Most automakers use timing chain. All Nissans and Infiniti use timing chains and it does not need to be changed. All their engines are DOHC.
U can get a lot of horsepower from a DOHC engine than a SOHC engine. E.G 94 Nissan maxima VG30e is a SOHC engine and displaces 160HP. Same displacement engine in a 2001 maxima VQ30DE displace 222hp. There are more tunings involved but u get the picture

Honda VTEC,,,memories, Toyota 05 is too boring in looks , Honda is better... U want a drivers car, buy honda, u want "me too" car , buy toyota....

Ferraris dont make manual anymore, to get their 0-60 quoted, they have to get faster shift times.. With DCT (Double clutch transmission) the upshift is faster than anyone can shift on manual transmission.. Every automaker is on DCT ish now..

Just put it in "". 1.2.3 just tells u the maximum gear the transmission can up-shift to. I use 2-3 during snow storm in Canada to increase traction. U can use it in nigeria to get out of a mud, get stuck, or when u coming down a steep heel and u dont want to gain speed. Just make sure u move back to "" when u done...

Why is the engine smoking U have to describe more about it . The 3.5 engine is not expensive. I can get u one from here but its cheaper to fix the one down there.

Get a Honda civic. U can beat it and punish it and it will always keep going. Buy a tool box and FSB ( factory service bulletin) and you can learn how to do general maintenance on it. Most drivers in Nigeria cant differentiate between engine and transmission fluid.
Then u can move up to whatever u want. U have to remenber that buying a car is the easiest part, the trick is keeping it running forever...

Trac: Nissan cars are imitations. The Z has always been an imitation of the Carerra (since the 70's) and now, they've taken up the Turbo. They are loud about it and do a poor job at it too. When you come up with something to beat the industry-benchmark for a fraction of the cost, there will definitely be an explanation to how to cost-savings were made.

That was after, a panel beater tampered with the catalyst.

3.785 LITRES = 37KM --- CITY (STANDARD)
3.785 LITERS = 48KM ----- HIGH WAY (STANDARD)

I have thought of changing the entire stretch of that compartment from the engine point to the exhaust.

To a brand new one.

Run the code, with that VERY BAD MILEAGE, the ECU would definitely throw a code. Go from there

Take a gun and shoot ur mecahnic.. Every time u start ur car, the ECU run a diagnostics of all the car systems and records a code when something is off.. Juat read the code, Then fix ur car. Its that simple

Got to give it to Honda,, u know they were the first with variable valve timing.. Everybody is just modifying it to suit their needs. I wouldnt say BMW has the best, it just suits their need. Infiniti calls it VVE-L ( variable valve event and lift) and BMW calls it VANOS.
All in all, Honda got the most advanced. BMW introduced theirs in 1992 while Honda introduced theirs in 1983

GOSHH... Nigerians know how to kill engines... NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER PUT WATER IN YOUR RADIATOR.. You put coolant.. There are the unversal green ones. Am pretty sure thats why 90% of cars in Nigeria overheat. The coolant is a lubricant and coolant combines and it increases the boiling point of water so it does not evaporate easily.
Engine maintenance 101. Flush out all the water in ur radiator and reservoir tank and put 50% antifreeze 50% water and ur overheating issues is gone..

cretin: as an auto vin report provider on nairaland..i quite agree with the 90% statistic given by bizbooks...i hv run thousands od vin reports..and more than 90% of them are salvage/junk/accidented..........looking at it from the economics point of view..u don really blame the car dealers...nigerians want to buy cars at the cheapest price price possible..i remeber a client telling me he has 2.3 million naira..and he wants a 2010 toyota camry!!..factoring in the exchange rate , freight n clearing cost..its impossible for any car dealer to bring in a clean car at such price...the only option is a junk/accidented car.

back to topic..an accidented car isnt so bad if the type of accident is stated/known....some accidents are quite cosmectic..but any car that has FRAME DAMAGE listed in the vin report is a big no no...this means that the chassis has been damaged..the car would hv stability n vibrational issues..

high mileage cars on the other hand is still dicey...cos a car with 150k miles that is well maintained with regular oil changes/maintainace is better than a similar car with 40k miles that wasnt well maintained...heard of a case where a lady didnt change her oil for more than 10k miles...n the oil dried up and the oil warning light came up...that was when she took the car to a service center!!..by then the engine was halfway gone.....the dealer adviced her to trade in the car and pick a new car..that the car will give her problems in the future........so any unlucky person who buys that car will surely be in soup...cos even though the mileage is low..the engine is gone........

toyota gearbox has a service life of about 300k from factory
honda has about 230k miles
nissan about 150k miles.

other componenets in the car hv service life like timing belt..oil pump...water pump etc

so buying any of these car models where the mileage is close to the above listed figures...then the possibilty of ur changing the gearbox is very high

U made a good point till you got to the point of gearbox.. Where did u get your stat from ?? I had a Nissan maxima that was 220,000 miles and I drive that car back and forth US and Canada.. Honda are known for bad gearboxes., it's so notorious its actually their downside.. I wonder how u guys come up with your figures ..
Seen bMw with 330,000 miles with original gearbox and engine , Chevrolet , ford .. It all depends . Seen corolla that needs engine change at 100,000 miles ..

Avalon is an UPPER VERSION of camry.. So it beats it in all ramifications. Better interior and everything.. You can still get a camry suit up to avalon level but it is still not an avalon.

I do not think the transmission is the reason why but rather on buyers perceptions of CVT. The problem with the torque converters on earlier muranos was a design flaw rather than as a result of the CVT unit itself. You remenber earlier CVTs has that drone sound which turns off some buyers. Most infiniti and pathfinder buyers like the conventional gear shift feeling which is not found in CVTs. It was a new technology and most buyers were not eager to embrace it. The CVT transmission is use in war tanks, so it is not a question of vehicle size.
You are right though. Our people back home are in LOVE with TOYOTA. it is TOYOTA OR NEVER.

For me, any would do. Maintenance is key to enjoying ANY car.

That's the problem with Nigerians , they don't maintain a car or the previous owner did not maintain the car properly and they expect it to last forever. Every car manufacturer has recommended maintenance schedule but we don't obey it and when things go bad , we say the car is not reliable. Agreed , some cars can take more abuse than others but maintenance is the key. I know a guy tha has a BMW 3 series with 600,000 km and it still drives good cus he maintained it .
Maintain your car and it will last a long time. Bad roads and bad fuel can screw up

For cost and availability of parts,Nissan(MURANO,MAXIMA,ALTIMA) and infiniti can assure of the high cost of parts,go to dealers here and get the parts and see for your self,Also,nissan tends to wear out after few years of usage compare to Toyota.I also have guys at ladipo that sell nissan parts and engine,you will bite your teeth seriously especially for 2003 and newer nissan products.

On Maintenance,Nissan came out to revisit their model by adding so much electro-mechanical device into their designs which makes an ordinary mechanic unable to fix.

On fuel efficiency,Nissan models are good but still cant be compared to toyota models with the same engine capacity.

This is just my contribution.

Nissan gives you more power per displacement than a similar Toyota. U want power , u lose fuel economy . Nissan are for drivers and Toyota are for people

Now u comparing altima with Camry lol.. If u want to drive , I mean, if u LOVE driving, u would not compare Camry and Altima . Altima v6 Is faster and sportier than Camry v6 , accord V6. Different types of cars for different folks

platinumricky: Some nissans such as the 1st generation murano and Xterra suv with the automatic transmission have had gearbox issues. i have personally seen an 04 infiniti Fx35 AWD (infiniti is nissan's up-market brand) with the aforementioned problem as well.
Some Nissan V6 engines (particularly the VQ series) have had issues as well.

The VQ series engine won WARDS top 10 engine 12 years in a row. Nissan V6 is still a benchmark for V6. Toyota had the oil sludge issue. It was a big mess for them that resulted in a class action suit. Stop listening to hersays and do a little research

Nigerians are still living on past glory. Every car manufacturer has stepped up their game including ford and Hyundai. It is a different ball game now . The notion that Toyota is more reliable than ford or Kia is by gone. Here in NA, consumers are demanding more from their cars. The days of toyota selling 300, 000 Camry a year is long gone and they admitted that too. Thee is more competition and reliability is same across the board. Buy a car u love, cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed .
The above is not true for very old cars but the newer ones are SAME reliability wise to Toyota

How does double silencers equate to bad fuel economy?? WOOWW.. How did u come up with that?? It does not come up to that, alot of things can cause bad fuel economy but having 2 resonators is not a reason why.letting it easy on the gas pedal will help your gas mileage

There can be someting wrong with your car. Car MPG is a very subjective issue, No 2 cars can give u the same mileage. Alot of factors determines the mileage u get

t2luv: Very good car. I think in US it is call Maxima. Change the oil every 3 months, and use a fuel injector cleaner once a month. You shouldn't have any problem. Then at 100,000 miles change the the fuel injector nozzles.

U dont need to change the fuel injector nozzle.. it is a waste of money. Never had a maxima i had to change the fuel injector nozzle. Most gas are blended with fuel injector cleaner so that too is not really necessary

t2luv: You dont know what you talking about. Double exhaust means the engine is breathing better than a single exhaust Car. The issue with Murano can be traced to badly design flaws. Putting an engine designed for a Sedan on a Crossover platform, then adding more weight on top. That is why the transmission is always going out on a Murano. Nissan should have put a 3.3L Pathfinder engine in the Murano. Nissan cars are very popular in US for one reason only, thy come with Timming Chain, and not Timming Belt. Trust me I know this cos I work with cars.

Are u being serious right now. The 3.5l engine was first installed in the 2002 nissan maxima then detuned into the Altima then banked for the RWD G35 and 350z and finally installed in the nissan quest.
You dont work with car cus if u do, u would know that nissan uses CVT transmission in the murano. Altima, Maxima and Murano SHARE THE SAME PLATFORM (D PLATFORM)
Now u saying that the weight of the car is the reason for a very bad CVT transmission . loll.. You forgot that nissan gave a 6yr warranty on the cvt transmission cus they belive it is that reliable... People buy Nissans cus it very reliable (me included), and the power band is unbelievable.
A V6 Nissan altima is faster 0-60 than a honda accord , toyota camry and acura tl. Nissans are fun to drive, Interiors are amazing.

platinumricky: Nissan VQ-V6s are nightmarish to fix when they have issues, their CVT transmissions (muranos often use this gearbox) are sometimes problematic.
But their halo car- the R35 Skyline GT-R is totally awesome...its worth killing for. *Evil Grin*

What you know about VQ .. I know that engine inside out. When nissan first brought it out in 95 nissan maxima, it was to die for. very smooth, economy of 4 cylinder in a v6. check ur facts boy, i am a nissan guy and i have owned 6 differnt nissans at some point and that engine is as reliable as it comes. You think it is easy to win WARDS TOP 10 BEST ENGINE 12 YEARS IN A ROW.

The thing is, Audi A8 generation FWD had V6 & V8. But they later realised the mistake & dropped the FWD V8 & continued with AWD V8 till date. I guess they couldnt break the record well, after all.

My Boy has a 98 cadillac Seville STS . The STS version comes with GM Northstar V8 engine AND IT IS FWD. ALL CADILLAC SEVILLE FROM 98-2005 WERE FWD. Some come in V6 OR V8 VERSION

FHEMMY, u know this things nah. Well Toyota is a safe bet more than the Honda . I still can't wrap my head around the fact that HONDA can't build reliable automatic transmission . This problem has been going on since the 90s. Either it is automatic transmission or head gasket problem in their Acura premium division.

Am looking at ur diagram and I think u have to do a complete swap.. Get another car and use the junk. If it is the solenoid that is messed up as u say,,The car dosent know how much exhaust gas to put back in the cylinders so now u have 2 extreme... Either ur car puts too little exhaust gas and u get bad mileage WHEN driving in city but good mileage when driving In highway or ur car puts too much and u get normal mileage in city driving and bad mileage in highway driving. Those are the 2 extremes when the the solenoid does not work...
The solenoid uses pressure , THrottle possition sensor , car load, rpm and other factors to determine how much exhaust gas had u have to return back to the cylinders. Normally more is returned in low load and on cold start up to reduce emission and less is returned on high speed .

Intake resonators are to mostly reduce intake noise .. They don't cause bad mileage , it gives ur car a growl when u step on the gas .. Mine in my car is removed and am running a stillen cold air intake . Some people claim u get better mileage cus u dont have restriction on air going into the engine . I didn't notice a big difference in mine..

If the catalytic converter is clogged , it will increase back pressure. The reason it is clogged is if you are running an rich mixture ( fuel and air) or sometimes bad gas. Cut it out and put a straight pipe. Ur HP will increase for sure . .. I will say u change your 02 sensor While u are at it .. Buy the generic one and use your old connector .bad egr can cause these problems but I doubt if it can be this bad..
Start with what ikenna says.. If u can't, do what I wrote above, the computer will relearn and ur mpg will improve but not to normal level..

Lets start with the basicss... why dont u tell us what u notice when u drive the car. Slow pick up?? stalling?? Very bad smoke on first start up? lets start with these ones cus 20 liters on the average for a 20km drive (Egbeda to Ikeja Airport) is a very serious drop in fuel economy.. When we add it with the 02 scanner, we all can get a better idea..

I worked in an auto shop in canada and we rarely get cars with this bad mileage but when we do , we fix everything the OBD2 scan says and send it to the dealer to reflash the ECU if the problem has not gotten better..

dashlinks: i used a 1998 accord wayback in 2005 and when i switched it in 2006 for a V6 2003 end of discussion, i asked myself what i was doing with those toys i used to drive, seriously when it comes to fuel consumption within the city, it depends on how u drive like someone earlier said and quite frankly when people say motor dey chop fuel, i just turn to my God and say Baba God please let the kinda reasoning poverty has caused this person's thinking not affect mine oh, c'mon its just like asking for a 4cylinder range rover, ferrari, maserati, bugatti,rolls royce, bentley etc, luxury cars dont come with toy engine,i would gladly take a v6 engine of any jap car than a more expensive 4cylinder anyday, besides check car sales websites, compare the costs of same cars with 4cylinder and 6cyl engines e.g the 08 accord, the v6 engines come about $4k-$5k+ more expensive than the v6 cos they are built to last much longer, they deliver the same performance and more than a 4cyl with more ease, its just like 4 horses and 6 horses doing same job, obviously the 4horses will retire earlier than the 6. In december i drove my 06 limited edition avalon to ekiti and the road was superb, freshly tarred and the car just took over with clocking 160 with the greatest of ease and i returned to lagos with a quarter tank, same level the 4cylinder 09 camry that we convoyed together made, so the fuel consumption is over rated. As for the gear box issues, a lot of users dont know how to maintain the gear systems, these new cars are more intelligent and they have specific gear oils, same as engine oils to use, engine oils differ in grade and viscosity, some cars require 5W engine oils and some others, its not just about my mechanic(who has no idea what the contents are) said super xhp is the best if u cant afford mobil 1, since the v6 eod, i have briefly used a 3.5ltr altima(which i had to quickly off-load), used a 2007 v6 accord before the avalon and now i drive an LX470 which is the first V8 i av used and i must say its been super fun, plus its a car with too much extras

The reason why people prefer 4 banger is fuel economy . 4 cylinder lasts as long as v6 if well taken care of. You all need to stop thinking that 4 cylinders don't make enough power. Wait till you drive Mitsubishi evolution with their turbocharged engines or Subaru wrx STI. Now that's a 4 cylinder that would make a v8 look childish. 300 Horsepower from a 4 cylinder ain't no joke

dashlinks: look this pic from my bro's 2001 bmw 740, that has done 250k miles , still doing 120 and still under 2rev/min, thia is a v8, a 4cylinder would be close to 3 or past doing this on an 11yr old car with 250k miles on the dash

Its aV8 so obviously the engine dosent have to spin that much.. That's why u have that rpm at 120km. What the 4 banger got on you is FUEL ECONOMY. Moreover 250,000km is not that much in a car .

Olubachar: My 98 model pathfinder consumes fuel like fire. This motor consumed 37 liters from Ibadan to Akure( 2hrs journey) and the car was toksly purchased some few months ago. I'm even afraid to purchase ''any'' V6 car again.

Your car uses nissan VG33EE. It is an iron block engine . No variable valve time timing or double overhead cam. So it is not very fuel efficient . And moreover pathfinder is very heavy and that's why u get very bad fuel economy . Engine technology and come a long way since 98. U can swap your engine for a vq35de found in murano, Altima , Infiniti g35. It depends on how much u love your car..
