Nairaland GeneralSoldiers Clean Up Akwa Ibon Market by Kiddo01(op): 5:17am On Nov 01, 2019
The Commander of the 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, on Thursday, led officers and men of the command to clean up the Akpandem Market in Uyo as part of activities marking the launch of the Operation Crocodile Smile IV in the area.

Speaking with journalists, Lagbaja said the exercise was part of the civil/military relationship.

He added that the army would continue to ensure peace and harmony with the civil society.

He said, “What you are witnessing this morning is environmental sanitation in continuation of our Operation Crocodile Smile IV.

“We will relate with the civil populace; we will relate with every stakeholder and it is on the basis of this relationship that we have come here this morning to clean the environment, especially this market.

“It is a show of military support to the civil populace that we are working to take care of their needs. The Operation Crocodile Smile IV is a military exercise that will be driven by intelligence. So, it serves two purposes.

“First, is to assist in training our troops for their day-to-day activities; and second, it has an intelligent head. Based on intelligence that we will receive from sister agencies like the Department of State Services, the police and other agencies, we will act to apprehend criminals and economic saboteurs, who operate in the general environment.

“We have population influencing activities like environmental sanitation, and tomorrow (Friday), we are going to have a medical exercise. We will go into schools and carry out sensitisation.”

The Chairman, Akpandem Market, Mr Nseabasi Ndoh, commended the Nigerian Army for maintaining a cordial relationship with the civilian population by cleaning up the market in spite of its core engagement.

He stated, “The army spokesman called me on Wednesday and told me that soldiers were coming to clean up the market; I thought he was joking. By 6am, they were here.

“They came with large number of their men and they have assisted us to clean the market. They have cut grasses around the market; so, we are very happy.

“I have been seeing the army from a very long distance, but today, I am so surprised about what they have done, because I have known the army for shooting.”

Ndoh added that the market committee had set up a sanitation task force to check the dumping of refuse in unauthorised places in the market.
CrimeA Young Man Arrested In Port Harcourt For Stealing Blames Hunger by Kiddo01(op): 9:57pm On Oct 28, 2019
Destiny Asuquo, a 25-year-old plumber who was arrested for break-in and entry into a store in Rumuodara, a suburb of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has blamed hunger and thirst for his criminal action.

He said this while pleading for pardon from the owner of the shop which he broke into to steal biscuits, soft drink and gala sausage, which, in his words, were meant to help ‘quench his hunger.’
Asuquo, from Akwa/Ibom state, was arrested by a vigilance group in Rumuodara Community, last Thursday’s morning after he broke into the provision shop to steal the biscuits, gala and soft drinks.
On interrogation, the suspect who said he is a plumber claimed he has not eaten for two days and has been hoping to get a job, but to no avail.

He claimed he was forced to break into the shop to eat something to save his life, having suffered chronic attack of ulcer for two nights.

The suspect has been handed over to Okporo Police station in Rumuodara for investigation and prosecution.

However, the Civil Rights Council Rivers State has called on the Vigilante group in Rumuodara to ensure that rights of arrested suspected criminals are not violated.
Nairaland GeneralWe Have Not Started Charging For USSD, MTN by Kiddo01(op): 5:59am On Oct 22, 2019
MTN Nigeria says it has not started charging its subscribers for bank transactions done via Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD).

The USSD allows banks’ customers access to bank services via their mobile phones.

Daily Trust reports that many MTN’s subscribers Sunday became agitated on Sunday when they received messages from the company informing them that with effect from Monday, it will start charging N4 per 20 seconds for USSD.

But speaking with Daily Trust on Monday, the Senior Manager, External Relations of MTN, Mr Funso Aina said the telecom company had not started implementing the new charge.

He said the company put the charge on hold as result of a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The Minister of Communications Dr Isa Ali Panatmi had on Sunday directed NCC to ask MTN to halt the planned charge.

“Many thanks for drawing my attention to it. We have directed NCC to ask MTN to suspend the plan. We are not aware of it officially. We will investigate and make sure right thing is done. Best wishes,’’ the minister said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has also told banks to yank off businesses from telecommunication operators that charge bank customers using USSD to make transactions.

The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele gave the order during a press briefing at the sidelines of the World Bank/IMF meetings in Washington DC on Sunday.

He explained that “about five months ago, I held a meeting with some telecom companies as well as the leading banks in Nigeria and the issue of USSD came up. At that time, we came to conclusion that the use of USSD is a sunk cost which is not an additional cost on the infrastructure of the telecom companies. But the telecoms companies disagreed with us and said it’s an additional investment and they needed to impose it. I appeal to them that they should review it downwards and they refused’ he said.

Explaining further Mr. Emefiele said: “I understand that three or four weeks ago, rather than reduce it, they went ahead to increase it by 300 per cent. I opposed it and I have told the banks that we will not allow this to happen. The banks are the people who give this business to the telecoms companies and I leave the banks and the telecom companies to engage. I have told the banks that they have to move their business, move their traffic to a telecom company that is ready to provide it at the lowest possible if not zero cost.”

FamilyMan Robs Bank A Day Before Wedding To Pay For Venue/hall, Ring by Kiddo01(op): 6:38am On Oct 15, 2019
He basically stated that he was getting married tomorrow so he didn’t have enough money for a wedding ring that he wanted to buy and he needed to pay for the wedding venue…

A Texas man has been arrested after his fiancée saw a social media post of him robbing a bank the day before his wedding so he could pay for the ring and the venue of his ceremony.

Heath Edward Bumpous from Crockett, Texas was charged with aggravated robbery and booked into the Trinity County Jail for allegedly approaching a bank teller at Citizens State Bank in Groveton, Texas, informing them that he had a weapon and then demanding money which he was then subsequently given, according to ABC’s affiliate station in Tyler, Texas KLTV.

“He basically stated that he was getting married tomorrow so he didn’t have enough money for a wedding ring that he wanted to buy and he needed to pay for the wedding venue,” Sheriff Woody Wallace said.

After receiving news of the robbery, Wallace immediately posted pictures of the suspect on the Trinity County Sherriff’s Facebook page in hopes that the public would be able to provide tips that would lead to the capture of the suspect.

It was then that Bumpous’ fiancée saw the Facebook post and recognized him.

“His fiancée, who he was supposed to marry tomorrow, was able to get in touch with him on the phone when she saw our post on Facebook. She knew it was him. She contacted him and asked him if he robbed a bank … she convinced him that she knew it was him. His picture was all on Facebook. He needed to turn himself in,” said Wallace in a video posted to his Facebook page.

Bumpous took his fiancée’s advice to heart and decided to turn himself into the Houston County Courthouse and confessed to his crimes.

Wallace says that most of the money was recovered along with clothes that he threw out of the window of his vehicle during his escape and the gun that he had concealed with him as well.

“He is now in custody. He has been charged with aggravated robbery. The district attorney has accepted the charges. It will go to a grand jury and he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” said Sherriff Wallace.

HealthStop Using Toothpaste To Tighten Your Vagina, Nigerian Doctor Warns Ladies by Kiddo01(op): 12:13am On Oct 05, 2019
A medical doctor, Dr. Oluwole Yusuf, has cautioned against the use of toothpaste to tighten the vagina to prevent irritation and inflammation among other diseases.

Yusuf told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin that the recent obsession by women having tight vagina was unhealthy and resorting to the use of toothpaste to tighten the vagina was a harmful practice.

According to him, the vagina is a self- cleansing organ that the body system does without help.

“Toothpaste is caustic and too abrasive for a sensitive body part like the vagina and using such on it can destroy the organisms meant to protect the vagina from possible infections.

“When the vagina can no longer protect itself, the body is prone to infections which could later destroy the tubes and block the chances of getting pregnant,’’ Yusuf said.

He urged women not to allow themselves to be “body-shamed’’ by their partners thereby, leading them to “a journey of ruin and regret’’.

“If a man tells you that you are too loose down there and you want to ruin your future because of that, he will eventually leave you for another.

“Be confident in yourself and allow your body to be the way it is.

“There are different healthy exercises or practices that can be done that will slowly tighten the vagina without posing a threat to the woman.

“Kegel exercises and Yoga exercise are part of the exercises that can make the vagina tight without engaging in harmful practices,’’ Yusuf said.

PoliticsNigeria @59; We've Not Met Founding Fathers Expectations, Tanko Yakasi by Kiddo01(op): 6:00am On Oct 01, 2019
A former political adviser to President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has said that 59 years after independence, Nigeria has not met the expectations of its founders in terms of development.

Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, Yakasai said although Nigeria has recorded some developments, the expectation was that the country would have been far ahead of where it is today.

“If we compare our position with sister countries like India, Brazil and Malysia, we will find out that they are far ahead of us and this is not what our founding fathers wanted,” he said.

The former political adviser said as a way forward, Nigerians should build democracy and strive hard to follow its dictates.

“The attitude of some Nigerian leaders destroyed our democracy. We call ourselves a democratic nation, but in reality, we know we are not because in a democratic nation, party leaders are in-charge not individuals. Even where you find individuals in-charge, it is the party members that vote that individuals to be in-charge.

since she started smoking at the age of 10, Melita Gordon says she won't stop smoking till she dies.
According to the Jamaican grandma, stopping would kill her. This statement was backed by her doctor who speculates that her relationship with cannabis may be partly responsible for her longevity.

Melita Gordon, the daughter of Richard Gordon and Michelle Jones says since she was baptized into the practice by her parents her commitment to pot has never ceased.

As reported by Green Rush Daily, Gordon said speaking in patois, “When mi goes a doctor he say him ah tell mi fi to stop smoke marijuana, because if mi stop, him a go lose mi,”

Cannabis plant
Although she has been smoking every day all day long for 85 years, not everyone is happy with her habit. Especially her daughter, who despite begging her mother to stop or at least reduce it to a roll per day, has made no inroads between her mother and marijuana.

Marijuana considered a narcotic in Ghana and some parts of the world, properties seems to have made its presence in half-truths and unfounded truths.

But leaked scientific research conducted in the late 1990s appears to endorse Melita Gordon's ‘theory’ to a long and happy life. According to this unpublished results, the study revealed that THC (a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant) increased the life expectancy of the test subjects.

At the end of the experiment, “those that were given THC had a clear survival advantage over the untreated rats”, as reported by the study.

Probably we should revisit this study when weed is legalized in Ghana.

There is no available record of the nationality of the first person to drive a car in Nigeria.

However, some sources offer an idea of who the first Nigerian to drive a car was.

According to some records, the first Nigerian to drive a car was a certain philanthropist known as Thomas Jones.

Thomas Jones – known famously as Tom Jones - was a wealthy Lagosian.

He is best known for donating the first public library to the government of Lagos, which was at the time known as the Lagos Colony.

The library opened in 1931, almost 20 years after Jones died.

The exact date that Tom Jones first drove the car is not recorded, though, it was believed to have occurred before 1913.

A popular street on Lagos Island, Lagos, was named after Tom Jones.
