They won via penalty shoot-out(11-10) against Ghana without Abedi Pele in the final
Didn't they win the tourney?

Thinking about it now. . . . . .I think they were slightly better than us.
Joel Tiehi and Abdoulaye Traore were superb in that tournament.
They took Ghana apart.
I say it again,no team was better than the SE squad in 94 in the whole of Africa, The 5th best team and second most entertaining team in the world? grin
The same Ivorian team Okocha was toying with their the midfielders?

Yet our team A lost to them in Abidjan in the WCQ of 1993.
Sauron if you indeed watched this match you wouldn't even bring this match up.Isn't that the match that made Siasia became a persona non grata in Clemence's team.Refusing to pass to a free Yekini when they were both free on goal.We so much out-played them they resorted to jazz  grin grin grin

What am i saying sef,so what team eventually qualified for the World Cup and went on to do great things(by Africa's standard). That same 94 team that was almost running away with victory against eventual finalist Italy?

Mind you i ain't restricting this argument to just Tunis 94.

tkb417:
the 92 team were lucky (Ghana were better; even Nigeria woulda beaten them)
the 94 team were class and were obviously the best team of the tourney

they woulda massacred Zambia in the finals
Lucky? How so?that team was efficient abeg.

And did you just say the Ivorians were better than even us in 94?I laugh in Amuneke grin
That SE 94 team was brimming with so much talent we could parade a team B that will beat most of African teams.Forget what those emotionally charged Zambians did to us late on in the final.

And in 96 when we could have won the ACN easily, what did the googled one do? cry

BTW,wetin u dey do for Dakar?

Till date. . . . . .That is the best ACN match i have ever watched.
The brand of attacking football displayed by both teams was WORLD CLASS.
How were we played off the park in that match. That has to be one of Okocha's best performances for us(a la against the Azzuri's in USA 94)during his playing career.I still can't forget his great pass that culminated in Iroha's goal.

The Yeo Martial tutored side of Senegal 92 were more efficient that the 94 team man.

Of course the semi final is our birth right, just like the bronze. . .init? So why is anyone surprised we won  tongue

That said, why it is easy to castigate the whole team,i think a stand out performance by Enyeama and Shittu saw us through. The midfield was so static until the introduction of Ayila.I am still at sea over why we can't have a Etuhu/Ayila,Mikel and Kalu midfield. undecided With that i think there will be fluidity as against the slow what obtains with these present personnels.

And why do we still use Yakubu as a striker when it's obvious he's gat the mind of a slow-poke.Martins' pace is at least enough to give defenders worries while all Yak does is "model"on the field  grin

Nice victory guys but it is not uhuru yet.  cool

Rasputtin,
Why on earth are you appraising the efforts of those full backs with little effort going forward and poor first touch. undecided

Anyway Song and Eboue are back in the fold and it means solidity in the mid of the pack and good "option" across the field respectively.

Dr Kitaun:
@Kay

tell urself the truth, isnt it preposterous by any standard to be putting in view UECL matches to be played in over 3 weeks time as against a match we needed to win as a matter of strictly knock-out basis ?
Those were my thoughts not Wenger's but then no one can deny a lot of permutation and combination plays in coaches mind when it comes to fixtures.Injuries, tiredness, and other factors determine who and what happens on the field of play and all what not.I say it again, let us assume we won today's match,we would have been up against Man City few days to our UCL match,it is no rocket science that we will play a weakened team still against a City team that will be up for the competition.

I am not saying it is acceptable to gamble but let's get some perspective here,Wenger wouldn't change over-nite will he?

considering the physicality involved ?
Were we really bullied? It was more of a technical haranguing him to me.Stoke never allowed us time on the ball(same way Everton played against us at the Emirate)and their prowess was always going to be a threat.

how can WENGER even try the rubbish he did today ?
His decision not to play Arshavin in the S/F last season takes the cake.He has his own grand plan that is riling. For all the bollocks that old-git called Myles writes week in week out,he already opined this last week.

Wenger is a f.ucking retard to continue gambling away at the expense of winnable games . . .
embarassed   embarassed

Fabianski is wack . . .in fact Aiyenugba or even retired Baruwa would have done better embarassed
Believe me i do not mind us having Raymond King or David Ngodigha manning the post. The crazy thing is,save for Mannone who i think will get better with time, none of our GK fills me with hope nor joy.I already predicted this to a mate during the pre-season;that the GK position may be our archilles this season.I wish i can be proved wrong.

why roll out a disjointed defence ? whats the point playing Sol and Silvestre together ? 2 old men ?
You elucidated in your past post that Gallas has been playing with injury, and with Vermaleen having taken part in virtually all our matches this season,i understand him wanting to rest them.Where i have grudges is his not having Senderos in his plan at all and giving agent Silvestre a chance.

whats the explanation that Silvestre is still an Arsenal player and Senderos was allowed to move to Everton ? shocked shocked
This is GROSS!

isnt that reeking of some deep french sh.it ? whats with all this beef ?
Flamini is French and he left! cool
Viera is French and is not back inspite of that clamour for his return. So too his Henry. huh
Sol Campbell just made Wenger rescind his policy of not re-signing players who were with us and he doesn't have no francophone lineage undecided

I have said it over and over again . . .SILVESTRE IS BAD LUCK !!! HE IS JUST AN AGENT TO BRINGV MORE MISERY TO THE CLUB !!!
grin  grin I will like to know what his faults were today though. Our loss today wasn't even because of the so called old men,but the inexperienced lads who were not just up for it.

Coquelin was almost up to the task though Etherington was by far the terror in chief alongside Sidibe and Fuller, yet big bros goes ahead and removes him exposing that flank the more . . .how on earth does AW reason at times ? shocked
Wenger's undoing was expecting a teenager to switch role with alacrity.Eastmond was doing a decent job in the midfield until he was switched to the RB.For an inexperienced and developing lad, that is asking too much.I wasn't surprised with his shabiness that culminated in the 3rd goal.

Denilson was rubbish all game long and couldnt even impose his presence amongst non-regulars . . .how sad sad
Denilson thrives when he plays alongside a SOLID performer a la Song. He's at most a squad player.

Fab cry cry WE WILL MISS U . . .cos its really looking more like this guy wont stay cry
cry  cry

Mr Wenger does a Mourinho on us and does the unthinkable, brings on 3 players at a go huh RIDICULOUS !!!
Didn't he do almost(bringing in 2 players) same against Westham and it paid off?

Arshavin, Eduardo and Ramsey were all useless as they would have been better off left at home than get on the field to show how ludicrious expectations of them unduly were angry
Arshavin. . .  lipsrsealed
Eduardo? huh
Ramsey showed glimpses i think.

All in all,i am looking forward to the game Cameroon has against Egypt tommorow as we've only got one SONG.

@Kay

u dont feel less gutted ? what gives u the assurance that AW would not allow lightning abi na thunder strike on the same spot again ?

I mean . . .did we really have any excuse losing to Stoke City ? shocked
Of course with a UCL match to be played immediately after the fifth round of matches in the FA cup( we would have been playing Man City @ their stadium),i am cock sure Wenger would have fielded a young team that would have been decimated anyway, thus my stance.

Do we have any excuse?Of course no but then by virtue of our paper-thin squad(no thanks to our pasta legged players),i think we only stand any chance in the league and UCL  if we are involved in lesser competitions.

I really do not blame Wenger for the squad he puts out today considering the run of matches coming up.

So now we have Eboue back, and hopefully Song by tommorow night. grin

After looking up who Stoke got in the 5th round(Man City in Manchster),i can't but feel less gutted that we are out.Bearing in mind the 5th round of matches come up few days before the Porto match. That said,we have no time to think about this loss,i hope it doesn't knock off the feel-good factor that we presently enjoy though

Next up his O'Neil boys at Villa Park and anything but 3 points wouldnt be good enough. So bad Diaby is out cry

This Zambian keeper should be shot in the head. . .

Culled this from a forum about Cesc and it is not far from the truth at all.

Brilliance, that's what it is. Just plain and simple brilliance. Every single thing about him is brilliant nowadays. He's brilliant in the defence, brilliant in the attack, brilliant at going past his man, brilliant at picking out a pass, brilliant at making a crucial challenge at the right time. Brilliant at scoring goals, brilliant at creating goals. Brilliant at keeping his temper under control. He's grown into one of the most complete midfielders I've seen. It's the kind of guy you build a team and a philosophy around.
The enboldened is why i love the dude more.Any other player would have reacted to Taylor's mauling but Cesc kept his cool.Such a matured player for his age.

How the phuck did we manage a clean sheet!? Some of the defending was comical. . . It's easy to blame traore but to be fair to him he was isolated 99% of the time. A better team would have put 9 past Almunia today grin
Bolton was wasteful, especially Taylor with some unpardonable misses. That said, the major reason there was immense pressure on the defence today was porous midfield.Coupled with that fact is that Traore decided to continue his woeful streak from the Everton game. The way he was chinkoed throughout the game was atrocious.

Diaby also refused to play with a Eastmond on his first start. It was expected that Eastmond will have the "big-game"jitters,more so as he got the nod cos of Nasri injuries. The way Diaby played so far away from him make him so exposed and i must commend he showed a glint of composure(at a point asking for the ball) inspite of the consistent pressure.

Cesc was immense. . . no surprise there.

With the flood-gate of goals at Stamford today,i am looking beyond the 6-points and expecting a high scoring victory.I will really like us to be ontop with our one game more than the Chavs by upturning their goals advantage at the end of Wed's game.

With Ramsey and Denilson out for tommorow, guess we will see either of Nasri and Rosicky pulled to the midfield(i will prefer Nasri cos of his tenacity).Rosicky tend to lose the more often these days without tracking back and it will be distrastrous for him to be doing that very close to the defence against a Bolton team that may be psyched up by the "new manager syndrome"".

@Kit
Sol is a welcome back development @ least we both agreed on that, better than signing rejects from our rivals no matter the way we look at it.I took a bone about that cos you termed people who have reservations about his coming back "ïngrates".If it is all about applauding the "comebacks" of the invincibles, maybe we should bring Cygan back grin tongue

as per Adebayor, whether he poured shyte on an Arsenal fan or ran scornfully in front of Arsenal fans is irrelevant to me . . .he is an entertainer and u guys need to know this about him, to me I will say he is doing what he has to do to stay up there, he is a media fave anytime anyday, his packaging is unique to him, by the time he is injured or his legs cant carry him again he wont quickly fade away like some African players who didnt know how to hug the klieglights same with Drogba do u still wonder where Yekini is today ?
I think i agree with Muki tongue But then rather than attach the prominence of chaps like Manu,Drog et al to thier media savvy and packaging, internet and the advent of blogging has really played a part. Now it's more of what you do off the pitch and "reality shows".I wish the older generations of footballers who puts in more effort into their onfield performance had this opportunity really.

@Kay

I thought some people said Song's departure for the competition wont affect us undecided
It will be fool-hardy to undermine Song's contribution to our midfield this season.I make bold to say he's the only irreplaceable entity in this team. That was made obvious with the way Fellani bossed our remaining mildfielders @ the Emirate. While Gallas and Vermaleen impulsively turned into CFs on the day,i am sure Song would have been sane enough to wait back and do the dirty jobs and break up opponent's play.

not to talk of the Sol talk that keeps making me feel Arsenal fans pan out as being ingrates atimes . . .how many of our players have won anything in their careers ? AW now brings back a proven winner and some feel he isnt worth the ish . . .he might not ave the speed, but do u buy experience in the market ? undecided
Ingrates? Sol had a personal problem then.Even one if his mates(can't remember who now) lend credence to this.Isn't it Sol the drama queen that walked off a game at half time in Upton Park?Sol who left us to go ply his trade in a newly formed nation called Pompey? undecided I agree experience can't be bought in the market but Silvestre is an experienced and proven winner too but  lipsrsealed  grin I am not against the "short term panacea"personally since Djorou will be back before the season runs out and i feel we surely need a cover for our CBs.

BTW did you say once a gooner always a gooner about Manu's teeshirt gaffe? grin If being  a gooner is doing an Usain Bolt across the field to celebrate infront of people who once sang your praise then  lipsrsealed

That said,Diaby should share DM role with Ramsey on Sunday with Cesc right in front of them i.e we have a 3-man AM against a Bolton that will rely on physicality and ball-hoofing.I doubt it will count though,if Diaby can be told to shed his attacking toga and up his positional awareness defensively.I saw a bit of that(albeit shabbily) against Everton when he came back to get the ball off their attackers during one of their consistent forrays into our half.

I have not seen enough of Arshavin this season compared to the way he lit up the team when he arrived in the winter.I know the attacking role tend to limit his spark off late,but does that still explain the misplaced passes and disinterested attitude sometimes?He seems to always want to play with Cesc too  undecided OK Cesc is back Assasin,give em scorcher! cool;

Since it's the season for prayers and prophesy, can some one help me with these prayer points;a loss for Cameroon and less scampering by Almunia since Davies is in town. grin

Always a gooner  cool
