They promised that the exchange rate will be N1 to a US dollar but the dollar is being exchanged for N400. What a paradox. The Naira is fast loosing value like the Zimbabwean dollar. Bad time to do international business. Next time they promise, they expect us to believe them. Nigerian politicians will promise anything to get votes.

henryanna36:
GOV. GANDUJE COMMENDS SUDANESE GOVT. FOR GRANTING SCHOLARSHIPS TO KANO CITIZENS

The government of Sudan has awarded full scholarships to 91 indigenes of Kano state, to study various degree programmes at a public university in the country, the International University of Africa, Khartoum.

Already, 41 students have departed under first batch of the programme while the second batch of 50 students will depart the country from next Wednesday.

Addressing beneficiaries of the scholarship at the Government House in Kano, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said the programme would go a long way in adding value to the effort of his administration to make the state’s economy knowledge driven.

The governor asserted that the initiative could not have come at a better time than now when Nigeria’s economy is facing challenges and the state government is finding it difficult to pay the bursaries of its students abroad.

He, therefore, urged the beneficiaries not to squander the precious opportunity but to be good ambassadors of Nigeria by devoting time to academic excellence and exemplary conduct.

“You have nothing to reward the government of Sudan but to pray for the progress of that county since it is from their public treasure that your education and welfare are being financed”, governor Ganduje urged the students.

Governor Ganduje expressed appreciation to the government of Sudan for sponsoring the education of students from Kano who have demonstrated exceptional potential to learn, noting that the investment in learning would yield plentiful results.

In his remarks, the Sudanese Consul in Kano, Sheikh Muhammad bn Othman el-Tayyeb explained that the scholarship was offered to deserving students from Kano to advance cordial relations between Kano state and Sudan.

He explained that the students would pursue degree programmes in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Medical laboratory Science, Islamic Law, Computer Science and Mass communication and at the same time learn Arabic in addition to memorizing at least one quarter of the Holy Qur’an.

Sheikh El-Tayyeb added that the scholarship scheme is in line with the commitment of the Ganduje administration to provide quality education to its citizenry, adding that on successful completion of their degree programmes, beneficiaries of the Sudanese scholarship would contribute immensely to the economic progress of Kano and Nigeria as a whole.

PoliticsRe: Naval Officer Slaps NURTW Official In Lagos. Photos by july66: 8:02pm On Aug 03, 2016
ChangeIsCostant:
An official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) got more than what he anticipated for after he confronted a Navy personnel earlier today at Alakija bus stop in Lagos.

According to witnesses, the NURTW official wanted the collect fees from the driver of the bus which the Navy personnel boarded (which is against the "law" in Lagos). He was told to stand down due to the presence of a "staff" in the bus but he refused.

According to reports, the young Naval officer tried to calm the already infuriated official but he got angry the more and even charged at him (probably due to his young face). The young officer came down from the bus and rained him with hot slaps.

Within few minutes, a patrol van from Navy town which is across the road stormed the area and descended on him. The official was immediately dragged away in front of his colleagues.... Guess we all know what happened next.

may be they employed him newly & was not tutored on the norms. Hard lesson. Next time he will know what to do. Truth is that force men are 'staff' in Lagos & so don't pay T-fare & in return the vehicles they board are insured from incessant levies while the officers are still in transit.

PoliticsRe: Profile Of Olabiyi Durojaiye: NCC Chairman by july66: 7:10pm On Aug 03, 2016
7thCANON:
Birth and early career

Durojaiye earned a BSc (Economics) London, and an LLB, London. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1979, and is a Barrise Supreme Court of Nigeria. He also graduated from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru. He worked for 35 years in the Nigerian public sector, including 28 years as a Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the National Mint. He worked with the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve System in the U.S.A and the City University London between 1964 and 1982.

Political career

Durojayi was an elected member of the 1988/89 Constituent Assembly. In 1992 he was a candidate to run for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), losing to M.K.O. Abiola. Abiola's subsequent election as president was quashed by General Ibrahim Babangida, leading to a return to military rule. In December 1996 Durojayi was arrested by the military regime of General Sani Abacha, and was imprisoned for 560 days and mistreated while in jail. A June 1997 report stated the 63-year-old lawyer was reportedly in poor health and suffering from high blood pressure caused by his treatment. Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience and campaigned for his release.

Durojaiye was an elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999-2003). After taking his seat in the Senate he was appointed to committees on Judiciary, Establishment (Chairman) and Special Projects. In December 2002 he recommended a life jail-term for anyone who perpetrated election fraud. He won the AD primaries to represent the party in the Ogun East constituency in the 2003 elections, although he was threatened with legal action by Chief Adamo Olayinka Yesufu, a rival for the nomination. In the event, the PDP candidate Tokunbo Ogunbanjo won the election

Durojaiye's wife Florence Olufunso Adejoke died on 6 June 2009, aged 72, in Ikeja, two months after she and her husband had marked their 50th wedding anniversary. She was survived by her husband, six children and many grandchildren. In a March 2010 interview Durojaiye, now in his late 70s, spoke out against the covert way in which President Umaru Yar'Adua's illness was being handled, with the President smuggled back into Nigeria at night and no reports issued on his condition.

I think Buhari needs to change & take the plight of Nigerians serious. When a french man is killed, their president does not only comment, he visits the scene to show his concern. If one US citizen is shot by police, the citizens go on the street to protest the police action & their president most say something. But here in Nigeria, if a hundred people are killed by Fulani herdsmen, the president remains quite & when you try to speak out the whole episode is politicised by die hard political bigots who see nothing wrong in what government does as long as their party is in power. Fela caption them well as "suffering & smiling".

Where now is the principle of separation of powers? The executive always wants to effect change in the leadership of the legislature in Nigeria so that they can control them. People don't see this as a big deal but when the legislators are 'planing', they have not started the process o, to impeach a Gov or President, there is commotion everywhere as if it is a no go area for the legislators. We need to change our orientation in this country because what is good for the goose is equally good for the gander.

When I do it will appear to be Nepotism but I won't give a job to anyone if them not qualified.

This is different from large scale LOOTING as perpetrated under Jonathan. Stealing from future generations is not on the same level as helping a few from the current young generations.

faorex:
Breaking News: HND/BSc Dichotomy Removed.

At last, it is with excitement, capital joy amidst jubilation and celebration of over 20 years struggle of Nigerian Polytechnic students and graduates including the staff unions and heads of Polytechnic in Nigeria.

I am pleased to announce to the public that the COUNCIL OF ESTABLISHMENT which comprises of all the head of service of the 36 States of the Federation and the head of service of the Federation approved the removal of this long overdue dichotomy which hinder the career progression of HND holders in civil service in her meeting held in Minna Niger state capital during the week after an exhaustive deliberation, pro and anti deposition which ended with tie vote of 16 against 16 while the head of service of the Federation voted in support as presiding officer after the tie, to earn the Polytechnic sector the victory.

Making the vote 17 pro against 16 anti. Henceforth, This resolution automatically lift embargo on HND holder career progression in civil service as the holder can now rise beyond Deputy Director in civil service as well enjoy all sort of benefits/promotion to the topmost rank due to BSc holders in civil service.

It is on record that this same Council was the sole obstacle for this struggle since year 2005 when President Olusegun Obasanjo pronounced the removal of this dichotomy, the Council called the then president statement a mere pronouncement with out documentation and refused it adoption nor implementation.

It will be recalled that the last meeting of the council which was held at Ilorin kwara state capital witness heavy presence of Nigeria Polytechnic students which I personally led as the National Senate President of NAPS to the council in protest for the need for the council to reconsider her position on the said matter.

A position paper was submitted after the protest as demanded by the then head of service of Federation who was the chairman of the Council, unfortunately, the matter was completely discussed nor concluded at Ilorin until now in her next meeting in Niger state.

The Council often meets every 3 years, On behalf of the entire West Africa Polytechnic students and most especially the Nigeria Polytechnic students, I express sincere gratitude to the head of service of states and that of the Federation who stood for us and with us, the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Board for Technical Education NTBE, Council of Head of Polytechnic and Colleges of Technology COHEADS, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic ASUP, past and present leadership of National Association Of Polytechnic Students NAPS and by extension the Nigerians Union of journalist for their support all through the struggle.

We look forward for immediate implementation by all state of the Federation, Federal government agencies and departments while I call on all Polytechnic student to join us as we Commence appreciation/celebration.

Aluta continua, Victoria Ascerta,
No retreat no surrender,
As long as we live, struggle continues. #OluwaLoniGlory#

The coast is still not clear. In the public service, both cadres have different routes to the top. While the entry rank of one with B.Sc engineering is Engr. grade 11, that of Hnd holder is Higher Technical Officer & a chief Technical Officer on Grade level 14 is subordinate to an Engineer grade 11 on grade level 08. For the accounting cadre, a Bachelor's degree holder is Accountant 11, while the Hnd holder is Higher Executive Officer. Even with your Bachelor's degree in engineering, you may not go beyond the rank of a senior Engineer on grade level 10 unless you register with relevant professional bodies. In case of Hnd holders in engg, you still can't get registered as an Engineer except you seek additional qualifications. Even in the polytechnics, a degree holder is employed as a lecturer while an Hnd holder is employed as an instructor. This is the reality in the public service which may however be different from the private sector . I have an ND. Today I have attained higher degrees. I maintain you can attain any status you desire with time and efforts. Those who have P.hd today have one head. They may not have been more intelligent than you when they started. You don't have to run through all your educational pursuit at a go. Start somewhere, get a job if you can & continue to pursue your edecational targets at various stages in your life.

OduduaDefender:
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh (retd), has said ex-Niger Delta militants will start receiving their stipends on Monday.

Boroh consequently appealed to the ex-militants in the region to shelve the planned protests scheduled to hold on Monday.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Head of the Media and Communication Department of the office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Abuja, Mr. Piriye Keyaramo.

The coordinator, who expressed concern over the plight of the ex-agitators in respect of the delay in the payment of their stipends, explained that President Muhammandu Buhari appreciated their patience and the challenges were being addressed.

The statement read in part, “President Buhari attaches so much importance to the Amnesty Programme, which explains why the President in his inaugural address to the nation specifically promised to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place for the ex-agitators in the region.”

Boroh added that the Federal Government planned to improve the amnesty programme for the benefit of the 30,000 ex-militants and other youths in the region.

“President Muhammandu Buhari, is already putting together a youth development and empowerment package that would directly impact the ex-agatators and other youths in the region,” he said.

The essence of approving the 13% derivation money to oil producing states is to develop the communities & check youth restiveness. With the agitations I think that concession should be diverted fully to paying the militants since they prefer stomach infrastructure to infrastructure that will improve their communities.

PoliticsRe: Court Didn't Declare Sheriff PDP Chairman Or Makarfi Committee Illegal: PDP by july66: 2:09pm On Jul 30, 2016
chie8:
LET’S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT BEING THE CONTENT OF PRESS CONFERENCE BY PRINCE ADEDAYO ADEYEYE MEMBER OF THE PDP NATIONAL CARETAKER COMMITTEE ON 29TH JULY, 2016

Ladies and Gentlemen of the press:

As you are aware yesterday 28th day of July, 2016, the case filed by Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff and 8 other Plaintiffs against the Peoples Democratic Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission i.e. Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/464/2016 came up before Hon. Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division.

The Plaintiffs filed an application to stop the National Convention slated for 17th August, 2016 at Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

When this matter came for hearing yesterday 28th July, 2016, Learned Senior Counsel Ferdinand Orbih, SAN who was briefed to represent the 2nd defendant, the Peoples Democratic Party announced appearance for the said 2nd Defendant PDP.

O.O. Fakunle, SAN also announced appearance for the PDP claiming to have been briefed by one Barr. Bashir Maidugu who is the 5th Plaintiff in the matter.

In addition, members of the National Caretaker Committee applied to be joined as Parties to the case. The application for joinder was filed by Yunus Ustaz Usman, SAN and Mr. Raji Ahmed, SAN.

That was the only application that was argued yesterday 28th July, 2016, and adjourned to 15th August, 2016 for ruling.

Now on the widely reported “ORDERS” purported to have been made by Hon. Justice Okon Abang, it is important to note the following:

a. The motion seeking to restrain the PDP from conducting the proposed 17th August, 2016 National Convention has not been heard by the Court and no date has been fixed for the hearing of same.

b. What was before the Court yesterday was the issue of who is the authentic legal Counsel for the PDP as between Ferdinand Orbih, SAN and O.O. Fakunle, SAN.

The Court in determining the question of Legal representation held that the appointment of O.O. Fakunle, SAN by Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff was acceptable to the Court.

It must be emphasized that at no stage did the Hon. Judge set aside the judgment of Justice A.M. Liman of the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court, which could have led to the dissolution of the National Caretaker Committee.
An Order validating Sheriff as National Chairman could not have arisen from the issue of proper legal representation.

For the avoidance of doubt, the portion of the ruling relating to this is herein- under reproduced:
“Though I have powers to nullify the decision of the Port Harcourt Division that recognized Makarfi Leadership, I will not do so because there is no application to that effect before me. I will, however allow the Court of Appeal to do justice to that”

This is necessary because proceedings of Courts of Law should not be subject of subjective manipulation. We are a law abiding Committee and will always continue to operate within the ambit of the law.

It is not possible in Law that a Judge of a Court of record will acknowledge the existence of a valid judgment and proceed to make the kind of Orders purportedly attributed to him.

Ladies and Gentlemen; it should be very clear to you now that the ruling of yesterday did not at any point hand over the Leadership of PDP to Sen. Ali Modu sheriff, it did not declare the Sen. Makarfi led Caretaker Committee illegal and did not stop the proposed 17th August, 2016 National Convention.

Quoting Abang “Though I have powers to nullify the decision of the Port Harcourt Division that recognized Makarfi Leadership, I will not do so because there is no application to that effect before me. I will, however allow the Court of Appeal to do justice to that”. I am confused here. Does a Judge of the Federal High Court have powers to nullify the decision of another court of coordinate jurisdiction? Educate me please based on Abang's rhetoric above.
