Plateau state alone should able to provide a huge chunk of our food supply because of the favorable climate in the middle belt, there's almost nothing you can not grow in that region. You can grow Avocado, grapes for wine, tomatoes, coffee, potatoes, apples, wheat, barley and strawberry.....
I read this article about strawberry farmers languishing and perishing their product because of poor demand and lack of storage facilities...
[s]A year ago this reporter traced a community where strawberry is grown in commercial quantity. Some readers were surprised to know that the fruit grows here in Nigeria. One year after, the reporter returned to the community to see what changes have occurred, what new technology has been brought into the farming of the crop; and whether the product’s marketing challenges have been solved.
From Vom in Jos South, driving through the dust-red road, which passes in front of the main gate of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, one sees open fields of cultivated land and of the recently done harvest . That journey will take you a few kilometres and then you will start noticing pockets of dry season farmers. With a simple question as to the location of strawberry farmers, you will get direction into the heart of strawberry farms on the outskirts of Chaha village. Strawberry farming, which until recently, is not a common practice here in Nigeria, is now the most important produce that shapes the economy of the people of Chaha, where almost every adult has a strawberry farm. The farms are also surrounded by coffee, and avocado farms whose owner, I am told, lives abroad. Chaha seems to have huge potentials for strawberry, coffee and other fruit trees, as a visit to the community convinces one. With the cold weather that characterises the highland of Plateau State, the ground favours the production of strawberry, which has now been domesticated in the village since 2001. The fruit has the potentials to breed new generations of millionaires in Chaha if access to market is broadened, because the farmers are between the ages of 20 to 35. Gyang Matthew Victor is the Secretary, Chaha Strawberry Farmers Association. He reiterates that a lot of farmers want to expand their farms, but access to markets is the major challenge. Victor, who has a hectare of the product, harvesting 300kg twice a week, laments that unavailability of storage facilities ,worsens the situation, pointing out that “you cannot keep the fruit for even two days, if you don’t have where to store them.” The 32-year-old farmer stresses that you have to have somebody who is willing to buy the product before you harvest the fruits from the farm, and “if you don’t harvest, it will spoil.” “I harvest about 600kg weekly, but I end up selling 400kg because you have to give ‘Jara’(an extra on the quantity bought) to the women buying,” he says. His counterpart, Haruna Dagwong, a civil servant who started strawberry farming last year, believes the women who hawk the product in the town are the backbone of the farmers. His reason has been that the women are the only ones who buy this product from them. “If they are not here we can’t sell, and we can’t keep it as well. Where are the cold rooms?” he asks. The 29 year old government worker said he would have resigned if the market for strawberry is strengthened ,because one can generate huge money if he expands the farm. Dagwong posits that having cold rooms for storage and linkage to markets, will be the greatest thing to happen to the lives of the farmers who are not only found in Chaha, but also elsewhere on the Plateau. He opines that all the youth in the area can avoid crimes by farming, if the market for the product is there, adding that if a person buys 5kg, you end up giving him or her 6 or 7kg. The civil servant produces over 200kg which he said ends up getting money for only 150kg, because according to him “the rest are given as incentive to motivate the buyers.” For Christopher Elvis Choji, a 21-year-old student of the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, the future for strawberry farmers is bright if only government provides a cold room facility and links the farmers to markets. “We don’t just know where else to sell this product ,but we are told that the demand is high in some places in Nigeria. Most of our farmers here have not travelled outside Plateau State,” he noted. The young farmer emphasizes that he would want to grow the farm he started last year and become self-reliant, rather than move around looking for jobs after graduation, because according to him, government is struggling to pay salaries these days. Isaac Michael, another young farmer ,shares Christopher Choji’s opinion on rather remaining in the farm than looking for a government job ,if access to markets or a cold room storage facility is made available. “Even if we have to pay to store our product, it will be a welcome idea. At least we will sell when we want. Now, we can’t because we don’t have these facilities, and no company is here to solve this problem,” Michael worries. Currently, strawberry is at the peak of production and sells for N700 per kg. During early harvest in December, it sells from N1000 to N1, 500 per kg. So with this market challenge, how are the women who are merchants, selling this product? I put that question to Mrs. Sarah Ishaya, one of the women selling the crop. Speaking in Hausa, she tells me: “We buy from the farmers here and sell along the major high ways, particularly at major security check points.”[/s] The 35 year old mother of five says a lot of travelers get surprised when they see them selling the product. “They often ask us whether it is imported or produced here in Nigeria. When we say it is done here in Jos, they marvel,” Mrs. Ishaya stated. She makes between N500 to N600 as profit for every kilogramme she buys at N700. The money she says, keeps her relevant to the family. With huge potentials for money seen everywhere in Chaha-for coffee, strawberry, Avocado and other vegetables, proper intervention by government or a meaningful private initiative, will definitely present a win-win situation for the farmers and the government and/or investors. But for now, some of the big malls in the country are busy importing the product, while our farmers here don’t have where to sell theirs. The Plateau State Government can generate millions from the red fruit, if the state could, on behalf of the farmers, link them to markets. It will apparently deal with the volatile situation and reduce the urge to commit crimes by youth in the state.
watts75: Plateau State could simply be tagged the home of Irish potatoes because of the chilled and favourable weather condition that favours the cultivation of the root crop. No wonder Irish potatoes are grown in commercial quantities in Mangu, and Bokkos Local Government Areas of the state. These two area councils of Plateau state alone can feed the entire country and beyond with Irish Potatoes cultivated in commercial quantity from the area.

laudate: Your input on this thread would be most welcome. I do agree with a lot of things you said. In fact some of the companies you mentioned, have already been profiled on this thread.
Fut Concepts set up by Olumide Wole-Madariola has been profiled on page 215. Am surprised he doesn't have his own website yet though, considering the volume of business he does.
Yiko Deen by Atunde Olayinka has also been featured on page 213.
Shoespeed owned by Biodun Folawiyo can be found on page 133.
Proforce established by Adetokunbo Ogundeyin has also been discussed extensively on quite a few pages e.g. pages 9, 15, and 84
It would be really nice if you could share and upload information on companies, that are yet to be featured on this thread. Thanks again.

^^^^^^^ @ laudate Thanks for pointing this out. I think I will have to start using the Nairaland search function more often so that I don't make double posting of entrepreneurs on this thread.
laudate: True!! Your guys have nailed it down. The Yoruba people are doing quite well in the restaurant, hotel & hospitality business. Kola Adewale the owner of The Place had earlier been profiled on this thread. Kindly check page 201.
^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^
There is also a chain of restaurants in Atlanta, Georgia called Buka1 and Buka2. They are both owned by Babs Abraham, a Nigerian of Yoruba ancestry who previously lived and worked in the UK before moving to the U.S. Babs Abraham left the shores of Nigeria 17 years ago!
Buka1 was opened in 2005 while Buka2 which opened in 2012 on Riverdale Rd, Atlanta won the award for the BEST RESTAURANT in the ENTIRE United States in 2014 with the support of the American government!
Buka1 is mainly frequented by white customers while Buka2 is very popular with blacks including Nigerians. Nigerian delicacies such as amala, gbegiri and ewedu, pounded yam with efo riro, egusi, ogbono, asaro, ila alasepo, pepper soups - and suya!
He says business has been profitable for him in the U.S. and he visits Nigeria regularly to order for most of his ingredients.
laudate: Hi, there is a profile on Itele shoes on pages 123, and 130. The quality of their shoes has been discussed extensively on other pages as well.
Andela & Flutterwave have already been profiled extensively on pages 143, 155, 183, and 192
@laudate Thanks for the info in Itele shoes on pages 123 and 130... nice thread!
Olumide Wole Madariola also established the biggest ultra-modern shoe factory in Africa in Lagos in 2008 named Fut Conceptus at Coker-Orile geared for the export market.
Yiko Deen Footwear is also owned by a 28-year-old by the name of Atunde Olayinka. The company has produced boots for the Nigerian Army and Police.
Another guy is Shoe Speed by Abiodun Folawiyo.
I had done a lot of research over the past 15 years of innovative inventors and manufacturers and I compiled their names and to my surprise, the Yoruba and other Nigerians are very enterprising!
Some people falsely think Ibos are the only ones making shoes, cloths, fabrication of equipment in Aba or Nnewi, but this is the biggest lie. Maybe because Ibos brag or make a lot of noise and the Yoruba, Idoma, Edo, Hausa, etc, don't make a noise for the purpose of validation is the reason some people have this false illusion.
I will upload pictures and info from my database on Nigerians from SW who are major shoe manufacturers, fabricators who own multi-billion Naira companies and are quietly making money without bragging, bespoke suit and cloths makers, manufacturer of Armored Personnel Carriers in since 2013 in Ogun State [Proforce Ltd which is owned by Mr. Adetokunbo Ogundeyin, and they have supplied the Nigerian Army and other countries with their APC vehicle like PROFORCE 2].
Even in Ghana, there is an indigenous car maker of full Ghanaian origin, so nobody or nation is handicapped mentally and creatively if there is focus!
I respect the innovativeness of Yoruba people and more can be done even if the Yoruba have their own country which I estimate would just be slightly bigger than Sierra Leone in Area or land mass, but the new country will be a major force in Africa and internationally.
ugokofoagro: As we enter the 2017 planting season, plantain farmers nationwide are already out there seeking for hybrid and disease free plantain suckers to buy. Well, if you are one of those farmers, look no further than Kofo Agro allied.
At our farm based in Iseyin, Oyo state, we have constructed 50 macrochambers - to IITA standard- for the macro propagation of plantain suckers using the PIF technique. This technique has been certified by institutions such as IITA as the standard method for tissue culture and production of healthy and disease free suckers.
The process begins with the peeling of suckers, after which the apical dominance i.e meristem is removed. The corms are then placed inside the chambers filled with sawdust. The chambers are then watered regularly and in 6 - 8 weeks ,the corms start producing the suckers.
Also note that the plantain variety is of the false horn type, also called agbagba in local parlance.

aminulive: PoliticsNGR has obtained a video of President Buhari exchanging pleasantries with his media team as he received them in London, UK on Saturday.
In the videos, the President is seen shaking hands with his personal photographer, Bayo Omoboriowo and taking photos with the rest of the team. Buhari said that he will soon be back in the country but is only remaining in the Uk on the orders of his doctors.
SalamRushdie: If these videos were taken this week then I must say Buhari is not in any way incapacitated but he should still be impeached for absconding a critical duty post
^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ Why should he be impeached? He handed over constitutionally to the Acting President on 2 major occasions which former President Yar Adua never did.
He deserves to be applauded for that highly Democratic move!
What is annoying to most people right now is the very reckless behavior of the foreign Bororo Fulani who have ruined the lives of farmers and Agripreneurs on several states.
I saw the YouTube videos of a man 2 days ago in Edo State who had his N50 million large-scale farm ravaged by these criminal herdsmen who have to be banned completely from especially the Middle Belt and Southern States in Nigeria before people starve to death from food shortages!

The thread on the sorry state of Ikogosi warm spring resort came as a rude shock to me. I worked in Ekiti prior to the 2014 election and I know the facility was renovated by the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi 5/6yrs ago. I did some digging online and I was able to find pictures of the renovation if Ikogosi and it's access roads under Fayemi of APC.
Long story short, it takes little or no effort to destroy what has been built. That is why we as the electorates must open our eyes wide and differentiate between a good leader and the empty barrel. Enjoy the thread
MayorofLagos: Among the Igbo, one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups, there is widespread identification with Jews, and many see themselves as descendants of the biblical Israelites.
But a recent test to determine if a group of Igbo men share genetic material with Jews is back — and no connection was found.
Even before the results were known, the test was the source of heated debate among the Igbo. Now activists are decrying the enterprise, and the missionary American group that carried it out, as illegitimate.
“Our purpose for providing this DNA testing…was to assist them in their pursuit of truth concerning their historical lineage and identity,” Jonathan Bernis, head of Jewish Voice Ministries International, wrote in an email to the Forward. The DNA test results “did not support their claim to be descendants of the ancient people of Israel.”
Jewish Voice Ministries International is a Messianic missionary organization that appeals to “lost tribes of Israel” and people with Jewish heritage around the world to spread the message of “Messianic Judaism and the Jewish roots” of Christianity.
In March, the group carried out the test in collaboration with a local religious group called Redeemed Israel Community of Nigeria, gathering some 120 saliva samples of community members. The tests were carried out using kits from Family Tree DNA, a Texas-based company that sells genealogical analyses, including a focus on Jewish heritage.
The genetic test had been the source of fierce debate among Igbo members, some of whom questioned Jewish Voice’s ability to successfully carry out such a test and whether such a test would serve or hurt their cause.
“There is no DNA test for ‘Jewishness,’” Igbo lawyer and author Remy Ilona wrote in a lengthy Times of Israel blog post, which outlined his objections both to the group and what he sees as their faulty methods. Ilona has written a series of books promoting the thesis that Igbos are genealogical Israelites.
Onwukwe Alaezi, an author who first supported the effort, decried the Messianic group as saboteurs who came only to delegitimize the Igbo. “Whether the white fake Jews want it or not,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “Igbo are Jews.”

^^^^ Most Ibos have NO Jewish DNA anything! It is possible that some Jewish DNA may have strayed in to the larger black pool via the slave trade or some other migratory means but it is insignificant.
It is just like the urban myth you hear that Ibos are light-skinned but over 90% of Ibos that I HAVE SEEN have dark skin to chocolate skins with some that I have seen from around Umuahia being very light skinned.
Jews were involved in the slave trade and owned slave ships and were part of the slave ship crews that came to Africa, and since most of the white-skined guys came without women, they would have had affairs with women in Africa. This is my theory though fro anyone testing for Jew DNA.
The so-called Ibo identity is actually a MIXTURE of several ethnicities especially along the border areas of the "core Ibo" such as Igala along the banks of River Niger [Eri descendants of Igala blood in Nri, Aguleri, Umuleri, Nri, etc], Efik/Ibibio like in Ohafia and Ariba, etc.]
Even the RED CHIEFTAINCY cap worn by Ibos is of IGALA origin and was introduced to the Nsukka area by the IGALAS.
Igala language is even classified as a Yoruboid language, so I WONDER were the Jewish DNA is coming from.

"The issue of Ikas bearing Ibo names has always been the strongest contention for Ibos to insist Ikas are actually Ibos, but that is quite insufficient as most Nigerians of today bear english, scottish, greek and hebrew names without arguably being hebrews. But their choice of name as in the case of the Ika has largely being influenced by religion, social relationships and language dynamism."
"As for me, haven traveled the length and breadth of the Igbo nation and seeing haven known that the ibos themselves bear no similar origin, some in as far away Ebem, Ohafia claim Bini origin whereas a majority of them speak the dual languages of Efik/Ibiobio and the Ibo language, it is evident to me that the Ibo nation is not one borne out of the ideology of a common origin but a people of common socio-economic experience dwelling in the area defined as the East, Southern of Nigeria with a near common language that can be understood by almost 85% of the people dwelling in the region. As thus, I would, irrespective of the reservations of the very Ika, Anocha, Oshimili and Ndukwa people regard them as Ibos...this not because I know better who they are by origin than they know but because of my known ideology of what is called Ibo."
xxxtedyxxx: 3.You Don't Act Like A Boyfriend Material
Sounds familiar?
When you dont show the tendencies of being a boyfriend, girls will automatically friendzone you- I dont care whether you look like Brad Pitt. If you are cool and well groomed, you dont need permission to do somethings. You dont have to be good looking, just be looking good.
Can you call her nicknames like Sexy, Baby, Boo, BabyPie without fear? Without thinking or caring about what she would think? When you meet her, do you go for hugs or handshake? Side hugs or face-face hugs?
You can get easily friendzoned, just like Richard, when you dont act like a boyfriend from the outset. Think about it. You don't need permission to date or attract a girl. Nothing concerns you with her boyfriend or past relationships. Your only care, from the first few minutes of approach, is to act like a boyfriend.
You want her to be your girl, right? Have you ever asked yourself: "Am I acting like a boyfriend?" or "Do I have the qualities of a boyfriend?
Moreover, when you keep begging a girl to date you, asking her out without end- even after she has told you a blatant no already- you risk total rejection. Beautiful girls don't fancy desperate guys. If you are the desperate type, you are already on the steep highway leading to friendzone.
Play your own game and keep the attraction button pressed. With enough attraction and acting like a boyfriend from day one, she may open up about her boyfriend and she might not. If she does, no worries, just continue your game. Dont back out. If she doesn't bring her relationship status up, good for you. In any case, you must keep advancing like a soldier on a mission.
Some girls might want to have fun with you, but you asking: " Do you have a boyfriend", automatically kills all the attraction. You begin to make her rationalize her attraction for you, and she might even end up telling you a yes- even if she doesnt have a boyfriend.
Play your game tight. DONT BE LIKE RICHARD!
The process of getting locked in the friendzone is not rocket science. Women dont friendzone you without legit reasons. You must have either been too nice and invested too much, or failed to show you have boyfriend potential. Correct these three mistakes, and you will be amazed at how many girlfriends you will have to deal with.
Cheers. Till we meet again. I remain xxxteddyxxx.

The mainly foreign Bororo Fulani have NO REGARD for Buhari who is a House Fulani [FULANIN GIDA].
The problem was so severe during OBJ, YAR'ADUA AND the GEJ Presidencies and I thought with PMB being a Fulani, he would be able to resolve this quickly, but the only solution would be for all the state Governor to enact any form of open grazing in their states instaed of complaining.

Mbkite: I sincerely need to know our views about getting married at the age of 35 for men. Is it late to marry at 35?
^^^^^^^ Congrats to you...
You finally got on the Nairaland From Page today after 4 months of posting this HOT question on April 17, 2017!
On the other hand, men should get married at anytime before 50 years! SEAL got married to Heidi Klum at 43 years and several guys also got married in their 30s and 40s.
What if a man gets married at 24 years and loses his children in a fire, car accident or plane crash or illness from sickle cell like we have seen severally or in real-life situations?
NOTHING is set in stone on the face of this planet.
Angelparadise: Good for them they have to face their crimes.
Nairalanders and people at large should NOT believe everything they see and hear online and offline immediately [i.e., learn to be circumspect].
There also seems to be a concerted effort in 2017 to damage the image of the Western part of Nigeria by the sensational reportage online and in regular media of alleged criminal activities as a result of the Western Nigeria-based media reportage of every alleged negative news that flicks on the radar.
I also did some research online and offline and found out that there have been serial ritual killings all over Nigeria in the last 15 years but because of the vociferous/boisterous nature of the Lagos and Western Nigeria media, it is those in the WEST that get reported with sensationalism and the others from the NORTH, EAST and elsewhere do not get sensationalised. I full evidence of those despicable ritual killings that happened in the Far North [by Hausa or Fulani], South East, South of South, Middle-Belt, etc, but I won't post them here yet.
I just got to know this morning that this SENSATIONAL information is NOT CORRECT as published in the SUN and some dubious newspapers from some of the people who live in that area and coincidentally they were at the location because NOTHING incriminating like so-called body parts were found there by the police who I was told checked the tunnels/drains.
IT IS ALL MASS MEDIA HYSTERIA and also this false publication in the media/newspapers is uncalled for! The SUN and Telegraph newspapers of today are very guilty of splashing the false ritual den story with SENSATIONAL PICTURES on the front pages.
THIS is how several NEWSPAPER REVIEWS reported DIFFERENT RIDICULOUS and CONFLICTING FIGURES for those who were shot dead by assassins in the Catholic church killings in OZUBULU!
We need to start PUNISHING newspaper publications with severe financial/monetary fines for publishing and spreading false information and DEFAMATION!!
AIT, TVC and other TV stations that have NEWSPAPER REVIEWS also inardvertently help to spread these FALSE STORIES.

As the great philosopher Karl Marx once said, "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce."
This expression is most befitting the situation currently going in Nigeria today. The situation, of course, being Nigeria's developed paranoia concerning Igbo people.
The video details Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, talking about his 'Northernisation Policy'. In the video, Sir Bello reveals his feelings about Ndigbo, particularly his fears over an Igbo domination in the civil service sector in the North. Sir Bello's sentiments here were not particularly surprising at the time, considering that many Northern leaders were apprehensive about Nigerian independence for the same reason. However, what is rather surprising is the fact that many Nigerians still share these sentiments today.
Here's what Sheikh Ahmed Abubakr Gumi had to say about the presence of Igbos in the Nigerian Army:
Although Sheikh Gumi's anti-Igbo agenda is very clear here, what I'm more concerned with is the syntax here. Note that he says at the start of the paragraph "dangerous trend in promotions..." It's shocking that when he says "dangerous", he's not referring to any incompetence on General Ihejirika's part, rather the fact that he believes that Ihejirika was enlisting more Igbos into the army. In his eyes, the Igbo is intrinsically dangerous.
The danger associated with the Igbo and their supposed desire to dominate is something that, as Sir Ahmadu Bello suggests, must be dealt with swiftly and directly. The Igbo mustn't rise above his station. Whilst Sir Bello sought to deal with this situation by employing a "Northerner First" policy, others choose to stifle the Igbos by immediately shutting down any Igbo acts of dissent. A good example to use would be the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu's comments about Igbo residents daring to vote for a candidate he didn't endorse:
It's clear that the Oba was not accepting of any case of Igbo dissent here, even going to the extent of threatening to drown them if they went against his word. It's evident that the monarch, just like Sir Bello, feared the Igbos becoming too powerful in his jurisdiction.
To conclude, I'm worried about this ongoing trend as, just as Marx said, 'history tends to repeat itself as a tragedy first' therefore it is something that needs to be dealt with now.
^^^^^^^^^^^ The accusations have been the overbearing attitude of some Ibos by other Nigerians at specific points in the country's history from the 1930s to the present era. That is why the English- speaking Cameroonians chose to leave the Old Eastern Nigeria for Cameroon in 1961.
There was also before and after 1960, a strong movement comprising The Ijaws, Ogonis, Ibibios, Annangs, Efiks that wanted a separate Government devoid of "Ibo domination" and the movement was called COR [Calabar, Ogoja, Rivers] movement.
In the last book Chinua Achebe wrote, he also wrote about the tendency by Ibo to be loud and overbearing and engage in unnecessary exhibitionism. The Ibo men are perceived to exhibit this attitude of victimhood more.
It is actually not a case of Nigerians being paranoid, it is a case of the overbearing acts of some Ibos which others have found to be condescending in social, political interactions.
