Mr. Henry Boyo, agreed that such a measure could be a strategy by banks to remain in business.
He said, “Every sector in the country is affected by the economic crisis, not only the banks. For instance, if a company asks you to pick between being sacked and your salary being reduced, I think most people would prefer the latter option. This could be what is happening.”
Another Lagos-based economist, Dr. Babatunde Abrahams, predicts the mass sacking of workers in banks and insurance firms going by the latest development.
He said, “If anyone has been watching economic trends for a while in the country, you will discover that the sacking of workers is inevitable. Banks trade with customers’ deposits, but I can tell you that very few people have money in banks in this harsh economic period.”

Nigerians are indeed very funny people. Especially my Kano people. On Sunday night, I was sitting with a guy who sell tea near my house before call for prayers. An elderly man came and said, "bani hadin Buhari - Give me Buhari's mixture" and without saying anything, the guy gave him tea and small bread and collected 50 Naira and gave 10 Naira change. Nothing more said. I was baffled so I asked what that meant and the tea guy said hadin Buhari mean tea without milk plus small bread.
Again this morning, a friend came to visit me. I saw him off to his car and on my way back, I remembered I needed battery for my wireless mouse and stopped by a guy running a small kiosk nearby to get one. Just while I was walking away, a guy I met there said, "bani Buhari de Osinbajo - give me Buhari and Osinbajo". I immediately paused to see what he meant and again, without uttering a word, he gave him garri and groundnut. I returned back to ask again what that meant and he said Garri is Buhari, Osinbajo is groundnut while Bukola is sugar. Kano will always make a comedy out of every circumstance.
So, this afternoon, I feel like having Buhari, Osinbajo and Bukola.

Buhari refused to honour invitation to national debate before the last presidential election. I don't know his reason but I suspect he didn't have the stamina to stand for hours because of his age. A debate was organised at the Benson Idahosa University for the governorship aspirants, Godwin Obaseki did not show up & sent his campaign director. The panel refused to recognise the man. Another dabate was organised last week by the media & Mr Obaseki still failed to show up. I think there must be reason why the man is not making himself available for debate. |

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party assumed another dimension on Tuesday as the factional National Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, rejected the leadership of its Board of Trustees.
Sheriff also said that the solutions proferred by the BoT for the resolution of the crisis in the party fell short of the agreement he said his faction had with the peace panel set up by the BoT.
The former governor of Borno State stated this in a statement in which he said that the outcome of the meeting held by the Board in Abuja on Monday, was not in tandem with the decision he claimed was reached with the Dickson/Mantu reconciliation committee.
Sheriff, who stated this in a statement signed by his deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojuogboh, however, agreed with the BoT that the next national convention must hold in Abuja.
The factional national chairman of the main opposition party was reacting to the decisions reached by the BoT at its meeting in Abuja on Monday, where it said that a new national convention committee be put in place to organise the proposed national convention.
He specifically accused the Chairman of the BoT, Senator Walid Jibrin, of perpetuating himself in office.
The statement said, “That the BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin chairmanship has brought crisis to the party.
“In any case his tenure has expired as he has spent more than 10 years as the Secretary and Chairman BoT which runs contrary to the constitution (of the party).”
He said there were other qualified members of the party in the board, who he said, were ready to lead it.
He said that the agreement his faction had with the peace panel was that the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the party should resign from office.
Apart from this, he also said that it was agreed that Sheriff would preside over the party’s National Executive Committee meeting where he said, a new national convention committee would be named.
Ojuogboh said that it was wrong for the BoT to pass a vote of confidence on the Makarfi-led caretaker committee, which he said had failed twice to organise an acceptable national convention.
He, therefore, called on Makarfi to resign his appointment.
He said, “Consequently, we can now confidently inform the general public that well-meaning Nigerians have been urging Senator Makarfi to resign to save democracy.”
When contacted, Jibrin said he was not going to react now, saying he would do so “after reading the report.”
The spokesperson for the national caretaker committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, was also said not to be in the country.
When our correspondent visited the temporary national secretariat of the party at Wuse Zone 2, no member of the caretaker committee was around to speak on the issue.

The thought of how to get money to pay children's school fees, repair vehicle & even provide the next meal can take a driver's mind off the road to somewhere very far away & it is the bang of accident that brings him back to himself. I have not bn able to service my car for about 5 months now. I know its wrong but I can not be talking about car when there is no food on the table. I believe most folks that run their mouth & comment here are dependants who do not know the pit we are in yet. Buhari was invited to the televised debate to explain his agenda before the elections & how he will make 1 dollar exchange for 1 naira & the way they will provide 3,000,000 jobs in a year, he failed to show up because they were empty promises. We are indeed a backward nation because I can not imagine a Hilary Clinton or Donald Trump winning the US election without making themselves available for debate. It can only happen in Nigeria where they will tell you whether you attend debate or not, you can still win the election. |

Lagos Na wah This levy is collected in most parts of southern Nigeria. After purchasing the land, they will not allow you start foundation works except you pay a levy, which costs between 100k-250k in Benin. Each floor you want to deck is paid for. At roofing stage you make payment. You pay for fencing & pay another amount to drill a borehole in your house & they harass you as if you are in Libya where anything goes because there is no government. This is authorised stealing approved by government. Most governments are afraid to check this act because of possible backlash during election. The individuals terrorise land owners & force them to stop work until their demands are met. In this civilised world? |

Update: its a cult fight. He had multiple shots on the hand, stomach and genitals. His brother and sister have carried his dead body to God knows where. The unknown gunmen hijacked a toyota camry spider and drove off rambo style. They were 6 men with 4 AK47.
