Re:point (4)- ….I am sure I ‘ve read or heard something about the correlation of mothers’ level of education and that of their children …maybe someone else might have heard/read of it.
Yup heard that one too, the correlation of a mother's level of education and that of her children, as in the Zest that a child has for education is at par with his/her mother's educational-attainment zest.

@babadee
i think a college degree is more about sieving the wheat from the chaff because the naija system doesnt really teach anything (except the pro courses like the medicals and engineering to some extent) that why you have microbiologists working in banks
thats exactly the problem. Even the medicals and engineering etc, are a lot lacking.

I once met a lecturer from a certain Univ, we talked, etc, he told me he read B.Sc Chemistry, but he was lecturing Elect/Elect students. Ok, so he says he took a 6-months conversion course(after 2yrs of lecturing Chemistry students) to become an Engineering lecturer, because of the salary area/more Elect/Elect lecturers were needed in Elect/Elect debt at that time in his institution. Now, this guy doesnt even have it in mind to go for a Masters degree in Elec/Elect, at least to make up for his B.Sc Elect deficiency, all through his chat with me, im thinking, so, what exactly are you teaching elect/elect students, since he claims to lecture 3rd year above elect/elect students.

@HotStepper
datz why we must take electives in school, in most cases about 30 credits  and up and upon that must take FOUNDATION COURSES which comprises of 9 credits in Hummanities, 6 credits in NATURAL SCIENCE(BIOLOGY ETC) and 6 again in SOCIAL SCIENCE.
Yeah, i understand, but you know, a lot of/most of Nigeria grads ive met, its like theres this kind of pre-programmed mind-set "Just have a college degree" and thats all, "and ill go out and make it", and if you ask such what the definition of "making it" is to them, its all about money, money. I think its not just "working" or getting something to do that one should be thinking about, I feel people should be interested in making an impact, achieving something, not necessarily money wise, but maybe like thinking of a unique-breakthru in one's academic field,  or

,
its more of something like this: I believe development, as in DEVELOPMENT in a nation will come about when the right people are doing the right things.

Christianity EtcRe: The Real History Of Christianity - Was The Crucifixion A Hoax? by kimba(m): 10:54am On Jun 02, 2006
@Mr. Filch

You don come again o,

Theres no other person on Nairaland who can be so much concerned about knowing the falsehood about everything. In the major respect, about Jesus Christ, you have really done well.

Let me ask you: what do you do on the internet? I guess your fav search engine must be google.com, i mean what combinaition of words do you search for.

Next: There is another of your likes here on Nairaland. His name is Prophet. He is the Prophet of Nairaland and by the time he begins to prophesy, I believe no one will be able to log-on till the ministrations are over. The two of you need to put your resources(physical, spiritual, mental, psychological) everything together, perhaps you both could find a good solution to many of the problems of the world, you two would surely make a great team,

Next: I can give you answers to all the questions you have posted, but I just have a little something to add/an enquiry to make,

There is this man I met online, who happens to be a very spiritual person. In fact, the level of his spirituality is almost emanating from my computer screen. From what I have gathered from this man, he and his god are promoting sexual freedom. In fact, he claims a certain woman in Jesus time had sexual relations with Jesus Christ. Gosh, I myself couldnt handle this level of spirituality and I hope it wont hit me one day. Part of the Initial survey for new members include gathering of information on how often they masturbate etc. I find that very interesting, because of my little spirituality, I havent reached that level yet,.

Mr Filch, you just have to visit the baptism gallery and see how various spirits hover around those who are baptized. What really baffles me is that all his members so far are blacks. Is this man exploiting people or is this part of Ministry?

here is his website:http://kinkymarymagdelinechurch.cjb.net/

do you think this man is another hoax?
was he really called by God or he just called himself?
or maybe a false-prophet or just one of the many pedophiles in Europe.

please assist me in sorting out my confusion.

Let me ask you a question and think deeply about it:

Who do you want to get married to:
1) The Woman you love
2) The Children whom you havent known

NOTE: you always meet your wife first before you meet your Children.

Its her that will be by your side till-death-do-you-part, and not your children. At the end of the day, when they are all grown up and each finds his/her own place on earth, you would be left alone, with your wife and thats when your mind will go back to the first morning after your wedding night, when it was just 2-of you and the world.

The I.T field is very wide and you cant completely walk it through. By the time you think you have arrived, you will find out how far others have gone.

Yes, as you had been told before, what do you like doing.
- Programming

- Computer Operations

- Networking / Computer hardware

- Computer graphics design

- content publishing, editing, web design etc

-User interface design and applications

- game programming (this is a field I havent seen so many Nigerians interested in, and its one of the fields of Computing that brings in real money. You must be a thinker).

- Computer Animation - this could include game programming, if 3d. A good example of this is the movie: Jurassic Park

- Applications development - You need to find out what hasnt been done before which is unique to do/what has been done or can be optimized in one way or the other

- I.T Security - this is another good field, its all about leaning to hack whatever could hack you

- Robotics/Artificial intelligence - making computers control hardware: machines, cars etc. This goes closely with Automation etc,

I could continue, but I hope u are seeing the light little by little,

the starting point:
What do you like doing with computers? make a list in order of importance, 1 to 10
CareerGraduates: Is Your Occupation Related To Your Degree? by kimba(op): 8:19pm On Jun 01, 2006
Nigerian Graduates And Their Academic Area Of Study

I have been doing some study lately on my people, Nigerians, especially the graduates, and their inclination to practice what they studied in Univ.

I found out that most grads are not practicing the profession for which they obtained University education/degree.

Some of the reasons explained here:
1) I had been applying for like 2-3years for course "X" as my first choice, the only admission I got after 2-3yrs was course "Y", after much prayer and fasting. I had to take it to at least have a face to show among my friends, after I graduate, I can go back to what I really want to do.

The next question: 'Ok, so are you finally doing what you had planned to do before Univ'?

answer: NO

Reason: I'm still trying to survive. All I want now is to put food on my table, kind of

2) Another reason: 'I just need a college degree', whateva comes my way, kind of attitude,
Reason:
- "because the main question you are asked is if you are a University graduate, and once you answer 'YES', thats all thats needed, at least "to get a job"
- motivations of such peeps are:  "I have many friends who did not read any thing accounting-related and yet are working in reputable banks, are successful, if they can make it, I know I can make it, in todays world, what you read does not determine your success level, even Bill Gates is a drop-out"

3) Another reason: "I am the first born, my parents wanted me to be a nurse, so I read nursing".
Question: if given the opportunity, would you have chosen another field and not nursing?
Answer: Yes, I wanted to be a journalist.
Question: so would you still want to be a journalist in future
Answer: Yes, hopefully, if I get bored with being a nurse, I can divert.

4) Another reason, most common among the interviewed ladies.
its like this: all they are after is to have "a degree", no matter what. Next is they want to get married, since they know their husbands might not allow them to pursue their profession, so why the waste of time, a lot of "the husband is the crown of the wife" mentality, so therefore, once they have that crown they feel they have achieved everything in life.
-------------

OK, NLs, lets chat:

Of the 4-reasons I summarized above, I could only live with #1, since one is at the end of the rope here, but with the others, I think its more of a matter of being goal-less in life.

what do you think?

Question:
Are you presently Practicing your profession for which you received University Training/education? (YES/NO)
if No, - why are you not practicing what you read in the University?
if YES - are you really happy with your profession? if given a choice, would you have chosen something else

What other reasons, have you come across for people to practice, abandon, hate/love their profession?

1) what is God calling you to?

3) How did you come to know about "the calling"?
4) What is God calling you to do? God does everything with a purpose in mind. Has He revealed to you his purpose?
5) Is the calling according to God's word, why i said so, is because some ppl deceive themselves and say "im called by God etc, and God didnt call them"
6) Are you ready if truly God is calling you? It will entail sacrifice, denial etc, are you ready?

@CrisChidi

there are two things:
1) Your fiancee
2) Living with another man(whereva on planet earth)

May God deliver us o,

there can be only one solution: its either she is not your fiancee or you are just wishing she was. In fact, if its happening to you, sorry, you have a problem.

Note: before she was promoted to the "fiancee" level, a lot of water has passed underneath the bridge and you have finally decided on her, and her on you, so what is "the other man" still doing in the picture? and what is "living with" still doing in the whole story?

or you mean, "living with" her father, uncle, or some man-relative?
or is there something im not getting here?

wait first, who is she living with?

EducationRe: Studying Abroad: China Or Canada? by kimba(m): 7:20pm On May 31, 2006
@my2cents
don't worry, just wait and see.  grin grin grin

@davidlan
Yeah you do know a lot! The west is where the buzz is! If China is soooo good, why are there so many chinese students increasingly crossing over to the west to study?
You know in China, if you say "oh, i studied abroad, etc, in this country and that, ", its more like you are looked at as "great", not because of whateva educational attainments you have, its more of a "status quo". I have been to , and to ,

its like saying since you have at least travelled abroad, you have "arrived". Its more of a dying man's last wish kind of, Usually, Chinese will return home from wherever they go to.

another thing: because they have the money. A farmer in China doesnt need to rob a bank to  send his child(usually one/two) to the best schools in China or even in the U.S and still be able to fund his fees, at the same time still be a poor/average income man by Chinese standards. By the time the Nigerian daddy/mommy has like 5 or 6 kids or even more, at least everyone wants to out-do their parents(thats what someone told me), have 2 houses here, 3mansions there, 5cars here, etc., yes they can still train up their children in school, but they will have to be "rich" to send those kids abroad.

For the same amount of children to be trained abroad, a Nigerian mom/dad would have to do twice as hard work as a Chinese Mom/dad would have to do, if both are to be on the same economic scale.
EducationRe: Africa is a Continent, Not a Country by kimba(m): 7:10pm On May 31, 2006
@dblock
Most of 'rm don't mean to be offensive a lot of them are just uneducated(They are educated but don't know much about the outside world)
That is the truth. Many people just dont damn know about anywhere apart from where they live. Its not their fault, I think its our fault. We spend all the time learning everything about the west in ours schools, we spend all the time dreaming and wishing to "go abroad", and whereva, we forget to really discover beauty in where we presently are. Thats why many Nigerians quickly disappear once they get into the shores of another country. They dont stand unique in a multitude. We dont appreciate what we have. We dont appreciate our skin color, our hair, our body build. We dont appreciate the fact that a mosquito bite wont send us 6ft under.

That is the reason why we cant unite, no matter how many Nigerians are living in another country, in a community or in the same neighborhood, even working in the same wherever, they will always divide themselves into Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

One thing I like about the Chinese is that no matter where they go, what they achieve where they might even migrate too, they never forget home. Its more like in the blood. They live together, even outside CHina's shores. And you would find the same true of their descendants, even if born outside China. They appreciate their past, no matter how bad it is. Even if its once a year, they are going back to their village. But Nigeria, its not possible.
