Music/Radio › Re: BBC World Service To Start Broadcasting In Igbo And Yoruba by Konquest:
nyabingi:
The BBC World Service will launch 11 new language services as part of its biggest expansion "since the 1940s", the corporation has announced.

The expansion is a result of the funding boost announced by the UK government last year.

The new languages will be Afaan Oromo, Amharic, Gujarati, Igbo, Korean, Marathi, Pidgin, Punjabi, Telugu, Tigrinya, and Yoruba.

The first new services are expected to launch in 2017.

"This is a historic day for the BBC, as we announce the biggest expansion of the World Service since the 1940s," said BBC director general Tony Hall.

"The BBC World Service is a jewel in the crown - for the BBC and for Britain.

"As we move towards our centenary, my vision is of a confident, outward-looking BBC which brings the best of our independent, impartial journalism and world-class entertainment to half a billion people around the world.

"Today is a key step towards that aim." The plans include the expansion of digital services to offer more mobile and video content and a greater social media presence.

On Wednesday the BBC launches a full digital service in Thai, following the success of a Facebook-only "pop-up" service launched in 2014.

Other expansion plans include: extended news bulletins in Russian, with regionalised versions for surrounding countries enhanced television services across Africa, including more then 30 new TV programmes for partner broadcasters across sub-Saharan Africa new regional programming from BBC Arabic short-wave and medium-wave radio programmes aimed at audiences in the Korean peninsula, plus online and social media content investment in World Service English, with new programmes, more original journalism, and a broader agenda

Fran Unsworth, the BBC's World Service director, said: "Through war, revolution and global change, people around the world have relied on the World Service for independent, trusted, impartial news.

"As an independent broadcaster, we remain as relevant as ever in the 21st Century, when in many places there is not more free expression, but less.

"Today's announcement is about transforming the World Service by investing for the future.

"We must follow our audience, who consume the news in changing ways; an increasing number of people are watching the World Service on TV, and many services are now digital-only.

"We will be able to speed up our digital transformation, especially for younger audiences, and we will continue to invest in video news bulletins.

"What will not change is our commitment to independent, impartial journalism."

The new language services mean the BBC World Service will be available in 40 languages, including English.

Lord Hall has set a target for the BBC to reach 500 million people worldwide by its centenary in 2022.

"The Igbo-Igala Borderland: Religion and Social Control in Indigenous African Colonialism By Austin J. Shelton"

Subjects: African Studies
Paperback : 9781438450766, 274 pages, June 1971

Description
This ethno-historical survey of the northern Nsukka borderland examines particularly one method of African colonial control. When, in the late eighteenth century, the Igala conquered the indigenous Igbo, they gained and held social control through monopoly of certain religious positions. However, despite conscious effort to maintain Igala religious lineages, these gradually became Igbonized. In delineating this religious-social control, Professor Shelton describes extensively border conditions and the nature of Igbo life in the Nsukka area. He dwells particularly on the Igbo religious framework which includes well-disposed, beneficent spirits and more capricious and potentially more hostile outside spirits called alusi. The invading Igala installed their own men as priests, or attama, to the dangerous alusi, thereby becoming the sole mediators between these spirits and the Igbo. Since the attama also controlled most divination, which is employed to explain any unclear or mysterious phenomenon, there was no essential social activity the Igala attama could not influence.

ABOUT ASABA
Geographically, nothing seems to connect the Igalas in Kogi State with the Ibos of Asaba in Delta State and the Ibos of Nteje in Anambra State, except perhaps networks of inter-state and inter-city roads. But historically and biologically, something connects them. What we know today as Asaba has its historical roots in both Kogi and Anambra State.

A woman named Diaba from Agbakuba village in Nteje, Anambra State, was said to have been impregnated by Onojobo, a prince and trader from Igala land, while she was residing in Eze Anyanwu’s court as one of the court girls.

Anyanwu was said to have hailed from the royal line of Ezechima, the legendary ancestor of numerous settlements east of the Niger, including Onitsha. This explains why Benin, Asaba and Onitsha seem to share a common culture and tradition as in the area of festival regalia like traditional coral beads and hand-woven big flowing white gowns and traditional titles such as the Onowu Iyasele of Onitsha and the Iyase Onowu of Asaba.

The Igala connection
Going back to the Diaba story, after she was impregnated by Onojobo, she was delivered of a male child called Nnebisi, a name which some Asaba sources interpret as “mother is supreme”, same as “Nneka”, in some parts of Iboland, but which Chief Patrick Isioma Goodluck Onyeobi, the Iyase of Asaba, disagrees with and rather claims to be a shortened form of ka anyi nebe isi nke a (let’s watch and see what this one becomes in future). Sunday Sun believes that Onyeobi’s interpretation is nearer to the truth as the names “Nnebisi” or “Nneka” are usually names reserved for female children in Ibo land.

“We’ve always had contact with Northern elements here because the founder of Asaba descended from an Igala prince”, notes Onyeobi. “We’ve always had contact with traders coming from the North as well as the Aboh traders coming from the South. They used to meet at the river bank here we call Igala bank. Nupe and Igala traders used to row down to bring fishes and other things. Our people were mainly farmers and slave traders. And these people used to come in long-range canoes to Asaba where they exchanged goods. So, it isn’t quite true when European historians tell us that our people were in perpetual conflicts. Though there were occasional conflicts, they intermarried.

“ Otherwise how could an Igala prince come to Asaba and marry a woman from Nteje. So, Asaba has always been a sort of meeting point and it will be instructive to know that it was near Asaba that the Lander brothers were captured in 1830 and later exchanged and given back to their brothers who used to come from the coast. So, it was a small community and peaceful then. We were never conquered by any group either from the East or West.”

With the exception of one of the major and longest roads that run through Asaba town, Nnebisi, named after the accredited progenitor, no other son or daughter of Asaba bears the name “Nnebisi” in Asaba today or had ever borne that name, at least in living memory, ever since the origin of Asaba as a people and later as a town. This only goes to show the extent to which Asaba people rever that name. They see him as something of a deity.
But lest we forget, we are still on with the story of the origin of Asaba. Shortly, after the birth of Nnebisi, his mother took him with her, while she was going back to Agbakuba village in Nteje. There she died, leaving Nnebisi in the care of her family relations.

"MEGA-EARTHQUAKE: CALIFORNIA At Risk Of SINKING In Devastating Megaquake[VIDEOS]"

Federal, state and military officials have been working together to draft plans to be followed when the 'Big One' happens.

These contingency plans reflect deep anxiety about the potential gravity of the looming disaster: upward of 14,000 people dead in the worst-case scenarios, 30,000 injured, thousands left homeless and the region's economy setback for years, if not decades.

As a response, what planners envision is a deployment of civilian and military personnel and equipment that would eclipse the response to any natural disaster that has occurred so far in the US.

The Big One may be overdue to hit California, but scientists near Los Angeles have found a new risk for the area during
a major earthquake.

They claim that if a major tremor hits the area, it could plunge LARGE PARTS of California into the sea ALMOST INSTANTLY!

The discovery was made after studying the Newport-Inglewood fault, which has long been believed to be one of Southern California’s danger zones.

The fault runs under densely populated areas, from the Westside of Los Angeles to the Orange County coast.

A view of the San Andreas fault in the Carrizo Plain. Scientists from California State University Fullerton and the United States Geological Survey found evidence the older quakes have caused the land to fall by three feet!

Documentary Definition : San Andreas Fault Earthquake Prediction [Full Documentary]

San Andreas Fault [Discovery Channel]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxPTLmg0ZCw

Major earthquakes on the fault centuries ago caused a parts of Seal Beach near the Orange County coast to sink 3ft in just seconds.

In total three quakes over the last 2,000 years on nearby faults made ground just outside Los Angeles city limits sink as much as 3ft.

Today that could result in the area ending up at or below sea level, said Cal State Fullerton professor Matt Kirby, who worked with the paper´s lead author, graduate student Robert Leeper.

The study showed that land within major Californian seismic faults could sink by 1.5 and three feet instantly.

The last known major quake occurred on the San Andreas fault in 1857.

Seismologists estimate the 800 mile-long San Andreas, which runs most of the length of the state, should see a large quake
roughly every 150 years.

'It´s something that would happen relatively instantaneously,' Kirby said.

'Probably today if it happened, you would see seawater rushing in.'

The study was limited to a roughly two-square-mile area inside the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge, near the Newport-Inglewood and Rose Canyon faults.

Kirby acknowledged that the exact frequency of events on the faults is unclear, as is the risk that another quake will occur in the near future.

A report from the U.S. Geological Survey has warned the risk of 'the big one' hitting California has increased dramatically.

Researchers analysed the latest data from the state's complex system of active geological faults, as well as new methods for translating these data into earthquake likelihoods.

The estimate for the likelihood that California will experience a magnitude 8 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years has increased from about 4.7% to about 7.0%, they say.

~~~~~~~~~
PLANS FOR 'THE BIG ONE'
Federal, state and military officials have been working together to draft plans to be followed when the 'Big One' happens.
These contingency plans reflect deep anxiety about the potential gravity of the looming disaster: upward of 14,000 people dead in the worst-case scenarios, 30,000 injured, thousands left homeless and the region's economy setback for years, if not decades.
As a response, what planners envision is a deployment of civilian and military personnel and equipment that would eclipse the response to any natural disaster that has occurred so far in the US.
There would be waves of cargo planes, helicopters and ships, as well as tens of thousands of soldiers, emergency officials, mortuary teams, police officers, firefighters, engineers, medical personnel and other specialists.
'The response will be orders of magnitude larger than Hurricane Katrina or Super Storm Sandy,' said Lt. Col. Clayton Braun of the Washington State Army National Guard.
@Rozaytee
You're a brilliant babe... and you've got self-worth
and self-control. I like that in a woman.
Love your response to the TRASH from that so-called church priest!
I mean... there is nothing wrong in a priest wooing a babe if he is NOT
from the celibate group, and is serious. It's the method he used, and the
circumstances that seems irritating... It's very obvious he has been doing the
SAME thing to vulnerable young ladies in the past who have come to meet
him for personal counselling.
Sometimes... self-determination and the inner resolve to get over
ones demons or addictions is the BEST way to resolve issues without
going to many of these "so-called religious priests" who are NOT fully
equipped for some of these challenges that people face in
their lives. Some just went into religion because they wanted to
get out of poverty.
@MsNgo40
It's great YOU brought the earthquake topic
up smiley
I have already created a separate thread on this
California earthquake, and the likely SINKING
of California in a megaquake!
There is a major Earthquake Fault Line called
the "San Adreas Fault Line" which is very visible
on the earth's surface in California?
San Andreas Fault (Discovery Channel)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxPTLmg0ZCw
There are some organisations and people that have left
California and relocated to other parts of the U.S.
because the "BIG ONE" will still occur and this has
been in the public domain among seismologists and
geologists. Some have tried to downplay the situation
by saying that the likely sinking of parts of California
will NOT happen but it's better to be on guard.
Give me $10billion for free to live permanently in
California, and I won't take it. Did you know that
it's been predicted for long that major parts of
"California State will SINK" into the Pacific Ocean because
the Pacific coast of the U.S. is experiencing "subduction"
or "sinking" as a result of earthquake and volcanic
activity!
This is NOT being ALARMIST... It is what it is!
I can ONLY "ZOOM in and out" of California but not
stay permanently!
San Diego and San Francisco have witnessed
very devastating earthquakes in the past
and I would not advice anyone to make major
long-term investments in that area... although
California can be very beautiful and alluring.
I hope I have added some illumination to the topic?
Asking me about crime level in Chicago is like asking someone living and working in Lagos how they are dealing with Boko Haram.
Some very disturbing videos have been shared online showing black men being tortured and according to unverified reports the men are African slaves in Libya.
The videos allegedly surfaced on a website in the Midle East and they were reportedly posted by the Libyan slave masters, though this has not been verified. The video is going viral with a lot of outraged people calling for the United Nations to get invoved.
One of the videos shows a naked black man writhing in pain as a masked man burns his back with liquid fire. Another shows four men getting whipped on their bare backs. The back of one of the men was terribly torn from the lashing.
I don't understand. You speak an indigenous african Niger Congo language.
Live exclusively in West Africa.
Phenotypically more like stereotypical Africans than probably any other west African ethnic group.
Your DNA shows you're 100 percent indigenous Saharan African with no non sub Saharan African admixture.
Yet somehow you believe this bull jive that you're not indigenous Africans?
WOW! 150 million! grin
It's very likely that the figure for Hausa speakers
is near-absolute! Hausa is also an easy language
to understand if you are determined to learn it.
A good population census will help to resolve
this with a proper biometric database instead
of guestimates.
Will do more research on the post.
