@Isale,  Your History/Math/Yoruba/Ijala singing teacher; deaamnn!! I will pay to go back to Secondary school and seat in a class with a teacher like that. That's a real life Polymath right there. Kinda rare these days, everyone wants to specialize and certify!  undecided

While specialization has it's merits, IMO, too much of it robs us of the rich and diverse range of knowledge we can bring to bear on our lives and interactions.

A lot of the most celebrated minds in history were regarded as polymaths; Imhotep, Avicenna, Da vinci, Galileo, Newton, Pascal, Edward Said etc

like they say "Plough wide, dig deep"

Kilode.  I would love to see excerpts of some of the Yoruba literature we previously discussed, when you can, of course.

Also, from everyone, I would like us to share recommendations for reading material: literature, history, current affairs, biographies, etc.
I will see what I can do, getting tired of typing long stuff on NL these days. . .

@US school kids, I heard they are a handful, too much freedom and liberty huh?
Politics › Re: Plans To Stone Jonathan In Zamfara Averted By Police by Kilode1: 1:44pm On Mar 14, 2011
Sources revealed to Daily Independent that the suspected persons were arrested by the police (name withheld) included a tailor, who was given a contract of sewing All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) clothes to be worn by the PDP members with which to disguise and stone the visiting PDP
Presidential flag-bearers thereby causing chaos in the state.

It was further revealed that the arrested persons had mentioned the names of some PDP leaders of the state, who were alleged to be the brain behind the deal, claiming that huge amount of money was said to be released to ensure the success of the plan.

But, the underestimated Geography-come-literature teacher? Wow!  He brought it all to life.  So, you mean you have to employ an ABCDEF or AABB or any combination therefore at the end of each line, paying attention to syllables patterns, plus the verses also need uniformity?  Awesome.

But it was mixed fortunes for some of the women as hoodlums (known as area boys) had a field day. The hoodlums went about the streets surrounding the square in groups, snatching bags and mobile phones from mostly women, who screamed in helplessness.
A gorgeously dressed woman who stood just by the Catholic Mission Street waiting for her driver got a shock.

The area boys snatched her blackberry phone and ran away.

Politics › Re: Will Yorubas support Buhari/Ribadu without Bakare/Adeola? by Kilode1: 5:56pm On Mar 12, 2011
jason123:
Yorubas were the main supporters of GEJ when the Northern cabal ganged up against him. The igbos on NL were talking about Zoning and all. Even Ojukwu gave his support to IBB. Yorubas stood behind GEJ through out.
The reason why yorubas stopped supporting him has nothing to do with ethnic affiliation rather it is the tribalism game, lack of compassion, lack of vision and butt licking.

When he came to the SW to campaign, he praised yorubas as the most educated and sophisticated et al but that does not mean yorubas want praises, what they want is development and ZERO tolerance to corruption. Take a look at the people that accompanied him in the SW, AKALA, OGD, Bode etc these are the people that have milked us dry so why should they now support him? Because he is a southerner? NO. Forget the praises, praises cannot feed a hungry child, it cannot help a robbed victim, it cannot help the commuter or anyone. Its all a contrivance. Why do you think they (yorubas) dislike OBJ??
My brother, with the little time I have spent with the yorubas, I can tell you that their politics is not based on how much you say but what you can do! It has nothing to do with ethnicity. Remember, the SW has the highest amount of people that are not from that region, that alone speaks volumes about how they think.
GEJ systematically moved from a humble and caring man to a desperate, clueless and power hungry man. Take a look at what happened in JOS. What about the AKALAs? should they not be prosecuted?? The guy has 100% tolerance for corruption , in fact, he is corruption himself! Take a look at the PDP primaries and the envelopes under the seats of delegates (5000 dollars  shocked sad) .

Although most of you consider ACN as a tribal party, some if not most yorubas will not vote for Ribadu, they prefer Buhari! Why? It is the genuine desire to stamp out corruption regardless of the ethnic affiliation. That is the truth!!!!

We have to stamp out corruption and tribalism before we can move forward as a nation. GEJ will be voted for based on tribalism. GEJ brought Ciroma's wife, Alams and all because he is corrupt! Forget the sentiments like "God chose him". How can God choose a man who is this corrupt? How can God choose a man that welcomed Bode George out of prison? How can God choose a man that brought Alams ( a man who dressed as a woman just to escape UK) to his teamhuh HOW  MY BROTHERS? HOWhuhhuh?

A good, corrupt free Nigeria will be good for us all. Forget the North and South dichotomy. This is the time for change not FEE DEE FEEE!!
Good job Jason!

Literature › Re: Most Popular Nigerian Authors On Amazon Books by Kilode1: 5:53am On Mar 12, 2011
Orikinla:
I have only read Abani's short stories and some poems.
I thought Graceland was patronizing, because that title and name dropping of Elvis Presley drew the attention of the Western audience. And the cover was quite commercial.

I would prefer we celebrate our own musical icons like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Bobby Benson.

I have already written the novels covering the 1980s and 90s of Lagos and I hope to get them well published soon. I have covered Maroko before it was demolished. I have also covered the 1004 flats during the Second Republic. And my notes have covered 1999 to 2004.

The problem confronting Nigerian writers is the hypocrisy of the big publishers and the establishment.
If you have not won the celebrated international prizes like the Orange, Commonwealth, Caine and the other Western fashioned literary prizes, they won't be willing to publish you.
So, if Helon Habila did not win the Caine Prize, the world wouldn't have known of his genius?

There are thousands of Helon Habilas in Nigeria with so many unpublished manuscripts gathering cobwebs in the offices of Longman, Evans and other publishers in Nigeria.
And most of the local writers who won the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) prizes were either self-published or yet to be published.
I signed my first publsihing contract with Fourth Dimension in 1987. But the books have not been published till date. And it another publisher that published one of my books that same year.

A popular leading publisher in Nigeria cheats many of the authors.
They lure you to submit your unpublished typescripts and then ask you to contribute 25% of the cost of publication, but the fact is, the 25% from the author is enough to produce the book. So, the conned author actually paid for the publication of his or her book and the publishing company pays even less than 25% royalty to the ignorant author and gets away with it.

I encourage struggling but gifted Nigerian writers to come online and hone their craft while awaiting publication.

I believe the best way to write about Nigeria is to experience the living conditions in Nigeria and not from holidays in GRAs as the Nigerian "Aje Butter" novelists in America and the UK are doing.
Well said!

I know it's kinda old, but good thread.

Politics › Re: Gbenga Daniel Begs For Forgiveness & Bows To Obasanjo by Kilode1: 3:49am On Mar 12, 2011
fstranger3:
I think OGD was right. No matter who was in the wrong, It is OGD who was bound from the start to seek OBJ's forgiveness. Whether the age is counted in years of political leadersip or years on earth, it is true that age alone does not make a leader. Though, we can certainly deduce that while age doesn’t guarantee wisdom, without age (years on earth) wisdom can’t be fully attained. This is why in Yoruba culture, money or years of political leadership can never outweigh years on earth, so it would be absurd to see someone as old as OBJ to dobale to/beg someone of OGD's caliber and timbre, regardless of who wronged whom.

Also of note though, is that years on earth and eldership does not guarantee character (or wisdom for that matter). The Odu Ogbe Iwori says:

Ishekushe l’ewe le she
Iwa ihukuhu ni ti agbalagba

Bad conduct is what is attributed to youth
Bad character is what is attributed to elders

And no one apologizes for bad character. You only apologize for bad conduct.

So yes, OGD's interpretation was spot on. On this, I think you are on your own.
While you are right about the importance of age and the possible wisdom it confers, It is wrong to ascribe all wisdom to age or excuse bad behavior because of age. I'm glad you pointed that out at the end.

I couldn't care less about the issue they are fighting over, but I do care about the misuse of culture and the constant attempt at using Yoruba culture as a cover-up for misrule and misbehavior.

I'm standing in unison with the wise ancestors who wrote those proverbs by simply affirming that; old age does not give you the right to act with impunity and continue to expect respect.

It is Asilo Asa ati Ede (misuse of culture and language ) for OGD to tell us this;

I am a true Yoruba son. In Yoruba land, it does not matter who is right or who is wrong, it is the young person that will beg the older person
It matters who is right or wrong, age or political status does not give you the monopoly on right and wrong. You are not obligated to respect or beg an older person just because they are older.

I appreciate the message in the Odu you quoted, but it still does not support OGD's statement, We can agree to disagree on that

when i was young my mother use to sing a song.
omo ni gige , mo wo.
it means the child, is the mirror of life.

Children are more important then career. I do not want to say you have a silly woman for a wife.

If she say she want to go, let her go. if you people live abroad .
do like what 100% most nigeria men do abroad if she want child support , relocate to nigeria.
let her go thru the pain of taken care of a child alone.
let her go to yar adua and complain. no child support in nigeria.

Dont worry the social worker and police who is trying to earn her 40 hrs to take care of thier own children would not pick up her phone after you leave. she would discovery , she have been silly.
the government would ask her to go and get a JOB to take care of the child. welfare is not for a life time.

We have seen them over here. their lifes becomes useless they now become love-peddlers in the night. black in, white go out, pink wait at the door. do google, you would find nigeria women caught on tape. And they become what they call ALL NATION over here. Yoruba call them orise rise men. it mean mens from different national. The children now know uncle itano, uncle britain, daddy Jamecia, Daddy Akata, daddy china,

And they now end up having children . what we call women of united nation over here.

the childre fathers

child 1 father Jamo
Child 2 father Paki
Child 3 father Italo
Child 4 father chiko
child 5 father UK
child 6 Unknow nation[ did not know who the father is]

Baby mother plenty for abroad

the yorubas says if one door do not close another one would not open.

Dont waste your own tomorrow because of an unserious woman. There are good women out there who would love you for you.

And if you are in nigeria . Let her go if she want, there is nothing you can do. Pray for her, if she refuse move on. Women plenty who need husband. there are 70 million female in nigeria and 150 million in the USA. Look see how President Yar adua gave his children to men who had 3 iyawo already. what does that tell you. In nigeria they say be Jankara. Even ni AME, plenty plenty.

Bobo, you are not ulgy,

Children are more important than career, to hell with career. Employer can sack you, your children can never sack.

If she want to stay , look for a Godly pastor. not all those 410 pastor . who want money and let them talk to her.

My brother if you have all the money in the world and all title , degree and cars, if you have no children in lifes. Your life is worth nothing, career would not bury you, it is your children that would.

Even if you die a poor man, you are better than a rich man with no children. God would not make you oloshi. Oloshi is a person who does not have children. A poorman with children is worth more than a man with billion with no children. A child is worth more than ten billion dollar.

There are some women in this world who are praying to have child, your wife na says she does not want one because of career. Aku ku career ni hell. Dam the career. Career my foot,
