The Minister of Information and Culture of Nigeria, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to criticisms trailing his recent pronouncement on steps being taken by the government to discourage the production of Nigerian movies and music outside the country.

In a chat with PT on Sunday, he said it was to tackle the exploitation of perceived loopholes in the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, NBC.

“The NBC code today as it stands has been exploited and not defined and that’s why movies being directed by Nigerians with Nigerian actors, actresses can be shot in South Africa and then brought back to be consumed in Nigeria.

All we are saying is that we are going to amend the code in a manner that it will not be possible for you to exploit any loophole there to go and shoot outside Nigeria film, music or programs that are meant to be consumed in Nigeria,” Mr. Mohammed said.

The Minister on Saturday said the government had taken steps to get the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, NBC to put an end to the trend of producing Nigerian music, movie and programs abroad. This however drew criticism from Nigerians who asked the minister to address the issue of government officials going for medical treatment abroad first before sanitising the movie industry.

However, the minister said the government had no ill-feeling in its move to dissuade Nigerian films from being produced abroad.

“It is not directed at any particular incident, every country should respect the local industry of other countries.

For example, in Ghana they introduced a law today that demands visiting actors to pay a thousand dollars to the government coffers while visiting directors and producers pay 5,000 dollars.

We must create an enabling environment and also generate revenue from our creative industry. The argument is simple, when you go to shoot a film offshore, you use the work force of that country to develop the capacity of that country and you improve the economy of that country and that is what we are trying to do here.”

If government had called for a round table talk, reached an agreement with the entertainment industry on what should be done and if government has done its own part, only then will issuing a threat to that effect make sense. I can assure you that under such situation no one is going to fault FGN.

Psquare can do better. They have all the privilege of driving home their demands. They are public figures with huge followers - their PR team has a lot of image to protect.
While there is freedom of expression, it's pertinent, their responses to public issues are subtled, else they kill their career abruptly. Some of the fans who hail their seeming bravely won't save them. The same govt has the power to make or mar anyone. Diplomacy is a skill in the hands of smart people.

This is why artistes like Psquare and representatives need to have a round table chats with the government reiterating their challenges and their demands. The government is trying but some people are frustrating the efforts in order to protect their selfish interest.

A+ artistes like Psquare can drive Public Private Partnership investment in the sector. Artiste Guild, Performing Musicians Guilds and other interest groups can drive impact in the industry. But sadly, these guilds are only interested in membership subscriptions. Such a myopic mission.

You cannot say anything here if you don't know what is contained in the syllabus. I have corrected and vetted questions that were to be written by Muslim students of a purely Islamic school. The subject was World History. And the questions contained a lot of questions on Jesus Christ and Christianity. I asked or the syllabus and saw they actually did some work on Christianity. This is a purely Islamic school through and through.

In my church, before being baptized, we spend two years in a catchesim class. We learn about major religions, including Islam. For you to be baptized, you must have a basic knowledge of Islam and other religions as well.

Since time immemorial, religious studies dig into other religions and cultures in order to fortify the students with information, history and faith. In my days (80s & 90s) of studying Christians Religion in School, even in Church, we were exposed to other religions and practices. We wrote exams about other religions. These were common place. I wonder why Nigerians make mountain out of molehill for a necessary national issue?

Where did you get your information that CRK/CRS was removed from the new curriculum? Nigerian misunderstand the whole concept of the new curriculum. Media is not helping in enlightening the public. They only care about giving a dog a bad name to hang him.

Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Religious Studies are still 2 distinct subjects to be handled by two separate teachers. These 2 courses are merged under Religious and National Values (RNV) which also has Civil Education, Social Studies and Security Education.
