TravelRe: Should I Quit My Job For Masters In The Us? by klovesh: 6:02pm On Sep 02, 2013
2ndChance: My advise is that you please go for the MSc programme.

I have a colleague with IT background who left his job with a salary of over 600k for a Masters degree in Subsea Engineering in the UK .He was a contract staff for years with one of the Oil multinationals with no terminal benefits. The program was just for 1 year. He is back to Nigeria now and has successfully switched career from IT to Subsea Engineering. He works with one of the leading Oil and Gas firms in Nigeria now and got the job before concluding the Masters programme.
Interesting story. What I can tell you is that this is an exception rather than the norm. I studied the same course myself and I know quite a number of people that did. I have also been in the industry for a while and know how things are going. Your friend was one of the lucky/favoured few. Its not just about being smart or good here. His story is not the reason why someone else should take the same decision.

@OP. From my humble point of view, I will say you should pray to your God, take ur decision and follow it through. Some people have done and are regretting it and for some, it has been the best decision of their lives.

Mr Lagoshia, na wa for you o.

Did you read the preceding posts before writing your diatribe? People have condemned what the man said, christians inclusive. What do you expect again? We should go and kill him?

If you have pent up anger inside you already, then I guess you have just been looking for the slightest opportunity to rant. This is a cleric that I am sure most christians have never even heard of before.

How many of reports like this have you read in the last one year? Or what makes you to generalise so fast.

You actually need to learn the meaning of objectivity as you remarked in your earlier post. Your post stood objectivity on its head.

Sorry about your anger
PoliticsRe: Cleric Calls For Christian Governor In Lagos State Elections by klovesh: 11:21pm On Jun 09, 2013
As much as I totally disagree with what this cleric has said, I will like us to be matured while making comments and not go into unnecessary generalisation. Rather than call him and others names, I will simply say that he grossly erred in making such a comment considering his position.
I am a christian, and since Fashola has been governor, he has never deprived me of my right to worship. In fact, it took me a long time to know that he was a Muslim. I have no business with the religion of the governor as long as he does his job and does not try to impose any faith on me. In the last election in Oyo state for example, almost all the Christians I know of voted enmasse for Ajimobi, who was a muslim, as everybody was tired of Akala's rascality. We believed Ajimobi could give us a better and more responsible governance. He also did not play any religious card while campaigning.
Things like this just heat up the polity unnecessarily. Christians and Muslims can be good or bad administrators. What this type of thinking can amount to at the end of the day is that one rascal will come and show himself as one pious Christian. You vote him in and he starts misbehaving.
I believe the south west voters are more sophisticated than being swayed by something like this. Good governance has no religion.

Christianity EtcRe: Private Jet Is A Necessity And Not A Luxury - Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor by klovesh: 1:55am On Nov 26, 2012
EBK2: if he didnt use your money to buy the jet and no one complained that he was forced into giving his/her money away for that purpose, you really need to shut up and mind your business. It is always those that dont give that will moan about these things.

All well and good coming to NL to moan whereas it is not your money or government money. Members of the church who gave from there pocket are not complaining, so what is the fuss. And if you think they are gullible and weak, you are wrong because they are smart enough to make enough money to give.

Experience has shown me that it is those that dont know the Bible or weak clueless Christians (yes there are clueless and weak Christians) that have opinion on these things. Com'on the man has been preaching the Gospel for 40 years. I have to say something (and some of you will disagree): The work of a preacher of the gospel is more important to God than the work of even the president of US. God will provide any tool needed by a preacher to do his/her work.

If he should not have a jet, it is not the public or NLder that should decide that. It is a matter for God and the buyers of such jets.
It is is not the job of a preacher to build roads. But is the job of a preacher to preach the Gospel wherever (whether there is road or not).

Look at this scenario. He rejects the jet. Imagine God asking him why he has not preached in PH, he will go ' oh there is no road to go to PH'. God will go 'but i spoke to some people to buy you a jet so you can go to PH'. Pastor will go 'oh because of public and NL opinion, i rejected the jet. What do you think God will say. Preaching the Gospel is more important than anything including every opinion that any man can express.
We should just learn to mind our business in Nigeria. Preachers are not Father Xmas.
He has a Boss that he is accountable to and that Boss is wiser than all and doesnt need our help.
Guy, God bless u jare. Hypocrites all. How many of you has sold his/her car to send your neighbours' children to school? With all the explanations that the man gave, their minds are still made up.
It is not your job to draw a line between necessity and extravagance for others. You are not in their shoes, and it is not in any way your business.
And what does it concern you about how he will maintain it? Has he come to ask you for money? I wonder how Nigeria will progress with so much hypocrisy.
Imagine the length of discussions that have happened on this issue of one man getting himself jet. Is this how we will continue to waste our time? It is so crazy to me how people are so jobless. They started quoting scriptures that they know nothing about and do not obey. Please mind what concerns you. U can end up buying an island when you have the money. I do not care

Christianity EtcRe: Pastors Owning Private Jets Is An Embarrassment – Bishop Mathew Kukah by klovesh: 12:29am On Nov 19, 2012
This thread has made me to learn much about how some Nigerians think.

Guys, who told you people that church members are poor? This is one of the funniest impressions that people have here. Maybe the members of some churches are poor sha, but me I have not entered that kind of church in years. I have met boys in the late twenties and early thirties in church that control several millions of naira easily. You want to know what they do? Legitimate business. There are a lot of churches now where majority of the members are not poor. You can get into a service of one of the popular churches to see and understand by yourself.

Secondly, people think that pastors must get their money from tithes and offerings. This is does not have to be true. By the nature of the job that pastors do, they have always have a wide social network. For what Ive seen with pastors I've been close to, what they get as personal gifts is what makes the bulk of what they have. I have seen a pastor who has been on the job for like 15 yrs with a church of less than 2000 members getting millions in cash and materials as gifts from people who feel appreciative of his impact in their lives. If I mention the name of his church, most of you will not know it. This guy does not touch church offering for any personal thing. He does not even earn a salary. In fact, many of these people were no longer even coming to his church mostly because they have relocated to other places. I can only wonder what a person who has a church of tens of thousands of members will be able to get.

Someone needs to tell me how the private jet thing is so prevalent. There are tens of thousands of pastors in Nigeria. Five or six of them have jets. If u ask me, that is even less than a minority. Besides, I think what you should be looking at is what is in the bank account of the pastors, not the jets. Some may have several billions in their accounts but have not yet bought jets. Are these ones 'innocent'?

Please for the sake of all that is good, do not accuse a person of crime until you have evidence to support it. It is not fair. If you can present the evidence, I will be on your side 100%. But if you can't PROVE it, then there is no point.
Please I need someone to answer these questions objectively, giving evidences if applicable, and not with subjective inferences (please don't say 'how else can...'?)

1. How do you know that it is the offerings that these pastors are using to buy jets?
2. How do you know that they are getting the money from the government or politicians?
3. How do you know that they are not carrying out enough charity works?
4. Does a person's possession of materials equivalent to him worshiping them?

If you can answer these questions objectively, then I am on your side.
Christianity EtcRe: Nigerian Churches: Who Are They Building Universities For? by klovesh: 1:05pm On Sep 27, 2012
I like to be objective when it comes to analyzing issues. I believe it is not just to make conclusions based on limited information.
I am not taking any position about what these churches charge as fees and all that, but then I will like the bashers to reflect on these

1. You are sure about the fees, but do you really know how much the expenses of running a university are. I mean u should be able to do a detailed analysis and come up with figures. I hate arbitrariness. It may be cheaper or more costly than you think. If you don't know, then don't assume. It's not fair.
A lot of people know next to nothing about running an institution.

2. I have never seen anywhere in the world where private institutions charge little money. When they do, someone else is paying for the remainder. So what is the problem here? Are u absolutely sure that these unis don't offer scholarships or are u basing it on hearsay? From what I saw here, a lot of people have never attended the churches nor been to the universities.

3. From what I know about giving, your reward for contributing to build a Uni doesn't necessarily have to be a place for your ward in it. It is not necessarily where you sow to that you get the reward from. It is not normal physical trade. I think people that know the scriptures will understand this. In the same vein, I don't expect those that don't know the scriptures to understand, so they are free to say what they like

I am tired of Nigerians saying things out of emotions and limited information. We always seem to support the underdogs and bring exploits down.
Most of the comments I have read here lack depth.

Lastly, I think sometimes we don't need to stress ourselves so much on issues that don't really count. You have not donated towards the uni, so how does it affect you? The person attending the church knows why he is doing it. He is not disturbing your peace.

Mind you, the people building these schools don't read things like this. They have important things to worry about.

I welcome any bashing, just decided to post my thoughts. I need to go and spend more of my time doing important things.

Thank you
PoliticsRe: Muslims In Jos Protest Film On Prophet Mohammed by klovesh: 12:13am On Sep 14, 2012
I do not support a person embarking on unnecessary provocative actions such as what I assume is done in the said video (I have not seen it).
I also understand that religious issues are delicate, because religion sometimes conflicts with some rational views. I am not ready to compare a religion with the other but just to think aloud as a decent and normal person.

I am not comfortable with the fact that there have to be reactions all around the world over a video that one person that has no record anywhere made. This was done by a faceless person (or a group of people) who intended to provoke the muslims, not by a country or any identifiable group.

To me this situation looks like someone or using a megaphone to proclaim that my mother that I love so much was a prostitute. I know it will not be nice to hear, but then except the person can produce hard evidence, he/she will eventually be ignored. There is no reason for anyone to believe that my mother is a prostitute. The only reason why I may be uncomfortable is if I have been suspecting her. But then, I will be insane to go and slap another person that lives in the same area with the person.

Does it mean that there will always be riots and killings anytime that someone blasphemes? What if another one is released tomorrow or next week by a faceless person that just wants to 'pull the leg' of muslims?
So there we should expect a war over that?

I have generally not seen muslims on this thread disapproving the unrest, killing and protests. The inference I can draw from that is that this kind of reaction is a normal thing in Islam. I stand to be corrected on this.
Like I said, I have no problems with what the religion a person practices specifies, but then, a disturbance to public peace should be a no-no.
It is a difficult situation, because the ties that people hold to religion can be frighteningly strong, even when they don't understand.

I cannot add to or subtract from what a religion lays down, Im only trying to voice my concern over something that may cause serious problems world over

I'm somehow getting tired of all these news of violence locally and internationally.

Religion should make the world better, not worse.
Christianity EtcRe: Are We A Bunch Of Religious Hypocrites? by klovesh: 12:59pm On Nov 16, 2011
Enigma:
manmustwac

As far as I understand it, the opening post is about hypocrisy ---- not about the falsehood of religion/s as such. For example, see this last line from the opening post:
It seems to me the opening poster is saying: we don't really practise what our various religions teach and/or we misuse the teaching. I think there is a considerable amount of truth in this and to that extent I agree with much of the opening post by and large.

Let us try and reason together honestly for one minute: for this purpose only let me agree with you (really let me assume) that there is no God. Even if there is no God and we take the teachings of Christianity as only a moral code for right and wrong: do you think if people truly follow what Christianity teaches there would be so much corruption in Nigeria?

Do you think a person truly following the teachings of Christianity would cheat another person? Do you think a person following the teachings of Christianity will hold you to ransom until you pay some bribe before performing his official function? Do you think a person following the teaching of Christianity will not feel some remorse for taking sex.ual advantage of another person?

Let's even go to a different arena: do you think a person truly following the teachings of Christianity will buy private jets, build unaffordable universities, live opulently on the back of "tithes and offerings" of misguided people who call themselves his congregation or followers?
Well said Enigma.

There is a difference between what something is about and what some people have been practising. The write up is clearly about the perversion of the laid down principles. Some people just want to hijack it and turn it into another religion bashing thread

The things that christianity teaches are the things that will make a society sane. Fairness, equity, forgiveness, diligence, justice, etc are fundamental to the teachings . A real christian is someone u can lay your whole life in his hands and go to sleep. He/she is the kind of person u will want to do business with, employ, work under air have as a leader, trust me. That these things have been perverted is another issue

People should stop blaming religion for what it did not cause. What is happening is that corrupt people are hiding under the guise of religion. These two things are not equivalent.

That you sleep in a garage does not make you a car. Anybody can go to a church or a mosque, you simply need to walk in.

When understanding is impaired, there will always be problems
RomanceRe: Is It Ever Acceptable For A Woman To Propose To A Man! by klovesh: 11:21am On Oct 10, 2011
For those saying it is 21st century and referring to the western world need to take a closer look at how long their marriages averagely last over there.

For a man not to have proposed after 5 years of dating should make us ask some questions.

A real man that is ready for marriage and knows he is with the right person will definetely propose, in fact he will do it as soon as he can

Anything that makes him not to do that means something is wrong somewhere with him.

With all the agitation for gender equality going on around, it is still worthy of note that there are fundamental differences between a man and a woman. Things as simple as men being naturally muscular and women being on the fleshy side. In essence, what I mean is that we can be said to be equal, but we are not the same

Irrespective of what religious views people may take, I want to remind us that God is the one that created marriage, and not the western world. It was in existence before they knew what it was all about. Their efforts to do things the way they want is what has led to the failure of most of their marriages today

A man will be the head of the home. A man has an hunting mentality. He should go for the person and propose. For the lady, if the man is not proposing to you, you dont need to wait for him to or beg him to. He probably has his reasons.

What I will suggest to such a lady is: Dont prospose to him. Dont force him out of it. But u can tell him that you cannot just hang around if the relationship is not leading anywhere. If he still does not do anything, then he is not ready for it. Take your break and go ahead with your life. Chikena

If a woman proposes to the man, she has taken away a fundamental role and function of a man. In fact, its only a weak man that will accept that.

NAIRALANDERS!!!!!!!!!

Am I sure I am actually reading posts from people that are meant to be worthy citizens of this country?

Why so much hate? Are we sure we are okay?

Let me ask all of you people putting down other tribes: What was the part you played in choosing the tribe you came from? Were you not just born and found yourself belonging to where you are? What part did you play in making the tribe what it is now?

Its laughable that you are the same set of people that will end up castigating leaders of this country. I wonder what will happen when you become a leader yourself

This is one of the main problems of Africa, why we will find it difficult to develop. The minds of majority are too parochial, shallow and dark. Instead of collectively thinking of how to make things better for ourselves, we direct our thoughts on what will get us nowhere

Now let me ask: Do you think the break-up of Nigeria will end the problems? I tell u, for that to happen we will have to break up into like 100 nations. That is when u will know that Ekitis don't like Ibadans.

I tought the poster was trying to make us see the need to step down all these attacks, but I see shallow and selfish people that think everything about them is the best around.

U guys are the those that discourage me from this forum. Its too bad. Im almost moved to tears over all this

When we start knowing that the other person is as human as we are, then we are at the start point of progress.

May we get to where we have the right perspective, if not this country, or whatever it breaks up into is surely doomed

Christianity EtcRe: Forbes: The Five Richest Pastors In Nigeria by klovesh: 6:51pm On Jun 09, 2011
Really, I don't understand why the issue of rich Pastors has become a big deal on NL.
My take on it is as follows:

1.  I think there should be more constructive things that being discussed on this forum. We have had too much of discussion on rich pastors. Haba! I don't know what anybody will benefit from a kind of thread like this.

2. The ways by which money can come to a pastor are many. Don't always think it is the tithe and offering that they spend. For some churches those money go into church administration and running (trust me, it gulps a lot of money) and other things and not to the head pastor himself.

For example, I attend a church where the pastor is not paid a dime out of the collections in the church (I can say that confidently). The money he has are from personal gifts to him by people he has affected positively. With this he has more than enough and even gives out a lot of it. Will u blame me if I spend N2m on myself and my family after giving another N2m out? I don't think that is a bad way to live

These people that give gifts are not forced or cajoled on any way. It all depends on how much you value the person's influence in your life.
How much can you use to buy a good marriage, good health, sound spirit and mind etc. Some pastors have been used by God to bring this to a lot of people. They have mentored a lot of successful people too. So, if these people decide to give material things as a form of appreciation, I don't think anything is wrong with that. I will gladly give material to appreciate a person that has had a good influence on my life. No cajoling is needed

3. That a pastor is rich does not mean he/she doesn't give to the poor. If I remember well, the Bible does not encourage us to broadcast our noble deeds on the rooftops. It may be possible for a pastor to pay some couple of people's school fees without it making the headlines, but when he buys something, then the noise starts.

4. Many of these pastore have gone through a lot in the past. It They have sown. Many of you people talking can never give what some of them gave. Please, it will be unjust for you to just think they just sprang up a church and started making money like that. Don't just make assumptions.

4. You guys keep talking about some members of the congregation being poor. Note this: A pastor of a mostly poor congregation will be poor, and that of a mostly rich one will be rich. That is pure logic. And what do u expect the pastor to do to the poor people? To start dashing money out to them? I won't do that if I were the pastor. I will teach them what they can do about it, not give them money.

5. It is not everybody that will be a Mother Theresa. U guys saying all these too are not, and I don't think I want to either. So please separate a life devoted to extreme philantrophy from what we are saying here

Finally, for those that are Christians on this kind of thread, I will advise us to be careful in making comments. Some of these comments will upset the balance of fledgling Christians. I am referring to Christians in the thread here.

U don't want to be the person that will cause a new convert to dump his/her faith. I don't think any matured christian will criticise a man of God, ESPECIALLY WHEN U HAVE LIMITED INFORMATION. Leave God to judge both you and them

Wish everyone the best in life
EducationRe: List Of The Top 10 Best Universities In Nigeria by klovesh: 8:29am On Apr 07, 2011
Im sorry to say this but I think it will be an embarassment to Nigeria if Unilorin is indeed the best university.
Ranking or no ranking, what determines the quality of school is the quality of the graduates. Bingo.

I have met and worked with graduates from many universities, and I have not seen Unilorin graduates to be in any way special. In fact, most of them have not impressed me at all. That a university does not give first class degrees easily is not an indication that it is better that others.
First class graduates from institutions like OAU, Unilag, UI that give more readily have gone out to prove their mettle, even outside the country, and that provides a justification. I hardly hear of my friends studying abroad talking about Unilorin graduates, though graduates from these other schools are easily found there

I believe Unilorin's stinginess is more out of the insecurity of the lecturers, tradition and sorry to say, the unworthiness or many of the students. How will you tell me that none of your students deserve a first class. It does not happen even in the world's top universities, so how do we explain Unilorin's own?

In this kind of thread, everyone will claim his/her school is the best sha. So, its allowed
EducationRe: OAU-Ife University Closed Down Indefinitely by klovesh: 10:09am On Feb 25, 2011
I actually thought that things have changed in Ife, that closures have become a thing of the past. I graduated from the institution some 3 years ago, and believe, me, I had more that enough share of these closures.

My own take on this issue is that the students should act in wisdom and try and strike a balance. I must admit that the low fees, cost of living etc in Ife then were good things. Then, u culd leave home with as little as u had, and have a hope of surviving on the campus. Poor students could have a sense of belonging, without facing much pressures

While the students should try and preserve the meaningful and beneficial traditions of the school, they should also realise that things are changing generally and there is no point paying a price that is not worth the result.
In my own time, the price was 2-3 extra years (they were not all the students' fault anyway). It was too high for me. I wuld have given that away for some extra pay, if I culd trade.

The students need to have a future view of things. You are in school to get educated and leave. What happens after is what matters the most.

Great Ife!! If I were to do it all over, I think I will want to come back despite all the delay. Coming was quite worth it

I wish the students a nice stay at home, and pls try and get busy with something while u are waiting

Christianity EtcRe: The Expressway Churches by klovesh: 7:54pm On Feb 03, 2010
Very interesting thread indeed. This may just be the first time I will be reading extensively through any long thread on NL. The poster has raised some salient issues, though his tone somewhat raises some dust. My reply will make reference to christianity as it is the religion I understand and practice

I feel we are blaming religion for what religion itself has not caused. I have not personally seen christianity in particular to contradict a man's quest for knowledge and his exercise of diligence. An unsophisticated person is who he is, whether religious or not. It may be true that some people have dubiously used the vehicle of religion to manipulate and undermine others, yet, I believe it is like any other thing that can be used to achieve different ends (e.g U can use the same stick to build a house or to kill someone, that does not mean a stick itself is bad)

For me in particular, I started performing well in many of my endeavours after I became a Christian. I have never been happier. I can tell you with all humilty that God's grace has made me to acheive above many of my mates. At least that is the way I see it. Anybody can attribute this to anything he/she likes.

I also want to say that I think that spirituality is very real. I have once exhibited by own share of unbelief (almost going atheistic), but I thank God I am back. It is true that humans can achieve some lofty things, but it will be evasive for us to think we control everything. Even then, I still feel life is not all about achievements.

Maybe I should ask: What do we feel about witches and wizards, or other demonic forces. Do we think they exist at all? It will be funny to acknowledge these and not acknowledge God. I have seen some reference to Harry Porter and stuff. Do we think that story was created out of nothing (I mean the witches).

Most christians that are easily decieved are actually those that don't actually understand christainity. And for some fake and heartless "pastors", they constitute an opportunity to get fattened.
I will agree with the comment from someone that a lot of people will call on God when they are at the point at which they cannot help themselves again.

My post is what I think, and I am not imposing my thoughts and beliefs on anyone. At least, not on a thread that has featured a great display of intellectual brillance. I wish everyone the best
EducationRe: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by klovesh: 2:53pm On Jan 28, 2010
I don't see why having 87 first class graduates will create a fuss. The first question we should ask is about the total number of people that graduated and the number of deparments involved
I went to OAU, and the stuff about having two first class graduates is a kind of misinformation. The concerned convocation was only for a handful of people. Normally, many first class graduates are produced every session with a large percentage of them from engineering. My class alone produced five and some produced more. I can say that all got it on merit. In fact, I have see that it is easier to have a first class in engineering than any other field because it is based mainly on calculations. It is either you are right or wrong. The same happens even in foreign institutions.
If 87 people have worked for and gotten a first class, for me, there is no big deal. As long as they possess the stuff, they will do well after school.
For schools that abhor first class, a logical explanation is that either the students are not good enough or the lecturers have failed in delivering their responsibilities or are probably feeling insecure themselves. One should not be proud that his/her university does that.
I congratulate those that got it. Though it is not all they need, it will definitely open some doors for them.
