See Their Price Range.Jubna Ads Choice Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha said this during a meeting with top officials of the ministry in Abuja. She urged the ministry’s leadership to adopt a private sector-driven approach, emphasising efficiency and productivity in fulfilling the ministry’s objectives. In a statement on Saturday by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister, Emameh Gabriel, she said there was a need for a result-oriented approach within the ministry akin to that found in the private sector. Onyejeocha said the shift was essential to fulfilling the proposed achievements outlined in President Bola Tinubu’s eight points agenda. She said: “We need concrete results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our programmes. Business as usual won’t cut it. We must work as people in the private sector; focused, accountable, and results-oriented. We are currently engaging development partners.” The minister emphasised the ministry’s crucial role in achieving the President’s agenda, aligning with six of its eight points. She said: “At the end of every week, I will like to have the report of every department. I have never been in the last position and I don’t want to find myself there. Everybody will fail when the Ministry of Labour cannot account for the people we took out of the street and employed. "The ministry is committed to taking immediate action to tackle poverty and unemployment. We will hold the Head of every department accountable for the achievements outlined in the president’s agenda. “Out of the eight Renewed Hope Agenda, Labour is concerned with six. We have a serious task to accomplish. So, we need to work hard on our template. I am passionate about reducing poverty in Nigeria, because our position is one that is directed to humanity. “Nigerians are tired of conferences, words alone are not enough. What we need now is result, and Nigerians need to see employment and empowerment. "I am no longer interested in teaching how to fish. I want to see the fish that have been harvested. Nigerians should see the fishes of those who were taught how to fish. Reduction of poverty in Nigeria is waiting for no date. So, all work against poverty and unemployment starts now.” https://thenationonlineng.net/were-committed-to-fixing-poverty-unemployment-fg/

By Kayode Oyero Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, says his principal has his gaze fixed on solving the myriad of socio-economic and security challenges in Nigeria. Gbajabiamila made this known on Saturday while briefing reporters after he voted in the House of Representatives by-election at Polling Unit 014, Ward 08 at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial School in the Surulere area of Lagos State, “Mr President, who I talk to on the daily, has no other thing in his mind than how to address the issue of insecurity and economic hardship. “He (Tinubu) has his gaze fixed on solving the problems. He met a lot on ground, we’ve had these issues for years, and I think we have somebody who would address those issues and address them well,” Gbajabiamila stated. The Chief of Staff also said the economic reforms of the Tinubu administration including fuel subsidy removal had become a must, adding that the benefits of subsidy removal will be reaped soon. Gbajabiamila was the Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2019 and 2023 and had won his re-election into the House for the sixth consecutive term to represent the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency during the February 25 National Assembly election before his appointment as Chief of Staff to the President mid-2023. Gbajabiamila, one of the strong allies of Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor between May 1999 and May 2007, resigned from the House of Representatives last June and the Speaker Tajudeen Abbas subsequently declared his seat vacant necessitating a bye-election in Surulere Constituency 1 to fill the seat. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/02/03/tinubu-has-gaze-fixed-on-solving-economic-security-challenges-gbajabiamila/

A chieftain of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Saturday, said it was time for Igbos to gradually start retreating and redirecting their businesses back to the South-East. Isiguzoro was reacting to a circulated online video of helpless Igbo traders at the Trinity spare parts market in Apapa, Lagos, on February 1, 2024, lamenting over their inability to salvage their goods and products. While describing the situation as disheartening, Isiguzoro said the organization was meticulously “documenting the systematic demolition of Igbo-populated markets in Lagos State,” adding that the body is “closely observing the distinct pattern of these demolitions.” A statement by the factional Secretary General of Ohanaeze, decried the use of state machinery against peaceful Igbo traders in Lagos State. According to Isiguzoro: “In light of these distressing events, Ndigbo must acknowledge that it is now time to gradually retreat and redirect their businesses back home.” The factional Secretary General urged President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State to urgently intervene and stop future demolitions. He added: “The relentless targeting of Igbo traders and their businesses under the guise of development is unacceptable. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo implores Igbo traders to relocate the headquarters of their businesses to Igbo land to avoid further complications arising from future market demolitions. “We fervently urge President Tinubu and the Governor of Lagos State to demonstrate true leadership by intervening decisively to protect the rights and interests of all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity.” https://dailypost.ng/2024/02/03/start-relocating-ohanaeze-on-demolition-of-igbo-populated-markets-in-lagos/

The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced Sunday their immediate withdrawal from the West African bloc ECOWAS, saying it has become a threat to member states. The leaders of the three Sahel nations issued a statement saying it was a “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States “without delay”. Struggling with jihadist violence and poverty, the regimes have had tense ties with ECOWAS since coups took place in Niger last July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020. All three — founding members of the bloc in 1975 — were suspended from ECOWAS with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions as the bloc tried to push for the early return of civilian governments with elections. The sanctions were an “irrational and unacceptable posture” at a time when the three “have decided to take their destiny in hand” — a reference to the coups that removed civilian administrations. The three nations have hardened their positions in recent months and joined forces in an “Alliance of Sahel States”. The leaders’ joint statement added that 15-member ECOWAS, “under the influence of foreign powers, betraying its founding principles, has become a threat to member states and peoples”. Under pressure from the military regimes, France has removed ambassadors and troops and watched Russia fill the void militarily and politically. The French army’s withdrawal from the Sahel — the region along the Sahara desert across Africa — has heightened concerns over the conflicts spreading southward to Gulf of Guinea states Ghana, Togo, Benin and Ivory Coast. The prime minister appointed by Niger’s regime on Thursday blasted ECOWAS for “bad faith” after the bloc largely shunned a planned meeting in Niamey. Niger had hoped for an opportunity to talk through differences with fellow states of ECOWAS which has has cold-shouldered Niamey, imposing heavy economic and financial sanctions following the military coup that overthrew elected president Mohamed Bazoum. Niger’s military leaders, wrestling with high food prices and a scarcity of medicines, have said they want up to three years for a transition back to civilian rule. In Mali, the ruling officers under Colonel Assimi Goita had pledged to hold elections in February this year, but that has now been pushed back to an unknown date. Burkina Faso, which has not been put under sanctions although Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in September 2022, has set elections for this summer, but says the fight against the insurgents remains the top priority. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/01/just-in-burkina-mali-niger-pull-out-of-ecowas/amp/

By Nadeen Ebrahim and Vasco Cotovio, CNN CNN — Divisions within the Israeli government are deepening after war cabinet minister Gadi Eisenkot suggested the key war aim of defeating Hamas is unrealistic and called for elections within months. "Those who say that there was a major blow and demolition of the capabilities in the north of the strip are telling the truth,” Eisenkot told told Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 News on Thursday evening. “Those who talk about an absolute defeat and lack of will and ability do not tell the truth. This is why there is no need to tell tall tales.” Eisenkot was speaking shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again said Israel’s military campaign would continue until it achieved “complete victory” over Hamas. His comments also come after Israel withdrew some troops from northern Gaza and signaled a new phase of the conflict would begin soon. But Eisenkot said: “A strategic achievement was not reached … We did not demolish the Hamas organization.” The remarks are the latest symptom of rifts within Israel’s coalition government, as well as growing discontent with Netanyahu’s war plans. Established shortly after Hamas’ brutal October 7 attack, the Israeli war cabinet includes some ministers already at odds with one another. Calls for fresh elections In his interview, Eisenkot said Israel needed fresh elections because the public no longer has trust in Netanyahu’s leadership. He also dismissed concerns over holding elections in the country while it’s at war. “Lack of trust among the public in its government is no less severe than lack of unity during a war,” he said. “We need to go to the polls and have an election in the next few months, in order to renew the trust as currently there is no trust,” he said. “The state of Israel is a democracy and needs to ask itself, after such a serious event, how do we go forward with a leadership that is responsible for such an absolute failure?” While the cabinet was created to show unity, it “does not disguise the fact that there are already major differences in policy and approach,” said Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) in Jerusalem, adding that these divisions are now surfacing. Reuven Hazan, political scientist at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that as the war passed the 100-day mark, divisions would inevitably emerge. “And they have,” Hazan told CNN, adding that “the lines between the two camps are getting worse and worse every day.” Over three months into Netanyahu’s war on Gaza, there is no end to the conflict in sight. Israel began its campaign after Hamas launched surprise cross-border attacks, killing 1,200 people and seizing more than 240 hostages. The Israeli authorities believe that more than 100 are still alive in captivity, after 105 were released during a temporary truce in December. Dozens of hostages have been killed and their bodies remain in Gaza. In the meantime, more than 24,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in the enclave, and swathes of the territory have been flattened. Hazan says the Israeli government has decided it has two goals in this war, which may not both be attainable. “One is to destroy Hamas, and the other is to return the hostages home,” he said, “And as we’ve seen, after over a hundred days, you cannot achieve both.” Eisenkot said the government had failed to achieve what he says should be its highest priority: securing the release of the hostages. “There’s no question for me what task is of highest priority,” he said. “There’s no dilemma: for me, the mission is to save civilians (hostages) before eliminating the enemy,” Eisenkot said, adding that there would be time later to eliminate Hamas. A poll by Israel Democracy Institute conducted in November found that while Israelis overwhelmingly support both defeating Hamas and retrieving hostages, they see the return of the hostages are more important. Tensions with US over Palestinian statehood Israel’s relations with its strongest ally, the US, have also been on a downward spiral. On Thursday the Israeli prime minister voiced a strong rejection of a post-war scenario that entails the creation of a Palestinian state, which the US and other countries have called for. The idea of creating a Palestinian state would clash with the security of Israel, Netanyahu said. Netanyahu has made clear his opposition to a Palestinian state several times prior to his remarks on Thursday. “In any arrangement in the foreseeable future, whether with or without an arrangement, the State of Israel must control the security of all the land, which is west of the Jordan River,” he told a press conference in Tel Aviv when asked about reports that he told US officials he opposes the idea of Palestinian sovereignty that would encompass both the West Bank and Gaza. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/01/19/middleeast/eisenkot-netanyahu-israel-war-politics-gaza-intl/index.html

By Bolaji Jimoh The growing level of insecurity in Abuja has been attributed to the directives of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike to demolish the dwellings of the impoverished. The Abuja-based human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju made this claim in a statement issued on Friday. According to him, because their livelihood had been destroyed, they turned to kidnappings and other crimes in the nation’s capital to make ends meet. The statement reads, “Rather than adequately relocating these individuals and providing them with alternative means of sustenance, the Minister has callously sent them to the streets, exacerbating the desperation and criminal activities in the city. "The Minister’s negligence and failure to address their needs and concerns have inadvertently created a vicious cycle of crime and victimization. “It is important to note that, when the poor no longer have what to eat, they will eat the rich. “It is time for the FCT Minister to fulfil his duty and for the security agencies to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the lives and dignity of the people. “The residents of Abuja deserve nothing less than a safe and secure environment in which to live, work, and thrive.” The Abuja-based lawyer ordered security personnel to improve their intelligence-gathering skills in order to guarantee the safety of the nation’s capital. https://newtelegraphng.com/abuja-kidnappings-adeyanju-blames-wike-for-constant-attack/

By Muawiya Shuaibu Femi Adesina, a former Special Adviser to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, has revealed how a presidential jet nearly turned over during a trip he embarked on with former President Muhammadu Buhari. The former presidential aide stated this in his new book titled ‘Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015-2023),’ launched in Abuja on Tuesday. According to him, the turbulence was so severe that when the plane finally landed in Malta, a deeply terrified Buhari queried the captain, “What kind of landing is this?” The captain later apologised to the President and his terrified passengers. Adesina wrote, “A presidential jet is not immune from bad weather and the accompanying turbulence (many hours of that we experienced). Neither is it spared from what aviators call wind shear (a sudden change in the direction of the wind). We had a frightful experience). "In November 2015, we travelled to Malta to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and it was an uneventful flight till the flight crew announced that we should get ready for landing. “A few seconds from touching the tarmac, the Boeing 737 business jet got buffeted from all sides and began to sway dangerously. On touching down, it pirouetted and gyrated like a drunken sailor; and was almost turning over. ‘Which kind of landing is this?’ The President said. I was seated with him in his special cabin.” He went on to list 94 countries the President visited officially during his eight-year term, with the highest 19 trips in 2016, 18 in 2022, 16 in 2015, 12 in 2018 and 10 in the following year. The former President embarked on his least number of two trips in 2020. He made five each in 2021 and 2023 before departing Abuja for his hometown of Daura, Katsina, on May 29, 2023. Adesina also disclosed that he experienced a health scare while speaking at the headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) following a lengthy overseas trip he undertook alongside his principal. Adesina said the incident occurred after a 17-hour flight back from Seoul, South Korean capital, where he accompanied Buhari to the World Health Organization’s first World Bio Summit in October 2022. He said, “On the way back from Seoul, flying time was 17 hours. The explanation a layman like me would understand was that we were flying against the wind. But it was a strenuous trip. "I had a presentation to make two days later at a seminar on Strategic Communication organised by the headquarters of the NSCDC for its spokesmen from across the country. I knew I was weary and needed rest, but I had given my word that I would be available. "The first thing that should have flashed an alarm bell in my mind was that when I got out of bed that morning, I staggered a bit. I did not give it much consideration and was at the event by the scheduled time. I had presented my paper for about 35 minutes and was concluding when I suddenly lost focus. I became disoriented and could no longer see the paper I was speaking from. I became transfixed on the podium. “I told my story to Mr. Everest Okpara, who owns the place and he ran comprehensive tests on me. When the results came, I saw areas I needed to watch for an aspiring senior citizen. I took the necessary care and had no health scare again till we landed on May 29, 2023. "The lesson? Do not think you are indestructible. So watch it because your health also matters. Do not drive yourself to breaking point.” https://dailytrust.com/buharis-jet-nearly-tumbled-during-landing-adesina/

By Ignatius Igwe US President Joe Biden said Friday it was still possible Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could agree to some form of Palestinian state, after the two leaders spoke for the first time in nearly a month amid tensions over the Gaza war. Their call came a day after Netanyahu said he opposes allowing Palestinian sovereignty in the wake of the conflict with Hamas, deepening Israeli divisions with key backer Washington over the conduct of Israel’s offensive and what comes next. But Biden said after the call that it was not impossible Netanyahu might come round to some form of so-called two-state solution, mooted for decades as a way to end tensions in the Middle East, despite the Israeli premier’s comments. "There are a number of types of two-state solutions. There’s a number of countries that are members of the UN that… don’t have their own militaries,” Biden told reporters after an event at the White House. And so, I think there’s ways in which this could work.” Asked what Netanyahu was open to, Biden replied: “I’ll let you know.” Biden and Netanyahu, who have a complicated relationship stretching back some 40 years, last spoke on December 23 and the silence between them since has led to repeated questions about a rift. Netanyahu has pledged to destroy Hamas and demilitarize Gaza following the October 7 attacks on Israel, and is increasingly resistant to US pressure for a plan that includes any form of Palestinian statehood that could threaten his country. The Israeli premier said on Thursday that his country “must have security control over all the territory west of the Jordan (River)” and that he had made this clear to Israel’s “American friends”. “This is a necessary condition, and it conflicts with the idea of (Palestinian) sovereignty,” Netanyahu said in public remarks. ‘Promise and possibility’ The White House said earlier that Biden had pushed the issue with Netanyahu when they spoke, but said the call had not been in direct response to the Israeli’s comments. "The president still believes in the promise and the possibility of a two-state solution” for both Israelis and Palestinians, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. The call also discussed US hostages still among those held captive by Hamas since the October 7 attack on Israel, he added. Biden and Netanyahu have often been at loggerheads in the past, with the Democratic US president last year pressing the right-wing Israeli premier over controversial judicial reforms. But Biden has stood firmly behind Israel since October 7, even travelling to the country after the attacks, where he publicly embraced Netanyahu and pledged full US support. Fresh tensions have emerged since then however as the toll of the Israeli offensive on Gaza has mounted, with Biden warning that Israel could lose support by “indiscriminate bombing” and pushing for a two-state solution. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week said Israel would not get “genuine security” without a “pathway to a Palestinian state.” The October 7 attacks resulted in the deaths of about 1,140 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. Militants also seized about 250 hostages, around 132 of whom Israel says remain in Gaza. Israel’s relentless air and ground offensive has killed at least 24,762 Palestinians, around 70 percent of them women, young children and adolescents, according to Gaza’s health ministry. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/01/20/biden-calls-netanyahu-says-palestinian-state-still-possible/

By Ignatius Igwe The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has said that all foreign trips by people in government should be stopped until the issue of insecurity is fixed. Recently, there has been an increase in kidnappings by gunmen in Abuja, a situation that has gripped residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with fear. The issue has forced President Bola Tinubu to hold an emergency with security chiefs, with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to give marching orders to police tactical commanders. Worried by the situation, the former Anambra governor took to his X page to decry the surge in kidnappings and banditry across the country as a huge cause for concern. "We deal with the ugly situation facing us at home,” his post read on Tuesday. “It is now time for we the leaders, to take all forms of serious measures to tackle the situation.” "As terror attacks, banditry, kidnappings and violence continue to rage through the country, it is more concerning now with the surge of violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja,” he said. “It is now time for we the leaders, to take all forms of serious measures to tackle the situation. It is unfortunate that President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2015, campaigned and won the elections on three items; Security, Economy and Corruption (SEC). "After his Eight years in office, the situation has worsened in all three areas. The present administration, on assuming office, promised to deal decisively with the same situation — Security, Economy and Corruption. “At the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Lagos in August 2022, the then Vice Presidential Candidate, Sen Kashim Shettima categorically stated that if APC is elected, he as Vice President would be in charge of security, while the President as an expert in the economy would handle the economy. Nigerians therefore now implore them to fulfil their campaign promises. Even if they do not achieve 100% results, we want to see 100% effort.” According to Obi, no foreign investor or partner would want to invest in Nigeria with the current security situation in the country. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/01/17/government-officials-shouldnt-embark-on-foreign-trips-until-security-is-fixed-obi/

The Nigerian government has warned that communities should not be compelled to purchase transformers, cables, poles and other materials on their own. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this known in Ibadan, Oyo State while meeting with the management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company during a facility tour. He noted that it was the responsibility of the distribution companies to provide transformers, cables and poles to communities so that power supply could improve. He asserted that the government was committed to providing every need of the people to improve their living standard, lamenting the incessant complaints of power consumers on the metering system and promised to address the situation by canceling the estimated Billings in the power sector. The minister explained that the ministry was open to collaborating with the private sector to better serve Nigerians in the area of power distribution. He said; “It is the responsibility of the distribution companies to provide transformers, cables and poles to communities so that power supply can improve. “A situation where communities buy transformers, cables and poles must stop. I know that you have these centers but how effective are they to ensure that customer complaints are attended to? “As a minister, I don’t want to hear news of communities being asked to purchase electric transformers, cables and poles. If the consumers are paying for the electricity, then it is the responsibility of the distribution companies to provide these items. “There must be improvement in power supply. That is what the government planned to do. People should not pay for darkness. When people have a 24-hour power supply, they can pay double for electricity because you have saved them the money to power generators. “We don’t want to hear the news of communities buying transformers, cables and poles for themselves again. The federal government frowns at it. You see what we have done in Kaduna. Service to our people is paramount. It is the responsibility that Mr. President has placed on us. You are not number one, two or three, you are struggling to be number four on the rating”. https://saharareporters.com/2024/01/15/no-nigerian-community-should-be-asked-pay-transformers-cables-poles-power-minister-warns

Some hoodlums have attacked the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, forcing their way into the Accident and Emergency Complex where they took away the corpse of a man. The Chief Medical Director of the EKSUTH, Prof. Kayode Olabanji, on Monday, condemned the activities of the hoodlums, saying the police were already on the matter. The hoodlums, who were angered by the man’s death, were said to have forcibly taken his corpse from the Accident and Emergency Ward on Monday morning. The CMD, in a statement by the management signed by the Head, Corporate Affairs Department, Rolake Adewumi, said, “Management will not tolerate any act of violence or mayhem being unleashed on members of staff of the hospital.” Olabanji said that EKSUTH management and the police authorities had met with the state Chairman of the Road Transport Association and “mandated him to produce the ring leader because the management heard that the person involved is a member of the association. “The management has stationed four armed policemen at the Accident and Emergency as well as two armed policemen at the main gate to strengthen the security of the hospital until further notice.” The CMD said that the Division Police Officer in charge of Oke-Ila Division, SP Sesan Falade, has also assured of frequent patrol of the hospital premises. Olabanji assured that the person who was involved in a recent similar occurrence at the Neo-Natal Ward would face the wrath of the law as the case was already in the court and the culprit was being prosecuted. By Fatteh Hamid Nigerians on social media have started a fundraising campaign for the ransom to seek the release of a lady identified only as Nabeeha and five of her sisters who were kidnapped by kidnappers in their house in Abuja on January 2, 2024. In the early hours of Wednesday, January 3, 2024, an X user, Adamu_Asiya_, who identified herself as a cousin to the kidnapped sisters announced the kidnap, noting that her uncle was killed in the process. She said, “Please pray for my sisters and uncle when you see this. Nabeeha, her sisters, and her dad were kidnapped in their house last night. We lost an uncle in the process. Your duas are needed.” Two days after her first tweet, she informed the public that the father of the girls was released by the kidnappers with a ransom of N60m placed on the lives of the Najeebah and her sisters with a deadline given. After her tweet, the hashtag, #Najeebaandhersisters was created to raise the N60m demanded by the kidnappers. However, in the early hours of Saturday, the cousin of the kidnapped sisters, Asiya, came on X to announce that one of the sisters, Nabeeha had been killed by the kidnappers after failing to meet the deadline for payment of the ransom given to the father, raising the ransom to N100m. She posted, “Innalillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajiun😭😭😭 Please put Nabeeha in your prayers. May Allah grant her Al-Jannatul Firdaus🤲🏾 They killed her…” Following the death of Nabeeha, there was an outrage on social media with Netizens demanding the police and Nigerian government act immediately to ensure the release of the sisters, Former media aide to Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.), Bashir Ahmad, on his official X handle posted, “I join fellow concerned Nigerians in urgently calling on the @PoliceNG through its PPRO @PrinceMoye1 to acknowledge and respond to the unfortunate incident involving the kidnapping of Najeebah and five of her sisters #NabeehaAndHerSisters more than a week ago. The information shared by a family member @Adamu_Asiya_ this morning indicated that the kidnappers have tragically killed Najeebah as a warning and demanded a N100 million ransom for the release of the remaining victims. We implore the Nigeria Police to prioritise this case and deploy all necessary resources to safely rescue the remaining victims. Thank you!” An X user, hayateey1, posted, “As an average Nigerian if you have refused to lend your voice for the rescue of Late Nabeeha’s 5 other sisters, know that you are no different from the government and security operatives you always call out and castigate. Insecurity affects all of us directly or indirectly! Let that sink in!” Another X user, KawuGarba posted, “If we keep quiet, this insecurity will consume all of us. "The innocent girl Nabeeha executed by armed bandits terrorists could be any of us. “FUGUS girls have spent almost 4 months in captivity, with no explanation and the media is silent about them.” Adedayo_agarau posted, “What else do Nigerians in Nigeria have to do to be safe? They pay taxes. They pray. They go to work. "Institutionalised criminal rings have been picking up innocent Nigerians and using them to get rich quickly or score political points. IT HAS TO STOP.” @dansatty also posted, “People get kidnapped day-in day-out in a country that has a government? Where are the security operatives saddled with the responsibility of protecting the citizens? What is the president @officialABAT doing about all these? It is a stranger’s turn today, it can be your turn or your loved ones’ tomorrow. #Najeebahandhersisters” @wizarab10 posted, “Hello @IretiKingibe. A father and his 6 daughters were kidnapped within the FCT. The dad was later released with a request to bring N60 million naira to secure his daughters’ safety. Unable to meet the deadline, one was killed and others will follow suit if he doesn’t meet their demands “How do we secure the release of this man’s daughters? Please, how do you intend to secure the lives of the citizenry within the Federal Capital? I need you to use your good office to help.” Responding to an X user who alleged that the police have been silent on the incident, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that not all information must be addressed on X. He said, “For your information, the police and other security agencies have been on the matter. Don’t allege security operatives wrongly, rather you ask questions, and you will be guided and informed. Ask questions, and drop allegations or speculations. Peace!!!.” In a subsequent post on X replying to Bashir Ahmad, Adejobi urged the family of the victims to work with the police on the matter. He posted, “Pls let the family members or you relate with us codedly. Let them reach out to me on my personal line, and drop a msg there. We have been working on it, but we need some info. We will try our best possible to emplace all necessary measures to rescue them unhurt. But we need to get some info pls. Thanks.” https://punchng.com/nabeeha-outrage-as-netizens-seek-donation-to-pay-ransom-of-sisters-abducted-in-abuja/?amp

By Bisola Fatoye The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, has made a disturbing revelation about the situation of education in the state, saying half of the children cannot read nor solve simple mathematics. He disclosed this during the quadrennial convention of the Old Boys Association of Union Secondary School in Awkunanaw, Enugu. Onyia delivered a keynote address on Thursday titled, “Smart Basic Education and the Future of Africa,” shedding light on the significant educational challenges faced by Enugu State. He said, “Our findings were shocking. After six years of primary school, 50 per cent of our children cannot read a single word in English, and those who can read struggle with comprehension. 50% of our children cannot solve simple subtraction challenges.” While he expressed concern about the broader perspective, Onyia emphasized that the issue extended beyond Enugu State, stating, “In Nigeria, three out of four children who completed basic education lack numeracy and literacy proficiency. The World Bank, UNICEF, and UNESCO have defined this as ‘the Nigerian Learning Crisis.'” Highlighting an additional concern, Onyia pointed out a “skills hap” among children who complete basic education, attributing it to inadequacies in existing teaching methods. He noted, “Our children suffer a ‘skills gap’ because existing modes of teaching do not equip children with scientific, technological, productive, and digital competences.” https://dailytrust.com/50-of-children-in-enugu-cant-read-solve-simple-math-ssg/

The Osun State Government says that the offices of the governor and secretary to the government were allocated N702 million for meals and entertainment in 2024. The Commissioner for Budget, Professor Ademola Adeleke, disclosed this during budget analysis in Osogbo. Adeleke debunked the insinuation that N11billion was allocated to meals and entertainment. He said about N8billion was allocated for the total recurrent expenditure in the Office of the Governor comprising the governor, deputy and Chief of Staff office, Bureau of General Services, the Bureau of Government House and Protocol, Bureau of Parastatal and Bureau of Social Services. The commissioner added that only N600million out of the N8billion was allocated for meals and entertainment. He said about N3billion was allocated to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government out of which, N102million was allocated to meals and entertainment. The claim that N11billion was budgeted for the offices of the governor and that of the SSG for meals and entertainment is a blatant lie. It is not correct in any way. “The office of the governor comprises about seven different agencies, like the office of the deputy governor, the office of the chief of staff, the bureau of general services, bureaus of government house and protocol, and the bureau of parastatals. "All these sub-agencies are referred to as the office of the governor. That is the entire conglomerate of the office of the governor that was allocated about N8billion for total recurrent expenditure, out of which only N600million is for meals and entertainment. “The Office of the SSG has a total recurrent of about N3billion. It is that amount that was added to N8billion to make the N11billion that they claimed. Only N102million was allocated for meals and entertainment for the office,” he said. Meanwhile, Adeleke disclosed that out of the 273.9 billion 2024 budget, education sector was allocated N38.9 billion, making 14.21 per cent, infrastructure sector got N57.2 billion, which is 20.89 per cent, and human capital development sector got 39.2 billion, which is 14.34 per cent of the total budget. In December 2023, SaharaReporters exclusively reported how N6billion was spent by Adeleke to run the “Office of the Governor” in three months. According to a copy of the state budget performance report between July-September 2023, the amount is different from the N209 million spent on personal expenditure in the governor’s office. https://saharareporters.com/2024/01/04/osun-governor-adeleke-alongside-state-secretary-spend-n702million-meals-entertainment

Kolade Adeyemi, Jos, and Adekunle Jimoh, Ilorin Grief has enveloped Ndun Tangur, a town in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, following the killing of a religious leader, Mallam Muhammad Idris, and a commercial motorcyclist, Muhammad Gambo by suspected bandits. Until his murder, Mallam Idris was the Chief Imam of Jumma’at Mosque in Ndun Tangur. His younger brother, Salisu Idris, was also injured in the fresh attack attack on the community. The senator representing Plateau Centre. Diet Plang, who lamented the violence, called for the setting up of military bases in the troubled areas. The Chairman of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN), Garba Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, explained that the two siblings had gone to Ndun to retrieve the belongings they left behind while fleeing the Christmas Eve attacks by suspected bandits. No fewer than 160 persons were killed in the mayhem, which Governor Caleb Muftwang described as a genocide. Abdullahi said the latest attack was immediately reported to security agencies in Bokkos council. He said: “The Chief Imam and his younger brother were attacked on Monday after arriving at the community to collect some of their belongings left from the previous attacks. But they were attacked. The hoodlums killed the Imam while his younger brother survived machete wounds. "The Okada rider, Muhammed Gambo, was killed while bringing a passenger to the area. We have reported the incidents to the Police and Operation Safe Haven in Bokkos.” But the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, said the incident had yet to be properly reported. He said: “Concerning the Okada rider, it was some boys that lured him to a secluded area and robbed him of his bike.” Senator Plang urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarians Affairs to provide building materials and palliatives to enable displaced residents return to their homes. He said that permanent solutions rather than short-term measures should be put in place to ensure that the perennial crises in the state are not repeated. Plang said: “ We must resolve that instead of having temporal palliative to issues of security, it is good for us to attain a permanent solution. Instead of when it happens, you will call the military to come and flush them out, we should go for permanent solutions by setting up military formations at flash-points. “ We have the point of entry of criminality from Barkin Ladi and Bokkos; we have another point of entry between Mangu Gindiri and Bauchi. If we have permanent security points in those places, criminals will be scared of getting close. The group said the current centralised policing structure does not have the capacity to prevent the magnitude of organised violence in rural communities. It added: “There’s no other option; we must decentralise policing or surrender to non-state actors until we are eventually overwhelmed.” https://thenationonlineng.net/chief-imam-okada-operator-killed-in-fresh-attack-on-plateau-community/
