If you would agree with me, this is more a matter of ego than it is of doing the right thing. Academics as a profession has its requirement the world over. While a graduate mechanical engineer may have worked in the field of engineering for 20 years with a lot of experience, to lecture, he still has to obtain a PhD which qualifies him as an academic.
