In terms of size, Anambra has the 2nd smallest land mass, after Lagos. And as far as population is concerned, there hasn't been a credible census in this country in a a very long time. But I have showed you a data of active phone lines (from telecoms companies that at least shows the number of Anambra people that keep their phones active within the period of 4-months. Of course the data can't represent the entire population of the state but at least it tells us the number of adults or teens who have kept their phones active within a 4-months period.

Now, are you telling me that the the state hosting the so-called 3rd largest city in Africa, with an active population and considerable commercial concentration, can only muster 4-million active phone lines within 4-months?? Where is the rest of the population of the state? Is it that they refuse to use telephones in 4 straoght months, maybe because they are too broke to load them?

If Onitsha were as large as being claimed, it would certainly reflect in the sheer number of phone lines of the entire state, moreso considering that it is a commercial city. So I ask you, why didn't that data capture such a huge population if truly it exists? Look at other states that host large cities such as Kano, Oyo, Rivers,Kaduna, and the city state Abuja, and hen try and explain why those cities record far higher active phone lines within a 4-month period than Anambra that is supposed to be hosting the 3rd largest city in Africa. And even with the addition of the so-called neighboring cities, nothing suggests what is being peddled in that report. Onitsha as an economic powerhouse have always be a prime catalyst for Lagos demographic and economic changes over time. I have always maintain in this forum that Lagos journey into an African mega city of the 21st century was ignited by Onitsha. By the second half of 20th century, Onitsha have already became the biggest market in West Africa.Civil war, structural adjustment policies of early 80s, marginalization, dearth of infrastructure (no roads, seaport, international airport etc.) forced so many traders in their millions to move to Lagos in the eighties and thus, Lagos journey into mega city have begun. Bokoharam, internet, globalization, strong/rooted Igbo diasporan population, the successive policies/call for Igbos to invest back home, gradual yorubalization of Lagos State etc, all have resulted in Onitsha witnessing Urban expansion and population growth.(still with no seaport, rails, bad roads, second niger bridge, no electricity). Onitsha of 70s, 80s, 90s don't exist anymore. The boundaries have gone down. Urbanization & good network of roads in Anambra State have connected Onitsha to Asaba. Onitsha to Nnewi to Ekwulobia to Awka to Ozubulu, Ihiala, Okija and all in between to no boundaries.

Read full statement below In continuation with our resolve to keep Nigerians well informed of the activities of the Nigerian Army, I will be briefing you on the recent happenings in the North East of Nigeria. In the recent weeks, Nigerian troops deployed in the North East of Nigeria under Operation LAFIYA DOLE have come under series of attacks by large numbers of Boko Haram Terrorists. Photos: Buhari in Maiduguri Specifically, the Nigerian Army troops deployed at KUKAWA, NGOSHE, KARETO and GAJIRAM came under attack at different times within a 2 week period from 2 – 17th November 2018. Each of these incidents were successfully repelled and several members of the terrorists were killed. However, a total of 16 personnel were killed in the course of these attacks while 12 soldiers were wounded in action and are receiving treatment at our military medical facilities. As you are all aware, Nigeria is contributing troops to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) which has its headquarters in N’djamena, in the Republic of Chad. One of the Nigerian battalions (157 TF Bn), deployed under the auspices of the MNJTF was attacked at their Base on the outskirts of a town called METELE on 18th November 2018. During the attack, the troops were forced to withdraw and several casualties were recorded. As at date 23 personnel were killed in action and 31 personnel were wounded in action and have been evacuated to several medical hospitals within Borno State. The Nigerian Army commiserates with the MNJTF at this difficult time and wishes to state that all necessary support will be rendered to the MNJTF to reverse this resurgence of the Boko Haram Terrorists.
The Nigerian Army wishes to further commiserate with the families of the gallant officers and soldiers that paid the supreme price in the course of defending their fatherland. The sacrifices of these fallen heroes will not be in vain. We also wish all those wounded in action speedy recovery and assure them of our continued support and care. The incident of 18th November 2018, happened at a time when the Nigerian Army was planning to hold the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference for 2018 in Benin City, Edo State.
On account of this incident, the Conference had to be moved from Benin City to Maiduguri to enable the Nigerian Army leadership get closer to the troops on the ground and to better appraise our activities, assess our performance and identify our shortcomings as an Army. We are also sensitive to the fact that the nation is approaching an election year and thus we must be prepared to assist in providing security for the peaceful conduct of elections. Accordingly, the theme for this year’s annual conference is aptly titled, “Optimizing the Operational Efficiency of the Nigerian Army Towards Safeguarding Democracy and National Security in Nigeria”. Let me at this juncture assure all Nigerians and indeed the international community that the NA will work optimally, in conjunction with other security agencies to provide a secure environment for peace and unity in Nigeria. Since 2015, the Nigerian Army in conjunction with sister services and other security agencies have systematically degraded the capabilities and capacity of Boko Haram terrorists and many successes were achieved. However, in the last 2 – 3 months, we have noticed daring moves by the terrorists, increased use of drones against our defensive positions and infusion of foreign fighters in their ranks.
These potent threats require us to continually review our operations. At this point permit me to implore all of us to spare a thought for the brave men and women of the Nigerian Army who paid the supreme price for the security of Nigeria. U.S. Strategic Interests" at the Achebe Colloquium at Brown University. Lyman suggests that rather than continually emphasize
Nigeria's strategic importance, it would behoove us to consider elements
that might eventually lead to Nigeria's irrelevance on the international
stage.

TRANSCRIPT OF SPEECH (TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE VIDEO SPEECH)

Thank you very much Prof. Keller and thanks to the organizers of this conference. It is such a privilege to be here in a conference in honor of Prof. Achebe, an inspiration and teacher to all of us.

I have a long connection to Nigeria. Not only was I Ambassador there, I
have travelled to and from Nigeria for a number of years and have a deep and abiding vital emotional attachment to the Nigerian people, their magnificence, their courage, artistic brilliance, their irony, sense of humor in the face of challenges etc.

And I hope that we keep that in mind when I say some things that I think are counter to what we normally say about Nigeria. And I say that with all due respect to Eric Silla who is doing a magnificent work at State Department and to our good friend from the legislature, because I have a feeling that we both Nigerians and Americans may be doing Nigeria and Nigerians no favor by stressing Nigeria's strategic importance.

I know all the arguments: it is a major oil producer, it is the most
populous country in Africa, it has made major contributions to Africa in peacekeeping, and of course negatively if Nigeria were to fall apart the ripple effects would be tremendous, etc.. But I wonder if all this emphasis on Nigeria's importance creates a tendency of inflate Nigeria's opinion of its own invulnerability.

Among much of the elite today, I have the feeling that there is a belief that Nigeria is too big to fail, too important to be ignored, and that Nigerians can go on ignoring some of the most fundamental challenges they
have many of which we have talked about: disgraceful lack of
infrastructure, the growing problems of unemployment, the failure to deal with the underlying problems in the Niger-Delta, the failure to consolidate democracy and somehow feel will remain important to everybody because of all those reasons that are strategically important.

And I am not sure that that is helpful.

Let me sort of deconstruct those elements of Nigeria's importance, and ask whether they are as relevant as they have been.

We often hear that one in five Africans is a Nigerian. What does it mean? Do we ever say one in five Asians is a Chinese? Chinese power comes not just for the fact that it has a lot of people but it has harnessed the entrepreneurial talent and economic capacity and all the other talents of China to make her a major economic force and political force.

What does it mean that one in five Africans is Nigeria? It does not mean anything to a Namibian or a South African. It is a kind of conceit. What makes it important is what is happening to the people of Nigerian. Are their talents being tapped? Are they becoming an economic force? Is all that potential being used?

And the answer is "Not really."

And oil, yes, Nigeria is a major oil producer, but Brazil is now launching a 10-year program that is going to make it one of the major oil producers in the world. And every other country in Africa is now beginning to produce oil.

And Angola is rivalling Nigeria in oil production, and the United States has just discovered a huge gas reserve which is going to replace some of our dependence on imported energy.

So if you look ahead ten years, is Nigeria really going to be that relevant as a major oil producer, or just another of another of the many oil producers while the world moves on to alternative sources of energy and other sources of supply.

And what about its influence, its contributions to the continent? As our representative from the parliament talked about, there is a great history of those contributions. But that is history.

Is Nigeria really playing a major role today in the crisis in Niger on its border, or in Guinea, or in Darfur, or after many many promises making any contributions to Somalia?

The answer is no, Nigeria is today NOT making a major impact, on its region, or on the African Union or on the big problems of Africa that it was making before.

What about its economic influence?

Well, as we have talked about earlier, there is a de industrialization going on in Nigeria a lack of infrastructure, a lack of power means that with imported goods under globalization, Nigerian factories are closing, more and more people are becoming unemployed. and Nigeria is becoming a kind of
society that imports and exports and lives off the oil, which does not
make it a significant economic entity.

Now, of course, on the negative side, the collapse of Nigeria would be enormous, but is that a point to make Nigeria strategically important?

Years ago, I worked for an Assistant Secretary of State who had the longest tenure in that job in the 1980s and I remember in one meeting a minister from a country not very friendly to the United States came in and was berating the Assistant Secretary on all the evils of the United States and
all its dire plots and in things in Africa and was going on and on and
finally the Assistant Secretary cut him off and said: "You know, the biggest danger for your relationship with the United States is not our oppostion but that we will find you irrelevant."

The point is that Nigeria can become much less relevant to the United States. We have already seen evidence of it. When President Obama went to Ghana and not to Nigeria, he was sending a message, that Ghana symbolized
more of the significant trends, issues and importance that one wants to put on Africa than Nigeria.

And when I was asked by journalists why President Obama did not go to Nigeria, I said "what would he gain from going? Would Nigeria be a good model for democracy, would it be a model for good governance, would he
obtain new commitments on Darfur or Somalia or strengthen the African Union or in Niger or elsewhere?"

No he would not, so he did not go.

And when Secretary Clinton did go, indeed but she also went to Angola and who would have thought years ago that Angola would be the most stable country in the Gulf of Guinea and establish a binational commission in Angola.

So the handwriting may already be on the wall, and that is a sad commentary.

Because what it means is that Nigeria's most important strategic importance in the end could be that it has failed.

And that is a sad sad conclusion. It does not have to happen, but I think that we ought to stop talking about what a great country it is, and how terribly important it is to us and talk about what it would take for Nigeria to be that important and great.

And that takes an enormous amount of commitment. And you don't need saints, you don't need leaders like Nelson Mandela in every state, because you are not going to get them.

I served in South Korea in the middle of the 1960s and it was time when South Korea was poor and considered hopeless, but it was becoming to turn around, later to become to every person's amazement then the eleventh
largest economy in the world. And I remember the economist in my mission saying, you know it did not bother him that the leading elites in the government of South Korea were taking 15 - 20 percent off the top of every project, as long as every project was a good one, and that was the difference. The leadership at the time was determined to solve the fundamental economic issues of South Korea economy and turn its economy around.

It has not happened in Nigeria today.

You don't need saints. It needs
leaders who say "You know we could be becoming irrelevant, and we got to do something about it."

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that before Nigerians demand to see the changes he promised them during the 2015 election, they must first change their own attitude by shunning corruption and other social vices.

He said the value system of the nation had been eroded and that was why students would prefer to embrace cultism rather than face their studies. He said it was for the same reason youths were vandalising oil pipelines thus robbing the nation of much-needed resources.

There is something about Yoruba people that most us don't understand. There is a way they reason, whether this is based on tradition or in their DNA, time will tell. A typical yoruba man doesn't give a damn if something is happening to other people; he doesn't care AT ALL. Yoruba thinking is completely different from Igbo people way of thinking. Although most Igbos who have delt with Yorubas have discovered that generations past.

Is called world veiw or cosmological outlook of life...and it evolve in groups as a result of their religious background(in this case, Yoruba religion, Islam and Christianity), and the value system such multiple religious background bestow on that group...which subsequently influence their ethics in life. It's safe to incline that Yorubas see things in a more practical ways why Igbos see things in ideological ways. I criticise Yoruba practical ways of approach to critical issues of the day a lot...especially in Nigerian politics...because it has aided in the evolution of a moster. It is thesame approach in life which will tell them to vote in buhari again despite the religious and ethnic killings and nepotism kind of government we have under buhari.

My attention has been drawn to a story published by your good selves and titled ‘Ex-IGP Blasts Omokri: Jonathan Will Be Sad If I Open Up’.

In the said interview, the former Inspector General of Police boasted of being a lawyer and challenged me to a debate. He was responding to my statement wherein I exposed his lies against former President Jonathan whom he had slandered by alleging that he forced former President Jonathan to concede the 2015 Presidential elections.

You will recall that I proved, with facts and dates, that the ex-IGP is a liar and that he could not have rigged the Osun gubernatorial elections for the PDP because the dates of his appointment and the date of that election, as well as the date of his sack, do not add up.

I also revealed that Mr Suleiman Abba was sacked for dereliction of duty, because under his watch, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Kano State, Alhaji Mukaila Abdullahi, was burnt to death with his wife and two children on Friday, April 3, 2015, under suspicious circumstances after he had reported incidents of severe electoral fraud in his domain.

When confronted with this suspicious death, the then acting IGP of Police gave contradictory and unsatisfactory answers.

That being said, I note the boast of Mr Abba that he is a lawyer and his challenge to debate me. I wish to inform Mr Abba that I am also a lawyer with a Masters in Law from an English university and that I accept his challenge to debate me.

I hereby promise to buy Mr Abba a First Class Ticket to anywhere in the world outside Nigeria to facilitate the debate between him and me.

I hope that Mr Abba will not chicken out of his own challenge. I look forward to his speedy response.
