It is a fact. The Dutch and Belgian top flight are not more competitive than the English championship jare.

Icon4s: Eh if he starts warming bench at Bristol then they send him on another loan to a mid or lower table championship team. And if he still continues chopping bench they loan him again to a lower division.
How come we have never ever put into consideration pattern of play of either player or club when we discuss transfer of other players? It is only Iheanacho that a club must suit his pattern.
If he cannot get the nod at Bristol then what are we talking about? Yes i made that comment for those who are always sentimental about Nacho situation cos the general believe was he made a wrong move based on Leicester pattern of play which you are aware of, especially on this thread during Shakespeare tenured as a coach. Some blamed Shakespeare instead of Nacho even till today Puel is receiving knocks here for Nacho situation.I don't believe Bristol coach is better than Shakespeare or Puel so Nacho should raise his game cos he is a valuable member of Super eagles, his goal ratio is a top notch and he remain the only player in present Eagles that w can count on when it comes to goal scoring, playing time is important for him,not just go to any club and be sitting on the bench. |

Nigeria economy is just the only way out, until we have improved economy the pathetic situation. It affect all the segments in the country but our love for football make us believe it's only sports. I remember in the 80s when we have a relative better economy you see stadium full with spectators who are happy to watch the game irrespective of clubs involved but what we have now is damn terrible. The Nigeria leagues in the 80s was so good that some foreign clubs love to come down during pre season to play against Nigeria club side,i remember Leventis United vs St mirren a scottish premier league clubside played at national stadium. The only way out is good government and good leadership cos a good economy turns things around and it would definitely brings the best out of our football. |

Icon4s: Well, I quickly went to check Bristol's position in the Championship. They are 4th and so within the play off zone. It means they have a good chance of making it to the EPL next season. And if Iheanacho goes and performs there they may even over-take Derby county who are just 2points away in 2nd position and gain automatic qualification. And then seek permanent transfer for the player.
Benefit of this move is he will get enough playing time as we build up to Russia. The championship is really very competitive even more competitive than the Dutch or Belgian top divisions IMO.
Well, for me it is a better option than where he is as I don't think Puel having any plans for Iheanacho.
modified: Bristol are even playing the semi final of the League Cup. Hope Leicester situation would not repeat itself in Bristol like Coach doesn't know how to use him or Bristol patterns of play doesn't suit Nacho,so he should look for a club that he can fit in,making mistake again would be disastrous to his career. |

kennysville: Friends, countrymen, Nairalanders,
The problem is a blend of myriad of problems which takes a lot of concerted effort on our part. Here is my analysis
1. Public re-orientation....... the entire populace need to understand that there is career in sports. Sports is now big business and should be treated as such. The idea of non partisan followership of the League in nigeria needs to be set aside and looked into wholistically. A lot of us on nairaland here only visit the stadium when Super Eagles are playing. Anything short is waste of time. Our old folks too didnt help matters. They didnt make us into die hard fans like they were in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Even my dad who played soccer very well as an attacker never went to stadium to watch soccer. Reason? I may never know. And so it kinda trickled down to me. I cant say i went to watch IICC Shooting Stars at liberty stadium for once in my life. The change of name too also did much damage to the enthusiasm of fans. Thats how sentimental it was. Clubs need to be a thing of personal possession on the part of the fans. Another problem with nigeria soccer is in the mentality. Everyone wants to go to school and graduate and work in Oil company. I beta pass my neighbor lifestyle. Soccer too is a career. I am not scrapping the place of Education... dont get me wrong. Education is highly important because it increases ur intelligence on pitch. I dont have the time to prove this now
2. Soccer at grass root...... I remember the schools had Principals cup, State cup and so on. I am not sure those still go on. Even inter house sports where other high schools were invited seems to be a thing of the past. What happened to YSFON? Who are the folks in charge of these federations? Some clueless political appointee with no single background as to how to run organization of sports. Sports commissioners whose aim is to get into office and set aside development money for themselves. Whose sole ambition is how they may get to the senate seat. Lets bring back the days of youth involvement in our sports. The NUGA games, even if possible, introduce Varsity League. You will see followership increase. But when students are still struggling to make desired GPA nko?
3. Outsourcing..... It is not a must that government should hold on to the maintenance and ownership of clubs. If they still want to retain that, they should outsource to management companies. Companies with solid pedigree in management consultancy services. They are to do research on how this things are done , the acceptable standards, running of club affairs and report back to the government with good details. It will still be a win win situation. This gives room to quality and committment
4. Sponsorship..... When quality comes to the fore, its not a difficult thing for corporate bodies to partner with clubs o sponsorships. But fact is no one wants to put money into a venture that more or less is a designated waste bin. There has to be a template that also takes care of the corporate investors/ sponsors. 5. Restructuring..... Crowd attraction and control policies need to be sort of integrated into all these setups. It is not a must that police should be engaged. We could empower our paramilitary institutions like Road Safety and Civil Defence Corps who practically do nothing and are only existing by name only. Empower them by arming them, give them military training so that everything doesnt depend on Police only.
In fact, these are the 2 needed institutions before police csn even get involve. Security and access controls should also be made available. Referee protection also is needed so as to give a balance and unbiased officiating in matches. Player welfare packages need to be in place as well. Players who couldnt finish schools should be made to go back to empower their minds even if it has to be distance learning. They should be taught on how to invest their earnings from time to time. Financial Seminars here and there would help reduce the number of broke players after their careers.
Another issue is broadcasting and broadcast rights. The number of mundane programmes screened on tv need to be reduced drastically. Programmes need to be the type that are directed at improving, enlightening and educating young minds to see the unlimited possibilities in Nigeria right under our noses. Which means if NTA need to broadcast a match and dont have the capacity large enough in a specified area, they can enlist the support of other TV stations to kind of Co broadcast. But we all know how this tends to play out. NTA go dey form 1st in Africa. I have more to say but others can also expand on this
6Accountability..... This one is the most controversial part of all. Players play so they can earn. Whether they lost is not a reason to withold their Salaries. Salaries need to be paid on time without any form of coercion or mass action in the way of players goin on strike.. accountability with respect to gate takings and club policies need to be spelt out clearly. Ther should be room for improvement on these points I have made so far.
Thank you all Honestly me and goldfish80 supposed sue you for plagiarism(joking)cos we have said this before but some believe it will never work especially your point number 2.Good point cos you nailed it. |

Mickael2: y'all are saying this based on hindsight. What is the guarantee that he would have developed properly as an attacking midfielder under Ferguson? Over the years how many world class attacking midfielders did Ferguson produce? I can only remember Scholes. I can also remember him preferring Cleverly to a lot of other better midfielders, what is the guarantee that Mikel would not be overlooked in favour of cleverly? If you ask me I am totally content with the player Mikel is right now, hypothetical he could have developed into a better player and he could have ended up a lot worse as well so we need to accept what we have Thank you my man.I remember a very talented Angola player that was wasted by Ferguson but couldn't recalled his name, may be one Manucho. |

OMANBALA1: I just dey look all these forumites that want to die untop the guy head, over hyping the guy as if we dont know what he has to offer. Some even argued he deserve to win the APOTY...I don suffer, just because he is a danm Nigerian. Moses is not world class just a little above average!
Moses is a guy who believe he can dribble everybody on the pitch and score a breathtaking goal every single time, Conte monitored him and realize his end product is not that impressive and converted him to wing back and that experiment saved Moses's career. Now, they have a Zappaccosta, a terrific right back who can equally attack with great fluidity and his performances are beginning to expose Moses.
This same Moses becomes a hero of some sort when he plays for Nigeria. No, people make him a hero because we have nothing better but the most shocking and disturbing post I read here last year was that Moses deserve to win the APOTY....Get outa here! When Sala, Abua and Mane are there and posting terrific performances. If Moses wins the APOTY nobody will take us serious anymore. Moses is not what people try to sell here. I watch Moses when he plays for Nigeria, very careless and complacent but with few moments of brilliance we forget all his rubbish because Nigerians have poor memory just like they will vote buhari again then complain he is useless.
I am not saying Moses should sit on bench but place him where he belongs...See as they scatter the guy against Arsenal. Sir with due respect you have spoken and i need to make my own contribution to your comment which did not portrayed Moses as a good player and did not acknowledges his contribution to the success of Chelsea last season and Nigeria qualification to WC.Victor Moses deserves more than this cos he was highly influential to Chelsea as a team and just poor performance in two or three matches should not have warrant this slain comment. During APOTY nomination i came out boldly to tell anyone who care to listen that Moses is not winning APOTY and when three players were shortlisted i came out and said Salla,Aubemeyang and Mane deserved it,this is to tell you some of us believe he has not done enough to merit it. I have read some of your comments on Moses Victor even Ekong Troost which i quite agreed and i wasn't surprised cos you always saying it that he is not a team player due to his excessive dribbling but with your post it seems you don't rate him as a player. I watched Arsenal match and i don't believe in giving excuses for bad performance but do we say Morata is a terrible player for poor performance yesterday against Arsenal, honestly you are too harsh in evaluating Moses. It's normal for forumites to champion Moses for APOTY cos he had a great season and Conte will always remember him as one of the players that made his formation unique or what do you want to say about his contributions to WC qualification, scoring three goals, winning MOTM and making CAF team in every WC match, he deserves little respect. I do not understand what you mean by we don't have something better, mind you we beat Zambia without Moses in Ndola, beating Argentina without Moses but Argentina couldn't beat Nigeria twice without Messi, this is to tell you the team is solid. Victor Moses remain one of the best Nigeria player and his positive contribution to the team outweigh his negative and remain the best Nigeria player during WC qualification and Rohr rate him highly. |

kayodekb: WHAT NIGERIAN CHRISTIANS DEFINE AS TOLERANCE Has anyone paid attention to the definition of 'tolerance' by Nigerian Christians? . If you don't use Hijab, you are tolerant, if you don't keep beard, you are tolerant, if you join them in Christmas then you are tolerant. . In a nut shell, stop practicing Islam and start practicing Christianity, then you are tolerant. . Start shaking hands with opposite gender indiscriminately, then you shall be celebrated as 'tolerant' start wearing short short scarf instead of full Hijab, then you are tolerant! . . The more you abandon all Islamic Injunctions, the more you are tolerant. . Note, if Nigerian Christians start calling you tolerant, please start crying because they are celebrating your gradual exit from Islam. . In all honesty and sincerity I acknowledge the REAL tolerant Christians who see me as a Human being and respect my identity as a Muslim. . However, may all Christians who boil in rage whenever they see me in Hijab be consumed by that rage of theirs. . May all intolerant oppressors in the name of Christians who get instant headache whenever I refuse to shake the hands of opposite gender be consumed by the consequences of their novel intolerance. . Bunch of outstanding hypocrites. I don't have headache when they are on their way to Church on Sunday, yet they burn in anger whenever they see me on my way to Masjid on Friday. . The federal government Christianize Nigeria by declaring two days in a week as PUBLIC HOLIDAY, because they have got to go to Church on Sunday and the Saturday Adventist have got to go to Church on Saturday, yet to spare me two hours to attend Mosque on Friday becomes major problems for these celebrated bigots. . Yet they talk about tolerance, if I don't have problems with the obvious Christianization of Nigeria by declaring the days of worship of Christians as PUBLIC HOLIDAY, and they literarily get mad because I left the class to pray on Friday who is the tolerant? . Lecturers will come to class to preach Jesus, yet no Muslim lecturer will dare to. Why do I have to be tensed up Everytime because of the fear of molestation by people whose intolerance are turning them to mad people. Can you imagine a lecturer literarily shaking while asking my friend to remove her niqab. He was shaking while roaring like a mad man. I stood up to him and told him that he could ask the female security personnel to confirm her Identity, yet he will have none of that. A lecturer had once used almost ten minutes in class to VENT because a well dressed Muslim's trouser is not been dragged on the floor. Yet one of the 'Jazz' boys in class whose trouser was also jumping is not been addressed. I have realized that it is our religion as Muslims that actually enrage them, not really our identity. . I will try to encourage these oppressors to keep it up and they should try to double up the victimization they are good at, the burden of your boiling heart is on you. . Imagine, shameless people that are not even ashamed of the victimization of Hijab sisters, they are not ashamed of their intolerance, I have never seen unrepentant HATE CRIMINALS like some Nigerian Christians. They are even bold enough to defend their gross intolerance. . Imagine arguments such as "But Buhari's daughter removed her hijab during her call to bar ceremony" The same Buhari they have earlier called TERRORIST is now their sweetheart because he has given up part of Islam. Is Buhari now equivalent to Islam? . Finally, O ye Muslims that need acceptance from Christians before you will be able to live, just know that, "The more you leave Islam, the more they celebrate you" . Why do our sisters have to cry and have that far distant looks on their faces whenever we ask them about the day they are called to bar, why should they have to deal with the trauma of being violated. Hijab is just like shirt or blouse to us, IT IS PART OF CLOTHES! it is not a uniform, how violated will you feel if you are asked to remove your blous e or top for just a 'ceremony', won't you feel violated? Yet these hypocrites makes the barbarism of removing the Hijab during call to bar ceremony 'no big deal' SHAME ON YOU BIGOTS, SHAME! . I was still in Junior Secondary school when I met an Hijabite who was violated during 'the call to bar' the distant look of trauma on her face while describing that day is stuck in my memory till date. . She was narrating her experience after so many years of the incidence yet she is still traumatized. . I see the way you dress also gross, I mean I can see your ENTIRE shape outside, it is just as if the purpose of the clothe you are wearing is to serve as a paint over your skin. The whole of your body is seen only that the colour is partially cancelled by a piece of painting you call clothe, I for once never agree with your choice of clothing yet I WILL NEVER RAISE MY EYEBROWS AT YOU NOT TO TALK OF MY VOICE. . We wear a clothe that you do not agree with, but unfortunately your tolerance is DEAD, it is either you are yanking our nikab off in a physical aggression that has consumed you, which equals terrorism, or you are busy shouting on us like a mad dog has just bitten you, yet you will be busy defending your excessive madness SHAMELESSLY. . What kind of things are you exactly? You terrorize us, yet you call us terrorist, you master of intolerance call us intolerant, Kai. Your case is complicated. . In conclusion, if you are a Muslim and Christians in Nigeria are calling you tolerant, run back to Islam because you can ONLY be tolerant when you leave Islam in their own dictionary. . Let me educate you bigots on tolerance, I know you will not use the knowledge but I will still teach you. When you do not agree with what a group of people are doing yet you are in peace with it, that is TOLERANCE. The moment you find yourself getting discomforted the moment I start fasting in Ramadan, then you are intorant. . Has anyone noticed that the Christians have problems with EVERYTHING we do? If we pray they complain, if we fast they complain, if we eat they complain, if we dress they complain. They water down Islam so much that the hatred rooted in their heart against Muslim. I swear Na complaint go finish you. I WON'T CHANGE TO PLEASE YOU. Woe on any Muslim that leaves Islam to please you. PS. Nobody should tell me I am too harsh, I think what I term as "diplomacy" is now cowardice, I am past the age where I will cry in a corner whenever derogatory words are thrown at me, nowadays I stand up for myself. . I will never opress ANYBODY hence I will not allow anybody to opress me. -- Hamidah bint Abass. No you are not too harsh and not really surprised, normal for any brainwashed religious man to make this comment, just like the professor despite his education. |

FRESHG: PRESS RELEASE
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) observes that today’s holiday fully consolidated the two-day Christmas holiday and enabled Nigerian Christians to kick off the 2018 Christo-Western Gregorian calendar
However, conscious Nigerian Muslims, particularly stakeholders in the welfare of Muslims as well as the growth and development of Islam in Nigeria, approached today’s holiday with mixed feelings. First and foremost, we express happiness for our Christian neighbours who were able to spend the day giving full practice, expression and manifestation of their faith. On the other hand, we experienced a feeling of despair, isolation and marginalization. Our feeling of marginalization arises from the reality of the Nigerian situation which has conditioned Muslims in the country for religious segregation and subjected them to spiritual apartheid.
Here we are today, enjoying January 1st holiday which was declared by the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria in recognition of the Christo-Western Gregorian calendar. But the same FG which recognizes this Christian calendar is yet to declare 1st Muharram a public holiday in recognition of the Islamic calendar despite several petitions and appeals to it dating back to the 60s. Surprisingly, some people still complain that Nigeria is Islamised!
Professor Ishaq Akintola, Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC)
http://www.ishaqakintola.com/2018/01/give-muslims-their-own-1st-january/ Honestly religion makes this country sick, crying for Nigeria if this is coming from a professor then why blaming Shekau,no wonder some secretively are damn happy with Shekau and they rejoice with every successful detonated bomb and Ishaq Akintola is one of them a professor for God sake making this silly request instead of him to educate his members, this country is finished. |

He was a great goalkeeper in his days, forcing Best Ogedengbe to retirement by displacing him as number one at Abiola Babes but couldn't make it in the national team cos of availability of good keepers like Peter Rufai, Patrick Okala,Wilfred Agbonavbare. He would always be remembered in the history of Nigeria FA cup especially his heroic performance for Abiola babes in the FA cup final in 1985 and 1987 and historic own goal scored by Toyin Ayinla against Leventis United. Raymond King was a great rival to Edward Ansah of Leventis United, this was a period of good rivalry between Leventis united and Abiola babes and the two keepers were solid.Edward Ansah later kept for Black star but King had stiff competition from Peter Rufai, Agbonavbare Wilfred,Alloy Agu but if it's today definitely he would be the number one cos keeper like Ekena Ezenwa,Daniel Akpeyi are no match. |

Mujtahida: My dear forumites I pray you all to read this expose I want to do. Well, forgiveness you just put out the fact Eguavoen was playing in Belgium. Let's look at the condition of Fc kortrijk from 1990-1994 that Eguavoen was there: 1990/91 season they were fourth from the bottom of 18 team. 91/92 season they were 17 on the 18 team table and were relegated. 93/94 season they were still in relegation. He played two seasons in division one in a low ranking team and another two seasons in relegation. This is still better for you than famagusta that is topping the league in Cyprus and Ebuehi who is just two seasons in the Eredivise.
When I saw Iroha's wretched stats I just shook my head at your deception. Here are the facts people: Iroha was at Vitesse from 1992-1996.he played just 21 times for a period of 4 years. Verdict: correct benchwarmer. Meanwhile he had been playing professional football for seven years before this time.
Oliseh was at standard liege from 1990-1994, he played 75 matches and scored three goals. Now divide the number of weeks in the four years with 75.that would give you an indication of his regularity. As for his goals just 3. Yet you are comparing him with Ndidi who played for two years at Genk with 64 appearances and four goals and is barely a year at Leicester with 33 appearances and two goals (all Oliseh's facts are settled but Ndidi's are still unfolding but one can see who already has better stats. It's possible Oliseh did not play in those UEFA matches sef
Uche played for 9 years for Fernerbahce with 191 appearances and 19 goals. Quite solid.
1993-1995 at Anderlecht 14 matches no goals From his Wikipedia page: After three seasons he was bought by giants R.S.C. Anderlecht, who won the league twice during his stay. Nwanu played very few matches; he retired after an unsuccessful spell in RKC Waalwijk.. Truly no verdict.
7. Finidi George- Ajax
Verdict. Finidi of Ajax vs Victor moses of Chelsea. Even I wanted to run away from this our first champions league winner Finidi but I still checked:1993-96, 85 appearances 18 goals. VicMo has been more of a journeyman. Hard to put his stats together. In any case he doesn't play offensively for Chelsea. But when I checked their stats for the Super Eagles I was shocked: Finidi played for the Eagles from 91-2002(11 years) played 62 times and scored 6 times. VicMo has 28 appearances with 10 goals. I just weak
8. Daniel Amokachi - Club Brugge is the second most successful club in Belgium. The first and only Belgian club to reach the Finals of European cup. Prior to the time Amokachi went there in 1990 they had reached the semi finals of UEFA cup in 1988, won the league in 1988 &1990, won the Belgian cup in 1986 and won the Super cup in 1986, 1988, & 1990 before Amokachi helped them to win the league in 1992, the Belgian cup in 1991, the Super cup in 1991, 1992 and 1994 and finaly helped them to reach the semi finals of the cup winners cup in 1992 after his club had dumped out Athletico Madrid in the quarter finals. He even scored a goal the winning goal against Werden Bremen in the First leg of the semi finals. His performance didn't go unnoticed in 1992, 1993 and 1994 which won him 2 Ebony awards, Bronze Ebony award, Best foreign player in the Pro league award and the Bronze APOTY award.
Verdict: He played in the best club in Belgium Pro league and in the top 10 clubs in Europe. The pedigree of the club and individual laurels he won didn't portray him as average.
Amokachi vs Ighalo, vs Iheanacho vs Nwakaeme. TKO Amokachi is an outstanding average player. Seriously.
9. Rashidi Yekini- There is no sense in trying to prove that he was a superstar in both Africa and Europe because doing that will be a mockery to African and European football. He was the best and second best player in Africa for two straight years going in the world. The best player of 1994 AFCON and 3rd best in 1990. The highest goal scorer in two AFCON already in 1994. The top goal scorer in Nigeria, Ivory Coast and highest goal scorer in the 4th best league in Europe in 1994. These were his individual laurels before going to the WC.
Verdict; no contest else TKO to Ighalo, Iheanacho and Nwakaeme. We all love Rashidi. He is great. But by your standard and that of komekn, Rashidi who played just one season of first division football in Portugal will not smell Super Eagles team. Your adulation of him smacks of hypocrisy. It is we who insist that clubs should not be used to screen out good players whose adulation of him is authentic. You opposed Nwakali just because of his club. You would have jettisoned Rashidi for Ekoku since Ekoku was in a more fancy club.
10. Samson Siasia. He moved from the 5th best league to the 2nd best league in Europe. Nantes was the third best club in France as at the time he went there and became the champions of Ligue 1 the next season. They even reached the semi finals of the UEFA Champions league in 1995. The point is Nantes was a potential candidate to win the league at that time because they already won their 6th league title in 1983, runner up in 85 & 86 and within the top 5 in 1992 & 1993.
Verdict; A proven goal scorer in the Belgium league moved to the second best league in Europe full of best footballers in Europe. Samson vs Iheanacho. Fatality Let us look at Siasia you have used to bullet Iheanacho. Siasia was at Lokeren for six years from 1987-1993. Played 151 times and scored 31 times. Now let's look at him at Nantes. He was there from 1993-1995. He played 44 times and scored 4 goals. Iheanacho played 46 times at City and scored 12 goals. So who has better stats? Moreover note that Siasia had been playing professional football for ten years as at the time of his stint with Nantes while Iheanacho is just four years in the game In the gwg Siasia played from 1984-1999 that is 13 years, appeared 51 times with 16 goals. Iheanacho has played from 2015 for the Gwg 13 times with 8 goals and he has not done even half of Siasia's time in the team. Verdict: out of respect for Siasia let me keep quiet.
[b]11. Emmanuel Amuneke. The best African player going to the world cup. Zamake was the best club in Africa.
Verdict, no contest else fatality on Simon, Iwobi, Etebor and Ahmed
Keep trying.
I checked Amunike's stats and that of Musa. Amunike's stats is just a bit better. Amunike won APOTY at zamalek playing 71 times and scoring 26 goals from 91-94. Musa did not win APOTY yet look at his stats for CSKA Moscow:2012–16 125 appearances, 42 goals. This should tell us how low the level of football in Africa was as at 1993.
Bottom line is that the 94 set were not better both for club and country more than this set as such. We have not even talked about those in the 94 set who were not in the first 11 ooo. But in the end such comparisons are deceptive because one set is done and dusted. Another is still unfolding.
However we can all see that it's through the soft eyes of a blind lover that forgiveness and komekn looks at the 94 set. The reality shows a completely different picture when compared to this current set. What I think is that football has improved so much from that time(personally I still prefer the 90's football but then I recognise that football has improved) and that is why the 94 set looks so glorious (plus they won Afcon) and this set looks ordinary in the eyes of some.
Cc For record sakes let me tag you guys. Goodjoe, icon4s, Safarigirl, Joebie, Kog45, Goldfish80, daveP, kennysville, realpoacher, tbaba1234 My man you are still on this matter.Well let me add this cos you want to hear my view. Honestly i don't want to talk on it again, everyone to his opinion and we must respect it but if simple discussion is leading to a stage as if we want to win WC i put stop to it and move on but due to respect i have for you let me chip in some words. Pls i need to make some clarifications here and it will take a very intelligent and unbiased minds to understand my very simple point related to 94 set and present team. I don't compare the two teams cos it's not yet time even i still rate Keshi 2013/14 team ahead of this present team based on their achievement but that does not mean i should ridicule Rohr team, they are just evolving so need for comparison. On US 94 have made my comments and i still stand by it that the team was full of average players but as a team they look solid which we all saw at Afcon and US 94. I don't think there is need for me to go to archives and be digging things out cos i followed the team passionately during Westerhoff era(89-94)it all started in Yaoundé against Cameroon and ended with Italy in US 94. I folliwed the development of the players, how they are faring in their club sides especially Peter Rufai since Afcon 1984,Samson Siasia which i rate highly since 1985 U 20 WC in Moscow,Stephen Keshi who i followed since Libya 82,Rashidi Yekini since shooting star days,Austin Okocha since Mauritius 93,Mutiu Adepoju since Saudi 89 qualifiers played in Adamasigha stadium, Amokachie at Ranchers Bees due to my love for their Argentine coach Dominiques,i followed Amuneke since cairo 91 and i had great relationship with Mutiu Adepoju,Jayjay Okocha,Tijani Babangida through a friend,i remember telling icon4s that Tijani was taken to US 94 as a standby player even Ikpeba was nearly dropped for him.To cap it all i handled Clemens Westerhoff utilities and we do talk if he get the chance before he left Nigeria. I'm saying this for you to know that i should be biased but i will not cos we need to put the record straight and not to run the present team down cos some certain players are not in the team.I should be here shouting Dele Aiyenugba up and down due to our close relationship,i was involved in his first professional contract as a player with Kwara star before moving to Enyimba and he still see me as a senior.Taiwo Awoniyi is like a son,Obafemi Martins a great pal to me through my junior cousin whom they shared the same agent in person of Churchill Olishe but have never come here to solicit for their inclusion in the team. I don't think there is need to patch things up to express my opinions. It's my opinion based on what I know not based on oral history or secondary source. Pls check this out 1.Peter Rufai. was a bench warmer with Go Ahead Eagles and later released before WC 2.Ben Iroha made just 21 appearance between 92-96 for Vitesse Arhemm 3.Austin Eguavoen couldn't tie a regular shirt with Kortrijk prior to WC and was released after WC. 4.Chidi Nwanu truly second African best in in 92/93 season with SK Beveren but got mid season transfered to Anderlecht and played just 9 games for Anderlecht prior to WC.later made additional 5 games and was released too 5.Samson Siasia was warming the bench throughout his stay at Nantes sitting down for Chad boy Japhet Ndoram and Patrice Loko. 6.Mike Emenalo was a non league player just like Sunday Sunday game prior to WC 7.Emeka Ezeugo a India based player who later joined Lyngy in Denmark 8.Uche Okafor who joined Hannover 96 in division two but always on the bench 9.Thompson Oliha playing for African Sports after moving from Asec memossa. 10.Efan Ekoku solid at Norwich but a misfit in Eagles. 11.Victor Ikpeba not regular with Monaco 93/94 12.Austin Okocha in and out of Frankfurt Germany 13.Alloy Agu second choice in his Turkish club 14.Stephen Keshi already passed his prime at molenbeek. 15.Wilfred Agbonavbare good in his club Rayo Vallecano but second choice in the ational team. I need to leave out Rashidi Yekini who was then reigning APOTY and solid with Vitoria Setubal,Sunday Olishe great form before WC,Mutiu Adepoju regular with Santander,Finidi George great with Ajax,Dan Amokachie superb with FC Brugge,Uche Okechucwu regular with Fernabache nd Emma Amuneke solid with Zamalek, meaning we have just solid 7 regular players in US 94 squad leaving out Oliha,Ekoku cos they don't look solid in eagles. Pls rate this players for God sake based on their performance in 93/94 a season before US 94 World Cup.Honestly it was cos of this i appreciate their performance at US 94 so why not give Rohr team a chance and let see what they can do instead of unnecessary comparison. |

Pls, don't say they are average if you don't have facts to back it up.

forgiveness: Then it is good you speak the thruth.
I started watching football at national stadium in 1984 and am very sure the Belgian league was among the top 5 in Europe because it was very popular in the late 80s due to the fact that many clubs from their played in the finals and semi finals of Cup winners cup, European cup and UEFA cup. Truth?pls stop insulting me and move on,am not here to mislead but to discuss football the way it is and was,so i still repeat it prior to US 94 our players are not superstars. |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Kog45(m): 11:52am On Dec 30, 2017 |
forgiveness: Since you can't define average, I would like us to reason a little?
Which league in this era can we compare with the Belgian league if that era?
It is very easy to say France because PSG and Monaco dominated this era in the French and even in Europe while Anderlecht and C. Brugge dominated in Belgium and in Europe in that era. And the both were/are rated within the top 5 - 6 leagues in Europe if we compare then and now.
Anderlecht and C. Brugge were even better than the current PSG and Monaco of today.
Having said that, can we say Mbbape is an average player?
If not, then how can you say Victor Ikpeba, Daniel Amokachi and Chidi Nwanu were average players?
Victor Ikpeba won the Ebonyi award in the Belgian league which was among the top 5 in Europe in 1993 before he moved up the ladder to the top 3 leagues and one of the best clubs in Europe.
Daniel Amokachi also won the Ebony award and the best foreigner award in Belgium twice and came third btw 1992- 1994. Don't forget that Club Brugge reached the UEFA champions league finals not too long and the semi finals of cup winners cup in 92. They were just like the Monaco of today and that was the club he played for prior to the WC.
Chidi Nwanu was played for Anderlecht prior to the WC and he was the Silver winner of the Ebony award after he came second behind Ikpeba while Daniel Amokachi was third in 1993. Don't forget that Anderlecht was in the finals of cup winners cup in 90 and reached the quarter finals of UEFA cup. They were among the best of course.
Rashidi Yekini was the highest goal scorer in the 4 or 5 best league in Europe in 1993. Don't forget he was the top goal scorer in the lucrative Nigerian and Ivory coast league. He had won the highest scorer award in two AFCONs and won the best player of the tournament in 1994 though he was the third in the previous tournament. Oh! A one time AFOTY and runner up at as 1994.
Emmanuel Amunike won the best footballer award in 1994. Zamalek was also a force in Africa.
Stephen Keshi already played for Anderlecht.
What is the rating of the Belgium league of these days?
Can you compare it to that Belgium league of that era?
Were is the average players here?
Pls don't deceive the ignorants here. Pls am not here to flex muscle or to deceive anybody and it's my opinion which nobody can changed.I did not watched US 94 as a kid but as a full grown up man,so let me be not necessary to be on the same page. |

Icon4s: Then are you sure Nwanneri was in that team? I think google should say it all cos it was high profile match and i remember Amodu has pool of home based CBs like Seyi Ogunsanya, Romanus Orjinta,Sani Abacha,Eric Ejiofor, Seyi Olajegbensi,Obinna Nwaneri,Alphonsus Ezimoha, Friday Ejedegba. Hope you also remember a match involved home based against best Africa side that paraded new Liberia President George Weah,Taribo West,Kallon,Okocha, Kanu,Diof and the likes played at national stadium. Good old days of home based. |

junnyjake: Or maybe another argument would be made that the Belgian league of the 90s isn't same as what's obtained today. Well may be for guys who are just watching the game not for someone like me even in the 90s the league was not that rated except for Anderlecht who are solid during Keshi era,i remember they played against Sampdoria in European cup final and losing 2 nil with Vialli scoring a brace. |

Icon4s: That is the index player to ascertain when that game was played
If Nwanneri was in that game then it was played after Enyimba won the 2003 CAF champions league. Because Obinna Nwanneri and Onyekachi Okonkwo were invited to the SE following Enyimba's success at that year's CAF champion's league It has already be confirmed by tgloba that it was played in late 2002 to mark the remembrance of people that die in ferry mishap in Senegal. |

komekn: Disagree when Amokachi was at Brugge he was being courted be several EPL teams at the time. After the World Cup his rating went further upwards.
How many if our current players are first team players and crucial players in top clubs in Europe
Compare the current team to the pre millennium set of players and thier is really a big gulf in quality. My man US 94 team remain the best and no need to compare but this present team deserves little respect. Yes Amokachie was a great performance at Cercle Brugge just like Oyekwuru doing it with Anderlecht even as at that time Belgium league was a little bit rated than present Belgium league, pls before we argue this roll out Belgium clubs performance in European competition since 1990 to date. Mind you Victor Moses is a first team player and very crucial to Chelsea.Iwobi is doing it with Arsenal though not a crucial member. Remember it was only Finidi George playing for Ajax and also crucial to the team and Chidi Nwanu with Anderlecht which cannot be compared to Anderlecht of Keshi who played in the final of European cup final now Europa against Sampdoria. If i may ask you who are the players playing in top clubs and very important to their team among US 94 squad. |
