Business / Re: Will A Large Supermarket Thrive In Nigeria? by kazey(m): 5:29am On May 03, 2008
waleleader:

its a simple business idea, buy in bulk, sell in retail. if i sell MILO/ Bournvita for N5 lesser than its normal price at Yaba market in a trendy shopping mall, people will come to me instead of the market.

This indicates you don't understand the model of hypermarkets. The hypermarket model relies on suppliers, and only provides warehousing and sales automation and marketing. The hypermarkets do not invest in inventory, rather they help suppliers sell their inventories. The price are cheaper compare to local stores because its the supplier providing the inventory and they rely on volume sales, hence economies of scale applies.

Its not a simple model, that anybody that thinks he or she can run a business would be able to do. Do you remember Ames stores in the USA, they were as big as Walmart, and was a twin of Walmart in returns, but where are they today? This is considering, that this guys knew exactly what they were doing and not asking in forums how to go about it or how to do it, or whether it would be successful. They knew the business.

As someone said earlier, stay away from businesses you know nothing about.
Business / Re: Aliko Dangote Ranked #2 In World's Wealthiest Blacks by kazey(m): 12:26pm On Apr 30, 2008
ALAS, some people actually think that every philanthropist should publicize his or her contributions to the world. Dangote surely gives back one way or the other, perhaps not for the public eye or tax deductibles and I must say, its not your place to judge him.

Adverts / Re: Looking For Partners For My New It Tech Concept, should Get 3 Branches In 2yrs by kazey(m): 10:39am On Apr 28, 2008
I have a few questions for you, do you have any customer already? A customer that is ready to buy your products? What do need a business partner for?

This looks like a POS system, and how do banks, oil company's fit in to use your product? I am bit confused with functionality vs target market here?
Business / Re: Funding For A Project.have U Any Idea? by kazey(m): 4:26am On Apr 28, 2008
Kindly state the business, if you already have competitors and why should investors finance you rather than your competitors.
Business / Re: How Do I Start Up A Business With 700,000 As A Graduate by kazey(m): 4:23am On Apr 28, 2008
Save it in the bank and get a Job and enroll in a part-time business startup course or something.

I encourage everybody in this thread to get the Book E-myth revisited, why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it, by Micheal E Gerber. I am saying this because, I am little bit a disturbed about, how many, of the posters in this thread write about businesses etc as if businesses are a play in the park. Money is involved here. Kindly get the recommended book, its a must read for small business owners or the like minds.

I do think that the best approach to a thread like this would be, listing down business problems that need solution in your neighborhood, school or even work place rather than just business ideas that you have seen someone else doing,

Most Nigerian small businesses primarily fail because they try to copy what someone else is doing. Mind you I am not talking about perfecting it, or differentiating it. Please suggest ideas that are problems not ones that have solutions already implemented in the market.

I am ready to invest in any structured idea, that does not cost more than a million naira, with a ROI of at least 1.5 years and a positive NPV. A well structured business plan must be written, and you must be ready to employ someone to work in the business not you becoming the technician, the manager and the entrepreneur at the same time. That is I don't want someone that has a business idea that wants to work in the business rather than working on the business.

Webmasters / Re: Virtual Server Vs Dedicated Server. by kazey(m): 6:36pm On Apr 16, 2008
syskay:

It means you are not alone on the box because the server resources (especially processor) are rationed between all the users.

Yes but servers used for VPS usually have a very high spec, e.g quad processors, 8GB + rams, remote mysql and tunings etc. It really depends, but as far as i know, dedicated servers for personal use, especially for just one service is just a waste of money, except you get them really cheap, but hec that comes with a price too.
Webmasters / Re: Virtual Server Vs Dedicated Server. by kazey(m): 3:10pm On Apr 16, 2008
I believe you are not sure, because you do not need any. Frankly speaking, the services you require to be able to make use of your software has minimum requirements, and i think you should be aware of that.

But if we are talking about hosting sharepoint services, you need a minimum of a vps server, and not just any, a well configured one to meet the softwares requirement.

Can't people have marriage and not have kids? Can't they adopt? I really don't understand the way the average Nigerian think. I am really shocked.

If you love her, go ahead and marry her, you can always adopt if you choose not to bear your own kids for the known medical reasons. And what the hec does God have to do with this situation?

talking about this
because php runs 70% web it doesnt mean its good enough for real engineering. try to answer this.
Could Sergey Brin and Larry Page build Google with php ?? what of Gmail can you build that with php and have such ease of use, what of google docs and spreadsheeth.

Well facebook.com and yahoo.com are php, do you know the difficulties involved in scalling the server farms.
php is good for startups because its cheaper to run but in the future you have to change to something more robust like java or C#.

You don't know what you are talking about, and because of that I wont waste my time explaining the dynamics of programming languages, and how they are used for different purposes etc.

Depends on the industry you are in smiley. Nairahost for example relies on referral strategy, hence we don't advertise besides via forums. If you are able to tell me what industry you are in, we could be able to find an effective marketing strategy for you.

Do not deal with anybody that is not willing to pay in full for whatever fees you requested. Its as simple as it is, don't ship products if you don't have your cash in hand.

Webmasters / Re: Website Review, Anyone? by kazey(m): 5:49pm On Mar 27, 2008
Hmm na wa o. The most intriguing thing about some of this posters on this thread, is they actually don't run a biz, in fact some never did, I guess all they are prophesying was read on another website or one book in the darkest part of my grand fathers antique library.
TV/Movies / Re: What Is Your Favourite TV Series? by kazey(m): 10:24am On Mar 27, 2008
I am going to list a few that are worth mentioning, I think i have watched almost all highly rated tv series,

The sopranos was good
Heroes - hmm after season 1, i wasn't so impressed,. I am still yet to start watching season 2, even though i have a few episodes, I think it is an over-rated show
24 - can wait for tony almeida to be the bad guy
prison break - turning slow
Jericho - extremely good, but under-rated
Lost - turning out good, after a boring start, the way the director presented the dimensions especially in the 5th episode of season 3 is awesome.
Californication - awesome especially the pilot, in the church cheesy
Dexter - extremely good especially the way they rationalized serial killing
Journeyman - Getting tiresome, needs some wheel re-inventing on the plots, for example trying to visit the power behind the time travel would help out etc
The wire - was good with Avon Barksdale, Stringer and all where the roles, but died after stringer died, I think introducing the Marlow character was a mistake
Desperate housewives - hmm got bored of it, the series has lost its story, they should have wrap it up at season 2.
Moonlight - Too slow, its just like the failed blade series, vampire movies just don't play well in series. Well maybe its me considering I didn't even dig Angel.
Boston Legal - its intellectually packaged with humorous plots, that leaves the viewer both happy and stimulated.
House- Dr house is just haha, my type, and no, I ain't queer, I love women cheesy
The unit- When i am bored, this is what i watch. I am still yet to finish, because I am taking my time, in season 2 currently.

I am a series addict, I have a lot of collections, but I would say this; the best series I have watched so far is Rome 1 and 2. The Classic story is delivered with a spice of modern directing. The series is incredibly well directed, the plot are awesome, the murders gruesome, the sex careless, and the climax incredible !! its just the best series out there.

I just downloaded Season 1 of Amsterdam, I am still yet to watch it, but the reviews makes me feel, it would be worthwhile.
