LegitBoyy: Please kindly offer your insights as i am in a similar position too. I have an offer for LLM International Commercial Law at Birmingham City University and Bournemouth University. I'm really confused regarding the best option as i intend to work too while studying. Cyberknight: This particular LLM specialisation is not likely to fetch you much. Truth be told, the market for solicitors and lawyers of all stripes is not really favourable, but if you must do an LL.M, choose a different specialisation. I would suggest areas like financial regulation and compliance, tax law, public procurement law, etc.
Avoid "international" law in all its iterations as well as the "oil and gas" crap. I think Cyberknight has done justice to your question |

SamReinvented: Thank you so much Justwise for your reply. I'm generally aware of these points, it is that "putting off" sentiment that I wish to know more about its intensity, especially when it comes to prospects. But you only touched briefly on that point.
I initially wanted to go to Sunderland, but then I started having second thoughts about the uni due to prospects of the program (from what I have read, actual professional engineering would give far better prospects, than management engineering). So, I'd like to know if the trade-off is really worth it in this case. In other words, would recruiters choose to hire Msc Engineering Management from Sunderland before even considering Msc Electronic Engineering from Bedfordshire?
Btw, Electronic Engineering program at UofB is ranked very well (in the 40s), right amongst some very reputable universities (https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings/electrical-and-electronic-engineering). The program is also accredited with IET. The program at Sunderland on the other hand is not accredited by any institute. I wouldn't mind getting the good ranking msc program at UofB, only if the general sentiment about the uni isn't so bad. I keep focusing on sentiment, because I imagine no one would really bother to checkout the reputation of a specific program in a uni, if the general sentiment considers the uni as complete shit. It's that sentiment I want to really picture from UK residents. Would be grateful if you can also help to pick brains from residents in the Engineering sector; that would help a great deal. Thank you so much!
PS: I don't really care for the city life or student jobs or cost of living and the likes. Just specifically about the prospects/reputation of the certificate, as I have explained above. You have obviously done your research and you know what you are talking about. Make no mistake, ranking matters and it matters a lot, lets not kid ourselves, there is a reason why universities are always ranked top of the league not just in the UK but all over the world and each time you mention the name of that university it comes with respect and prestige. The sentiment you have about Bedfordshire university is not that of the best in the UK or among the best. Universities are ranked based on: Research, teaching , Industry Income, International Outlook etc when any university is constantly performing below average in those areas then the impression of such university will not be a good one and that will likely affect your employability. professional engineering will give you an edge in job market over management engineering because you have a core skill. This is like someone who studied information management and someone with software engineering, software engineering will always be in front foot job wise. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity/afford to attend the top ranked university to do so without hesitation, i regretted not burning the kindle, even take a loan to attend a much better university. Good universities are good because they are doing something better than other universities and their graduations in top companies. This is not to say that if you graduated from low ranked university you will not get a job, NO, that is not my point. |

SamReinvented: Hello gurus in the house, I need to make an ultimate decision between two schools/programs and I need external opinions... more specifically, from those who already live in the UK, and are familiar with the general public sentiments for the schools and the programs within the UK professional scene (outside of the formal rankings and reviews that outsiders like me, look at):
1. University of Sunderland (Msc Engineering Management - 1 year). 2. University of Bedfordshire (MSc Electronic Engineering with placement - 2 years).
My heart goes for the second program, but my online reading about the UofB is seriously holding my leg (although most of the bad reviews are old... and that specific course from the uni is well ranked and accredited). So, for those already living in the UK, which option do you think has a better edge from a holistic point of view? Anyone else can also put mouth.
cc Justwise Mimilyrics Stenon Skymoore. Sunderland has far better ranking, Bedfordshire is ranked bottom of all universities in the UK depending on the ranking website. I'm not sure that the placement will be in your field, so you may spend that placement year working in other area not related to what you are studying. I don't know Sunderland ass a city but i know Bedfordshire (Luton) too well, closer to London, getting part time job will not be a problem. Not really cheap city to live because of its proximity to London but its affordable of you manage well. The poor ranking is a put-off I think Sunderland will be a much cheaper city and its closer to Newcastle which is another popular city and that will help your job hunt during and after graduations.. |

mimilyrics: Sigh! He asked if his friend could transfer to him and I said yes which is true. He also asked if it would raise flags and I said no, it's not always necessary to capture the day the funds hit the account. These are questions that even family/friend sponsored Nairalanders have asked and the answer has always been in this vein.
I also further explained that sometimes source of funds are probed and sometimes they are not depending on if the the ECO is able to ascertain that the funds are truly available to the applicant. This even happens in the case of family giving you the money ie. Someone has been sponsored by an uncle here and the reason for the sponsorship was asked.
These are questions that have been asked on this thread by people who are funded by family and the answers I gave are not exclusive of the Tier 4/Student visa rules. Whatever I said was in line with what I typed above which is not outside of the rules and not an encouragement for circumventing the rules. This is pure misrepresentation and you know it which was why I was shocked to read that post from you. There is no way to explain this away. Account building just to get a visa and return the money is fraud simply. People can do whatever they want outside this thread but we should not encourage it here. You have been doing a good job here but in this particular case you got it wrong. |

mimilyrics: As far as I remember, the person was getting funds from a friend but can't remember seeing that it was just to show maintenance (maybe I missed it) hence my question.
There have been questions surrounding getting gift funding from family and friends and my answer was in line with that and the student visa rules so if you felt that the person was trying to circumvent the student visa rules, I understand you removing the comment and my response but pls don't say that I was encouraging the person to circumvent the student visa rules as that wasn't the case. Yes you encouraged the op to go ahead and allow his friend to transfer the money, you even go as far as saying he should come up with a reason and source of money is not probed. |

Chukwuka16: Justwise, one of the beautiful thing about life is HINDSIGHT.
Nairaland serves as a diary for me where I actually assess my thinking at different stages of my life and contrast it with the prevailing political economy. That is why I write and post on Nairaland. I started this during my PhD and it was here on this platform that I met my wife! In the future, I will compile my Nairaland posts as part of my autobiography.
I will be insincere to actually advise anyone now with Nigeria's climate to remain back there if one is YOUNG and not living the best life. If I have turnover of £1m annually from my Nigeria business, Nigeria will be my defacto home - until then, I keep working.
Don't be too quick to take my posts out of contest, read through the write up and understand where I'm coming from. The UK has given my some excellent platforms that have created opportunities for me in recent times. I am everyday discovering that new talents that I never knew I had. That is what the RIGHT environment does. Shocking that Is coming from the same person who just did exactly that. How many people were beheaded in France alone in the last two weeks? In London alone how many people were killed by knife in the last one year? In America how many blacks were shot dead by police alone? In Vienna today how many were shot dead? Despite all these we are still travelling to those countries in numbers. If any of these happened in Nigeria those countries will be sending travel alarm warning to their citizens to avoid travelling to Nigeria. Is crime a problem in Nigeria? Of course yes but let stop over exaggerating issues and put things in perceptive. SARS did not start killing Nigerians last month or even last year, so your sudden change of tune can only be attributed to mood swings. |

LagosismyHome: But Nigerians are something else sha .... why is everything that you dont want to hear called an attack or seen as attack. Why isnt it called a constructive feedback or caution because the road ahead might be very rough due to the pandemic , too much uncertainty especially with the UK job market which should be the ultimate destination
Yesterday I saw two comments although now hidden , calling names even insulting, justwise because he said he didnt think coming now is wise and someone even put enemy of progress
This is the same justwise who has spent years, time and effort putting student through visa inquiry. I found nairaland back in 2010 when we were doing my brother master application and it was justwise comments that guided us in the end to end process. 2010 is a whopping 10 years ago, till date he still takes his time to give students guidance and yet he enemy of progress ... our people matter tire me jare .
Anyone anybody wants to do go ahead .... LagosismyHome don't waste your time, time will tell. Last year this same Chukwuka was discouraging people from running away from Nigeria, today he is singing another tune. SARS did not start last month. Chukwuka16: Ok Sir.
You know what's funny though - most of the white/caribbean folks I know are relocating to Africa/Asia. Every now and then, I see them registering one local company in Mozambique, Sierra-Leone, Ghana and Nigeria! Was in the country late March/April and discovered South Africans coming into the country to carry out market survey on the feasibility of their business (in the energy sector - inverters and all that)!
Africa is the next cash cow, because all attention is shifting to her to make sure she doesn't derail global climate change agenda. We are talking serious money wrt climate change, adaptation, electrification etc. This is worth £billions in the long term. What are we doing about it? Nothing. UK is strategically developing policies to ensure that her foreign aids through DFID, DEFRA and BEIS contribute to net zero emissions by 2050. This is an open door to data scientists and engineers and agriculturists to start building capacity for windfall because local capacity must be built. These information are online and free to access but alas, my people perish for lack of knowledge.
Shey Nigeria is too hard, so we all should move away? What happens when they come into our country and milk it dry and then get it working? We would start running back abi? Nigerians have never been known to have an orderly system. Shey Canaan Land is run by angels? (We can talk about the issue of inequality and morality of the investments over beer), but isn't it functioning? I've been there and was humbled that such a place does exist. What of the Jehovah's Witness HQ in Edo State (Igieduma), is it not here in Nigeria? No power outage for years, clean, constant electricity, order and all.
I know Nigeria sucks. I know. It hurts to be saying this, but life in Nigeria can really get hard. I was there. But let's keep emotions aside, what value do you think you will add to the country you want to migrate to? What skills do you have that will wow them and incentivise these guys to sponsor you? If you are not coming in as a professional, the alternative is good old fashioned hard work (not mental work).
Sincerely, if the truth be told, the life of an average Nigerian in the abroad is an average one. Life shouldn't be average especially when matched with our potentials. And the daily dose of discrimination, forget it! |

You can’t even invest in a small shop because some thugs can loot your shop. You can’t invest in small medium business because Nigeria changes business regulations to favour the elite. You can’t even say you want to invest in forex, because SARS will say you’re yahoo yahoo
So what’s the use having that money in Nigeria if you can’t even do anything with it.
I’ve always been against people coming here to study, until the post study. With the post study, there is hope.
