no body said God anointed a President. what was said good, bad, fat, ugly, lunatic, glutony, dat does remove d salient fact dat a President still remain one of those rear breed of human dat would rule a nation. I gave u d mind blowing stats dat a man chosen to be President still remain one of 11 other men dat would a nation considering each man where in d post for 8 years.

George Bush was not particularly d greatest & smartest American wen he became President, we are stll suffering from his un-neccessary invasion of Iraq today whereby British Muslims are prepared to kill fellow citizens becos of Bush's policiy but dat does not remove d fact dat he remain in dat elite & exclusive class of men who can call themselves President. Mr Know all,  I did not say you must be schooled in Harvard or LBS or MIT to be president. I said David ruled Israel with INTEGRITY OF HIS HEART and SKILLFULNESS OF HIS HANDS. Can you contest that.  Believe whatever, you are not seeing yourself as a stakeholder in Nigeria that's why you think it is only favour that qualifies for the job. (African religious mind) yet we are laid back in everything. You said Algore was schooled and mentored but did not get there, but do you think it was only favour that brought Obama there. Lazy folks,  Go and read audacity of hope,   Keep thinking this way and Nigeria will remain the same. Was OBJ not favoured? He was in the Prison, at the verge of death yet God delivered him, but did you find out from that same God if Presidency was the next thing for him. But to the hardness of your heart, you crowned him King and you can see the result. Jonathan was favoured to be president by God and if he knows God want him there come 2011, y bribing the senators, and all these dirty games. When God rejected Saul to be king, he begged Samuel that honour me before the people. Samuel said to obey is better than sacrifice but Samuel still honoured him, prayed for him, interceded for him but God said I have rejected him, y to hearken is better than sacrifice,  Thats y i said people should stop abusing prophets. They see what we do not see but as far as I am concerned, A THRONE SECURED WITH COMPROMISE CAN NEVER PRODUCE GOOD GOVERNANCE AND IF COMPROMISE TAKES YOU TO THE TOP, IT WILL KEEP YOU THERE.

Finally, David was anointed King and he knows but he never fought for it. He was preparing himself in the jungles. He had opportunity to kill rejected Saul but did not lay a finger on him. He allowed God to finish the job until Saul openly confessed that God has chosen you to be king. Can u say that of Jonathan? You guys repeat same mistakes year in year out and we all suffer for this apathy. IT IS TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE
You are most likely to win the UK lottery 10 times(the UK lottery is 14million to 1, while the Presidency is 150million to 1)  than to become the President of Nigeria, that is the odds we are dealing with here, and you open your moth yearning dust.

If the President is not rear human God knows what the definition of rear human is? undecided

You cannot dissociate a man from his party policies. Remember he got their through delegates votes and must represent them. How many evil men in a party will determine what will happen in Govt. As at today PDP has been there since 1999 and they have shown their stuffs. So it is time to try another party. That is how to make democracy work. No party in USA, UK and other developed economies can boast that they will RULE their nation for 80yrs. The power is vested on people. Cameron was brought in when people felt Labour had been too careless with their border control now he may likely be on his way out because of harsh economic principles vested on people.

Let us wake up and do the right thing once and for all. Nigeria case is always pathetic. We always have unprepared person becoming our president and they go their to experiment with our destinies, e.g OBJ was not part of democratic struggles, yet in 1999, he got it, same with Yaradua, now Jonathan. 2 yrs ago, was jonathan thinking of presidency? Obama has been dreaming about it for yrs and was doing something worthwhile to EARN it. Here, opportunist without ideas rule us. Mrs Jonathan had launched Woman for Change Initiatives because she must be seen to have done something. Did she think of this 4 years ago. The Presidency seat is an highly exalted and responsible office and ill-prepared charlatans should not just get their on sentiments. Jonathan has done nothing to deserve this seat. Religious con will compare Jonathan with David but they forgot that it was recorded that David shepherd Israel with the INTEGRITY of his heart and SKILLFULNESS of his hands,

If South South must be president, present candidates with history of performance- not a perfect man but at least to recruit a manager of a coy, you will check his CV and what he has done in the past and what he can bring to the table. Please let us think when we contribute cos posterity will ask us what we did when all these injustices were going on.

Questions to ponder on. 1. If Nigeria is your fathers company (and yours by inheritance) and u traveled for a long time to meet your father's company in the state Nigeria is, will you employ someone like Jonathan to turn the company back to profitability with this present credentials?

2. If you are a recruitment consultant and a bank is at the verge of collapse and your interest is to bring the company out of crises, will you just automatically employ deputy managing director who was part of the team that mismanage the bank int the first place or will you look for credible managers with history of performance?

As for the prayer, there is provision in the word of God not to believe every prophet of God until you have tested them by the Spirit and the Word but I do not think there is provision to abuse them based on emotional sentiments. I feel the pain of posters but instead of railing abusive words against Prophets, let us simply SAY NO, I DISAGREE WITH THIS POSITION until we are giving opportunities to ask questions from the individual on while he did what he did.

Finally, if Jonathan wins, it might be concluded that it is the will of God just like Saul but people forgot so easily that when Saul was chosen, it was not time for Israel to have a king. In fact God told Samuel that they did not reject you but they rejected me from being King over them.

My advice, RSVP. Forget ethnic bias. Use your common sense. Learn from History. OBJ also became xtian but a recent convert do not aspire to go to leadership. He needs to be trained and tutored and develop character first before going to leadership. David killed bears with bare hands, killed goliath by the words he spoke and finished it with stone. Jonathan does not have the Spirit of reformer. He has started playing the old games---- bribe senators, give govs automatic tickets with the likes of Akala, and all sort of dirty games. A THRONE SECURED THROUGH COMPROMISE CAN NEVER BRING GOOD GOVERNANCE. WHAT TAKES U TO THE TOP WILL SUSTAIN YOU THERE.

And this is not about being a xtian or muslim or traditionalist? Abimelech was an idol worshiper yet God restrained him from Sleeping with Sarah because of the Integrity of his heart, Selah
Mr man the President of a nation is not an accidental or opportunistic affair where the best man would necessary get the job. It is a job for the highly favoured super humans. It is not about whether u went to Oxford, Cambridge or even Harvard; you would be surprise a highly favoured man from a backwater like Kogi State University would get it before someone that has un-countable doctorates from the most prized institutions in the world.

Becoming the President of a nation is neither a fluke nor a calculated progress ional career plan that any human can follow judiciously, those that were groomed in the past like Al Gore we all know what happened to them later in life.

In a 100 year period only 25 men out of a population of 150 million Nigerians can be President that is if they are in the post for 4 years.

But if they are in the post for 8 years the statistics comes down to an even more scary and anun-imaginable a 12.5 people out of 150 million Nigerians.

Don’t u think this is an anomaly; in Yoruba we say “Abami eda” not human or half-human half spirit.

Even if one get’s there by mistake, opportunity or chance, that person is a highly favoured rare specie, that is the bone of contention and such a person must not only recognise this fact but celebrate it, thank God Jonathan has express his appreciation in the most explicit way

It is good for a President to know there is powerful being more than him somewhere. A pastor, bishop or imam is just a conduit pipe to connect with the most high. After all people like IBB and Yaradua who had the key to our treasury at arms lenght could not safe a dying wife from the cold hands of death(despite the reputed millions$$$$ stashed away) nor Yaradua safe himself from the most important job in his career when the grim ripper came calling sadly he dosen't take bribe. huh

To dish the hand that feeds you, is the begining of man's foolishness, thank God Jonathan does not belong to this class of neanderthals, Jonathan knows he is a highly favoured man and he showed humility by kneeling down to the most high not in his closet but in the presence and prying eyes of envious, mishevious men and women who for all we care can go to blazes with their cankerworm, uninformed and unbalanced comments, this is one act I call a noble one worthy of extolling.

It is always good to have a second term, the second term puts your popularity, your stewardship, your enthusiam and zeal to test, which is what  democracy is all about. The terms should be longer thus than the current 4 year period,  and lesser than Jonathan's proposed one year 7 year term. somewhere in the middle would just be fine.

Assuming the magical figure of 6 years is chosen, a bad President would be voted out of office whilst a good President would be given the nation continued progress in society,  culminating in those policies that allowed for  sustained growth, progressive policies, and favarable general well being of both citizens and the state at large.

Can u imagine having Jonathan / Sambo for a combine number  of 24 years assumig they are towing the part of progress, noting beats this sustained growth for this lenght of time.

This premise is obviously anchored on a free and fair election taken place as suppose to the unruly chaotic brigandage which have been our alma mater for some years now.

But for Jonathan to come out with this position(a single 7 year term for President and Governor) does it mean,  Messers Jonathan is not too confident with INEC given us a free and fair election come 2011, a situation which is not only dire but worrysome consdering the  cost covering this particular election in 20111

Sule Lamido: Replicating Abuja in Dutse?
By Zainab Suleiman-Okino

Ordinarily and in an ideal society, provision of basic infrastructure such as potable water, electricity, roads etc by those entrusted with leadership, are guaranteed rights of the citizens; but in Nigeria they are celebrated as achievements.

What is governance anyway if such are negotiable? Imagine a governor advertising a self-serving routine work like the renovation of Government House in newspapers. It is a mark of the level of our degeneration to cheer the provision of such amenities as landmark legacies. However, if you are abreast with the Nigerian situation where elected governors steal their states dry, turn states’ treasuries into personal purses and live in splendid opulence, you should have a reason to appreciate little efforts, even if it’s a drop in the ocean.

This is even more poignant for Jigawa state that was constantly classified (by all development indices) as the poorest state on account of zero-development tangibles. That appears to be changing. And for leaders who know the weight of their office, leadership is a responsibility that should not be frittered away. That, probably is the kind of responsibility that Alhaji Sule Lamido, the Governor of Jigawa has chosen to opt for.

Between Wednesday 28th- Friday 30th of October 2009, last week Dutse the Jigawa state capital was abuzz with activities. It was on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the Talakawa Summit, a peculiar programme designed to tackle poverty in a way different from any of its kind in Nigeria. The main activity where beneficiaries of the programme relieved their experiences of the last few months, when they began to receive grants from government was held on Thursday 29th October.

On the eve of the programme itself the Governor’s media adviser, Adagbo Onoja led editors on hand to some parts of the town that have witnessed government’s impact and the experience was revealing. While going through the newly constructed roads, one of the editors had remarked something to the effect that what Sule Lamido is doing in Jigawa is like replicating Abuja in Dutse. A new city has, in all ramifications emerged. For example, the three arms-zones: Judiciary, the bureaucracy and civil service all located within the same district competes favourably with Abuja’s three- arms zone.

The district is paved with good road network and streetlights. Flowers in their infancy are sprouting up and of course Aminu Kano Arena is within the area. The Rasheed Shekoni Hospital was started in 1996 by the then military Administrator. It was taken over by the Saminu Turaki Administration and abandoned midway. Now the Hospital is completed and Vamed-powered to last beyond the next 50 years.

Among the many housing estates in Dutse, the one that marveled the editors, and which they interrogated scurrilously is the 280 unit locally developed brick houses where ordinary people offered their labour. The cost is projected within affordable range. The snag there is whether ordinary people can afford it but I do hope Sule Lamido has a practical answer to that. The paradox of the tour is our ride through the half tarred, pretentiously dualised narrow Kiyawa road. According to our guide, the road is a reminder of the relics of the past rot.

Planned or inadvertent, the effect of this tour on us was profound. Whether it is the road revolution, the new look Dutse Hospital and schools the Sule Lamido administration is gradually restoring hope and rekindling the people’s trust in participatory democracy.

However, is this “rescue” effort convincing enough? Is everybody really on board this ship? I have my doubts. Many may have dismissed these efforts with a wave of the hands. People also wonder whether hands out in terms of tokenisms like N7, 000 for each disabled person, under the social security legislation of the state and giving money for start-up businesses is enough. Or even, whether people believe in Sule Lamido is genuine or not?

The effects may not be overwhelming but in a poor agrarian society like Jigawa where poverty bites hard, any attempt to change for good, no matter how minimal should not be despised. What is however important is the commitment and pragmatism brought into governance by the current administration. On doubts about the success and sustainability of his idealistic project the Governor told our group that he would not be deterred by the possibility of failure. “You cannot be a prisoner of anticipated failure, so you have to try and do away with conventional ways of thinking, of resorting to statistics and figures all of which had failed us in the past”, he said.

For me or anybody for that matter who was in Dutse about three years ago to witness the state capital’s backwardness and lack of infrastructure in contrast with the physical changes now evident, I think Lamido is on a sure footing. This may not be enough for him to win a re-election or awards, the ruling elite might fight back (that’s obvious), the governor himself might find power too addictive to be ready to negotiate on unfavourable term. Whatever happens, he should be inwardly gratified and fulfilled with his proudly thoughtful projects.

This negativity should not surprise anyone. As Dan Brown said in one of his best selling novels, Deception Point, “dishonest politicians hurt all politicians”, and are so tarred by the same brush. But for the Jigawa people whose total despair almost resulted into total loss a Lamido who came to judgment may have to go the extra mile before the people can repose trust in him.

So the journey has just begun. The challenges ahead are enormous and are now more daunting, but ultimately the greatest arbiter of all human actions is not man, not Jigawa people nor the insatiable elite. The greatest umpire is inevitably, posterity

Tribalism woud die a natural death, the day would start shooting every theiving poltician who stole above N5 Million naira the shooting should include their wives, the state would look after their children thereafter.

At the moment there is the tendency for a Yoruba man or Igbo man to support his Yoruba or igbo thieving brother just becos he is from his tribe. When u have universal laws and a prima facia cases and evidences against the culprit, the culprit would go down, people generally no matter the tribe would wake up to their responsibilities. This would lead to the rule of law been supreme. The law of the land should take precedents no matter what.

I mentioned it once in one of my earlier post, that the princess of Wales, Princess Diana ran out of a hair saloon where she was fixing her hair becos some probably illegal Naija man wanted to give her a parking ticket. That is what is called the rule of law. Nobody should be above the law.

Drama as Enugu REC rejects Chime’s gift

Uwakwe Abugu, Enugu

THERE was drama in Enugu yesterday as the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Mr. Josiah Uwazuruonye, turned down the Christmas gifts sent to the premises of the Enugu office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the Government House, Enugu, saying he did not need them to survive.

He said since the gifts were coming from an interested party (Governor Sullivan Chime) in the elections in which INEC will play the role of an umpire, it would amount to compromising the integrity and credibility of the commission to accept such gifts now that the new INEC has vowed to live up to expectations of Nigerians in the next year’s elections.
We gathered that the gift items included four cows, about fifty bags of rice, cartons of tin tomatoes and wine and that they were delivered to the INEC office on Tuesday evening by protocol officers.

Sources hinted yesterday that Uwazuruonye was not comfortable with the gesture when he was informed about it and promptly ordered the government officials to take the items away from the premises of the commission.
When the news of the mild drama made the round yesterday and newsmen made inquiries, the Resident Electoral Commissioner had said nothing happened but later spoke , saying he did not need such gifts to do his work, especially when it was coming from an interested party in the crucial elections next year.

He further clarified that it is an offence for anyone working in the commission to receive such gesture when elections are drawing near.
His words: “I rejected the gifts because I don’t require cow or any other gift from the governor or any person to do my work. No matter how you look at it, whether it is offered in the spirit of the season or not, people will say you have been compromised, that you have been bribed.
“Beyond that, however, I want to say that it is very wrong of the government to do so, especially knowing the situation of our politics, which the present INEC is trying to salvage.

“If it were in the military regime when you receive such a thing, you will be said to have entered a treaty but now, such gifts will earn you disqualification,” he stated.

The State of the East today with the Governor's you have Now.

IT’S Yuletide again. The signs are there as palpable as ever. The sweet memories of the years of yore keep flowing back to me, as the airwaves are rent with Christmas carols and other tunes associated with the season. The decorations are springing up across the country. In Lagos, where I live, they range from the spectacular to the ridiculous, from somber to opulent, from austere to obscenely extravagant, but it’s all in the spirit of the season. Even the notorious Christmas traffic jam in Lagos has crept in, ably assisted by the now seasonal Holy Ghost Festival of the Redeemed Christian Church, which attracts people from across the country. In spite of the infamous global economic meltdown, people are in the mood; they are shopping and getting ready for Christmas-a typical Nigerian conundrum.

Unlike before, however, the usual massive migration of people from the cities to the villages, especially to the eastern parts of the country, is literally non-existent this year. Barely two weeks to Christmas, people are not seriously discussing the trip home. Normally, by now, the electronics, the bags of rice, the cartons of drinks, the cars and the house helps would have commenced the journey home. The inter-state bus terminals would have been a bee-hive with people struggling for tickets and for seats, weighing and checking in cargo meant for use at home during the Christmas. Even the airports would have been bursting at the seams with human and vehicular traffic! But all of those have all but disappeared. It appears very few, if any, will be going eastwards this year for Christmas.

Check this out: I received a text message from a family friend, whose sister would be getting married (traditional) on New Year Day.  I was totally flabbergasted when I saw that the venue was Festac Town, Lagos, rather than their family home in the village. When I called my friend, guess what he said to me? “My brother, we don’t want to take chances. You know my sister’s husband lives in the US, and if we attempt to host the traditional wedding in the village, we will be courting armed robbers and kidnappers. People no longer do such silly things. The situation is so bad that they (robbers/kidnappers) will definitely come…just because they believe a lot of money would have been made and spent at the occasion. They will even write to you, and the saddest thing is that the Police cannot save you!”

Such is the reality of the depravity in the east, as we approach the Christmas, and that has been the case for over four years now. It is now much easier for a pregnant camel to pass through the half-closed eyes of a needle than for sensible parents to encourage their children to come home for Christmas. The security situation is absolutely terrifying. Nowhere is safe. Way back in the days, if you had security scare in the city, you would run back to your home town. Nowadays, security is more challenged in the villages than the cities, and if you don’t get smoked out by your traducers, you will get hurt by other agents of crime and violence.

Aside the security situation, there is literally no access to the east in terms of roads. It is as if the east has been abandoned. Everywhere you look, you see dilapidation, craters, potholes, failed roads, diversions, name it, plus of course the eponymous police check-points. The famous Lagos-Benin express way, which used to be a delight to peripatetic traders and other travelers, is now a mere skeleton. A trip from Lagos to Owerri (via Benin), which used to take an average of 6-8 hours in the 80s to late 90s now takes an average of 24 hours! People are subjected to all kinds of horrendous experiences including accidents and robberies while travelling on that road through the day and the night. The same goes for other roads into and across the East.

One of the major Luxury Bus operators told me recently that they are almost out of business on account of bad roads and the menace of robbers which have culminated, predictably, in loss of custom. Some smart airlines have mopped up what used to be the high-end of luxury bus travelers, with the ubiquitous online promo prices. Even when you manage to navigate the highways through to the villages in the east, the roads down there are atrocious. You will be lucky to still drive your car back, when the Christmas is over! Quite rightly so, because it’s either it gets stolen by the omnipresent marauding thieves or it gets damaged by the terrible roads. A priest friend, who doubted my account of the security situation in the East, two years ago, had an unpalatable (!) encounter with armed robbers when he stubbornly returned home from the United States-for Christmas. He literally fled right back to Lagos and was back in the US in less than a week, after he was robbed and stripped butt-unclothed on arrival at Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri. He promised not to visit again for a long time. The funny part was that I was still in the US, when he suddenly showed up in the house to narrate his ordeal. I initially thought he was a spirit! It was only out of milk of human kindness that I did not say the expected-“But I told you!”

Added to the frightening security situation and the poor state of the roads is the crushing poverty ravaging the towns and villages in the Eastern parts of Nigeria. It is so very pervasive that one could mistake everybody to be a beggar, quite literally. Indeed, poverty is the major catalyst for the rising crime, but I shall return to the causes presently. People practically live off others, one way or the other-a curious form of communalism, if you will. Open begging has become acceptable even among otherwise healthy adults, who unfortunately have no jobs or have lost the ones they had. Perhaps, the only thriving industry is politics (aside armed robbery and kidnapping) and it is the exclusive preserve of the strong, the wily and the dubious. Quite sadly so!

Another major challenge, which is obviously associated with poverty, is the spiraling mortality rate, resulting in timely and untimely deaths. I can’t remember any week my mother doesn’t call to inform me of one funeral or the other. Lest I forget, the funeral business is yet another industry that is booming, morbid as it may sound. Everywhere you go, you find mortuaries, casket sellers, ambulances, etc. Sometimes, there are two or more funerals a day, and people, having gotten used to it, just flow from one to the other, and get free lunch and drinks for their sympathetic attendance. The health system, like education, transportation and electricity, has gone to the dogs and basic illnesses like malaria, typhoid and cholera and, wait for it, hunger, are killing the people like Bird Flu! In the absence of functional hospitals, people have resorted to churches and native doctors, where supernatural interpretations are ascribed to well-known medical conditions leading to several inexplicable deaths.

One question that constantly wracks my brains is: how did we get to this sorry pass? Negligence. Wickedness. Incompetence. Ungodly leaders. Sometimes I wonder what Governors Martins Elechi, Ikedi Ohakim, Peter Obi, Theodore Orji and Sullivan Chime are doing. I wonder even so, what their predecessors did. I wonder what their focus is. For example, would it be a big deal to get the Federal Government to direct the military authorities to deploy soldiers to maintain peace and security in the East? What do they do with the eye-watering security votes they collect monthly? Indeed what do they do with the monthly allocations they receive from the Federation Account in addition to their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)?

I think the time has come for the people of Eastern Nigeria to ask their leaders and themselves very important questions. We cannot continue to blame everyone else but ourselves for our misfortunes. The time has come for things to change. It’s all in our hands to make that change. I will surely miss my village this Christmas. I write with tears in my eyes. I know the same goes for so many other Easterners, who have, for their own safety, said NO to the East this Christmas.

We can learn one or two things from the value of our dollar. One dollar in Nigeria is one dollar in Abu-dhabi. To think OBJ spent $16 billion dollar on electricity and another mouth watering $$$ tongue on the Lagos- Kano Train line and nothing to show for is shame. The sins of the father must be besotted to the son. 2011 NO TO PDP.

This is what our wasted dollar could have built for us in Nigeria, check-out Abu dhabi extensive road networks. Enjoying the sights
