Commander, the Biden family’s two-year-old German Shepherd, has bitten yet another Secret Service agent. The attack happened on Monday night and the officer was treated at the scene, the Secret Service said in a statement on Tuesday. This is the 11th time the dog has bitten a guard at the White House or the Biden family home, BBC reports. The White House Press Secretary has previously blamed the attacks on the stress of living at the White House. As you all know, the White House complex can be unique and very stressful. That is something I’m sure you can all understand,” she said in July. "It is unique and it is stressful for all of us. So you can imagine what it’s like for a family pet or family pets, more broadly.” Commander is the younger of the Biden family’s two German Shepherds. The other biting incidents occurred at the president and first lady’s home in Delaware. Yesterday around 8 pm, a Secret Service Uniformed Division police officer came in contact with a First Family pet and was bitten,” said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He later told CNN that the injured officer spoke to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Tuesday and is doing OK. In July, White House officials said they were attempting new leashing and training techniques for Commander, following a rash of attacks on personnel. https://punchng.com/biden-dog-bites-another-secret-service-agent/

Lucky Obukohwo Reporting Edo State Commissioner of Police, Dankwara Mohammed, has given a marching order to the officers and men of the command to mop up and arrest anyone in possession of illegal fire arms of any kinds in the state. He also said that those who willingly come forth to submit theirs would be spared. The Commissioner of Police, Dankwara, said this through the Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor. According to the CP” the command has commenced mopping up exercise to rid the state of all illegal and prohibited firearms in circulation; noting that those who take advantage of this opportunity will not face any arrest or sanction. “I warned that the possessor of illegal arms who refuse to render his/ her arms will not be spared and will be made to face the full wrath of the law when caught, hence, I have given a marching order to officers and men of the Command to arrest anyone found in possession of firearms of any type – be it a pistol, rifle, air weapon, or imitation (i.e. locally made guns, dummy guns, etc), for prosecution with the offence of unlawful possession of firearm. " I call on residents to report all suspicious firearms related activities and its possessor to the Police”, Mohammed said the order to mop up the fire arms is coming from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun, as part of efforts to savage the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country. He called on members of the public who have illegal and prohibited firearms in their possession to render such to nearby Police Station, Area Command or the State Headquarters. He assures all individuals involved in the wrongful possession of arms and light weapons that a willful submission of such illegally possessed weapons to police will attract “NO SANCTION” to the remittees of these arms for the obedience to the rules of law. He said this exercise is aimed at reducing the numbers of illegal guns in circulation across the state, and also to stop firearms from getting into the wrong hands and being used by criminal elements to commit crimes in our society or anywhere else in the country, hence keeping the State safe for all. The CP urges the good people of Edo State to rise up and report anyone with illegal arms to him, his Deputies or through the Police command’s dedicated telephone numbers for prompt response and action while assuring that the identities of informants will be treated with utmost confidentiality. https://truthlivenews.com/surrender-your-guns-or-we-rope-you-up-edo-police-threaten-possessors-of-illegal-fire-arms/?amp=1

Outlawed Igbo separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused the Nigerian military over claims that the ending of the Monday sit-at-home in the South-East region was as a result of its intervention. Describing the claim by the military as laughable, the pro-Biafra group said security agencies had nothing to do with ending the sit-at-home as the directives came from its leader, Nnamdi Kanu who ordered that the orders must stop with immediate effect. The Biafran agitators also accused the military of lying to Nigerians as operatives were “hiding” while unknown gunmen went about enforcing the sit-at-home on the orders of Simon Ekpa. In a statement on Friday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, entitled, ‘The public should ignore Nigeria Military claim of stopping Monday sit-at-home order in South East,’ IPOB said that while the sit-at-home lasted, the “military and the police were nowhere to be found to provide security even when residents continuously cried out for help” until Igbo leaders cried out and got the attention of Kanu who ordered Ekpa and his group to stop the orders. "The attention of the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has been drawn to the laughable, disgraceful and a statement that does not hold waters, credited to the Nigeria government and its compromised security agencies, particularly the military that they stopped Monday sit-at-home order in the Southeast region,” the statement reads. "We therefore, request the general public to ignore the military and other security agencies. The claims of the Nigeria military of being responsible for stopping the infamous sit-at-homes is laughable and criminal. “As much as the sit-at-home was an IPOB brainchild and a powerful strategy of IPOB before the Nigeria government agents hijacked and abused it, its ending was as a result of proactive actions and strategy by IPOB and our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. “IPoB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu printed fliers, posters, and banners informing our people that sit-at-home was over and had been over. "It is on record that IPOB discontinued Monday’s weekly sit-at-home after its first successful observation and our peoples’ voluntary compliance before Nigerian government agents claiming to be working for IPOB hijacked it and used it to commit crimes. “Where were the Nigerian military and police when the people of South East were molested, intimidated and killed by hoodlums enforcing IPoB cancelled Monday weekly sit-at-home? "They were all hiding in their barracks on Mondays while the sit-at-home lasted until our leader’s instruction that it must be stopped forthwith in Igbo land. “Where was Nigerian government that felt it’s continuation was a weapon to deal with the South East and should not be stopped? Both the immediate past and present Nigerian governments wanted it to continue because they believed it was against the Igbo economy and therefore should not stop and they actually did nothing to stop it. “Why didn’t the government, the military and the police provide protection to people who dared to come out on the road and streets during the exercise? "The Nigeria military must stop telling lies that they stopped sit-at-home, they never did. They were rather hiding in their barracks while it lasted. IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu stopped sit-at-home. Nigeria military had no capacity to stop the Monday sit-at-home in Biafraland,” the statement said. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/ipob-accuses-nigerian-military-of-lying-about-ending-sit-at-home-in-south-east/

Ifedayo Ogunyemi Apostle ‘Korede Awolesi is the founder and General Overseer of the Church of the Lord Revival Ministries (CLOREM), Sagamu, Ogun State. In this interview with IFEDAYO OGUNYEMI, he spoke about contemporary issues facing Christendom in Nigeria and the ministry’s impacts in the last 20 years. Excerpts: There have been reports of persecution of Christians such that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which you are a member of, has been at the forefront of the campaign against it. What would you say about the issue? Every knowledgeable Christian should first and foremost thank God for the fulfillment of prophecy. Jesus predicted it a long time ago. It is a sign of the end time. If persecution did not arise, then there would not be persecution of the prophecy. At the same time, we need to be prayerful because nobody knows the plan of God for the human tools used for such persecution. Apostle Paul was once a persecutor of the church before he was saved and became a tool for the growth, development, and propagation of the church. One should always pray that all these things turn out to be in favour of the church. No, it is not. There is no issue with arresting and bringing persecutors to face the wrath of the law because the government cannot open its eyes and feel nonchalant and unconcerned about it. It undermines the authority of the government. As many of them can be arrested, they should be arrested. Such arrests may be what helps to eliminate or reduce the volume of persecution. I’m not against it. Sometimes, the government is accused of being the one behind the persecution. The government should help to reduce the level of persecution in the country. In the build-up to the 2023 general election, we saw an unprecedented level of politicking inside the church. Would you subscribe to the notion that politics should be brought to the altar? There is no way we can separate the church from politics. The issue today is that we are making it more open. God told Samuel he would send someone to him to be anointed as the next king of Israel. When the person came, Samuel anointed him, it was after the anointing that the election of Saul took place. Samuel had already known who the king was before the election. God will not do anything without revealing such things to his people. In October and November 2022, God revealed certain things to me regarding the 2023 elections. I never told anybody except my wife. What I am saying is that the church can be involved but there should be a limit because a lot of our members belong to various political parties. Even if you have someone you have in mind to vote for, let it be yours alone, you can only help them to pray that God’s will be done. God told Samuel to go to the house of Jesse because he had seen somebody who would be the ruler of the people and because he had rejected Saul. He told Ahijah to anoint Jeroboam when he took ten tribes away from Israel. Another thing that characterised the general elections was the various conflicting prophecies from clerics. What do you attribute to this issue of conflicting prophecies? We see visions in parts, we hear and know in parts. If I wanted to make a name for myself ahead of the country’s election, I would have publicised my part and would have been among them. But there was no need for me to do that because I didn’t receive any instruction to publicise the revelation. I could not interpret what I saw immediately and couldn’t have made it public. That is the problem with conflicting prophecies. It is one thing to see, it is another thing to be able to interpret it rightly because interpretation belongs to the Lord because he reveals in parts to his people. Jeremiah was asked what he saw, and he said he saw a boiling pot facing the North. If God did not interpret the vision for Jeremiah, he may have mistaken it for another thing entirely. He could have gone to the market to buy a pot and put it on fire, but God told him he was rather bringing calamity from the North. Joseph told Pharaoh that the interpretation of dreams belongs to God just like Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar, but a lot of our people do not have the patience to wait for that interpretation. Nobody is forcing anyone to say anything. The conflict is a result of the differences in what everybody is seeing. There was an outcry that a party fielded Muslim-Muslim candidates. Now that the said party is in power, how would you advise it to take care of the affairs and welfare of Christians in the country? On the issue of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, I have said several times that people should not misunderstand the Christian position. What was issued was the official stand of CAN and it does not change the fact that all Christians belong to all existing parties. The official stand of CAN did not mean Christians would not vote for their choice. Would I tell my church member who was once an APC chairman not to vote for his party? It is only an official stand. If God had allowed them to get into the leadership position, our job now is to assist them in prayers. The fear behind that position was that when a Christian was at the helm of affairs, there was persecution, what then would happen if there was no Christian at the top? Nobody knows how God does his things. The issue of persecution of Christians may even be better arrested at a time when there’s no Christian at the top. Irrespective of who is in government, it is the job of the church to pray for them, for the restoration of peace in Nigeria and the manifestation of God’s will. https://tribuneonlineng.com/conflicting-prophecies-we-cannot-separate-church-from-politics-but-there-should-be-limit-awolesi/

By Hamisu Kabir The subsidised metro buses dispatched to Maiduguri roads by the Borno State governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, have crashed transportation fare in the city. The governor had launched 70 metro buses to crisscross the city everyday and ease transportation costs and difficulties in the state. "I want you to ensure that these buses start operations tomorrow morning, unfailingly. You should however be mindful of our situation and ensure that you bring down the cost of transportation. "Let us consider it as a social service and not as a revenue generation drive,” Zulum told the Borno Express management. Our correspondent who went round the state capital, reports that civil servants, students and other commuters said the gesture was a relief to masses struggling to survive the current economic situation. Aishatu Haruna Mohammed, a student of the College of Business and Management Studies Konduga, said the metro buses have reduced her transportation cost. "Before, we were paying N150 to Keke Napep operators per drop, but with the metro buses that government introduced, we pay only N50 to cover the same distance and for my daily four drops, I now spent N200 against N600,” she added. Yunusa Salisu, a civil servant, said he was excited by the decision of the governor to buy the buses. It has assisted not only students but we the parents in reducing cost because before now, Keke Napep operators charged N150 per drop within the city and sometimes you have to take four drops to and from your destination, just like your children would also take same to school. “At the end of the month, you will realise that half of your salary is spent on transportation.” He called on the government to ensure proper maintenance and sustainability of the metro bus service. Bunu Hassan, another civil servant, said the initiative would change the lives of many people in the state. "If you are following things in Maiduguri, you will know that many students and civil servants have resorted to the use of bicycles to work and school. “With these buses, we would at least save money from our salaries to do other things because some of us are usually left with nothing at the end of the day,” he said. Philabus Zakaria, a Keke Napep operator, said the introduction of the metro buses has drastically reduced the number of passengers that patronise them. "You will wait for passengers at the bus stop but the metro buses will come and pack them. Now, they have reduced us to conveying passengers that go into the narrow streets of the town. "It’s not our fault that the transport fare increased, it’s the subsidy removal. We buy fuel at N637 per litre, but the presence of the buses has forced us to reduce the fare we charge from N150 to N100 and we are operating at a loss,” he said. The State Chairman, Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) Yusuf Inuwa, appreciated the governor for acting on their demands, saying the metro buses would go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the people. The General Manager of Borno Express Grema Zannah Kyari, said Governor Zulum unveiled the fleet of 70 buses to alleviate the burden of commuting for both government employees and the general public. He said each of the vehicles is equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning facilities and comfortable seating arrangements to ensure a pleasant commuting experience. “We have 15 routes that these buses ply and the passengers pay only N50, no matter the distance. For instance, we have Post office to Mai Malari Barracks; Post office to Mala Kachalla Bypass; Post office to Polo site; Post office to State University and so on,” he said. He said that fuel subsidy has put many people into economic hardship and the only support to them is to ease the transport cost. He allayed the fear of some commuters that the programme may face hitches if not carefully handled. “Borno Express has maintained decades of effective service to customers. “For years, we have been operating a free school bus program and it has not stopped even for a day. We instilled discipline in our staff, especially the drivers. So, maintaining the buses would not be a problem for us,” he said. https://dailytrust.com/n50-metro-bus-services-crash-transport-fares-in-borno/

By Ignatius Igwe North Korean leader Kim Jong Un left Russia on Sunday, ending a visit affirming close ties with Vladimir Putin and fuelling Western fears that Pyongyang might provide Moscow with arms for its assault on Ukraine. Kim’s extended tour of Russia’s far eastern region, which began Tuesday, has focused extensively on military matters, with his own entourage dominated by officers, a symbolic exchange of rifles with Putin and a tour of a fighter jet factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Before departing, TASS said Kim had been given five explosive drones, a reconnaissance drone and a bulletproof vest as gifts from a regional governor. The Russian agency said the “leader of the DPRK received five kamikaze drones and a ‘Geran-25’ reconnaissance drone with vertical takeoff”, using the official name of North Korea. TASS said the governor of the Primorye region, which borders China and North Korea, also “offered Kim Jong Un a set of bulletproof protection” and “special clothing not detectable by thermal cameras”. Later on Sunday the Ria Novosti agency published a video of Kim’s departure, and said a “departure ceremony” was held at the Artyom-Primorsky-1 station. Footage shows Kim waving goodbye from his train to a Russian delegation led by Natural Resources Minister Alexander Kozlov, before the Russian march “Farewell of Slavianka” is played as the train departs. The official TASS news agency said that Kim’s train was headed around 250 kilometres (155 miles) towards the border. Historic allies, Russia and North Korea are both under rafts of global sanctions — Moscow for its Ukraine assault, Pyongyang for its nuclear tests. The first official visit abroad for the North Korean leader since the coronavirus pandemic has fanned Western fears that Moscow and Pyongyang will defy sanctions and strike an arms deal. After meeting Kim on Wednesday at the Vostochny cosmodrome, roughly 8,000 kilometres (5,000 miles) from Moscow, Putin talked up the prospect of greater cooperation with North Korea and the “possibilities” for military ties. Moscow is believed to be interested in buying North Korean ammunition to continue fighting in Ukraine, while Pyongyang wants Russia’s help to develop its internationally condemned missile programme. The Kremlin has said no agreement has or will be signed. On Saturday Kim met the Russian defence minister in Vladivostok, where he inspected state-of-the-art weapons including a hypersonic missile system. The pair were seen smiling as they inspected some of Russia’s nuclear bombers at an airfield before boarding a warship, a video released by the Russian defence ministry showed. North Korean news agency KCNA has described the atmosphere during Kim’s visit as “fervent and warm” and said a “new era of friendship, solidarity and cooperation” was opening between North Korea and Russia. While meeting Kim, Putin accepted an invitation to visit North Korea and offered to send a North Korean to space, which would be a first. https://www.channelstv.com/2023/09/17/north-koreas-kim-leaves-russia-receives-drones-as-gift/

PETROL subsidy removal has affected Nigerians and their livelihood in general ranging from transportation, commodities and their general welfare. In response, the Federal Government introduced certain measures to cushion the pains and hardship caused by the subsidy removal, consisting mainly of palliativesand other forms of support to different levels of the government. However, I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of utmost importance, one that concerns the welfare of tertiary students across our nation. We students continue to grapple with the effects of the subsidy removal that has caused increase in transport fare from where we live in various states to the schools across country and the hike in commodities. This has made some of our colleagues to quit theirstudies as they can’t afford the costs anymore. It has become increasingly evident that students, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are facing significant hardship. Students are the future of our country, and their education is a critical building block for the progress and prosperity of our nation. We humbly request government support by providing palliatives for students to alleviate their suffering during these challenging times. Why should we be isolated from the distribution of the relief materials?Let the palliatives and food items get to our campuses. We kindly urge you to consider this request and take necessary actions to provide palliatives for students across our nation. Muhammad Auwal Muhammad, University of Maiduguri

By Adebayo Folorunsho-Francis A member of the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee, Tolu Bankole, has expressed strong conviction that the outcome of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal slated for Wednesday will be in favour of President Bola Tinubu. Bankole’s vote of confidence was a reaction to viral reports in the media that pressure was being mounted on the judges to disqualify the president. The five judges that will deliver the verdict are the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Haruna Tsammani; Justice Stephen Adah of the Court of Appeal (Asaba Division); Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf, Court of Appeal (Asaba); Justices Moses Ugo (Kano) and Abba Mohammed of the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal. Recall that the tribunal had earlier announced that it will on Wednesday, deliver judgment on the petitions challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission. In a similar vein, the military and the police have warned that they will not condone any unlawful act by troublemakers on the day of the ruling. According to Bankole in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, there is no cause for alarm. The APC chieftain boasted that media frenzy and alleged threats being issued to judges will not stop the judiciary from reaffirming Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. He said, “In view of the current media and social media pressure and in some cases propaganda by some alarmists in the country as it relates to the would-be outcome of the presidential election tribunal, I am more than confident that the judgment will be resoundingly in favour of our dear president, H.E Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is borne out of facts from the case, which was canvased by both the plaintiffs and defendants before the Presidential Elections Petitions Tribunal in Abuja. "In my opinion, it is evidently clear that the grounds of the petitions against our dear president lack merit, is frivolous, a waste of time and pure academic exercise. Nigeria’s judiciary has always shown to be above board, incorruptible and not one to be bullied by sore losers and their keypad warriors, and tomorrow’s verdict will not be an exemption. “The 100 days of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in office showed clearly that the president has the capacity and character to deliver on his renewed hope mandate to alleviate endemic poverty, create jobs and make Nigeria a prosperous nation. The beauty of participatory democracy is that there is always another opportunity to contest. The next national election is in 2027. Instead of cyberstalking and threatening to make the country ungovernable, the losers should go and try again. I appeal to all Nigerians to be calm and patient. Tomorrow is great.” https://punchng.com/tribunal-verdict-will-favour-tinubu-apc-chieftain-boasts/

Ta’Kiya Young and her unborn child were killed by police in Ohio in incident family says could have been avoided. Police in the US state of Ohio have released body camera footage of a fatal shooting of pregnant Black woman Ta’Kiya Young, which sparked public anger and renewed calls for an end to deadly police violence in the United States. The footage released on Friday showed the 21-year-old’s killing in a grocery store parking lot in Blendon Township, a suburb of the Ohio state capital, Columbus, on August 24. Authorities said Young’s unborn child did not survive the shooting. Blending Township Police Chief John Belford has characterised the incident as a “tragedy” that occurred when police tried to stop Young after she was accused of shoplifting. But Young’s family has called the killing “avoidable”, a “gross misuse of power and authority” and a “hateful act”, according to local media reports. "This incident goes beyond the obvious policy violations that occurred,” the family said in a statement, as reported by the Columbus Dispatch newspaper. “After seeing the video footage of her death, this is clearly a criminal act.” The US has seen mass protests in recent years against deadly police violence, including the 2020 killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Advocates have continued to demand accountability and an end to anti-Black racism. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2023/9/1/us-police-release-footage-showing-fatal-shooting-of-pregnant-black-woman

Most societies try to protect girls from sexual predators by punishing said predators. But in this report, GRACE OBIKE reveals how pre-teens are tortured in Abuja by being made to undergo breast ironing all in the name of preventing them from being raped. It is widely believed that one in every four Nigerian girls has been a victim of sexual violence. Of the number who reported their ugly experiences, fewer than five out of 100 received any form of support data from the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) states. For centuries, the fear of sexual violence has pushed women to adopt different methods of protecting their daughters. In Pygba Sama, a community in Apo about 14.2km away from the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the fear of rape and sexual molestation by randy men has shaped the culture of protection for underage girls. In order to make teenage girls look less ‘womanly’ and to prevent unwanted male attention, pregnancy and rape, women in Pygba Sama, Kpaduma II and a few other communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) practice breast ironing, also known as breast flattening. Thirty-year-old Kandie Iliya was in panic mode when she realised that her 10-year-old daughter was beginning to develop breasts. She broke up parts of a calabash into what looks like huge bra cup sizes, called Amapala in Gbagyi language. She then placed the parts of the calabash close to the fire, and when it was hot, she held her screaming daughter down and used it to meticulously massage the daughter’s breasts tissues until she was satisfied it had dissolved. "I knew she didn’t want it, because she was crying and squirming. But what could I have done? She was too young to start having breasts. I love my daughter and did not want men to start noticing her.” She said. Kandie is not the only one who believes in such a practice. Thirty-eight-year-old Grace Ekene, who is originally Gbagyi but married to an Igbo man, also decided to iron her daughter’s breasts after realising that the 11 years old was not only towering over her mates in the community but had began to grow breasts. Although Grace escaped the experience when she was younger because she always ran away each time her mother tried to practice it on her, she still decided to put her daughter through the nightmare for fear of someone noticing the girl or molesting her. She said: “I didn’t like it when I was young. I was scared of it. Whenever my mother called me for it, I would run away from home till she forgot. "But after seeing my daughter and the way she was developing beyond her age, I decided to protect her, and I almost succeeded in ironing her breasts. "Luckily, my friends, who had attended a community meeting on the day that I had set aside to do it, came to visit. "When I told them what I planned on doing to my daughter that evening, they told me that they were told at the meeting that young girls whose breasts are ironed may develop cancer later in life.” https://thenationonlineng.net/abuja-communities-where-girls-breasts-are-suppressed-to-save-them-from-rape/

We got only half of money promised – Kano, Nasarawa, Benue •Ondo, Osun say nothing received yet •Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun mum •Full money in – Borno, Niger, Adamawa By Dayo Johnson, Shina Abubakar, James Ogunnaike, Wole Mosadomi, Musa Ubandawaki, Umar Yusuf, Peter Duru, Bashir Bello, David Odama, Haruna Aliyu and Ndahi Marama State governments across Nigeria, at the weekend, sang different tunes on the N5 billion promised each of them by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of the removal of petrol subsidy on the masses. While some said they had received only N2 billion, others said they had not been paid anything. Some claimed to have been paid in full. Last week, while representing President Bola Tinubu at Chief Edwin Clark’s book launch, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, had re-echoed the promise: “Solutions to problems can never be as instant as coffee. But, we must certainly be there. "I know the removal of fuel subsidy has created some things. “And, that is why palliatives are being put in place; 100 trucks of fertilizers have been sent to the states; 100 trucks of grains have been sent; and more are coming, and more buses are coming.” In addition, the National Economic Council, NEC, approved N5 billion and five trucks of rice to each state. Kano, Nasarawa, Benue Kano, Nasarawa and Benue state governments said they had received N2 billion each while Nasarawa said it received in addition one billion Naira worth of maize. Kano State Commissioner for Information, Halilu Baba Dantiye, confirmed the receipt of the money to Sunday Vanguard in a telephone interview. Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, on his part, said the state was still expecting the balance of N3billion from the Federal Government. Adamawa In Adamawa, the state government confirmed the receipt of N5 billion palliatives and has accordingly set up a high powered committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon Awwal Tukur, to ensure even distribution to the people. The committee has since been inaugurated by Acting Governor Kaleptawa Farauta. Also, Sokoto State government confirmed receiving part of the N5 billion promised by the Federal Government. The State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Sambo Bello Danchadi, while speaking to our correspondent, however, declined to mention the amount so far received. Niger Reports from Niger State said N4million had been received by the authorities while the balance of N1m was expected to be expended on assorted grains to be supplied by the Federal Government to the state later. Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago declared that part of the money already received will be used to improve the transportation system in the state as a way of bringing succour to people of the state. He said his administration had concluded plans to flood the state with gas fueled vehicles for inter and intra city services across the state as one of the numerous steps taken to cushion the removal of petrol subsidy. Bago spoke during the swearing-in of 60 Commissioners and Special Advisers in Minna, the state capital. Ondo Ondo State government said it was yet to receive the N5 billion support money.. A source in the state Finance Ministry said, “The state government has not received the N5 billion. But anything can happen between today, Friday, and Monday. A source in the state Finance Ministry said, “The state government has not received the N5 billion. But anything can happen between today, Friday, and Monday. “But what I can confidently tell you is that we’ve not received the money in our state. We’ve only received 3, 000 out of the 81, 000 bags of rice promised states by the Federal Government. Efforts to speak with the state Finance Commissioner, Wale Akinterinwa, proved abortive. In Ogun, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Kunle Adeniran, promised to get back on the promised N5 billion palliative but didn’t until press time. Osun Osun State government said that it was yet to receive the N5 billion. The state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said they had received the 3,000 bags of 50kg rice as the first batch but was yet to receive the promised N5billion. “I am not speaking for any state, but here in Osun, we are still expecting it and when we get it the whole world will know”, Alimi said. " Yes, we have received 3,000 bags of 50kg rice from the Federal Government, but we have not received any amount from the N5bn it pledged to the state. “We are still waiting for another consignment of 14, 000 bags as well as 3,200MT of maize. Governor Ademola Adeleke is running an open administration, when we get it, we will definitely make it public”. Government officials contacted in Oyo and Ekiti states declined comments on the N5 billion palliative. Kebbi Kebbi State government said it was yet to receive the cash. The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Idris, Ahmed Idris, told Sunday Vanguard that they were yet to receive the N5 billion. By Emmanuel Egobiambu Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has suspended all foreign travel by officials, including himself, to reduce public spending, a government spokesman announced Saturday. Barrow signed an executive order “suspending all overseas travels by the president, the vice-president, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, civil servants and employees across all government institutions and agencies,” for the rest of the fiscal year, presidential spokesman Ebrima Sankareh said in a statement. Meetings where Gambian participation is compulsory and foreign trips entirely financed by external sources will be exempt. The Gambia, continental Africa’s smallest country with just over two million inhabitants, ranks 174th out of 191 on the UN’s Human Development Index, which combines health, education and standard of living criteria. More than a fifth of the population lives on less than two dollars a day, according to the World Bank. Annual inflation reached 11.6 percent last year. With tax revenues falling, and high state subsidies on fuel, fertiliser and grain due to the effects of the Ukraine war, the budget deficit widened last year. The budget deficit and debt levels have also risen, as tax revenues have fallen and due to higher subsidies for fuel, fertilisers and cereals as a result of the war in Ukraine.

By Gift Habib Burkina Faso and Mali have deployed war planes to Niger Republic following the Economic Community of West Africa possible armed intervention to restore democracy in Niger Republic. Niger television station reported joint efforts by Mali and Burkina Faso in support of Niger and the deployment of warplanes within Niger’s borders on Friday. “Mali and Burkina Faso turned their commitments into concrete action by deploying warplanes to respond to any attack on Niger,” it said, noting the planes were Super Tucano fighter jets. The coup leaders imprisoned President Mohamed Bazoum on June 26 and dissolved the elected government of Niger, a major uranium producer and Western ally in the fight against an Islamist insurgency. On July 30, ECOWAS, led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, decided on sanctions against the military personnel in Niger and gave a week ultimatum to the military junta to restore ousted Bazoum to office. After the one-week ultimatum expired, West African leaders met on August 10 and approved a “standby force” to reinstate elected Bazoum. The coupists had called the bluff of ECOWAS and vowed to resist foreign intervention. Subsequently, ECOWAS Defence Chiefs were ordered to activate the region’s force for action to restore civil rule in Niger, noting that it will invade the country on the “D-Day.” But the military governments in Mali and Burkina Faso called ECOWAS’s bluff, saying an armed intervention in Niger would be met with force. The television station said the military leaders from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger convened Friday in the Nigerien capital Niamey to decide on “concrete measures” in case ECOWAS chooses to “escalate a war.” https://punchng.com/niger-coup-burkina-faso-mali-deploy-war-planes-after-ecowas-threat/

By Ademola Adegbite The former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday said elections in Nigeria were corrupt, urging Christians to fully participate in politics to make it clean. He made this known at the 57th annual convention and 67th anniversary of The Gospel Faith Mission International held at the Gospel City, Ogunmakin on Lagos/Ibadan expressway in Ogun State. Obasanjo, while speaking on the theme, ‘The Roles of the Church in Nation Building at a Time Like This’, said when there is insecurity, hopelessness, poverty, depression, a time that is not conducive to living, the church must rise up to the occasion as the salt of the world. "The foundation of election in Nigeria is corruption and you cannot make corruption the foundation of anything for it to be good” While sighting the 1999 elections, he said the two first sad and bad experiences he had were during the local government election, were PDP was totally rejected. "The two first sad and bad experiences that I had, we had local govt election in 1999.” A few days to the election, they said to me where is the money for the police, money for INEC, I said no money , money for DSS”. Obasanjo noted he did not make money available because he felt all government agencies should have been paid towards discharging their duties. Earlier, the General-Overseer of GOFAMINT, E. O. Abina, recalled that during a visit to Aso Rock Chapel when Obasanjo was the President, he met with him teaching Sunday School, adding that when they both spoke on his arrival at the convention ground, the former President told him to his astonishment that he was still teaching Sunday School. https://punchng.com/join-politics-to-stop-fraudulent-elections-obasanjo-tells-christians/

By Deji Lambo Two of the four rescued Nigerian stowaways have narrated how they survived 14 days on a ship’s rudder by drinking their urine before being rescued off the coast of Brazil. According to Daily Mail, the two men told their remarkable, death-defying journey across 3,500 miles (5,600 kilometres) of open ocean from Lagos, Nigeria to Vitória, Brazil. The four stowaways were said to be fleeing the economic hardship and political instability in Nigeria and reportedly climbed into a space above the rudder of a cargo ship and hoped to reach Europe. However, after two weeks of travelling, they ran out of food and water and in a bid to survive, resorted to drinking their urine and seawater as the ship pushed on towards South America. Chronicling the challenges experienced during the journey, one of the stowaways, Thankgod Yeye, 38, in a report by the Daily Mail, said it was a terrible incident. “It was a terrible experience for me. On board, it is not easy. I was shaking, so scared. But I’m here,” he said. On his part, another victim, Roman Friday, 35, said they rigged up a net around the rudder to stop themselves falling in, adding that he saw “big fish like whales and sharks” in the ocean. The Daily Mail reports that the victims were interviewed at a Sao Paolo church shelter after the ordeal, adding that they were finally rescued by Brazilian federal police in the southeastern port of Vitória two weeks after setting off on June 27. It was learnt that due to the cramped conditions and the noise of the engine, sleeping was rare and risky. Friday said, “I was very happy when we got rescued. I pray the government of Brazil will pity me.” It was learnt that two of the rescued victims have since been returned to Nigeria upon their request, but Yeye and Friday were said to have applied for asylum in Brazil, citing economic hardship, political instability and crime as reasons for abandoning Nigeria. According to the Daily Mail, Yeye, a Pentecostal minister from Lagos state, said his peanut and palm oil farm was destroyed by floods this year, leaving him and his family homeless. As for Friday, he said his journey to Brazil began on June 27, when a fisherman friend rowed him up to the stern of the Liberian-flagged Ken Wave, docked in Lagos, and left him by the rudder where he found three men already waiting for the same ship to depart. A priest at the Sao Paulo shelter, Father Paolo Parise, said he had come across other cases of stowaways, but never one so dangerous. "People do unimaginable and deeply dangerous things,” he said. https://punchng.com/how-europe-bound-nigerian-stowaways-survived-drinking-urine-on-ships-rudder/
