Gentiger: Get the difference between 'bribery' and 'incentives.' This is where you err. No one forces you to pay extra. Pay government rate and have your file tossed aside. Give incentives to appreciate their efforts and motivate their performance and you'll still be on the side of the Law. Justwise, I am learnered and not lettered.
You can come up all sorts of names to justify bribery, when did it become your duty to give Govt officials an incentive? What you are giving is called bribe/backed-hand ...to get your service done quicker simple.

Gentiger: So I guess the extra cash your boss gives you to motivate your output is bribe? In your definition you said giving of money through 'unofficial' means.... Go back to my definition and correct your error. Money paid at NPC, IMMIGRATION and POLICE clearance offices were paid through the government established channels, not unofficial means. No arguments Justwise. You call the shots. We comply. I just don't like that tag 'bribery and corruption.' It shouldnt be associated with me.
If its through Govt established channel then why are you paying more than the official figure?

Spoondar: LET IT BE just live it for people to decide otherwise it is someone's wish to give or not to give.
Yes its an individual choice but it will not be encouraged and promoted through this forum.

Gentiger: Do you really know what bribery means? I can see you are getting it twisted. When you intend to induce an individual with money to escape a guilty verdict of the law or to influence them into doing what would be considered illegal in the eyes of the law, that's bribery. Please bend some of these strict rules to make it easier for the forumites.
You really need dictionary more than i do, when you give money or gift to alter somebody's behaviour/views/judgement then that is bribery. When you give a police officer money through unofficial means to facilitated a service then that is bribery.

I'm not ready to bend any rule, no number dropping or email dropping for some dodgy dealings please.
Travel › Re: DV 2013 Winners Meet Here by justwise(mod): 1:55pm On Jan 05, 2013
Gentiger: If you pay the government rate (official cost) for anything, you must be prepared to wait for the NORMAL time established by LAW for processing. You could wait for 6 months for your International Passport if you pay the official rate. 2 weeks minimum for NPC birth certificate if you pay N2500. That's the system we find ourselves in. Now the question is, who is willing to wait?

My brother, let's not pretend about it, even your tithes, offerings, seed faith etc gives you accelerated hearing before God and miraculous interventions in your earthly affairs. 'Winks'
If you keep giving bribe and complaining about corruption then you are as bad as those collecting the bribe. Don't help them make things even more difficult for generations to come. You are part of the problem and have only you to blame.

Pelumiv: @ Justwise, we all understand your point, but the issue here in Nigeria is if you can't beat them, join them. I remembered when I applyed for my passport, if I were to do it myself I will need a letter from the local government am living, for the local government to give you such letter, you need a letter from the Oba of your community. The Oba won't give you the letter if he doesn't know you personally or if you aren't a son or daughter of a poltician.
I try my best to get the letter from the Oba to no avail, no one told me before I paid an agent 18k for the passport and got it within 4days without stress, questions or interview.

The same things apply to all facet of nigeria life, namely job, admission to school, etc. You have to wise up in Naija or get scam or get stranded.
You don't need a letter from any Oba to get a passport, i got mine without a letter from anybody and many people i know the same. Letter from Oba or community letter is not necessary, its goes down to you not doing your research properly and bow to misleading info.

I agree with you that there is corruption in Nigeria but my point is that we should not use this forum to promote it even more.

Gentiger: Let me step in here my brother. You are doing a good and laudable job as the moderator and I understand what you are trying to prevent. That great.

Now, when you get to Alagbon for police clearance, the mopols at the entrance won't allow you in until you state WHO you want to see or WHY you came around. If you state WHO you want to see by name, you are given a clean pass. If you state WHY you came around, they will hijack you as their client and look for their colleagues to assign you to. You will pay much more as a result.

Let me tell you the case of 2 brothers I met there. Opposite the Police unit is Prisons and immigration offices respectively. These two brother were accosted by a prison warden who knew what they came for. He collected N30k from them, gave them a seat in the nearby restaurant and proceeded himself to do it on their behalf. The bubble burst when it was time to finger print and their physical presence were needed. Out of curiousity, the younger one asked the Police officer the official cost of the exercise. When he learnt they weren't supposed to pay more than N5k each, they reported the prison warden, who refunded the money and was reported to his boss for appropriate sanctions.

If what you've read here means anything to you, then get to understand that the release of such names and numbers is in the interest of the forumites. Thank you sir.
Yes, yes and yes those things do happen and who do we blame? You and me who keep encouraging it, so lets stop complaining about how corrupt police are because we facilitate it.
Travel › Re: DV 2013 Winners Meet Here by justwise(mod): 1:19pm On Jan 05, 2013
Gentiger: Noooo. This wasn't the intent. I remember dropping off a number too. Most of us device means to make it easier for others. I did my medicals and discovered why people pay more and reported. I met a very nice man when I cleared with the police and got a first class treatment and expeditiously too and decided to extend the same to others. We all know that in Nigeria nothing has a fixed price. The official cost of NPC birth certificate for instance is N2500 but people pay much more than that. National Passport costs less than N10k officially to procure. But people pay as much as N18k for it. I find those words 'bribe' and 'dodgy' spiteful. Let's always see the good intended by these forumites.

We all should be blamed for all that prob you narrated, we encouraged it, we promoted it and at the same time complain about corruption, if its cheaper officially why go through taut then? We like bribing our ways through something that was supposed to free. Why do i have to go through somebody to get things done? Why not walk into immigration/ police station and apply and pay directly to official channel? We can't have it both ways, bribe and still complain about corruption.

Yes when you do things through the back-door then its dodgy and corrupt, what else do you want to me to call it?

ogba1: I want to believe that the purpose of this forum is to help one another. So dropping numbers is to achieve that purpose and not for personal gains. Remember that not all the forumites live in lagos. You have a measure of confidence if you have someone to quickly contact.
Dropping a police officer's number is for personal gain, if you don't live in Lagos then visit police station in the state you live and get police report done. Nobody need to go through any police officer before getting a police report. There is no guarantee that the money is going into Govt pulse.

Yes the forum is to help each other and not to encourage corruption and help one police officer line up his pocket.
Travel › Re: DV 2013 Winners Meet Here by justwise(mod): 12:59pm On Jan 05, 2013
Imcool: Point of correction JUSTWISE, it's no back door deals and besides, d money is not going to my pocket. I only have it out on request and who do u thinks is promoting bribing and corruption? One who paid 7k like a lady i met same day dat i did mine or i who paid 4k cuz i was directed to d ASP by an immigration officer? If u don't like it like you claim, someone else may do. I don't thinks it bad to direct a forumist to one who will make things cheaper, easier and even faster by only give directives to his officers and in a tinkle of an eye, d certificate is done. If it's wrong house members pls let me know. HAPPY WEEKEND TO U ALL
I'm not bothered about how much the police did it for you or how fast it was done, why should one go through a police officer to get it done faster or cheaper? The officer is just lining his own private pocket, we should not encourage that and still complain about corrupt in Nigeria, nobody need to call any police officer in private before getting things done in Nigeria.

babybird82: Thanks Justwise. I hope they wont be asking for any sort of financial proof from them. So that means they will have to give me a letter of invitation also.

For the booking, can i use the diamond extra savings account credit card for it? Which other banks can one get acceptable credit card from?(
If you can prove that you have the money to finance the trip then they don't need show any financial proof.

I have never booked a flight from Nigeria so i wouldn't know the acceptable card to use.

iyke20024: iF You are a student thet means you should hold some form of visa or residency..or probably limited workpermit.

You can actually, apply for a tourist visa from georgia to visit the UK. Since Geogia is not Nigeria and you are a student there with prove, it should not be difficult like applying from Nigeria.

Make sure you do that on your holiday period and you dont mention your girl friend is there.

Apply for let say 10 days.
That is not the point, can he afford a trip to the UK and still have money left in Georgia to return to? Does he have a strong tie to Georgia apart being a student there?

werlay: My i got mine the day my school reg closed and still made it to register. Plus my visa took just 7 days to be approved.
Tip: if you have all the money, there is no need leavin it the account. You can pay your full fees plus living exp to the school. Then they'll refund your living exp to you when u get to uk. That makes your visa approval faster and less chance of being denied. Got this tip from the school when i wAnted to apply this time last yr and it took just 7 days for my visa to be approved. Many have been doing it like that and its workin. My couz who applied at the university of durham just got his visa using the same process. Took him 10 dAys
That is not encouraged either its part of student visa rule, you don't pay your maintenance money worth 9000 or 7200 to your school account, i'm hearing this for the first time.

All you pay to the school is school fees and accommodation deposit, the maintenance money (9000 or 7200) stays in your account.

@ Imcool

I don't like it when people start dropping number of police officers for some back-door deals. This place should not be used to promote or encourage bribery or some dodgy dealing.

@ idoo4love

Please stop dropping number of any police offer here, whoever want to get police report should visit police station and get it done.

babybird82: Welldone guys for time taken to assist people dat need it.

My question is this:

If I am sponsoring myself but a friend wants to accomodate me in the UK, what documents are they to provide for me?

Also, if I decide to go the booking route, how do I go about it? What cards do they accept and where can one get such cards in Nigeria?

Has anyone tried wakanow.com before? I don't know if booking done tru them can be cancelled and refunded.

Thank you in anticipation for your replies. God bless you.
If your friend promised to accommodate you then he should send you prove of adequate accommodation...tenancy agreement, mortgage paper for example.

If you want to use booking then the hotel website will list names of acceptable cards. Some hotel will refund you if you cancelled within 72hrs before checking in but at POE you may be asked to show prove of hotel accommodation you claimed to have booked and if you don't have one then your journey ends there.

Smooyis: Hi bros, I plan to join my wife in d uk by summer on a spousal settlement visa, but she told me abt d 18,000 pounds sponsors income per annum which she is not earning up to. We just got wedded when she came home last year and she holds a British passport. I plan to spend just a month for now because of my job here as a civil servant earning up to a gross salary of 150,000naira. How strong is this condition of 18,000 pounds going to affect my application? And is there anything I can do otherwise. Pls I need ur advise urgently. My wife seriously needs me as we ve got no child and of age. Thanks
Do you have enough savings from your salary to finance the trip and have enough to leave on when you come back to Nigeria? Do you have other investment in Nigeria..car, property etc? Yes the BHC may feel that because of your wife in the UK you probably will not come back but if you have a strong tie to Nigeria that will help your application.

To start with....do you work, own a business or a student? IV letter alone will not get you a visa if you don't have good source of income in Nigeria.

If you met all the requirements then i seriously doubt that you will be refused purely for not printing out the oanda exchange rate.

I understand where you are coming from but for the sake of transparency i suggest that we keep things open here, if email dropping and private chat is encouraged here, the thread will not grow and people will have little or nothing to read.

PLEASE MY PROGRAM STARTS ON JAN 21 AND AM YET TO GET MY CAS NUMBER BUH MAH AGENT TOLD ME ITS NOT TOO LATE TO APPLY FOR VISA.......PLEASE ADVICE ME
You really have to ask for extension from your school or defer your admission to Sept,

If one account does not contain all the money needed to meet the requirements then submit both accounts as long as the money in both of them have clocked 28days there.

fiscalcliff: Good morning all
A blissful 2013 to all nairalanders wink wink
Are the documents below all that's needed to apply for my visa {Am still awaiting my CAS}?
Please can someone explain [1] Notarized affidavit. Why swear an affidavit over your school result [2] Oanda print out?
Thanks

@niyimeg,I think you can apply with both accounts as your mum is the same sponsor. Let the gurus of this section give you their insights O!, as mine is my opinion.
As per the CAS thing, we dey the same boat for now. wink wink
You don't need any affidavit, you include affidavit if there is discrepancies in your DoB.

Oanda print out is the exchange rate of the day you submitted your application.
