ola olabiy:
My question is: are we that bad to the extent that we can not even run a country in a progressive way no matter how blessed the country in question is?

It is the same story all over Africa.
I don't think we are inherently worse than any other group of people. I can't speak for all Africans but I have my theory of what I think is wrong with us.

IMO, It is a combination of historical and cultural factors, Africans were just blindsided by the events of their history and until we address the fundamental issues we have, we cannot bring our people to the level we want. (I can say more, but I will probably just post thoughts I wrote on other threads about this same issue)

The last 1000 years was not Africa's Millenium at all, we got owned and the consequences are still with us.

Looking at Angola's issues, the parallels with Nigeria is just too striking.

Minister takes on youth corps boss at budget defence
By Ini Ekott

February 15, 2011 07:23AM

Federal budget defence sessions, which usually have lawmakers pitched against ministers, yesterday saw the Minister of Youth and Social Development Akinlabi Olasunkanmi refusing to answer questions on the National Youth Service Corps before the House committee related to his ministry.

Mr. Olasunkanmi said that the director-general of the Corps, Maharazu Tsiga, had refused to brief him on details of the NYSC budget ahead of the defence. Lawmakers said they had the NYSC’s budget but Mr. Olasunkanmi said he did not have a copy. He also informed Mr. Tsiga that he had no authority to demand for a raise in the budget proposal for the scheme, telling him that passing such a request to the lawmakers went beyond his office.

“The federal government in their wisdom gave us an envelope, so it is not within the ministry to come and tell the National Assembly that what the executive proposed is not enough,” Mr. Olasunkanmi said, reacting to the director-general’s response that funds allocated for the NYSC for 2011, would not be sufficient.

“It is outside his purview to request for more, and he has not requested for more. We will work within the envelope that is given by the executive,” he said.

Mr. Tsiga disputed the position of the minister at a session where lawmakers, accustomed to toeing the hard line in the open against ministers, described Mr. Olasunkanmi’s actions as “embarrassing”.

Mr. Tsiga insisted that he had made the submissions to the minister as was required, saying the proposals were dispatched early enough to have reached him.

“I did not refuse to send my budget, I have my documented evidence here. If anything, he would have called me into his office or when I visited him there, he should have told me whatever that was wrong. If there is anything I do to you Mr. Minister, in front of all these gentlemen please just forgive me but not to be attacking my personality,” he said.

After Mr. Tsiga’s explanation, the minister asked the lawmakers for an extension of the defence timetable, citing his participation on President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team as the reason why he was unprepared. Members of the House turned down the request, questioning the minister’s abandoning of an official responsibility in favour of political campaign.

“This is middle of February; the nation cannot wait for you. We have a timeline for the budget defence which is ending today. This excuse is not strong enough for your ministry to go back and then come again. We are going to take everything about your ministry and the parastatals today,” said Ralph Okeke, a member of the committee on Youth and Social Development.

Later, at an interview Mr. Olasunkanmi said that what happened was just a “family affair”.

I have done it last year and this year and they send NO SPAM. Dell deletes all emails after voting.

But anyway, I am from Ghana and live in South Africa and have lived in Lagos and do not think you guys will get it done. I think the libararies should come to South Africa and Ghana first and I have emailed the company to say as much. I think because more votes will come from here in SA, they will of course bring the first ones here.

@Kilode; Local content is key, and one of the highlights of this project. People will be encouraged to create and upload their own content (see Google Baraza with whom we plan to open discussions-http://www.google.com/baraza/en/thread?tid=3084c339e2379cf8), and the only printed books you will find in the library will be the ones that that community finds relevant, even if its not in English.

A further distinction of the LAA approach is that it allows communities to create their own libraries around what is important to them, as against being merely the recipients of discarded and donated American books. With the on-demand printing facility, people can print media that is in their own language, including original works and translations. They can generate content for smaller libraries in neighbouring communities, while inexpensive, up-to-date textbooks can be printed for school children
This is just amazing stuff. I believe our institutions work better when communities take part ownership, like they did with education in the first republic regions, housing local schools, teachers and taking part ownership of the education process with central but not too intrusive administration.

the only printed books you will find in the library will be the ones that that community finds relevant, even if its not in English.
I like the point about language.

Now, will folks be able to take materials home for private use? including printed ones?

Or will all materials have to be used/consumed within the project space?

Will private commercial partners be allowed to advertise within the library space? if yes, what will their limits be?

We have significant interest from Google, Xerox and Cisco to become technical partners

We also have an agreement with Rice University to provide access to all their online resources.
Great job!

We met with some initial resistance from some people regarding locating in Nigeria The other Carribean guy involved(Who had previously worked in Nigeria) preferred other African countries but we told them they cant do anything meaningful when the biggest African country is out of it.
Na wa o. It seems the closer they are to Nigeria the lesser they like us undecided  Anyway, they shouldn't be afraid, we will surmount our problems and take a position befitting the largest Black population on earth. cool It's only a matter of time.

We need to educate more of our people first.

Further presentation to be done later in the year at MIT if we proceed to the final stages
Great! The MIT open courseware is a great resource. I can't wait to see the impact of this initiative in the lives of young Nigerians, especially those living outside urban areas.

Ioma, DK, please continue to push hard for the inclusion of local knowledge. Our people know so little about themselves, their environment, history, culture and local sciences. I'm personally learning more about us outside formal Nigerian Education.

NL lurkers, make una vote too o! from a socio-political standpoint(since this is in the politics section) It is harder for corrupt politicians to swindle young Nigerians armed with good knowledge and information.
Politics › Re: The Crimes Of Buhari= By Wole Soyinka by Kilode1: 5:24pm On Feb 15, 2011
According to the PDP national publicity secretary, Mr. John Odeh, YarAdua had always enjoyed sound health with high mental and intellectual condition, which he said surpassed those of other presidential candidates.

Odeh said the party was fully convinced about the ability of the Katsina State governor to carry its flag effectively in the next presidential election, a reason, according to him, members voted for him during the partys presidential primaries.

The PDP, said Odeh, had an internal mechanism for raising its members for election. The mechanism, he said, had never been faulted, having over the years produced results.

Soyinka certainly is not a medical doctor, and so we do not know how he had the idea that YarAdua has not been enjoying good health.

Let me state that the PDP presidential candidate enjoys a good health. That is evidenced by high academic background and his fine experiences in business, he said
.
Yeah right undecided

Sadly, Soyinka was vindicated, and still, a lot of my folks believe these PDP people will do right by Nigeria? SMH

Did you digest the tone? Do you really understand what sarcasm is? Osenobua nagbon!!!!  Bro’s the only reason he tried to downplay his post was because of the counter responses he got and I’m sure he re-read what he wrote and found out that he was really dumb to have written it in the first place.
Bidemi, my brother, O de mu suuru (take it easy)

At least if my sarcasm flew right over you, You can give me a small benefit of the doubt and check at least my recent posting history to get an idea of where I stand rhetorically.

You read my post and asked; "are you supposed to be a human being?", that obviously shows how outrageously unbelievable and sarcastic my comments were. Give me some credit bro! That was good sarcasm right there. grin cool

Sarcasm is better and more effective when it confounds and ridicules harshly IMO, it's ok if you don't get it though, It's not supposed to be too obvious, else it loses it's sarcastic value cool

I will not blow my trumpet futher. I think Violent did a good job already, and you did too by acknowledging how harsh and unbelievable the tone was.
Well, let's attack the problem from a slightly different perspective. Let's assume that the official Nigerian #s are roughly correct, and see what follows from this.

Kano in 2006, number listed is 9,401,288 (See here http://www.population.gov.ng/state/kanofinal.pdf).

Alright, so lets separate out the Kano Metro Area (See the 6 LGAs which constitute this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kano_State), Northern Kano and Southern Kano.

You can take the population of each LGA, divide by the size of the LGA in square km. I've tabulated that on the first sheet of the following spreadsheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AsNUaGBnBF1KdHlLcjFpbmZmdUYtenJtMHd1aFBJS0E&hl=en&authkey=CITEqpoD#gid=0

We get a density of 5600 per sq km for Kano Metro, 377.72 for Northern Kano, 296.67 for Southern Kano.

So in other words, we are calculating the population density of Kano minus the city of Kano and its metro areas. The non-urban parts of Kano.

How does these areas compare to the rest of Nigeria?

Well, I grabbed the population/land mass data from Wikipedia and stored it in sheet two of the above spreadsheet.

Here is the result: http://i51.tinypic.com/10covgm.jpg

So if we believe the officially published figures, then we also believe that the local governments of Northern Kano are more densely populated than all states of Nigeria aside from Lagos, Anambra, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Enugu, Abia, and and Abonyi.

So we must then believe that Northern Kano is more densely populated than Cross River, Delta, Abuja, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti.

We must also believe that Southern Kano is more densely populated than Delta State, and only slightly less dense than Osun.

Now, from what you know about Nigeria, do you believe that non-urban Kano State is more densely populated than some of the more populated places in the south?

Maybe some might not be convinced about the falseness of the Kano #s from this, but for me this alone is enough. Then you tack on some of the other data available and it becomes pretty clear that the #s are fake.
eku_bear, Is this a smart#ss attempt to dethrone Becomrich?

Are you trying to replace the time tested theories of mapology with your spreadsheets? angry

We believe in maps not spreadsheets, even if they arrive at the same conclusion.

Youngman, be careful!

Better pray and hope everyday that you do not become victims of the poor justice system in Nigeria. Cos if you do and come out alive, you'd be suffering from Naijaphobia.
Did you know that police secretly execute accused armed robbers without giving them proper trials. Do you know how many people have being wrongly framed and are serving jail terms for things they dont know about.   We know injustice exists everywhere in the world but the system in Nigeria permeates worse. We obviously need a change, lets face it, this nation has few things to be proud of
