CrimeMob Killing Is Archaic’ —MURIC Condemns Gruesome Murder Of Sokoto Female Student by Kuginzi(op): 10:25pm On May 13, 2022
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the killing of Deborah Samuel, a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto state.

Deborah was attacked by a mob and set ablaze over comments purportedly considered to be an insult to Prophet Mohammed.

A video of the student being stoned and beaten with sticks was shared on social media on Thursday.

The incident has sparked outrage with many Nigerians calling for justice.

Reacting to the development, MURIC, in a statement signed by Ishaq Akintola, its director, said the Quran and Prophet Mohammed condemned violence, adding that the “aggrieved students” should have reported to the police and Hisbah.

“MURIC strongly condemns this killing and all others that have been happening in Nigeria in recent times. Those aggrieved by the student’s post should have reported her to the security agencies or to the Shariah police, the hisbah. Mob killing is archaic and bohemian. It belongs to the Stone Age. Nobody has the right to take the law into his hands,” the statement reads.

“The Glorious Qur’an compares the killing of a single person to the killing of the whole of humanity just as it compares the saving of a life to the rescue of all homo sapiens (Qur’an 5:32) In like manner, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself condemned all acts of violence and advocated peaceful conduct at all times.

But this incident should not be condemned in isolation. The recent trend whereby Nigerians now freely shed their brothers blood should be condemned by all patriots. In this regard, we also strongly denounce the killing of several northern Muslims in the south-east in the past few months.

“We frown at the recent burning last week of a truck fully loaded with cows in the south-east as well as the killing of many Muslims of south-east origin by their Igbo brothers in the same south-east. We note with keen interest that Muslims in the morth did not retaliate when these killings were taking place.

“MURIC calls on the Sokoto police command to do everything within its power to get to the bottom of yesterday’s killing of the female student over alleged blasphemy.

“We appeal to members of the public to remain calm and law abiding. Nigerians should allow the police to carry out its investigations on the case. The Sokoto police command has started well as it already has two suspects in detention for the killing.”

PoliticsRe: 2023 Presidency: Ohanaeze Threatens Boycott Of Polls Over Zoning by Kuginzi(op): 6:24pm On May 08, 2022

Oga rest. Is Nigeria not a zoo...?! Oga rest before you get high BP! Rest!!
But why do you suddenly change your agitation for the unattainable dream nation of your imagination (Biafra) to 'Zone the presidency to Southeast (Igbo Presidency)??
Politics2023 Presidency: Ohanaeze Threatens Boycott Of Polls Over Zoning by Kuginzi(op): 4:41pm On May 08, 2022
Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Sunday, threatened a boycott of the 2023 presidential election should the two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, refuse to zone their tickets to the Southern region.

This came in reaction to the latest stand of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and the Northern Elders’ Forum, NEF, who both believe the presidential contest should be thrown open.

But Ohanaeze, through its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro said in a statement made available to DAILY POST, that the abolition of the gentleman agreement on power rotation would come with dire consequences.

He said it was obvious that “the Northern Elders’ Forum has opted for absurdity in issues that will strengthen internal democracy in all political parties and in the country.”

He, however, warned that “any attempt by northern socio-cultural groups to arm-twist the two major political parties, through their sons who are National Chairmen of both the APC and the PDP, to derail the electoral process, will lead to revolts and boycott of the 2023 presidential election in the South, especially in the East.”

He claimed that the leadership of both political parties were under coercion from northern lobbyists and northern socio-cultural groups “to destroy the trust and confidence that bind Nigerians together through the rotational presidency between the North and the South.”

He said those making such moves ought to have learnt from the sad experiences of the North when they frustrated President Jonathan’s administration and installed Buhari in 2015.

“The aftermath of that betrayal is the worsening insecurity in the North,” Isiguzoro said.

He declared that, “we will encourage the Southern Governors and socio-cultural groups to mobilize our people and boycott the 2023 presidential election in the South, especially in the South-East if the Northern candidates emerge in APC and PDP.

"Whenever it gets to the turn of the Igbo, the narratives will always change against them.

“Whenever it’s the time for the Igbo to attain any position, there will be gang ups and clandestine networks to fuel crisis and disasters against them, but it won’t work this time. Igbos will surely survive all these political conspiracies against them.”

CrimeTwo Pump Action Wielding Armed Robbery Suspects Overpowered By Victim by Kuginzi(op): 9:03am On May 08, 2022
By Francis Ezediuno

The suspects according to information made available by the police sources at Dada Estate Division, revealed that the suspects, fully armed had arrived the home of Adedayo Adedamola aka Fryo located in Adetunji Estate around 2am on Saturday.

Politics2023: I’ll Use My Savings To Buy Forms, Decide Before Deadline, Says Emefiele by Kuginzi(op): 5:05am On May 08, 2022
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, on Saturday, said he was looking to God for direction on whether to contest or not for the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket in the primary scheduled for the end of the month.

He also stated that going into the contest would mean drawing down on his “hard-earned savings” of the past 35 years of service.

Emefiele’s reaction came barely 24 hours after a group of farmers and business people obtained the N100m nomination and expression of interest forms on his behalf at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, venue of the sale of forms.

The group urged the CBN boss to run for President.

But tweeting on Saturday, Emefiele said he was still unsure whether or not to officially declare his intention to run. He noted that the decision would be clarified before Tuesday’s deadline for the purchase and return of forms.

He tweeted, “I am humbled by the growing interest of those asking that I run for the office of President in the 2023 general elections. I have not come to that decision. I note and salute the sacrifices of those farmers and patriots going as far as raising personal funds and offering me the presidential nomination forms. I thank them most profusely.

“However, should I answer their calls and decide to seek presidential nomination, I will use my own hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to buy my own nomination forms without proxies in an open and transparent manner, in full compliance with the laws and constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“And should I not run for elected office, I will continue to serve and sacrifice for the good people of Nigeria under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“This is a serious decision that requires God’s divine intervention; in the next few days, the Almighty will so direct.”

Ezekwesili, Tambuwal, AAC call for Emelife’s resignation

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has asked the CBN boss to “stop playing hide and seek” over his intention to be Nigeria’s next President.

Ezekwesili, who is also the leader of the #BringBackOurGirls Movement, stated on her Twitter handle that Emelife should resign from his position in order to face his presidential ambition. She lamented that doubling as both a presidential aspirant and governor of the apex bank portends danger for the health of the country’s economy.

She tweeted, “I just read your waffling neither-here-nor-there tweet reacting to news of your payment of N100m for the APC nomination form for the 2023 presidential election. Seems you did not read what the APC spokesperson said to @Bloomberg. Resign. Stop embarrassing the country. Stop.

“This is for you. Time to end your low-grade hide-and-seek game that dangerously toys with the monetary authority of this country and its people. Resign.

“It is the legitimate aspiration to seek to be President of Nigeria but resign from CBN to pursue it.”

In his reaction, the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to immediately sack Emefiele.

Tambuwal, who is also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, told party delegates in Jalingo, Taraba State, where he went to solicit their support to become the presidential candidate of the party, said Emefiele’s open affiliation with the APC was dangerous for the country.

Meanwhile, the African Action Congress has asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to fire Emefiele following rumours that he had decided to contest the presidency.

PoliticsBuhari To Igbo Leaders: Only Court Can Decide Nnamdi Kanu’s Fate by Kuginzi(op): 12:49pm On May 07, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday declared that the ongoing treason trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu would run its full course, clearing doubts about the possibility of government letting him off the hook.

Buhari, responding to latest pleas from South East leaders for the release of the arrow head of the agitation for Biafra, said Kanu’s matter should be allowed to be properly adjudicated in court.

Unknown gunmen, apparently disappointed that Buhari made the trip in spite of the sit-at-home protest ordered by some groups, took out their anger on a motorist and a motorcyclist in the Ebonyi State capital: the vehicles were set ablaze.

However, two armed bandits suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB and its affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN), were killed on Tuesday in an encounter with the police at Agwa in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

"I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders regarding a wide range of options, and as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the courts where it will be properly adjudicated,” he said.

Unfortunately this barbaric act was visited on those who have committed their lives to protecting the lives of fellow citizens.

“Terrorists who have unfortunately brainwashed a segment of the population that continued to contribute their hard earned funds towards their hate filled messages but now have been terrorised through their brutal killings, truncation of commercial activities, restriction of freedom of movement, and the ability to exercise basic human rights must be fished out from amongst us, and it can only be done through the support of the people.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians for whom life is already tough and would like to go out and wean a good and honest living. There are many that fit this profile and the government owes them that obligation to protect their lives and property.

“I will once again repeat, no one has the right to carry an AK-47, and anyone in any part of the country doing so and is not a law enforcement officer is a threat to our peaceful coexistence and should be treated as such.”

Speaker after speaker at the meeting had pleaded with Buhari to grant amnesty to Kanu and other youths from the region in detention.

They included Chairman, Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Charles Mkpumai; Southeast Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Fr Abraham Nwali; Ohanaézè Ndígbo President-General George Obiozor; and First Republic Minister, Mbazulike Amaechi.

Eze Mkpuma asked for Buhari’s support for the agitation for his successor coming from the South East, saying: “We plead with you Mr. President to grant the plea for the South East to produce the next President of the country in 2023.

“We stand by you in all efforts towards the fight against insecurity in the South East and the country in general. We however plead with you as a compassionate father to temper justice with mercy in the case of our son, Nnamdi Kanu.

“We have started dialogue to ensure that all those who feel aggrieved are brought to round table discussion. We shall continue to support you and your administration. Do not listen to those advocating for interim government for they are inviting anarchy.

“We urge you to look inwards and build the rest administration around the South Easterner who has outstanding performance,” they said.

Mbazulike Amaechi said: “I want to see peace in this country before I join my ancestors.

“I want to see peace in the South East, particularly where there is upsurge of crisis and something that will lead to that peace is around the corner and we are asking you to give me the mandate and I will give you peace.

“I guarantee you this, Mr. President.

“We say in Igbo land that a mad man is owned by his people. If somebody was mad yesterday, and on guarantee of elders like me and other elders, I will bring him out and that is to get peace.

“Help us to get the peace and I will give you peace in this part of this country and also in Nigeria because I am a Nigerian, I took part in the struggle for the independence of this country,” he added.

PoliticsUK: Only IPOB Members Involved In Violence Will Be Denied Asylum by Kuginzi(op): 8:41am On May 07, 2022
The government of the United Kingdom (UK) says only violent members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) will be denied asylum in Britain.

Reacting to reports claiming that the UK added IPOB to its list of terrorist groups, the British High Commission (BHC) in Abuja, said the British government only acknowledged Nigeria’s classification of the group.

In a statement by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, a BHC spokesperson, the UK government said “all asylum and human rights claims made in the UK are considered on their individual facts in accordance with our obligations under the UN Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights, taking into account relevant background country information and case law”.

The high commission added that IPOB members who have committed violent crimes in Nigeria will not be granted asylum.

"This CPIN also acknowledges that the Nigerian government has proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organisation, some members of IPOB have reportedly used violence against the state and members of the public, and advises that persons who have committed human rights abuses must not be granted protection,” the statement read.

PoliticsMonday Sit-at-home Order A Slur To South-east – Ohanaeze President, Obiozor by Kuginzi(op): 6:23am On May 06, 2022
By Seun Opejobi

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor, has criticized the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, over the sit-at-home order in the South-East.

Obiozor said the sit-at-home order was a slur to the region.

Addressing Ohanaeze’s Ameobi at the body’s headquarters yesterday, Obiozor lamented that businessmen had incurred losses due to the sit-at-home order.

He also lamented the spate of insecurity across the South-East.

According to Obiozor: “The Monday sit at Home is a slur on the Igbo. It is strange for a group to face the barrel of the gun inwards. Many people have estimated the huge loss the South-East incurs on a weekly basis as a result of the sit-at-home order. Ohanaeze Ndigbo has tried severally to persuade our youths to realize the consequences of their actions.

"Insecurity has pervaded almost all parts of Nigeria, but each geo-political zone has its own peculiarity.

"The advent of insecurity in the South-East is both bizarre and dramatic. The South-East had been adjudged the most serene and peaceful zone in Nigeria until April 5, 2021, when gunmen attacked the Correctional Facility in Owerri, Imo State and freed a total of 1,844 prison inmates. Since the April 5 episode, insecurity in the South-East has attained an unprecedented unbearable crescendo.”

IPOB had initiated the Monday sit-at-home order to demand the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Following an outcry, the group limited the sit-at-home to only days Kanu would appear in court for his trial.

However, some unknown groups have been enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order.

PoliticsSokudo: Gunmen Are Criminals Not Agitators by Kuginzi(op): 6:13am On May 06, 2022
Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has said that gunmen and those armed with sophisticated weapons terrorising the people are not agitators but criminals who have seen crime as a lucrative business.

In an interactive session with landlords in Onitsha on Thursday, Soludo expressed deep concern that despite the extension of invitation by the state government to the gunmen to come out of their hiding and embrace dialogue, the criminals continued in their activities of killing, kidnapping and destruction because they saw criminality as a lucrative business.

He said the gunmen had continued in their illicit activities because the landlords and other critical stakeholders in the state had failed to expose them.

The governor pointed out that the session was called to interact and interface with the stakeholders with a view to proffering solutions to the challenges such as illegal structures, blockage of drainages, refuse dumps, traffic congestion, among others, bedevilling the state.

He noted that the major programmes of his administration at present included cleaning up of the state, security of lives and property and provision of critical infrastructure like roads.

He said, “With last Tuesday’s expiration of a two-week deadline given to those whose houses or shops were built on drainages, water channels and major roads to remove such structures, the government would commence the demolition of those houses any moment from now at the expense of the landlords.

“Criminals kidnapping people for ransom, killings and destruction are not agitating but engaging in lucrative criminality. We know where these criminals are.

"It is better for them to repent, drop their arms and come for empowerment or else, we will come after them and when we come, no house, bush or forest inhabited by them will be spared.

"You cannot force people to stay at home without going to their various places of business, force our children not to go to school and call it agitation. It is not agitation, but a criminal activity and very soon, all those will be addressed.

“The task forces for the enforcement of traffic offences and stoppage of all forms of criminal activities will be established.

“A bill for the enactment of law to punish landlords, contractors and government officials who approved lands on top of drainages, certified payments for contracts not yet completed or completed without specifications, would soon be sent to the state House of Assembly for legislation.”

A state lawmaker representing Onitsha North II Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Edward Ibuzo, said he was fully in support of Soludo’s planned demolition of 200 houses blocking drainages in Onitsha and environs, adding that it is an offence for someone to build on drainages, thus causing blockage of water channels.

PoliticsHow I Survived Assassination Attempt – Governor Wike Speaks On 2023 Presidential by Kuginzi(op): 8:37am On May 03, 2022
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has claimed that he was nearly assassinated while working as the Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Chibuike Amaechi, in 2007.

Wike was the former Chief of Staff to former Governor Rotimi Amaechi during his first tenure.

The governor, who is aspiring for the office of the President under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, also slammed President Muhammadu Buhari and those that brought him (Buhari) to power in 2015, describing the current system as a failure.

Wike suggested that President Buhari’s alleged failure was because people came together and gave him power even when he was not ready to serve the country, insisting that it was wrong for people to get power, especially when it comes to presidential power, on a platter of gold.

“If you remember, when I was the Chief of Staff, on the 3rd of December, 2007, I was nearly assassinated. I was nearly assassinated on December 3rd, 2007 if I can remember vividly,” Wike said during an interview with Channels Television.

Even at that point, I was a threat unknown to me. I’ve never one day said I want it on a platter of gold, never! In fact, when you give people things on a platter of gold, it doesn’t work well.

“Power is not given. Nobody is going to give you presidential power on a platter of gold.

“Take for example, President Buhari, people were saying, “give it to him, give it to him, he’s the messiah,” now look at what happens.

“That period they came to deceive Nigerians that ‘this is the only man who can solve the problems, this is the only man who has the key to Nigeria becoming one of the greatest countries’ and Nigerians were deceived and we all bought it. Now look at where we are today. They told Nigerians “if you don’t elect General Buhari, there’ll be no Nigeria again.” “

Politics2023: I Can Tell You My Seat-Mates In University - Wike by Kuginzi(op): 8:12am On May 03, 2022
By John Owen Nwachukwu

The Governor of Rivers State and 2023 presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governor Nyesom Wike, has said that he has never had issues with his school certificate.

Governor Wike also claimed that he attended the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State and the Rivers State University of Science and Technology and can mention his seat-mate while in those schools.

Wike is said to have attended Government Secondary School Eneka in Obiakpor, Rivers State and proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt where he studied political science and later went to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and studied law.

He obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from RSUST before proceeding to Law School in 1997. Wike holds a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies also from RSUST.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, on Monday, the former Minister said “As I speak to you now, I can tell you who was my seat-mate from year one, year two, year three, year four in the University of Port Harcourt and who was my seat-mate in the Rivers State University.”

“I’ve never had any controversy concerning my certificate. The schools I attended, nobody can say, ‘let’s go and ask’.

"And as I came for my youth service, I served in the former Gongola State …So I can tell you who my colleagues were as corpers,” he added.

PoliticsSubsidy Deductions Hit States Hard, Govs Owe Salaries, Workers Lament by Kuginzi(op): 8:11am On May 02, 2022
State workers and pensioners on Sunday lamented they were carrying the burden of a cash crunch in the country with many state governments failing to ensure regular payment of salaries, gratuities and other entitlements.

Labour leaders, who spoke separately with our correspondents in Ekiti, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Abia, Ondo, Edo and Kano states, noted that pensioners were worst hit by the failure of governors to perform their responsibilities.

Findings by our correspondents showed that deductions by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited from the Federation Account Allocation Committee had continued to deplete the funds being shared by the three tiers of government at FAAC meetings.

The NNPC had explained that its deductions from FAAC were due to the humongous subsidy spending it shouldered.

No FAAC remittance from NNPC in Q1, subsidy gulps N675.93bn – Reports

Since the beginning of the year, the NNPC has not been able to make remittances to the Federation Account due to its huge subsidy spending on petrol.

Figures obtained from the NNPC in Abuja showed that the oil firm spent N210.38bn, N219.78bn and N245.77bn as subsidies on petrol in January, February and March 2022 respectively, translating to N675.93bn during the three-month period.

On Wednesday, FAAC shared N725.57bn among the three tiers of government, as allocation for March 2022.

But instead of contributing to what was shared, the NNPC informed FAAC that it would deduct or recover N671.88bn from April 2022 proceed due for sharing at the May 2022 FAAC meeting.

The NNPC described the N671.88bn as value shortfall it incurred as it remained the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria and had been subsidising the commodity using billions of naira monthly.

The N725.57bn shared by the three tiers of government was from statutory revenue of N521.16bn and Value Added Tax of N204.4bn.

Investigations by The PUNCH showed that in most states, workers and pensioners were the ones bearing the brunt of subsidy deductions as states reneged on regular payment of salaries and gratuities.

Labour leaders in Benue State respectively lamented the plight of workers following the cash crunch affecting the state government.

Speaking to one of our correspondents on the phone, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Godwin Anya, said that state and local government workers in the state were groaning due to staggered payment of salaries.

Politics2023: Sule Lamido Goes Spiritual, Warns Jonathan by Kuginzi(op):
By Olalekan Bilesanmi and Rebecca Kenor

......You will suffer God’s wrath if you defect to APC

Explains why ex-President cannot return to power in ruling party.

‘It is for him to reflect on the love, the family bond of the PDP, the sacrifices made, the humiliation we went through, the vilification of the APC of his own government, the way he was being demonized, the way Wole Soyinka was calling his wife hippopotamus, and calling him clueless’

Controversy is raging over mounting calls on former President Goodluck Jonathan to defect from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest the 2023 presidential election. Several support groups have asked him to run. Penultimate Thursday, a youth group, known as the Nigerian Young Professionals in Diaspora (NYPD), gave him one week ultimatum to declare his presidential bid.
The group said Jonathan’s return to power would bring peace and stability to the country. Responding to the calls, the former President, last weekend, said he had not taken a decision. The calls are believed to have been instigated by some northern leaders who believe Jonathan’s back in power is a short cut to North’s return to presidency in 2027 as the former President will be entitled to only one term.

What’s President Jonathan doing to himself?

But in this interview, a top northern politician, Alhaji Sule Lamido, warns that Jonathan will be on the way to self-destruction if he yields to the calls, saying he will incur God’s wrath if he defects from PDP. Lamido, a former Minister of External Affairs and erstwhile governor of Jigawa State, explains why the former cannot return to power on the platform of APC.

There are pockets of crisis within your party across the country especially ahead of the screening of aspirants for the 2023 elections holding tomorrow. Will the screening not further polarise the party?

There is no human institution that is perfect. PDP is not claiming any perfection at all, neither is any party in the country nor you or Vanguard Newspapers. I think what is important is having people in the institution that have capacity, the ability and willingness to do the right thing. PDP has history; it has pedigree, formed by leaders of Nigeria in 1998 who are thinkers and philosophers. They knew what they formed and considered as PDP. So the PDP has history of experience and you have the political sagacity of the operators. The party is even stronger than before. It is much better now. I don’t think there is any cause for alarm.

Zoning and consensus remain a big problem in the PDP. Some of your party’s presidential aspirants have expressed objection to consensus while some zones are clamoring for the presidency to be zoned to them…

Again, I say PDP is a democratic party where members are free to express their views. It’s their right and freedom. It’s their fundamental right. Whatever might have been the perceived problem in the PDP, it is something we can really take care of. It can be addressed as a family under the same umbrella; we can come to agreement under the umbrella such that we can produce the best candidate for the country. I won’t delve into the issue of zoning because it is yet to be fully discussed. So, I don’t want to be presumptuous on the recommendation of the committee saddled with that. But I can tell you that whatever the perceived misgivings of any aspirant, it is his or her right to express it because it is their right.

They are free to pursue their aspirations; at the end of the day, it is for the best for the party. PDP is legendary. It is not like any other political party in Nigeria because it has history. PDP is an organic party; it has principles based on certain pillars. So, please stop bothering about PDP. All we need is your trust and we do the right thing.

It appears the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the PDP Northern Elders are not on the same page on the northern candidacy. NEF Secretary, Hakeem Baba Ahmed, said the endorsement by Professor Ango Abdulahi of some PDP presidential aspirants was right as it had the backing of the NEF. Yet, you are saying Ango’s position was personal…

It is you that don’t have the actual picture of the issues. The meeting we held on the platform of the Northern PDP Elders, the communique we issued said we were compelled to come as PDP Northern Elders. The purpose was to address an issue which was perceived to be the position of the North.

There is nothing like Northern PDP or Southern PDP. The issue we addressed was the statement made by Professor Ango Abdulahi which was thought to be on behalf of Northern Elders. So whatever might have been issued to the media was personal opinion or view of those who went there.

It is not a reflection of the view of the Northern Elders Forum because Ango said he was doing so in his own personal capacity and not on behalf of the Northern Elders Forum. What we did was to debunk any erroneous notion that that was a northern position. We don’t believe in division, whatever we say should not be divisive. We appealed as Nigerians. We are simply saying that Nigeria shouldn’t be abandoned while we are pursuing our personal goals. So, what we did was to clear any air of ambiguity in our position.

Please debunk it as well that the PDP Northern Elders have been bought over by Atiku Abubakar…

When do we as Nigerians grow up? When do we begin to behave as normal human beings? In all religions, God taught us about justice. When you see people and you begin to smear them without evidence, that is not fair. We are morally sinking. You are here saying that they are bought over by somebody. I feel very sad. So, it means that as Nigerians we can’t even think freely? So, whatever you say or do automatically means you are to be purchased. It doesn’t make sense to me. It is insulting. You are even insulting Atiku politically in Nigeria. He was Vice President of Nigeria, mind you. So, for him to make any political move, he has to buy people, he has to buy leaders; it doesn’t make sense.

We said in that press conference that we were there just for the purposes of debunking what Ango Abdulahi created. And you saying we are being bought by somebody? I don’t think you are being fair to us. In trying to extract stories that would make headlines… The media is there to principally to educate. Your report on politics is to further deepen political parties and political activities. You are supposed to mould opinion, opinion which is altruistic and beneficial to all; instead, you are pursuing the narrow thing thereby creating bigger problems. If I pin you down to ask who told you, you will not. You will say you don’t disclose your source or your source is protected.

You are just creating things in your own imagination. I am not talking to you as a person, but I am talking generally. You try to create something that is not there to see whether it will be precipitous.

The Federal Government granted pardon to some inmates including two former governors of Plateau and Taraba states, eliciting sharp criticisms. Are you in support of the government action?

I am being very honest with you. I am presently under EFCC prosecution for corruption through my government under President Goodluck Jonathan, for political purpose, which means the accusation is malicious. If I begin to vent and give opinion, I may like be talking about myself. So, presently, I don’t have anything to say, even if I want to say, this isn’t the right time to comment.

Insecurity is still very much on the front burner and certainly one of the factors deciding the election next year. APC claimed they are doing their best under the circumstance.

They said they are doing everything in their power; that is how far in terms of their capacity. You can’t flog a dead horse like OBJ said. They have been to their optimum. They can’t go beyond that. But the question is, is that good enough for Nigeria? They have confessed that they are doing everything. But whatever they doing is not good enough, despite the trust and support the people showed them. They are like a cup filled with water, once it is full, it is full, any other water poured on it cannot hold, it will automatically come down. They have reached their peak. Unfortunately, their best isn’t good enough for Nigerians because we don’t feel secure.

How do you feel that former President Jonathan is rumored to be planning to contest the coming 2023 presidential election and on the APC platform?

As Africans, Nigerians, we have a very strong culture of high morals. Before you leap, we should look at the platform we leap onto. The issue of Jonathan going to APC to be their flag bearer, I pray it is not true. I hope it is not true because if it is, he is inviting on himself self-destruction. This was somebody who came from a very humble and decent background. He came from a family with good upbringing and high moral values. That is what he said. And he grew up in life. He got education.

He became a Director in OMPADEC. And through good fortune and God guidance, he was picked to be deputy governor. The same good fortune and God guidance followed Jonathan, he became a governor. The same God and good fortune followed this kid from a very humble background, he became Nigeria’s Vice President.

The same God and good fortune following this humble kid, he became Nigeria’s President, in a country of 200 million people. Only three people have become Nigerian President in the last 14 years under the PDP. All these achievements he made and his political ascendancy were under the PDP platform, which mean PDP gave him his biggest world any PDP member can get in Nigeria. It is for him to reflect on the love, the family bond of the PDP, the sacrifices made, the humiliation we went through, the vilification of the APC of his own government, the way he was being demonized, the way Wole Soyinka was calling his wife hippopotamus, and calling him clueless. The entire APC 2013, 2014 literally destroyed him. He should be able reflect. Of course we had the heartache, the pains, humiliation and persecution the people of the North had in 2014 for supporting Jonathan. There was a man from Katagum, his house was destroyed and burnt down in Azare just because he was supporting Jonathan.

In Bauchi, our people were persecuted and burnt. In Kano, my office was burnt down. And the mob was heading towards my house to burn down my house and kill my family members alive, only for the army to intervene. In Zamfara, people received 50 lashes to be cleaned of the Jonathan dirt. People were going from house to house to give them 50 lashes because of Jonathan.

The same thing happened in Sokoto. The people of the North stood for Jonathan because they were working for Nigeria because they believed in Nigeria. I was called a Christian and pastor because of Jonathan. I was called anti-Islam because of Jonathan. Everything evil was me and all PDP people who supported Jonathan. That means all they went through, the pain, the humiliation, for supporting Jonathan in 2014 was nothing. Even Jega (then-INEC Chairman) was not left out. We went through hell in 2014 all for Jonathan. He called me during the election in Jigawa. I said “sir”, he said “I hope you are safe”. I said “don’t worry sir. We are home and dry”. He said “thank God”.

Even though Buhari won in my state (Jigawa), in the polling units in my ward, he scored zero. I am taking the pain of this narration that Nigerians suffered a lot for Jonathan. And God has been good to Jonathan. It is for him now to reflect and see those people who demonized him, who called him evil, who said Boko Haram was PDP company in 2014. Buhari with APC members went on demonstration because fuel price was increased to 60-something naira. He (Buhari) was on the streets demonstrating. Let him check what El-Rufai (Kaduna governor) said about him. Let him go check what Lai Mohammed said about him. Let him go and check what the APC propaganda machine said about him in 2014. He lost.

Politics2023 Presidency: Ndigbo Not Happy With PDP – Ohanaeze by Kuginzi(op): 9:59am On May 01, 2022
By Emmanuel Uzodinma

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze has expressed its displeasure with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over its handling of the zoning of the party’s presidential ticket.

DAILY POST reports that the PDP has gone ahead to screen all the presidential aspirants on its platform despite huge calls that the position be zoned to the South-East.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Ohanaeze Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, he accused the PDP of insincerity.

“Ndigbo are not happy with the way PDP has abused the principles of the zoning formula enshrined in her constitution.

“This is unacceptable and has brought open the suspicion that the PDP NWC is not sincere with the Igbos after milking the Igbo votes for 20 years.

“Any attempts by the NWC to manipulate the primaries in the favour of Atiku or any other Northerner will spell doom for the party,” Isiguzoro warned.

He said Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi remained the best choice for the PDP.

“Both aspirants have shown courage and Igbo ingenuity in governance with a proven track record of accomplishments in Rivers and the Anambra States as Governors.

“We have monitored the progress made by the two Igbo sons and approved that their approaches to issues of the day and the dilemma facing Nigeria have sparked rays of hope for a better Nigeria”.

He further stated that, “Governor Wike has worked very hard to strengthen PDP as an opposition political party. This is why we are in support of Governors Ikpeazu and Ugwuanyi’s efforts to assist the Ohanaeze’s mandate of recovering Igbos in the South-South zone.

“It has been a herculean task to unite our kith and kin from South-South, who are part of us in line with the Constitution of Ohanaeze. All Igbo speaking States of Ohanaeze, including Ikwerre in Rivers and Anioma in Delta are part of the 2023 Igbo Presidency project.”

Politics2023: N100m Nomination Form Fee With Minimum Wage At N30k Is ‘Immoral’ – Falana by Kuginzi(op): 8:32am On Apr 30, 2022
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has faulted the N100m presidential nomination form fee set by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as “immoral” since the country’s minimum is N30,000.

Falana made the comment on Thursday, days after the APC fixed the prices for nomination forms for those vying for seats in the 2023 elections. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also pegged its presidential form fee at N40m.

“Those outrageous nomination fees are immoral, insensitive, and illegal,” he said during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The immorality of it is that we have over 90 million Nigerians that have been classified poor. In a country where the minimum wage is about N30,000 and it is not paid by some states, you can’t say you are collecting N100 million or N40 million to purchase a form,” he explained.

According to him, the move violates the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Nigerian constitution.

Again, section 42 of the Nigerian constitution provides that nobody shall be subjected to any restriction or discrimination on the basis of class, fortune, sex, or whatever,” the constitutional lawyer added.

“If these parties are saying they want to exclude unserious people, that if you cannot mobilise N100 million or N40 million, you cannot attain some positions in your country. That is discriminatory and illegal.

"No restriction can be erected to prevent you from participating in the politics of the country. You are now saying that the politics of the country is for moneybags or fat cats. That is against the spirit and the letters of the constitution.”

Not For The Rich’
Falana’s comment comes on the heels of debates about the prices for nomination forms by the APC.

But the party’s spokesman Felix Morka says the criticisms about the fees are not justified.

According to him, no economy anywhere else in the world is perfect and despite that, “there are people who still live opulent lives ad make legitimate money” in Nigeria.

"Our party is not for the rich,” he stated. “The party came to a decision that the value placed on these forms are justified”.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu Appeals Court Judgement Retaining Seven Of 15 Charges Against Him by Kuginzi(op): 8:19am On Apr 30, 2022
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed a recent ruling of the Federal High Court which struck out eight out of the 15-count charge filed against him.
Kanu had been standing trial on an amended 15-count charge bordering on treasonable felony.

On April 8, Binta Nyako, the judge, ruling on Kanu’s application on Friday, struck out counts 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
This means the IPOB leader is to stand trial on counts 1,2,3,4,5,8 and 15.
But in the appeal issued on Friday and signed by his lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome, as obtained by SaharaReporters, Kanu prayed the court of appeal in Abuja to dismiss the remaining charges against him and discharge him.
The separatist leader faulted Nyako's ruling on the case, arguing that the judge erred in several areas which amount to a "miscarriage of justice".
It reads, “Ground one: error in law. The learned trial judge erred in law when he failed to consider, make a finding of facts and accordingly pronounce on issue one raised for the trial Court’s determination, relating to the extraordinary rendition of the Appellant, and thereby occasioned a miscarriage of justice.

Ground two: error in law. The learned trial Judge erred in Law, when he held that “the defendant is being charged under Section 1(2) of the Terrorism Act, which has been reproduced above, any offence alleged to have been committed “within” or “outside” Nigeria can be brought under the Act”, thereby occasioning a miscarriage of justice.”
“Ground three: error in law. The learned trial Judge erred in law, when he held that although the status of the Indigenous People of Biafra as a proscribed organization is a subject matter before the Court of Appeal, but as long as the appeal has not been determined, the order of Court proscribing is still in force until set aside and thereby occasioning a miscarriage of justice.
“Ground four: error in law. The learned trial Judge erred in law when in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 216(4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, suo motu amended count 15 of the charge, which is founded on an allegation of importation of a radio transmitter in Ubuluisiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, and proceeded to assume jurisdiction over offences allegedly committed outside its territorial jurisdiction, and thereby occasioned a miscarriage of justice.

"Ground five: error in law. The learned trial Judge erred in law when he held that trials before the Federal High Court are summary, and consequently ruled that counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 show some semblance of allegation of an offence on which the Court can proceed to trial, and thereby occasioned a miscarriage of justice".

Foreign AffairsUN Chief, Guterres To Visit Nigeria After Russia, Ukraine Trip by Kuginzi(op): 7:38am On Apr 30, 2022
By Wale Odunsi

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres is set to embark on a Ramadan solidarity visit to three West African nations.

The visit to Nigeria, Senegal and Niger will begin on Saturday; Guterres is expected to be in Nigeria on Tuesday.

Deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters on Friday in New York, United States, that the UN chief’s visit was in respect of his annual Ramadan visit.

Guterres began the courtesy calls when he was High Commissioner for Refugees, but was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He will highlight the insecurity in Nigeria and express solidarity with victims of terrorism in the country and the region, Haq told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

On Saturday evening, he expects to be in Senegal. Then from there, we expect him to travel onwards on Monday to Niger and then on Tuesday to Nigeria,” Haq disclosed.

“He will take part in Eid celebrations with President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger and he is scheduled to meet President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.”

Haq said Guterres would meet and share an Iftar dinner with President Macky Sall of Senegal, who assumed the Presidency of the African Union earlier in 2022.

Guterres will have meetings with senior government officials as well as civil society representatives, including women, youth groups and religious leaders.

He will meet families deeply affected by violence and instability in the Sahel, including people internally displaced and refugees”, the spokesman said.

The visit of Guterres to West Africa followed his trip to Russia and Ukraine, the highest level trip of a world leader to the two countries at war.

CultureNext Alaafin Will Inherit Oba Adeyemi’s Wives –archbishop Ladigbolu by Kuginzi(op):
Archbishop Emeritus of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Reverend Ayo Ladigbolu, who is from the Agunloye Ruling House of Oyo Kingdom, speaks to OLUFEMI OLANIYI about the passage of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the controversies surrounding his burial, the wives left behind by the monarch and succession tradition to the ancient stool

You were very close to the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who joined his ancestors on Friday, April 22, 2022. How will you describe the late monarch?

First and foremost, let me seize this opportunity to appreciate the overwhelming sympathy that has been pouring into Oyo and the palace from around the world since the passing of our father and king. It was God’s time for Baba to go. He remained very active till he passed away. I was really surprised that he wrote a paper after my book launch on March 25. He wrote a 13-page paper, which he forwarded to one of the royal fathers in Yorubaland and a copy of which I have just received. What Baba told me after the book launch was that he was going to rest. I am surprised that he could still write a 13-page paper on national issues. The purpose is that he wanted a better Nigeria and that is Oba Adeyemi for you.

He loved this land so much; he was passionate about Yorubaland and the roles that we should play in creating a better Nigeria. That is the man we are mourning and that is the man we are celebrating. I think he certainly came, saw and conquered. He loved Nigeria and that was the reason he could still engage himself in such a task at that age despite being very exhausted after the book launch.

As someone very close to the monarch, was there anything unusual about his behaviour towards his last moments?

Kabiyesi never behaved in any strange or abnormal way, to my own knowledge.

What was the nature of his sickness and was there any plan to fly him abroad before he gave up?

I am not aware of any plan to take him abroad for treatment but he told me he wanted to take his rest after my book launch in March. I knew he needed the rest. So anywhere he wished to take his rest was his choice. People should not make noise about the circumstances that led to his death; the reality is that he is gone and they should allow him to rest.

The remains of Oba Adeyemi was brought out in the public and the Muslims prayed on it but a traditionalist, Oba Adetoyese Olakitan, said that was wrong because there could be negative consequences. What is your take on this?

What I can say is that the person who said that has not read Kabiyesi’s personal opinion on the burial of kings. I think it was late last year when the Ogun State House of Assembly was debating the issue of the burial of traditional rulers that Kabiyesi dabbled in that matter and clearly queried what the government’s business was in the mode or manner of the burial rites of traditional rulers. He said traditional rulers should be allowed to be buried according to their religious convictions and nobody will deny the fact that Kabiyesi Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, was a Muslim – a staunch Muslim who never hid his devotion to Islam. He was an Amir Hajj, the leader of all the pilgrims from this great land to the holy land of Mecca and Medina. Were people’s eyes closed when these were happening? So, how can they now be surprised or shocked by the reality that he deserved to be buried in the way of his own personal religion?

Of course, the king is the king of all religions in our culture and the palace is a confluence of all religions and this king was tolerant of all religions, but that does not take away from him the right to believe in whatever religion he chose. If anybody is quarrelling over that and threatening hell and brimstone, I wish them good luck. I know the God who the Muslims believe and worship and to whom the imam said his prayers to commit the soul of the departed monarch is there. If whoever made that comment wants to call on another god to deal with the people, then it is left to him.

Despite being an emeritus Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria, you are a lover of culture and you’re very close to the palace, being a prince yourself. How do you reconcile traditional issues with religious matters?

I have said this for the umpteenth time that my culture is me and that is what made me available to the church; my upbringing in the palace during the reign of Oba Siyanbola Onikepe Ladigbolu and Oba Bello Gbadegsin Ladigbolu II, and of course, my closeness to Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who just passed away. You will see that most of my life has been lived within the palace or within the precinct of the palace. That is what enriched my ministry and what made me Ayo Ladigbolu. I cannot separate myself from the holistic embrace of my culture. But that doesn’t mean that I will tolerate paganism or anything that is not the way of God, like idol worshiping and so on. But my culture is me.

But you were the chairman of the installation committee of the Aare Ona Kakanfo. Was idol worshiping not part of the rites performed then?

The installation of the Aare Ona Kakanfo was the largest ceremonial event in the Oyo Empire up to date. We did it well to the glory of God and we promoted our culture. Everything we did that time had nothing to do with ritual or anything which is against God’s laws. Indeed, I may reveal to the world today that when I said I was taking the Aare Ona Kakanfo into seclusion, what I did was to organise a retreat for him, but people did not know that. The retreat was about how to run life. I invited experts and leaders in different areas to talk to him about his position and title, and I helped him up there for three days in a secluded place, but a lot of people said different things; they said Ladigbolu had gone to pour oil on Aare Ona Kakanfo’s head, he had gone to put incisions on his head and all that. I know what I did. I respect my culture and love my God and I seek to obey the word of God.

Tell us a bit about Baba Kekere, said to be the oldest hand in the palace and has served at least three Alaafins. What is his age?

Nobody knows his real age. Everybody is guessing and everybody’s guess is right.

What exactly is his work in the palace?

He is an aide to Alaafin. He is one of the many aides of the Alaafin.

Let’s talk about the wives that Oba Adeyemi left behind; what will be their fate?

The new king will inherit them and that is the tradition, but you know things are changing now. Once a woman is married to the Alaafin they are married forever to the Alaafin. You know circumstances of life are changing and we have to adjust to the changing trends.

PoliticsOsun 2022: INEC Warns Against Vote Buying, Selling by Kuginzi(op): 8:01am On Apr 28, 2022
By Francis Ezediuno

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that voter education and enlightenment about elections is an essential ingredient for a free, fair and credible election.

Professor AbdulGaniy Olayinka Raji, the Osun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) made this known at the Voter Education Implementation Workshop in Osogbo, on Wednesday.

Professor Raji also condemned that act of vote buying and selling, adding that INEC does not condone it.

The Osun INEC boss stated that the commission has powers to arrest and prosecute any individual found within the polling station engaging in vote buying and selling.

Pointing out that the commission, however, had no powers to arrest anybody doing so outside the voting area, he called on politicians to go out and convince the electorates.

The INEC Director for Voter Education and Publicity, Ayodele Victor Aluko in his address held that voter education and enlightenment were critical to the mobilisation and effective participation of voters in the electoral process.

Represented by Mary Nkem, Deputy Director, Voter Education, he also disclosed that the public depended on the commission for information regarding the electoral process to help them not to only participate, but to reaffirm their confidence in the readiness and ability of the commission to conduct free, fair, inclusive and acceptable elections.

According to him, “The Commission has made and continues to make several in-exhaustive efforts to enhance the electoral process.

"In view of the above, it is essential for the public to be enlightened regularly in order to ensure that they are properly aware of the efforts of the Commission and their roles and responsibilities in each of the steps being taken by the Commission.

“This will make them understand how these improvements can further strengthen the electoral process to become transparent.”

PoliticsI'm Ready To Be Jailed - Ogun PDP Governorship Aspirant Sowunmi by Kuginzi(op): 5:00am On Apr 28, 2022
By Adejoke Adeleye

A governorship aspirant under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Sowunmi has declared his readiness to go to jail if he is found guilty of looting resources of the state if elected.

Sowunmi said this while hosting journalists to Iftar (Breaking the fast) with journalists in his home country in Abeokuta.

He also vowed to probe and prosecute past governors of the state with questionable characters if elected.

Sowunmi who expressed confidence in winning the party’s governorship ticket, vowed to run inclusive government when elected governor of the state.

The governorship aspirant who was the spokesperson for the PDP Presidential candidate in 2019 election, expressed worry over the high rate of debt incurred by the incumbent and previous governors of the state, adding that future of the citizens has been tied down with so many debts.

Declaring his plan to probe looters of the state resources, Sowunmi urged stakeholders and residents of the state to probe him if he had any questionable character.

“I’m chasing immortality by the policies and programmes that we will run here. And if one day you find me a thief, jail me, because I will jail those who have stolen before me.

“Let nobody be deceived, I’m not asking to lead Ogun so that we can pamper ourselves. Government business is a sacred trust which you hold on behalf of all the collectives.

“This is Ogun, The vast majority of people living here are bona-fide citizens of this place whose parents are the owners of this land. You can not be in charge of our land, assets, taxes and goodwill, and all you will do is to steal and they will not probe you. You must be joking.”

He also expressed concern over high rate of insecurity in the state, adding that he would use technology to resolve challenges when elected governor of the state.

“Biometric capturing of residents would assist in easy identification of culprits each time an offence is committed for diligent prosecution”.

He also noted that he will not adopt any form of Public Private Partnership(PPP) unless such private company is ready to tell him how many of the state citizen are working with it and how many more it is willing to employ.

CrimeSnake Bites Market Woman, Chases Away Traders In Calabar by Kuginzi(op): 4:42am On Apr 28, 2022
By Asare Asare

One trader, Mrs. Nkoyo Ekpenyong, 63, was reportedly bitten by a reptile, suspected to be a snake at the popular Watts Market in Calabar Wednesday evening.

DAILY POST learnt that said the snake reportedly emerged from the mountain of wastes stacked on the road, which lies in front of the Atakpa police station.

The unsuspecting woman had her wares, which included food items, displayed next to the wastes.

A bystander, Philip Akpan, who was buying some stuff nearby, said the snake bit her on the ankle and then proceeded to chase other traders, buyers and bystanders.

“The snake had emerged from the heaps of refuse, which were all over the market and other streets.

“The snake tried to escape. In the process, it chased away other traders.”

At Mbukpa market, the story is the same, as heaps of refuse have also blocked the Mbukpa and Ambo Roads, making market women who sold on the road to vacate.

In the last three weeks, there has been a resurgence of wastes piling up all over the once clean city of Calabar.

Many streets in Calabar South LGA and major roads have been blocked by the wastes.

For over three weeks, a resident, Titus Unwana said government agencies responsible for evacuating them have refused to do so.

There are reports that waste contractors have not been paid by the government for over three months.

Commissioner for Environment in the state, Mfon Bassey could not be reached for comment.

But government sources who refused to be named, said a brother to Governor Ben Ayade was in charge of waste evacuation.

PoliticsExplosive Kills Three Soldiers In Katsina by Kuginzi(op): 4:33am On Apr 28, 2022
