Education › Re: 5 Boring Departments In Nigerian Universities by kawkab: 9:13am On Oct 15, 2015 |
Rapmoney: During my sojourn in the Ivory Tower, I was able to figure out that some departments didn't just host lively students and activities. News hardly came from such departments and it seemed these departments were not part of the university community! After visiting some Nigerian higher institutions of learning in recent times, I discovered that the 'boring' phenomenon still exists. Below are some of the departments :
1) Department of Religious Studies: often times when I walked passed this department to my faculty, I couldn't help but wondered whether it is a grave yard since the whole place would be so quiet. The students are not usually much too and they always have this facial expressions of 'Na wa...na me dey study this one'...'Abeg, I don tire for life sef'...'Na make e no be like say we no go school' . You hardly hear any campus news from this department too! I wonder what graduates from this department do because I haven't seen any of the religious studies graduate during my time yet!!!
2) Department of Agricultural Science: The value or importance of agriculture in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized but the way most Nigerian students see this course has made it to become such a boring department that most students on campus look down on with dismay! Most guys who find themselves in this department/faculty, sometimes, feel inferior to approach babes in departments/faculties such as Law and Medicine because they always erroneously think that the babe would look down on them! . Na Agric Faculty dey always carry last for my university faculty football championship competition! . That inferiority mentality still dey affect them!
3) Department of Philosophy: Another boring department! I once thought of students in this department having a quiet room where they sit and reason for hours as part of their semester exams!!! . I told a friend and he almost laughed his head off! . Na for this dept dem go tell you say the spirit of God dey everything, so you fit address a cup as God! It's such a quiet department.
4) Department of Secretarial Studies: I don't think most of the secretaries in many establishments studied this course to work as a secretary. This department is hardly known and heard of on campus. It is mostly patronised by a handful of rural girls from neighbouring communities who dress like Mary-Amaka!
5) Department of Geography/Regional Planning and Urban Development: Another boring department! I don't think they ever held any event such as departmental/award night till I left school! It is a nice course but boring department in most Nigerian schools!
In essence, I think it is the mentality of the Nigerian society that has 'inferiorized' (I wonder if such word exist in English) these departments and the students under them.
You can add yours! Please OP, you have to qualify what you mean by boring. The Nigeria mentality and the environment in which we live in is affecting us so badly that a lot of people tend to view things and make comments from a very myopic point of view. The view of most people is that if you are not in the Medical Sciences, Information Systems and Computing, Engineerin and Management Sciences then you are studying a good course or your course is boring. This is very far from the truth. I guess what you mean by boring is that such departments may not engage in too much social activities, events and extra curricular activities. Most times, it is because their student population is low and the work load is high. Some of the departments you mentioned needs serious reading and they are peopled by students that are not too socially inclined. For instance in this era of Local Based Services, GPS, Geoinformatics, habitat planning and liveability, GIS all over the world, you are saying the Geography and Regional Planning is a boring course. Agriculture and Bioresources Engineering is a course that would stay relevant for now and in the future. In this era of biodiversity, new agricultural methods, the ever increasing need for food for human sustainability, Agric Science would be quite relevant. Same applies to |

Education › Re: List Of Private Universities In Nigeria And Their School Fees by kawkab: 7:20am On Jul 30, 2015 |
zik4ever: People, let me make a contribution here. First I graduated from a federal government owned university (first generation) but then I think the standard of tuition and scholarship was higher than it is now -less 'sorting' of lecturers etc. There are still good public universities but I must tell you that some of these private universities are coming of age. For instance I don’t worship at Living Faith (Winners) but from the industry where I work (recruitment is very competitive), Covenant University is making a very strong showing. In fact, in the last 2-3 years, they have been displacing the likes of UI, FUTO in recruitment for the management sciences, arts, and social sciences. One of our recruiters was so shocked at the trend that he had to remark "there must be something they are doing there". I have colleagues whose children are there and I have interacted personally with a few of their graduates in the workplace -they hold their heads high and deliver! Now, I say all these not to advertise the school but to say, not all these private schools may be called "glorified secondary schools" anymore. I've heard good words about Babcock and even Afe Babalola (Law Faculty) and Landmark etc. I agree that the fees are relatively high of course but they have to pay their bills (staff salary etc) if they can build on the standards, it will help reduce capital flight abroad and even to nearby Ghana. Of course, they will be graduates from these schools that also don’t measure up. I am only cautioning us not to be too dismissive, things are changing in the real world -recruiters put you in problem solving and critical thinking situations during interviews and those who are mentored to "think out of the box" typically come up tops. If you can’t afford these private schools, by all means even if you are in an uknown university where strikes are frequent or what may be called a "mushroom" school, please develop yourself; read hard and wide... you can still make it. It takes more than having a certificate or the name of your school or how high or low your school fees is. God bless you. your response is most objective. thank you. |

Politics › Buhari’s Disappearing Presidency By Okey Ndibe by kawkab(op): 4:54pm On Jun 25, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari is dangerously close to leaving Nigerians disillusioned. Forget about his failure (as at this writing) to announce his cabinet, bad as it is. For me, the deeper disappointment lies in the near-absence of the president’s voice from the national conversation.
Okey Ndibe Let’s begin, however, with the least important element of Mr. Buhari’s so far lack-luster Presidency. It’s approximately three months since Nigerians voted for Mr. Buhari, on his fourth try, to be their president. By any objective measure, three months is more than enough time for a man who sought power with a certain persistence to figure out his cabinet.
The president’s explanation for his tardiness in unveiling a cabinet is two-fold. One is that his predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan, had been less than fully cooperative with his transition team. The second: that he wants a thorough background check done on potential ministers to save himself the chore of firing ministers shortly after nominating them.
There are, I suggest, two other—perhaps even more important—factors that Mr. Buhari chose not to name. One has to do with Nigerians’ (unreasonably) high expectations from the Buhari administration. Aware that his cabinet will be the most closely scrutinized of any recent president, perhaps Mr. Buhari has succumbed to a sort of partial paralysis or suspended animation.
Of equal significance is the impression that President Buhari has yet to find an effective formula for resolving the conflicting demands and expectations of various factions within the fractious family of his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). In Nigeria and elsewhere, the disposition of ministerial posts is an instrument for rewarding various “stakeholders” who contributed, in one way or another, to a political victory. President Buhari’s unusual and bizarre string of IOUs includes real or perceived debts to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governors Bola Tinubu and Rotimi Amaechi.
Leadership involves a measure of deliberation, prudent and pragmatism. Yet, even when we allow for Mr. Buhari’s official explanation, the grand scale of public expectation, and the intractability of intra-party squabbles, one insists that the president’s snail pace is troubling. It has left some of his most fervent fans scratching their heads, scrambling for answers.
In the end, it should not matter whether Mr. Jonathan cooperated with his successor’s transition team or not. Candidate Buhari presented himself as the answer, the epitome of change, as a man capable of addressing Nigeria’s perennial problems. Nigerians subsequently hired him, in a veritably historic election, to be the chief minder of their business of state. It behooves the president to find ingenious ways of doing his job without making excuses. He may well take off in the near future, and soar as a leader. For now, however, one finds no justification for his inordinate delay in achieving a goal as basic as composing a cabinet. The delinquency suggests a failure to prepare for the task ahead.
And I say this as somebody who was on record as expecting little from a Buhari Presidency. I always stipulated that the singular gift that the man would bring to office was a modest lifestyle and a legacy of self-restraint in the department of material accumulation. I was certain that a country like Nigeria, deeply deformed by its elite’s greed, could use a man of Mr. Buhari’s ascetic temperament. But I was just as certain that the challenge of leading a complex country demanded more, far more, than a man who would not lose his head in the presence of lucre.
That Mr. Buhari, a serial seeker of the Nigerian presidency, has squandered three months since his election, a month since his inauguration, without naming his cabinet, points, quite simply, to a level of unpreparedness. And if our brand new president is unprepared in personnel matters, how is he to tackle the weightier issues of unemployment, infrastructural dilapidation, terrorism, a shambolic healthcare system, educational crisis, and electric power woes?
Which brings me to a more disquieting aspect of the fledging Presidency. Mr. Buhari’s handlers would wish to frame his disappearance from public discourse as evidence of a deliberative cast of mind. But one must ask: Is there no aspect of Nigeria’s malaise that the president has figured out a set of proposals? Is there no area where he feels the need for urgency?
It’s remarkable that, in one month as president, Mr. Buhari has not laid out a single policy proposal on any of the major national issues that concern the millions who voted for him. He has not specified even the outline of what he intends to do about Nigeria’s educational system, which has been on life support for some time. He has not defined a pathway to a healthcare system worthy of the name. With the price of crude oil still relatively low, the theft of Nigerian crude at an all-time high, and crude oil exports at wishy-washy levels, Nigerians must gird themselves for a long spell of hard times. Yet, our president has not made any pronouncement about the shape of things to come. He has not cared to remind Nigerians that the days of dependable oil revenues are, possibly permanently, behind us.
In the Nigerian imagination, President Buhari’s antipathy to corruption was supposed to strike fear in the hearts of past plunderers and stay the hands of current custodians of the public trust. Yet, Mr. Buhari has not revealed any strategy for combating corruption, or recovering hundreds of billions of dollars stolen by public officials, including many of his APC cohorts. I daresay that his silence on corruption is the biggest letdown, so far, of the Buhari Presidency. If care is not taken, the idea will soon gain ground that it’s business as usual, as far as corrupt practices go.
In a rare soul-baring moment, President Buhari confessed that his age, 72, is an impediment to his effectiveness. It was a devastating confession, one that Nigerians had better reckon with as we re-calibrate our fantasies about the new president’s superhuman powers. Those who saw in Buhari the answer to all questions having to do with Nigeria must adjust their expectations quotient.
The question is, when did Mr. Buhari realize that age would be a debilitation? If he felt that age or infirmity would hamper him, why did he present himself for office? Was he not always aware that, even for those who view the Presidency as a four-year ticket to endless jollification, the office poses arduous challenges?
One has the sneaking suspicion that age may not be the sole issue here. As I proposed before the elections—and now reiterate—both the APC and the dismissed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are ideologically indistinguishable. The drama in the National Assembly, where the PDP essentially stole the APC’s thunder in determining who and who will shape Nigeria’s legislative agenda, has demonstrated this essential fact. Nigerians must hope that Mr. Buhari not been hemmed in by forces he has little power to shake.
Time will tell. But this much one can claim with confidence: the first month of the Buhari Presidency has been far, far from inspiring. http://saharareporters.com/2015/06/24/buhari’s-disappearing-presidency-okey-ndibe |

MizMyColi: I just downloaded, read and took a screenshot of all 20 pages of said APC roadmap.
I would be quite callous to expect them to deliver on all those. Those were actually written and graphicalized by good copywriters who had very vivid and idealistic sense of imagination.
I have always praised the PR and Media arm of APC, I hope they come up with some form of abracadabra to turn off to an appreciable level, the level of expectations Nigerians have bestowed on the incoming government.
My heart goes out to Buhari, who might not be able to handle these pressures and when they start pouring in, really I fear for his health.
Why has Osinbajo gone silent?
Why are there more news filtering in on Jonathan's loss and his campaign funds. Could this be a propaganda to quell the masses demand for 5k and free meals with the excuse that Jona finished all our money on elections (which might as well be a lie)?
Why is Buhari so party conscious, this is the same path Jona took (trying to placate everyone) and lost popularity with most of the populace.
The social media painted to me, an image of a man who is ruthless, who takes no prisoners....having read his recent interview, I must say this, I am not impressed, I have to point out though, that he made some statements that showed his selflessness and will to do the Nation good.....I hope his willpower sustains that.
Well, these are mostly random thoughts and I hope things pan out for the better in the near future. Despite my convictions about the APC, a huge part of me still looks forward to a better Nigeria, a changed Status quo.
So help us God. Excellent and Objective post |

We had Evans/Evan Enwerem, Chuba Okadigbo and Anyim Pius Anyim as senate president. How did that benefit the common igbo man on the street I always believe in letting the best man do the job irrespective of his party, tribe or religion As long as the president performs his federal functions in the states everybody will benefit, irrespective of the ethnicity of the senate president. Thank you for your post in OBJ 8 years as President, the SE occupied the senate Presidency, it did not translate to any tangible benefit to the SE. David Mark was the Senate President for the past 8 years of what benefit was his tenure to the North Central. Though D. Mark was able to influence the siting of a University teaching hospital i Oturkpo. Please note that in Jonathan's administration the SouthWest was supposed to occupy the office of the Speaker of House of Reps but the ACN members of the house connived with some elements from the North to deny Hon. Mulikat Akande the slot. So it is not GEJ makng that the SW did not occupy any principal posistion in the legistlature. Moeeover I don't think the SE needs any of these position to do well SEastheners are survivalist so they would always look for a way out. richyblink1: Let me be straight with you. No woman(even your mother) will appreciate anybody coming to take an item from her home without permission from them. Yes she is your mother as well as her mother in law, but her authority is in her husband's (your father's) house.
The right thing to do is to politely ask for those pictures and if your wife refuses, she should have allowed you to come back without confronting your wife. So far as I am concern, a house is made up of a man and his wife. Every other persons are intruders no matter their relationship to you or your wife.
The deed has been done already. Get your wife to apologize by sending your mother an SMS since she won't want to see her. Then look for a way they can see that's after your mother must have been calmed so your wife can ask for her forgiveness.
Then trace the root cause of their issue and ensure it is resolved amicably. They are the 2 most important people in your life, and as such you can't chose between them.
As for your mother suggesting you ask your wife to leave, NO WAY! Stand your ground now or you will have your family running your home. Equally endeavor to make it clear to your mother or any other extended family that they should clearly ask for permission (from you or wify) before collecting anything from the house. My brother kindly follow the advice given above. IMHO your mother has no right to collect anything from your house without taking permission from your wife. If your wife refused, she should then wait to discuss the matter with you. Trying to take those picture forcefully shows she has no regards for your wife and respect for you. Your wife on the other hand should not have retaliated or fought with your mother. But I guess that the acrimony between them have been allowed to fester for long. What is the role of the other two ladies around. What is their role in the whole matter. I believe when the quarel started they should have intervened to stop it from degenerating into a full blown fight, meaning that they were in consort with your mother. Going forward try to make your wife apologise to your mother, first through SMS. Then by proxies and sending people. If possible involve members of her church or mosque. Make your wife buy her a gift (something that she likes). Then when the soft landing have been created take your wife to see her personally. After this talk to your mother. Make her realise that on no account must she attack your wife verbally and physically as this amount to direct disrespect for you. Limit her coming to your house. No matter what you do dont succumb to the blackmail of sending away your wife. When you do that your have established two things, 1. they (your mother and family) would always control your life. 2. your life would be completely messed up. Even if you marry a new wife your mum have already established a precedent for controlling her. then think about your children, if you send their mother away, their life would never be the same again. |

If the country where you just graduated were to be spending money recklessly you wouldn't have any university to go now. Please before you make comments like check the political history of Nigeria. Ete was setup by Dimeji Bankole, Farouk Lawan and Co. She was later freed of the offences she was accused of. Those that took over from spent more that she initially signed for the repair and renovation of the house and they also bought more cars. |
Jokes Etc › Re: Read What This Guy Told A Friend That Asked Him For Money by kawkab: 11:42am On Mar 21, 2015 |
Lets look at it from this points. 1. It may be that the guy that is asking to be borrowed money once had good money on him and refused to use it wisely rather prefering to enage in frivolities and extravagance.
2, it may also be that any time he is borrowed money, paying back is a big issue.
Thus now that he is broke, his friend may see it as an oppurtunity to learn that when you have money, you dont spend all. Hence the blunt reply. |

Mcslize: Thanks Bro for ur encouraging words. I would love to have the document. Send it to my email Thanks Mcslize: I want to share my experience with ''Forever Living Product Company'' it is a great company but it is not as rosy as people paint it to be. I met a friend some what May 2014 which through an exchanged of pleasantries lead to letting me know about the company which he told me he was in a managerial position as at the time we met. He told me how people were being paid huge amount of money every month and all that. For the fact that I told him I was looking for a job made him to invite me to one of the forever living product seminars which I attended. If anyone attend forever living product seminar 1 will have no other option than to join. Everything will be explained as simple as ABC making it all rosy but not as rosy as one would think if only one would also see other challenges attached to it. In the seminar my thinking faculty was formatted that immediately I left I started thinking of how to get the money to start which my topline asked me to bring 70k for a start. I couldn't know how to get that amount of money as a student. The only option left for me then was to borrow the money. From who? I asked myself. I only had one person my father. What will I tell him? Another thought came. I will pressurise him to loan me the money. I finally did pressurise him and transfered 70k to my account which he borrowed from their coorporative with the mind that I will pay back in a month time. Immediately I received the alert I called my topline about my break through in convincing my Dad to send me the money. My topline felt so happy about it for the fact that if I register the following day as his downline he would be rewarded with 25k as a manager as a result, he reassured me that I would pay the money back within a month time as he would be assisting me to sell the products and would help me to register people under me as well. I believed him after making those statements and felt confident to start. Atleast my confidence was 100% with those words. Things later went sour after I had started. I began to see that it was not as the way I was made to believed. There're alot of challenges. Challenge of how to invite people to seminar, challenge of how to get people to register under u started to be my biggest challenges. All day long I was be in the street inviting people to seminar. I was talking to over 50 people about Forever Living Product company , the effectiveness of the company products and bogus rewards one would get from the company. I normally have a book where I write down people's name and phone numbers with the mind that they would come for the seminar. I also made sure that I place a call to all the people I invited to the seminar but to my greatest surprise non would show up out of the 50 people invited. They always complain of not having chance. Some even went ahead to tell me that their husbands won't allow them to attend and so many other complaint. I felt so discouraged flashing back to the money I borrowed with all the mouth I made to my Dad of paying back the emoney. If no one register under me that means I won't be paid. Even the products I bought with the 70k ,I couldn't sell them. Selling them became a problem as many people will always complained of being too expensive. I moved from street to street, shop to shop Hawking the products and each day returned back home without being able to sell a single product. Whomever I talked to about the products always complain of the price of the products even though the products are very effective and good. Couple with the fact that Nigerians love cheap things even if the thing doesn't work so, bringing something with higher price is a thorn in the flesh to them. I felt more and more discouraged as the month proceed ed faster. Time is not on my side to sell the products & refund the money to my Dad to give back to their coorporative. My Dad had already started calling asking me 'how far I had gone?' I couldn't cope as I knew there was no way I could pay the money as I had not been able to register anybody nor sold any product. I even started using the products as I couldn't sell them. But was still punctual with seminars despite all my challenges. I started disturbing my topline to abide by his promise to me. He affirmed his promise and help me to sell few products but there was still much remaining to be sold. I kept disturbing him as he had a way of convincing people to buy the products. The disurbance became too much & he told me he can't continue selling my products as he also have his to sell. My discouragement rose to 90% and along the line I stopped attending seminars. That was how I ported out a month later as I couldn't register anybody. And in the end I felt sick cuz of the anxiety of the 70k my Dad borrowed for me from their coorporative. He later used his money to pay back before he loose a son. Lesson: FLP company is a great company but you must be good at convincing people to register and buy your products. please I would like to have the document and also work with you. kindly send to mytraininglist@gmail.com thanks |
