I read on one thread 1,500 Edo state indigene in prison in Libya. I start wondering is naija that bad, even places that have serious civil war their citizens are not running away from their country the way naijas are trooping out as if something is chasing them out. |
This thread is really not about Naija is better than Abroad or Abroad is better than Naija, but it is about making people re-focus and re-addressing the issues that made them left Naija in the first place, Questions like are they in a position today to effect and make that dream they had b4 they left Naija become a reality, if yes why not go for it. For some people capital to start a business was the main issue others have their own personal reason. We all know our banks will not provide funds to the common man on the street so going abroad to work and raise capital should be seen as complementing our tight fisted banks, however I don’t blame our banks, that is actually a discuss for another day. The important thing to note is we have an alternative way to raise funds if the banks are not willing to lend. If capital is no more an issue what are we waiting for why not revitalised that dream. |
Forget to inform you lot that when the guy told me his balance – my account was reading -£250.00. my mortgage payment had just be taking from my account pushing it into the over draft facility giving to me, thank God it was an authorised ov and not un-authorised over draft, I beg make una no make person here this one oh na my little secret at least my friend did not know. I know a lot of diasporas can identify with this bit up here, except if they wan form. |
My close friend who has lived in the UK with me for over 15 years, decided one day that his fed up of living abroad that he wants to return to Naija. I asked him whether someone has offered him some posh job. He said no, I said then what are you going to be doing, he said he is going to China to buy some stuff and take them to Naija to sell. I said how much are you going to invest in this business of yours, he said you cant believe it I only need £2000.00 which is N500,000.00+. He said Nigeria is a virgin land if one plays one’s card well one could have N25 million in the bank within a short time. And he also went on saying all the money he makes is take home for him, no taxes, no national insurance deduction no corporate tax e.t.c I said the only way you are going to make that kind of money in a short time is if you get a contract with the government. He said his own business has nothing to do with the government he is bringing stuff into the country that the people needs, and the people can afford. We now had a bet I said I am sure within 18 months you will be back in London. I did not hear from my friend for sometime, then he called be from the blue, I said oh boy how now, what is been happening to you, he said his kids have moved back home that they are now in some in the boarding school. I said how is your business, he said things are moving slowly but surely that he has manage to pay the money he borrowed from his friend and even topped it up with some little interest. I said that is fantastic, I said don’t tell me you have already hit your N25 million mark already. He said no, no, no, haba when I started business I said “I for fear”. He now later told me he has about N5.6 million in his account at the time that was 8 months into the business and I start wondering 5.6 / 245 that is £22,857.14. I said that is some cool cash not so many Diasporas can boast of this kind of money in their savings account within 8 months of working or doing business in the west. Although one thing Diasporas have going for them is access to credit and assets especially houses which is normally the biggest investment for most people. I know people living in £650,000.00 homes but are struggling everyday to get things done in their lives but obviously when day finish paying off this huge mortgage they will have a house which would have appreciated in value . But I now looked at the quality of life, why should one wait to the age of 65 b4 one start enjoying the trappings of wealth after living a miserable life throughout. The big question to NLanders is do you think Naija edges it as per quality of life or the oyinbo system is better – which is work when you are young and enjoy later in life. ![]() Forget to inform you lot that when the guy told me his balance – my account was reading -£250.00. my mortgage payment had just be taking from my account pushing it into the over draft facility giving to me, thank God it was an authorised ov and not un-authorised over draft, I beg make una no make person here this one oh na my little secret at least my friend did not know. ![]() |
It is unfortunate his(Soludo's) re-denomination of the naira policy was not allowed to see the light of day. Although Yaradua initially said that the policy might be revisited but up to the last few minutes of soludo Governorship nothing was mentioned. I hope sanusi will not hijack this commendable policy which would have yanked Nigeria out of the unneccessary over devalution of her currency. Even though some economic pundits say sanusi is a man that can cut it in finance I wonder what a man who has qualifications in Islamic studies and Arabic studies from sudan in his later years has to contribute to the economic growth of Nigeria, I might however regret this utterances, but we wait to see sanusi's opening gambit. |
10 million Wole Soyinkas are inconsequential to the technological development of a state, they would only be remembered as individuals with noble laureate in English literature and that is invariably where it ends. check out this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-61080.0.html I 've dealt with this language issue before, and is good they are now trying to implement some of my ideas. Of course 10 million Soyinkas will not be appreciated in a backward backwater which your semi illiterate law makers are trying to create because arts and theatre which is held in high esteem and revered in most advance society will be seeing as irrelevant and inconsequential to a subsistence hungry people. There only focus will be how to and where to find the next meal. The Intelligentsia who are meant to guide this hungry and vulnerable people are feeding from the same white man’s hand and speaking the same white man’s language more than the natives. It is well documented that the Igbos in America have the highest Phd amongst all African tribes yet these same people want to deny the opportunities to their country folks, It will appear that some of your people take pride in seeing their kith and kin wallow in abject poverty I wonder whether it brings some sort of joy or maybe they get there kicks from what most people will consider as a selfish and inconsiderate behaviour. |
What location is that picture |
Infact Nigerians paste all 36 state capitals how come we dont have such details of our towns and cities, half the time it is only lagos and abuja, Mr Moderator please delete any Abuja and Lagos picture if the pictures are more than 5 |
You Biafrans u should shut up and cover your faces in shame, your smaller neighbours -MEND have engaged the Nigeria State and the federal might in a war of attrition for 10 years now and still counting. You Biafrans got your bumps wipped in less than 3 years. |
Japanese is only spoken by people in Japan and they have survived. According to you the inability to fully speak English or Igbo makes one a hoodlum. Please stop making yourself look more ridiculous, its not cute! In fact the Japanese are one of the laziest races when it comes to arts they can hardly speak any other language, but their deficiency is not a handicap as they excel beyond expectation in the sciences. But with the Igbos you will have a situation where you lack both the skill in speaking English properly nor speaking Igbo properly coupled with the fact you already live in an under developed agrarian society, your youths would be idle and we all know an idle mind is the devil’s workshop hence my reference to Hoodlums in my initial article. In this world we live there are the sciences and there are the arts. You cannot be the masters of both you are either a master in science – Brain surgeons, Astronauts, Electrical and Electro Magnetic Engineering or a masters in arts, here we can identify with the ingenuity of Picasso, the mastery of the English language by someone whose mother tongue is not English, Wole Soyinka comes to mind, this are achievements 98% of the human race cannot accomplish nor fulfil. The fact that the Russians sent someone to orbit round the earth is a feat worthy of praise, neither does this singular scientific adventure diminishes the great work and recognition that a non native speaker of a language has in mastery a language which is not his or her mother tongue. The two are at par one is not a greater feat than the other they are just different discipline. |
The problem with Anambra state is that her intelligentisia have migrated en-masse to the west in a self imposed exile expeditionary rendition with no intent of going back to the home state. The result of this brain drain is the half baked English speaking law makers in the house of assembly. To this law makers they are breaking new grounds but it is clear that the only ground that is broken is creating a breeding ground for social miscreants and hoodlums who are neither Igbo nor English speaking west africans. What I have noticed in this forum is that on one hand her intelligentisa want to hold on to the illusion that by revitalising her dying language they will somehow in their sub conscious re-connect with the home country, but the fact has to be told it is a mirage in their head and if care is not taking will result in such individuals sectioned under the mental act. |
The opposition raised a case, if Fashola is in the wrong, all he needs do is Change and move more towards doing things legally next time, and possibly save us money if that will happen. Simple!!! Why do we pride ourselves in over-complicating even the simplest things so we can claim things are ever difficult and impossible in our own idea of Nigeria. You are talking as if you dont have faintest clue about politics. Why dont you tell obama that he seem to offering jobs to a lot of Guys from Chicago. They are his cronies, George Bush did the same thing when he was in the white house, why would Fashola do anything different it is politicking, the onuses is on the opposition to win the next election if they want to effect any change. |
Russian language as of today is a national language of only Russian federation, Russian Russia is the mother tongue in 1. Ukrain 2. Belarus 3.Latvia - 50% of the population are ethnic russians 4.Georgia 5.The Causes 6. Moldovia even thus they have there own languages the long colonial rule in places like moldovia has made russia the language of choice. 7. Kazasthan- see moldovia 8.Azibajan - see moldovia 9. Poland - Polish is a derivate of the Russian language, I actually spoke to a polish and I asked him what is the difference he told me it is a derivative. 10. Bulgaria - Same as Poland a derivative. 11. Serbia - Same as Poland 12. Estonia - Same as latvia 13. - Northern Iran - I was really suprise about thisonly knew recently 14. Some part of Afghanistan 15. Mongolia - see moldovia Russia is the 5th largest language groupings in the world after English, Spanish, Mandari,French, Russia, Portuguse. |
To be precise 36 billion Naira consultancy fee is too much, but this kind of excesses pales into insignificance as the fraud perpetuated on a daily basis across the country by our elected officials makes this misappropriation looks like child’s play. At least the lagos state government had the effrontery to release the statement to the public. The ex metropolitan police commisioner in London was accused of favouritism and nepotism becos he awarded police contracts to a very close friend's company . Obviously the onuses are on the opposition to win the next election and institute the savings they claim can be made on consultancy. It is simple politics played to the gallery of the public you all have to remember that Fashola is not a saint, he is a politician first and foremost, and he has to pay his dues to his political God-fathers whoever they might be. You should also remember that Fashola did not drop from thin air to become Governor of lagos state. |
Did I not read somewhere that there was a surge by the ocean in VI sometime last week. Don’t the planners of this new city on the sea realise that the project is not only doomed but a huge disaster will be hovering in the horizon. |
If you make Igbo language an important language by way of the millions of Igbo people speaking it, English speakers will instead learn that language. For example, can you explain to me why English-speaking job applicants have an edge pver their competitors when they can speak Finnish (spoken by around 6 million), Greek (spoken by around 15 million), Czech (around 12 million), Swedish (9 million) and Swahilli (5 million native) talk less of Igbo which is spoken by over 25 million people. Where these other languages are spoken Finnish (spoken by around 6 million), Greek (spoken by around 15 million), Czech (around 12 million), Swedish (9 million) are developed economies. You cannot compare that with the underdeveloped agrarian based economy that the 25 million Igbos live. About 20 million of this population are semi-illiterates of what significance would such a people be to any western economy. By de-emphasising the importance of the English language in Anambra state, Anambra state will not only slip further into the abyss of illetricacy in any modern european language but will be viewed by even neighbouring Igbo state as backwater of backwardness. |
Why we have an Hausa Ambassador in the UK I don’t understand, the appointment does not reflect the ethnic composition of Nigerians in the UK nor the Ambassadors ability to understand the plights of southern Nigerians since most northerners tend to go back home immediately after their primary assignments whether it is schooling, conferences or other renditions as the case may be. I will be surprise however, if Nigeria has ever appointed a Christian either southerner or northerner as an Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The same argument can also be said of Abuja no southerner has been appointed as the Minister of the FCT in this new dispensation. |
@poster the subject matter is irrelevant to the Nigerian legislature since all expenses with regards to the Senate and the House of Reps members has been monetized (Obj Monetization policy ). However it might be relevant to our Governors in which case you will have to catch them with their pants down in other words red handed. The latter will be a tall order |
Makes me want to puke each time I come across people that wallow in this level of sempiternal timidity, I guess you are so convinced you have a valid argument, a rudimentary level of reasoning could not be disassociated to why superficial things are so important to you. Your warped thought process about the English language is an imprecation that blinds you from looking at the bigger picture, while you are slaving away trying to impress the original owners of English language, countries that pursue technological advancement in their native languages are achieving an insurmountable level of technological advancement. Russians pioneered space travel in their mothers tongue, to be able to understand what am saying, you are required to think, but literally you are NOT. You will have to go read what I wrote carefully, what is your grief at least the new law put in place in your state will produce emeritus professors in Igbo language and your type that can write so eloquently in the English language would be a dying breed which generation to come will only read in history books. The Irony is what will actually emerge from this kind of social linguistic experiment is half baked Igbo speakers and half baked English speakers creating a generation of buffoons who will not know there left from there right. Russians pioneered space travel in their mothers tongue, to be able to understand what am saying, you are required to think, but literally you are NOT. Don’t forget the Russia language is spoken in vast swath of land from central Europe to shores bordering Japan and Alaska. To reduce this international language to the level of Igbo which is a language spoken in a few states 200 miles radius of Enugu is an understatement which defiles logic. The Job opportunity open to Russian speakers all over the is unimaginable even an emeritus professor in Igbo language from Anambra state will be lucky to land a Job in neighbouring Imo state for not been a native how much more Nigeria as a whole and the world at large. The world is your oyster as an English speaker. |
be proud? if thats how an english man or our professeurs spoke to us none of us here will be here today. Its all about communicating not big words. ole Soyinka at a conference used so many supersized words that most people in the audience couldnt understand even a white man sitting next to me kept asking me what he was saying throughout. Because the language is the English man's mother tongue does not give him or her a perogative to the language. Most English people probably use less than 10% of the English vocabulary in their day to day conversation. Learning a language is a skill that no human being has a comparative advantage. If a yoruba man wants to learn Igbo there is nothing stopping him or her to be more erudite than a native Igbo. It is the level of intrest u commit to the study of the language. Whilst most English people dont speak more than 10% of the vocabulary Wole Soyinka might be on about 25% vocabulary level hence the professor not understanding Wole Soyinka. |
There are many books and pieces of literature that have been translated but have not lost much. Ngugi wa Thiong'o is aclaimed and many of his writings are in his native Kenyan tongue and he has not lost importance. Its just sad that you are trying to explain away how inferior you deem yourself and Non European language Speakers. Alexis de You cannot compare a language spoken by about 35%(Swahili ) of the african continuent with a Igbo a language spoken by less than 2% of the African continuent. Ugandas and Tanzanians that speak the language will recognised the great skill and mastery Ngugi wa Thiong has in presenting his prose in swahili so they can judge and recommend him for a Nobel price. Do you seriouly expect a yoruba man to recognised your eloquence and erudite igbo skill, neither can I nor 98% other Africans judge you. You will have to communicate in a more universal language for u to get that recognition. |
Jakumo More significantly, teeming hordes of Nigerian worshippers would be free get up off their knees where they had been immobilized in prayer like so many wildebeest, so as to re-engage their cognitive functions and get on with the many responsibilities and challenges of real life, rather than waiting in vain for the nirvana offered at great monetary cost in the afterlife by those rapacious "Men of Dog", who themselves know of no other occupation that stealing from the poor to finance their own lives of lavish consumption. The above write up is a very brillant write up very imaginative and up there with the dons of English . I have always said the Nigerian intelligentisia are the best English writers in the world and we as a nation should be proud of it. Do you know the best spanish nation in the world is the spanish spoken in Colombia, I used to think is the spanish spoken in spain. |
@savannah I did not say Anambra state will be illetrates. I said the state is breeding a new generation of English language illetrates there is a difference. I am an illetrate spanish speaker becos I can neither read nor understand spanish. illetrate english speakers - That is the bone of contention. I said that Anambra state will breed a new generation of illetrate english speakers. I am not disputing that Anambra state might however produce distinguish scholars who are erudite and versed in Igbo language, but such feat as admirable as it might be pales into insignificance as the brilliance gets whittled down as any attempt to translate such literal work and knowledge into English might be lost in translation. However if the same scholar communicates in a language which 3/4 of the world speaks and understand with the same literal knowledge and mastery of the language not only does the profile of such individual enhances in a world stage they might also be a potential candidate for a Nobel price in literature(Wole Soyinka ) and the envy of the original owners of the language alas England and America. |
I can see you are a literate english speaker. I am not perfect, u can imagine making yoruba the alpha and omega language in the SW. I would not be able to put 2 words together english. |
"The problem with delirious irredeemable inconsequential simpletons and excessively myopic ethnic antagonists is that they always have their sense of reasoning on ''sleep mode'', worse still; they cling tenaciously to their laughable infantile drivel and carry themselves with an air of importance that is merely conjured by their diseased imagination." You should have written that in igbo and let us see who would response to u, at least we are communicating and that is the first sign of progress. |
Fuuuuuuuuck me! You are dim-witted. you can shout F***k u from now to kingdom come, it only shows the kind of backward race u come from, u are the kind of people that make white people think Africans live on trees. To call the olubadan a slowpoke is the hieght of dis-respect even if a gun is put on my head I will not alter that kind of statement. |
North, most backward –Aliero Looks like Anambra are in a competition with the north to see who can bee more backwards us or them. By adopting Igbo as the language of commerce u are only going to breed a generation of illetrate english speakers. When the whole world is learning how to speak english even spanish and french are dicting their own languages to learn english, Anambra is turning the clock back learning a language that is only spoken in small enclave in Nigeria. It would have done Anambra more good if they made Mandarin the language of choice in anambra state going by the volume of business transcation between Anambra state and china. ![]() |
Absolute trash that this guy chats. You, feel free to go and lick anybody you wishes arse in Ibadan, I am Yoruba and I owe no one nothing. Generational duty me bleeping arse. You are not a yoruba person, 1) u are not civilised, I can bet my life on that. If Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden knew after eating the forbidden fruit that they were naked how some tribes could go about roaming about absolutely naked beats my imagination and I beleive u belong to such tribe, babaric savages that even pre-dates Adam and Eve. It is a bastard points to his father's house with his left hand. |
well said and enumerated , but that does not still justify this, It is a generational duty of all yorubas from lagos to as far north as Ogbomosho as a thank you gift to the Ibadan Monarch. If the araona kakanfo is alive today - MKO Abiola, he would have start the ball rolling by donating 1 billion naira and other eminent yorubas will follow suit. |
Bleep me. What a stuuuuupid statement There is nothing stupid in that statement it is a fact. I will tell u a little story there was a cowboy in the old wild west USA, he was the fastest draw in the west, if anybody draws against him u are dead meat b4 u say the J of the name jackie. So some coward knew this man was the fastest man in the west, but this coward wanted to be as popular as this legend, so one day the legend was walking down the street, the coward hid behind some boulder and shot the legend in his chest. The man died, he now annouced to the whole town that he had killed the legend. The town folks now told him u are the new legend, and a lot of town folks want to be as popular as the legend so they challenge him to a duel, he had no choice but to accept he was later killed in his first duel. That was the trick the hausa-fulani used they were living amongst the ilorins as visitors and they now plot and overthrew the yoruba king. What they did not realise was it was a hollow victory, like the coward that shot the legend. |
Hmm, but both came to whoop/dominate Yorubas in their own land abi? You can give all the excuse you want to give in the world. So you were talking thrash when you were trying to portray Yorubas as some special tribe that is superior to others. The Ilorin people were caught unawares, which is a cowards strategy, the hausa - fulani knew of the ferocity of the yorubas and they met their waterloo in ibadan, the more reason why all yorubas should come together and build the olubadan a befitting palace. |
You are not ashamed you lost Ilorin, could your super tribe, that could conquer the world, dream of reaching Zaria, talkless of Kano. Balderdash rant Yorubas are not colonialist by nature. The SW is blessed with rainfall throughout the year, there is no reason for yorubas to travel far and wide looking for greener pasture becos they are already in greener pasture. But the marauding hausa where running from desertification and spreading islam. Oyo had already fallen when Ibadan got the news, they now organised themselves cleverly and what ensued afterwards was a total anihilation of the hausas and fulani marauders. The British on the other hand lived in a cold miserable and wet island, so they were forced to travel and conquer better climes for her majesty. If only the yorubas where living in harsh clime then u will know wether we are a super race or not. They say na condition make crayfish bend. |
