Lawan said for Nigeria to surmount its challenges, all leaders must as a matter of urgency come together to ensure that the security and welfare needs of the people are adequately met.
“As leaders, we owe the people, not only the explanation but actions,” Lawan said, adding, “Those of us in leadership positions, we know what we need to do. We need to have courage and commitment and sustain them”. According to him, the nation is at a point where the provision of infrastructure alone by the government cannot sufficiently address the underlying cause of growing insecurity and illiteracy in the country. “What we need is not only infrastructure, but we need the capacity building of the people. In this part of the country, this report has been consistent and apparently, little has been done to reverse it,” he stated. The Senate President, therefore, called on the Federal Government to immediately introduce policies that would return the over 13 million out-of-school children back to school to curb the rising number of illiteracy in the country. He said the reported 13 million out-of-school children mostly in the north was dangerous for the country, adding that until the trend was reversed, no amount of infrastructure can prevent the social angle that would lead to serious insecurity.

Lawan urged leaders to live up to the responsibilities of their respective offices by demonstrating courage and acting expeditiously to guarantee the protection of lives and properties of citizens. He said: “Today, we are challenged by insecurity, sadly it is all over the country. “This requires that all of us at every level of government come together and work to ensure that lives and properties of citizens are protected. “The story is bad. Every day, it is either kidnapping, assassination or some kind of banditry that leaves our people and communities shattered and destroyed,” he lamented.

LOL. All these inter-tribal marriages have been taking place between Igbo women who have spent decades in Lagos and Abuja. So you want to tell me that the South East has run out of women for Igbo men to marry? 4 of my friends ( Igbo men ) who live and work in Lagos travelled home last year for their wedding to "Igbo women," same thing with Igbo men who live and work in the South east and get married to Igbo women.

It is normal for people to marry from their host communities just as Igbo women in Lagos are getting married to Yoruba men. During the Xenophobia attacks in South Africa, didn't you see the large number of Igbo men who had South African wives? Why didn't you complain about that one? Why are you always complaining Igbo Women? Do you know how many Igbo men who live in Europe have European wives? Why don't you complain about that?

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday disclosed that Nigeria’s population will reach about 543 million in 2050, and noted that the explosion would be more of a burden than an asset unless there is commensurate economic growth to take care of the population. The Vice President made the disclosure at the inauguration of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 42 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru near Jos Plateau State. He said the current administration is determined to bring appropriate policies to tackle the challenge that comes along with rapid population growth and ensure appropriate equilibrium.

Represented by the acting Head of Service, Folashade Yomi Esan, Osinbajo said human capital development involves creating the necessary environment for Nigerians to acquire relevant knowledge, skills and competences that can help grow a healthy society. He said the present administration is strongly committed to ensuring that the exponential population growth rate of Nigeria does not have a negative impact on the Nigerian society.

He charged the graduands to work in meeting up the population challenge, saying “The Federal Government has high expectations of the nominees of Senior Executive Course 42, given the critical role of human capital development as a response mechanism to rapid population growth in our national economy. “You should research carefully into this theme in order to proffer policy options that will enable Government fashion out appropriate responses to the challenge of rapid population growth and slow pace of human capital development,” he charged.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI:

AN URGENT REQUEST FOR EVACUATION FOR NIGERIANS STRANDED IN WUHAN, CHINA

My name is Ayodeji Adetunji Idowu, I am one of the Nigerians currently residing in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic outbreak. I am writing you this open letter to bring to your attention the situation of things with the Nigerians living in Wuhan and to seize this opportunity to convey our express desire to be evacuated out of Wuhan. Currently, there are 72 Nigerians trapped in Wuhan, 62 adults, and children among whom are students, workers, and business persons.

Since the outbreak of this virus, 702 people in total have died in Wuhan. It was reported that 86 people died yesterday, Friday, February 07, 2020, and from all the news reports that we monitor daily, its infection rate continues to soar. A city-wide lockdown has been in place since Thursday, January 23, 2020, which implies all residents have to stay indoors.

The mood of we, Nigerians caught up in this situation has been of anxiety which is borne out of the fear of getting infected to running out of essential supplies and utilities or being unable to get medical care for other ailments unrelated to the coronavirus. The mood here is fast turning to frustration, helplessness, and despondency because of our failure to receive diplomatic support to be evacuated. The lock-down has led to a closure of all commercial means (rail, road, and air) to leave the city. The Chinese authorities through its various communications to the foreigner community in the city have asked us to contact our embassies if we choose to leave.

Your Excellency, when this epidemic started to cause widespread panic in the city, officials at the Embassy in Beijing, and the office of the Chairman/CEO of the Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) reached out to our community. Their message to us at that time to encourage us and keep us calm that they and by the extension, the Federal Government was monitoring the situation just as many other countries were doing.

However, as the situation began to worsen, we started to see concrete moves from other countries to evacuate their citizens. We immediately communicated our request to also be evacuated to the embassy. Later, we were asked to write to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. All these we have done and our hopes have been high up that we would be evacuated. To provide some sort of relief for us, fellow Nigerians in other cities in China pooled for us some cash and non-cash support, we also received the personal donation from our lead envoy in China, His Excellency, Ambassador Baba Ahmad Jidda for the sum of twenty thousand yuan. However, Your Excellency, Mr. President, it saddens us that days and weeks have gone past, following several attempts through official channels and unofficial channels (social media) to get a favorable response from authorities responsible for our evacuation, we are yet to receive any concrete response from the government.

I would also like to bring to your attention Mr. President, that, our matter was taken to the House of Representatives, but our lawmakers, probably, out of their ignorance on our travails, laughed and jested over our matter. Eventually, they rejected the bill seeking to demand Nigerians stranded in Wuhan to be evacuated. On that same day, the Egyptian government evacuated its citizens, 350 of them out of Wuhan, three hundred and fifty Mr. President. Upon their arrival in Egypt after a 36 hours direct flight, they were all lodged into a single hotel for a 14-Day observation and quarantine. Do the Egyptian government place more value on the lives of its citizen than the Nigerian government does? Do the Moroccans or the Sudanese or the Algerians who have all evacuated their citizens place more premium on the lives of their citizens than Nigeria does?

I am not unmindful of the fears in minds of average Nigerians that all their compatriots currently residing in China particularly Wuhan may have been infected with the coronavirus and should therefore not be brought back to the country at this time. This feeling is understandable but it is based on ignorance. When we had the incidence of Ebola in Nigeria, it did not imply that everyone in the country had been automatically infected with Ebola. For the records Your Excellency, Mr. President, there is no record or case of any Nigerian infected with the virus. However, I fear this clean record may not linger long if the infection rate of this virus continues to soar. It is not our responsibility to allay the fears of our compatriots back home but it is our right to cry out and seek help from our government when we find ourselves in situations as precarious as this.

I hope Mr. President that now that you have read directly from a source in the thick of things, you will use the power of your good office to give the directive for our evacuation.

Below is Lagos state growth over the years. If the Igbos are actually a major force that developed Lagos and Ogun for what they are today, logic should tell us that the Igbos ought to have at least one state that will be better than the region they developed.

Just like saying because Africans have companies in USA and migrating enmasse to America means Africans developed USA. Basic economic migration ideology always show migration from less advantaged region to more advantages region and not the contrary.

Emancipate yourself from this ideology of developing everybody coz it makes you come as someone suffering from a chronic Napoleon complex syndrome.

That was because of politics. Ambode wanted to establish an assembly plant in Epe to compete with VON (they will produce the same make of those buses that Ambode imported). It's the same reason that Lagbus was cancelled and Primero was made the sole provider of BRT services.

The red BRT buses that were used during Fashola's era were assembled at VON.

You have still not told me why Lagos State Government should buy Innososn Vehicles instead of vehicles that are assembled in Lagos (apart from some conspiracy theory that is based on paranoia).
