A 🇺🇸 U.S Army helicopter crashed at a military base in Alabama on Wednesday afternoon killed one person and injured another, military officials said.

An AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed during routine flight training on Fort Novosel Army base, about 94 miles (151 kilometers) south of Montgomery, according to a statement from the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel.

The crash killed the flight instructor, while a US. Army student pilot was airlifted to a hospital for additional evaluation, according to the statement.

Dale County Coroner John Cawley identified the deceased instructor pilot as Daniel Munger, 46, who was a contractor and retired from the Army.

Military authorities did not immediately provide any information about the circumstances of the crash. The statement said the accident is under investigation.

“Our primary concern is the welfare and health of the student pilot and care and concern for the family of the deceased,” Major Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commanding general, said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

The AH-64 Apache is a two-crewmember aircraft.
Okay... Now OP, I had a hunch it was gonna be your post when I saw the headline on the NL homepage and it turned out to be so. I've realized that you always get a burst of dopamine rush when American military planes crash. I wonder the kind of thinking and energy that makes you engage in all these gloatings?

I remember the PH couple that lost all the 3 of their teenage children, a son and two daughters who were students of the Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja (they were all flying back for holidays with other students from their school in Abuja). The Sosoliso plane had the delectable Bimbo Odukoya onboard as well when it landed, crashed and burst into flames during a bad weather in the 2000s. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde's pilot husband actually flew that plane from Lagos to Abuja before the flight took off again with another set of pilots from Abuja to PH.

Those who lost all their children in that plane crash or via school bus accidents had to start having children all over again after therapy sessions with psychotherapists.

Having 10 children is even NO absolute guarantee that they will all not pass on before the parents do. There are esoteric permutations in this life that are beyond the understanding of the average human on the street level. The most important thing is to live a fulfilled life and don't ever be afraid to write a will from the age of 40 years so that you can start tidying things up with regards to your assets and liabilities.

Piping gas from Imo or Delta Igbo to Lagos and calling it innovation is mere cheating since the citizens that own the gas are not paid a dime.
I have to step this very moment because what you posted is CLEARLY FALSE! A lot of you Ibos keep recycling these same FALSEHOODS online and offline that the natural gas Lagos State uses is from Imo or elsewhere in the South East Iboland, but this is INCORRECT. I have to address this topic today so that the disinformation from the propaganda and secessionist Websites young and impressionable Ibos get these deliberately FABRICATED stories from will stop! I've been a member of Nairaland since 2005 and I know you well from back in the day to be a rational guy but in the last 2 years, I noticed a penchant for you to make flippant allegations laced with some form of hate or sarcasm. I must state here and now that indeed Imo State (which is where you are from being that you are an Aguta indigene) has large UNTAPPED gas reserves and It's impressive that Imo State gas would feed industries and CNG cars down the road, but this disinformation that natural gas is piped from Imo or other areas in Iboland to sustain Lagos is highly irresponsible and disrespectful to the people of Itsekiriland (who are ancestrally blood relatives of the larger Yoruba people who are indigenous to Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo). Just to emphasize again, the Itsekiris are a Yoruboid group that is largely made up of Ijebu, Ilaje, and Ife (Ufe) ancestries with some Bini-Edo exiled immigration in 1480 through Prince Ginuwa [who was eldest son of Oba Olua, the 14th Oba of Benin (1473–1480 CE) and Heir Apparent to the throne of the Benin Kingdom] and 70 of his lieutenants who were sons of 70 noble men and settled in an Ijebu community called Ode Itsekiri, Omadina is another Itsekiri community led by Chief Lenuwa whose folks spread out originally from Ijebu Waterside area now in Ogun State several centuries ago. The Ijaws of Delta State too have oil and gas reserves and are not making these kinds of spurious and fabricated claims on Nairaland or on other social media platforms!

Read the FACTS Below About the Escravos to Lagos Pipeline System from the Website.

The Escravos (Ugborodo is the real Itsekiri name of that area NOT Escravos) to Lagos Pipeline System supplies natural gas from the oil and gas-rich Itsekiriland in Delta State to Lagos State. There is ALSO another gas pipeline that supplies gas to other countries in West Africa that flows from the same Delta State axis.

Background
The 36-inch Escravos to Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) is a natural gas pipeline built in 1989 to supply gas from Escravos in the Niger Delta to various consumption utilization areas. Although the line starts at NGC's gas treatment plant in Warri, piped gas originates from Chevron's Escravos gas plant in Delta State It supplies gas to power plants in the South-west and also feeds the West African Gas Pipeline System, which is a component of the larger Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline.[4]

Escravos–Lagos II Expansion
In April 2019, NNPC's Group Managing Director announced plans to build an expansion, Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System II, which would double the existing pipeline's capacity to 2.2 billion cubic feet per day. Construction was expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020.[8][6][9] In February 2021, the NNPC announced that the expansion project, described as a "looping of the Excravos–Lagos Pipeline System", was complete.[7][5]

Gas pipeline debuts in Eko Atlantic City

By Sebastine Obasi
August 7, 2024

A 5km natural gas pipeline network has debuted in Victoria Island, connecting Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, courtesy of Axxela Limited and NGML.

This milestone marks a significant achievement in Axxela and NGML’s ongoing 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project, which will span from Victoria Island to the Lekki metropolis. The newly commissioned 5km pipeline network traversing from Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach is the first phase of the project and is expected to connect customers from Five Cowrie River by Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp, all the way to the proposed Lekki International Airport.

According to Kehinde Alabi, Axxela’s Chief Operating Officer, “The commissioning of the first phase of this ambitious 72.5km pipeline network underscores our commitment to expanding natural gas infrastructure within the Greater Lagos Area. By connecting Eko Atlantic City to first gas, as a pioneer customer on this axis, we are paving the way for more access to the natural gas advantage; providing reliable energy solutions that can aid economic development. For us at Axxela, we are not only fueling businesses, but we are enabling the development of self-sustaining clusters, whilst strengthening Nigeria’s socio-economic growth”.

Also speaking, Justin Ezeala, Managing Director, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), “Over the past two decades, NGML and Axxela have been renowned for their pioneering efforts and immense contribution to natural gas advocacy, this expansion project is a further reaffirmation of our partnership and dedication to natural gas infrastructure development across Nigeria and Africa. We are optimistic that advancing the natural gas pipeline network to the highly commercial Victoria Island and the rapidly developing Lekki area is a step in the right direction”.

Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City, David Frame, highlighted the significance of being the first customer to be connected and benefit from the project. “This development not only ensures a more efficient, stable, affordable and reliable supply of energy for our power generation needs but also sets a good benchmark for modern urban living. Beyond the immense socio-economic benefit, the sustainable nature of natural gas aligns with our vision of creating a future-ready city that prioritises energy efficiency and environmental sustainability”.

“The collaboration between Axxela, NGML and Eko Atlantic City will help the urban coastal city meet its energy needs efficiently and reliably. Eko Atlantic city is currently developing a 60MW capacity gas powered plant infrastructure which is expected to be commissioned in the coming years. As this futuristic city expands, its power requirements are substantial and critical for both residential and commercial activities. Axxela, a market leader in natural gas processing, distribution and power development, brings extensive experience of delivering piped gas to about 200 industrial and commercial customers via a vast natural gas infrastructure network.”

Eko Atlantic City, also known as Nigeria’s International Commercial Centre, is an innovative coastal city located in the heart of Victoria Island. With its grand infrastructural design that houses world class, large scale financial, residential and commercial developments, the city has become an undeniable hub of economic opportunities. This new city development embodies self-sufficiency and sustainability with cutting-edge urban planning, power generation, advanced engineering and technology.

Upon completion, the project will deepen domestic gas utilisation as companies, and businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor will have access to pipeline network infrastructure and natural gas will be readily available for utilisation across various market segments including cooling, feedstock for industries and decentralised power solutions amongst others.

This is truly impressive.

It'll take Lagos State one notch higher as an international business hub. The gas would feed the greenfield industries and other users within those areas of Greater Lagos.

Nigeria's Tobi Amusan just created a new world record for the women's 100 metres hurdles event, at the ongoing World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon, United States of America.

The Nigerian sprinstar ran the distance in 12.12 seconds to beat the previous record holder, United States K. Harrison who came second with arise of 12.17 seconds.
Tobi spoke into existence in a tweet on Twitter (now X) on arrival in America to start her education as a freshman at the Uni in Texas. She said that she was gonna be known worldwide. In 2022 in Oregon, USA, she broke the world record in the 100 meters hurdles in a legal time of 12.12 seconds.

I believe Oluwatobiloba Tobi Amusan will do again and win her FIRST ever Olympic gold medal in Paris 2024.

If she doesn't get it in a worse-case-scenario, the reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico will get gold.

Congrats to the golden girl on her stellar performance during the semi-finals of the sprint hurdles yesterday.

She's now successfully in the semi-finals after winning her heat in a quick time of 12.49 seconds.

Destination Paris 2024 Olympic gold medal for the world record holder Oluwatobiloba "Tobi" Amusan (if the reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico doesn't get it).

Teach them once more you're NO fluke "golden girl." Ijebu Ode and folks of Nigerian descent worldwide will rock just like the iconic image of "Steeze" rocked Ijebu in 2024.

The current world record holder in the 100 meters hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds set since 2022 in Oregon, USA, Oluwatobiloba "Tobi" Amusan (who is based in Texas) won her heat yesterday and she's now in the semi-finals.

She is gonna make it to the finals and win an Olympic gold medal. In a WORSE case scenario, she'll win silver medal in that sprint hurdles event if there is an upset because she is one of the 3 big dogs in the sprint hurdles.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games ends on Sunday August 11, 2024, so there's still hope for all folks of Nigerian descent worldwide to celebrate an impending Olympic gold medal from Tobi being the world record holder.

Cheers.

I am not here to abuse anyone however I do get annoyed at statements that imply or suggest bigotry of any group of people in Nigeria.

To your point about the name "adetsina". This could be likewise be a mispelling on the part of South African home affairs officials when registering this girl or her father as I have seen this happen several times on the many a Nigerian persons documents. It is a hassle to correct such errors so the father probably left it as such.

None the less we all know what the name means in Yoruba regardless of the spelling.
I will be very CLEAR here. In that post, you used the Yoruba word "Olodo" which means a "stupid person" or "dullard" instead of having a healthy convo... That was an overt abuse. As an older man, I have very little patience for those who try to use sophistry or speak to others impulsive without internalizing issues before speaking. It detracts from any other positives that they spit out.

Your last paragraph is a strong possibility. We'll see how things pan out down the road in unraveling her mother's citizenship claims.

Is her father yoruba or Igbo? I'm trying to make sense of the name 'Adetshina'
I can't make a sense out of that spelling combination with a letter T as well. Her "opaque" father who is alleged to be a Nigerian is not known yet. Only he can add more clarity to his ancestry because NO family in Nigeria or in the Diaspora Yoruba population centers in the UK, United States, Canada, France, Cote d'Ivoire, etc, uses the spelling combination Adetsina. The ONLY other spelling I see is "Adeshina" with an "H" but "Adesina" is the STANDARD Yoruba spelling. Heck, even the iconic British-Nigerian singer and 1986 Grammy Award winner Sade Adu (who was born in Ibadan with a London School of Economics and Political Science graduate father and an English mother who trained as a registered nurse) uses the correct spelling of Sade and NOT "Shade" with the letter H used by a few.

One other thing is that if her mother is really a South African citizen, the beauty contestant should have used a South African name given by her mother's lineage in combination with her supposedly Nigerian-derived surname to blend with her potential South African fans.

Well see how things pan out down the road for them all.
FashionRe: Fraud, Identity Theft Committed By Chidimma Vanessa's Mother - SA Home Affairs by Konquest:
Sepukku:
THe olodoness in this write up simply shows how you do not understand that names and surnames are transient. As people move from one place to another so do the formation of their names, Yoruba or not. There are several different spellings of Yoruba names in sierra leone and Togo so stop your Biogotry.

As for Chidinma's case. The rule of Law must take effect in South Africa. If her mother obtained her citizenship by fraud i.e. identity theft then it MAY be an issue upon her daughter's citizenship.

However,In the case of this young lady it is likely she is still a citizen of South Africa based on other applicable laws in South Africa i.e. being her physical birth in the country, the legal status of her father, her turning 18 years old and applying for citizenship by naturalization e.t.c otherwise she becomes stateless or defaults to the citizenship of her father who may be a legal resident or citizen at this point.

Her mother on the other hand may be in deep S**T.
I will respond to your post because I remember seeing your moniker on the thread of that young SA girl who was very active but deactivated from NL. I remember you saying that you lived in SA.

First off, you responded very impulsively and unwisely to my post with your negative adjectives which detracted from the positives that you stated there. Learn to state your point WITHOUT casting aspersions. I was proof-reading my post and ADDED more CLARITY and specifics to it by re-editing that post and it was after doing so that I saw your mention.

As an internationally well-traveled man, cosmopolitan and a multicultural person, I know full well that dialectic variations exist within linguistic groups and ethnicities. The Yoruba name "Ketu" in Nigeria is spelled as "Ketou" in Benin Republic because of the Anglophone and Francophone interferences. "Amadu" is used in the far North of Nigeria but just right across the border the spelling changes to "Amadou" in Niger Republic because of the same Anglophone and Francophone influences. Just as I stated in my re-edited post BEFORE I saw your mention, because Itsekiris are directly and ancestrally related to the larger Yoruba people, the Itsekiri names Omatsola and Omatseye (both with the letter T) are dialectic variations of the Yoruba names "Omosola and Omoseye." The name Oma and Omo mean the same thing and they both mean child in Yoruba language. The Ilajes of Ondo State use Oma in their Yoruba dialect and they share direct land, creek, and ocean boundaries with their Itsekiri blood relatives and cousins in Delta State.

So, you are right about variations in spellings BUT in the case of this SA girl, since we have read that the girl's father is from NIGERIA, I stand firm in my submissions that the name "Adetsina" with the letter "T" is NOT a common spelling combination in all Yorubaland either in Nigeria, Benin, Togo, or in major Yoruba population centers in Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire (I made my first ever visit by commercial airplane to the well planned and beautiful city of Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast in 1987 to attend an international conference and was pleasantly surprised to see a large Yoruba Diaspora there with most being from Ejigbo in Osun State and other Yoruba cities who have been present there for over 100 years now doing international trade, and engaging in other professions), Sierra Leone, Gambia, etc.

I will end my convo here and now.
FashionRe: Fraud, Identity Theft Committed By Chidimma Vanessa's Mother - SA Home Affairs by Konquest:

The name 'Adetsina' too is an identity theft. As for South Africa, you are welcome to the world of roller coaster, this is what Yoruba have been dealing with. They steal and cheat with heavy propaganda and if you say anything, you are called haters. The best thing is to blow them away like dust and not entertain them at all before you start dealing with sob stories day in day out. For your sanity, don't allow them take part in your events, they don't appreciate anything.
There is NO such name as Adetsina (with a letter "T" among the Yoruba people) but the correct spelling is Adesina. I believe very strongly that NO Yoruba father would bastardise his family surname and add a letter "T" to Adesina. The only Yoruboid folks that I know who add "t" to their names are the Itsekiris who have Omatsola, Omatseye, etc, which dialectically are similar to the Yoruba names Omosola and Omoseye. Oma being a dialectical derivative of Omo. Oma and Oma both mean the same thing for a child.

Likewise there is NO such thing as "Antetokoumpo" among the over 55 million Yoruba people spread worldwide BUT Adetokunbo. Even the Greeks don't know the meaning of that name "Antetokoumpo" because it's NOT a Greek word.

So, MORE information is needed about the backgrounds of these people to know how they derived their names while grappling with the issues of citizenship. I'm curious to know how the SA beauty contestant got her different ethnic name combinations and WHO her REAL father is and his surname. This should also serve as a lesson to those people who like funkifying their names with different combinations or changing their family names abruptly because doing so has legal implications down the road.

Tbh, the DSS and other Intelligence Agencies have to move in immediately to work hand-in-hand with Nairaland and other social media platforms to smoke out these sewer rats from their hiding places. If it is necessary to change the leadership and structure of the Intelligence Agencies like the DSS to track down those fueling ethnic hatred and spreading FAKE news online using YouTube, X, NL and other social media platforms, then that must be done ASAP.

What happened in the UK recently with all the violence, the burning of mosques, and looting of stores by hooded White gangs was triggered by fake news from right wing elements from the English Defence League via social media who thought the 17-year-old boy who stabbed 3 girls to death in England and injured others is a Muslim immigrant. It turned out that he is of Rwandan parentage and was actually born in Wales and he is NOT even a Muslim. If the UK police had revealed that boy's true identity on time, perhaps the vicious violence, arson and lootings by hooded White gangs in some UK cities would NOT have occured so soon.

These strands of dark creeps have been using the same tactics to relentlessly push out a lot of FAKE news, hate speech and toxic ethnic impersonations online right before and after the Nigerian protest started on August 1, 2024, so as to fuel ethnic tensions and destroy Nigeria. That's the plan of these insidious dweebs.

You certainly don't get it. Your first line shows you don't understand the gist.

If the headline was an An American born Nigerian wins gold for Nigeria. You position won't be same.
I know FULL WELL what the original post is all about. We all have different perspectives to issues and I simply gave my piece.

There's nothing spectacular about an American-born (or even a British-born) person of Nigerian descent winning an Olympic gold for Nigeria. Since the young lady wasn't able to represent Nigeria and consequently represented the United States where she was originally born in 1996, that's okay by me.

I'm impressed that the young lady won that individual silver medal for herself and her birth country the United States and that is what matters most.

The iconic soccer Dream Team won gold medals for Nigeria at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Chioma Ajunwa has won the long jump Olympic gold medal for Nigeria while still working as a police officer in Nigeria as well.

As of today, Oluwatobiloba "Tobi" Amusan has just won her heat in the sprint hurdles and already qualified for the semi-finals. 'Tobi is the current "reigning world record holder" of 12.12 seconds in the 100 meters hurdles since the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon USA. and she is set to rewrite the record of Gloria Alozie who also won an Olympic silver medal in that same event 24 years ago. 'Tobi will definitely win an Olympic medal for Nigeria at the ongoing Paris 2024 which ends on Sunday August 11, 2024. Any of the big dogs in the sprint hurdles between Oluwobiloba "Tobi" Amusan or Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico who is the current Olympic record holder of 12.36 seconds achieved in Tokyo in 2021 (The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics took place in July 2021 due to the COVID-19 lockdowns) in the sprint hurdles will win the gold medal.

I've relentlessly followed live Summer Olympic Games since the memorable Los Angeles 1984 games in California, and I've observed that there are times when Nigeria goes through these cycles of boom and bust for decades now like the global financial markets or global economic cycles. But a more sustainable sporting strategy will be achieved with stronger institutions and proper funding.

Greatzeus:
As at Today 7th of August 2024, Africa is the only Continent not represented amongst the Top 30 best performance so far.

In fact the best performing African country so far is Kenya at No. 33 with 4 medals, 1 gold 1 silver and 2 bronze.

Yet we have African athletes who nationalized and have won medals for their countries.
Africa is the bedrock of talent but not always utilized to the full potential. What is the problem really? Government, laziness or lack of adequate preparedness or what? Africa's performance so far is too poor.

Aliyutani:
A Journey to Remember: My NYSC Posting Adventure

Let me begin by saying that checking NYSC postings is not for the faint-hearted. I remember back in 2018 when I checked for my e-call-up letter. Prior to that, I sought help to avoid being posted to the South and North Eastern states due to the distance and insecurity in those regions. You know, in Nigeria, it's all about having the right connections. I was assured that I would be posted to Kano. So, when my friend Faruk called me to ask where I was posted, I confidently said, "Kano" before even checking. But fate had other plans; I was posted to Delta state. As soon as I entered my details and the webpage loaded, I saw "Delta," and I felt uneasy and disgruntled, which was quite unusual for me.

I'm about to embark on my NYSC journey. I lost my opportunity to enroll for the mandatory youth service of Batch B after the café guy, Ghali, played a trick on me. He short-changed me after taking my registration fee, using the money for personal expenses. After confronting him and threatening to report him to his boss, his superiors intervened and scolded him. A day later, he registered me for batch C, stream 2.

Fast forward to printing the slip; I immediately called my uncle, a cosmopolitan who has worked in the North, East, and West. He assured me that I had nothing to worry about. I remember him saying, "This will be your opportunity to see Nigeria's diversity firsthand." His words eased my fears. I couldn't afford any more disappointments, and Delta state was never on my bucket list.

Realizing there was nothing I could do to change my deployment, I resigned myself to my fate. Now, all I needed was information about the camp's location in Delta State. I called my elder brother, who had once lived in Port Harcourt, South-South Nigeria, to ask if he had heard of Issele Uku town in Aniocha North Local Government. After a brief pause, he replied, 'Yes, I have. It's by the roadside before you reach Asaba, the state capital,' he said. That was somewhat reassuring.

'Not to brag, but I know the region like the back of my hand,' Abdulrahman said. Abdulrahman hails from Edo state, which is a few hours away from Delta.

I booked an evening bus to Delta state, staying at the park until 9 pm before we hit the road at Television Garage. There was a brief commotion at the park when we heard a loud bang, and everyone scattered for safety, including the driver. Unbeknownst to us, it was a burst tire; bomb blasts were rampant at the time. After realizing what had happened, we all laughed it off.

With my headphones on, I immediately plugged in my phone to listen to the then-trendy music, pondering what lay ahead. While vibing and grooving to the music, I heard a loud thud. Our bus nearly veered off the road around midnight, sending shivers down my spine. The driver managed to hit the brakes, bringing the bus to a halt. All passengers, including myself, hastily disembarked. It took the driver about an hour to fix the hummer bus.

We reboarded the bus, this time with my senses on high alert, scanning the road. Along the way, the hummer bus developed another issue, with the front light failing to illuminate the road ahead. We were in a tight spot, and I couldn't help but wonder, "What if armed robbers were to target us?"

The front light was badly damaged due to the earlier accident. The driver, realizing this, called his co-driver and waited for us. We drove at a snail's pace to catch up with him. He provided us with backlight so that we could continue the journey until we reached Lokoja. We made a stop at Lokoja not only as a transit point but also to offer our prayers.

After fixing the front light, we continued our journey. I noticed the driver discreetly handing money to soldiers manning the checkpoints we passed. I wanted to ask but kept quiet like a spy.

The Okene road was in terrible condition, and it took us hours to get past Okene. I noticed enormous palm trees along the way. We arrived in Benin City at dawn, where I observed tombstones in front yards and statues carved to honor the deceased. That marked the beginning of my culture shock.

We arrived in Delta State around 12 pm. The vegetation is lush green, with gigantic canopy-like trees. I took a taxi that dropped me off at Aniocha North Local Government Area. The taxi, upon reaching there, dropped me by the road. From there, I hopped on a motorcycle to Issele Uku NYSC Orientation Camp. We haggled over the fare, settling on N100. I informed the bike man that I had to go to the camp and was aware of the standard fares. Later, I found out that motorcycle riders often charge as much as N500 per trip.

Upon reaching the camp, I disembarked from the motorcycle and picked up my bags at the gate. I showed the soldier my call-up letter to gain access. I immediately joined the registration and documentation queues. After completing the registration, I was shown the way to the hostel. I belonged to Platoon 3 (Humility).

I was excited to see people from diverse cultures and ethnicities. Nigeria is truly diverse. I learned about the culture and traditions of Deltans, who are known for their hospitality.

NYSC camp is like a military barracks, where those in charge decide what you eat, wear, when you sleep, wake up, and even your mobility is programmed as well. We were woken up early in the morning for parades and in the scorching afternoon for various forms of physical exercise. The camp commandant called me and Sakina 'water bottles,' a military term for individuals of small stature and petite build.

A camp is a place where a well-mannered person can become promiscuous. When I realized this, I acquainted myself with well-mannered and culturally diverse friends, and in camp, I learned to become more tolerant. It's a place where the haves and the have-nots mingle. I remember that the half-sister of the then Kwara state governor was in the camp.

Sakina and Fatima are Yoruba girls from Osun state, while Victoria is from Ondo state. They are nice and down-to-earth ladies. I was able to clear up some misconceptions about the North. I also set some boundaries in the camp; I stated that no one should call me 'Aboki' because it is derogatory to me. When someone refused to comply and called me 'Aboki,' I responded with 'Alade,' a Hausa word for pig.

I remember a day when I barged into a conversation with an Igbo girl, Esther. She claimed she had never been to the North. She said her dad warned her to stay away from Northerners, as according to him, they are evil and have no regard for the sanctity of human lives. Her dad planted a seed of hatred for the North, but during camp, she learned about the North firsthand and even wanted to visit after NYSC. We had a lengthy conversation and instantly became friends. I also had another encounter with a South Easterner, and I was able to educate her about the North. She seemed pleased.

I also met those who are espoused to the Biafra ideology and cultists. I was able to pinpoint them during our debates. One day, my friend Aminu from Katsina rushed to the place where we normally hang out to rest under a tree. He was shocked and fidgeting. From his countenance and body language, I could tell that something was amiss.

"Do you remember that tattooed guy with a strong physique and a strange hairdo?" I asked. "I saw him drinking a black, thick concoction with a half-naked lady in the bush, and I also saw a deity-like figure," he said. "Yes, I do," I replied.

My mind then wandered in thoughts. I remembered my altercations with him. What if he hunted me, I said to myself discreetly. I think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill; there's no cause for alarm, I concluded quietly and unnoticed. I mustered some courage and continued my path of bravery, even though my heart was palpating.

I joined the cultural dance troupe and drama group. That's soothing; at least I can now avoid the parade; it's exhausting. To avoid the parade, I normally hide in the toilet until I hear no more sound before coming out.

"Hey! I haven't been seeing you at the parade," I said. "I'm like MTN everywhere you go," I replied to the soldier. He smiled. "From today onwards, we'll have cultural dance rehearsals. The dance group is for those who are removed from the parade for one mistake or another.

We learn how to play and beat the drum. We came first in the drama display. I played the role of a police officer.

I, Muhammed from Jos, feigned sickness in order to get relocation, despite Sakina and Fatima's advice. They tried to talk us out of this.
We were all homesick, missing our friends and family.

Upon passing out, I noticed that Fatima and Sakina were teary-eyed. I was moved to tears too inside the bus we booked. That same fate returned to Kano where I was posted to SDY Engineering and Construction Company in Bompai, Kano. I made friends, who are more than friends, both in the South and North, all thanks to NYSC.

I missed Delta State. I missed their food, and I came to realize this: "Truly, Warri no dey carry last.

That's a deeply enjoyable and well-written piece... No typographic errors.

"Aboki" simply means "Friend" in English so you shouldn't consider it derogatory. Or if you say "Aboki na" which means "My friend" in English, that CAN'T be termed derogatory.

What jumped right at me is that you said "Alade" is a Hausa word for pig... But what has to be emphasized here is that the word is a loan word which is etymologically derived from the Yoruba word for pig which is "Elede."

Ashana is another word in Hausa for match sticks which is etymologically derived from the Yoruba word "Isana" which is match sticks. There are about 20 Hausa words that are loaned from the Yoruba language.

Conversely, there are loan words from Arabic or even Hausa in Yoruba language as well because of the over 500 years presence of Islam in Yorubaland (Oyo Empire) which originally came into Yorubaland from the Mali Empire hence the older Yoruba name "Esin imale" meaning "the religion from Mali", due to the fact that the Oyo Empire engaged in long-distance trading in kolanuts and more with the Mali Empire, Ashanti Empire, and Hausaland via the Nupe country where horses were brought in for the use of the powerful Oyo Cavalry military conquests.

The thread gives insights on unique multicultural experiences which I like to read as a well-traveled person myself.
CultureRe: Similarity In Some Nigerian Languages by Konquest:
yinka902:
there is a lot of similarities in our native languages in Nigeria. for example: Yoruba and Hausa, Yoruba : Olele while in Hausa: Alele, Yoruba: Isana, Hausa: Asana. Yoruba : Agbalumo, Hausa: "Agwalumo"...
Bump.

Those are some of the loan words incorporated into Hausa language that are derived directly from the Yoruba language.

Yorubas also have some loan words derived from Arabic. But these few Arabic loan words in Arabic also have Yoruba original equivalents that are used simultaneously.

The Hausa people refer to it as Agwaluma, a term they adopted from the Yoruba language, rather than "Agbalumo." This is because there is no African star apple native to Hausa Land. One local enduring sobriquet is derived from the Yoruba agbalumo, i.e., 'agbaluma,' and is used in certain parts of Nigeria.

May the Force be with you
A catchphrase adapted from the media franchise Star Wars, in which it is used as a blessing that invokes "the Force" (a metaphysical power capable of being wielded for good or evil) to protect or guide the other person. In general use, the phrase is often a humorous way of wishing someone success or good fortune.
A: "OK, I'm heading off for my final exams." B: "Oh, wow. May the Force be with you!"
A: "Tom is traveling for work, so I'll be taking care of the kids by myself this weekend." B: "Oof, may the Force be with you."
