By Godfrey George Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday said in the early days of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, he was told by the founders of the terrorist group that poverty and unemployment drove them into the crime. He however warned that the country’s over 20 million out-of-school children were a breeding ground for more ‘Boko Haram members of the future’ if not urgently tackled. He stated these at the launch of a book titled, ‘Pillars of Statecraft: Nation-building in a changing world’ authored by his daughter, Dr Kofo Obasanjo-Blackshire, at an event in Lagos. Responding to a question by a member of the audience on why government policies had become more political than people-centered in recent times, he said part of the country’s major problems was looking for scapegoats for its problems. He stated further, “During the early days of Boko Haram, when the man who started the movement was said to have been killed, I said I wanted to meet with the members of the group to talk to them and know what they wanted. “I met with their representatives and found out that they needed nothing but a better life for themselves. Can we blame them for wanting a better life for themselves? “They said they believed in Sharia Law. I told them that Sharia was not a problem in Nigeria. It is part of our constitution.” According to the former president, some of the members of the insurgent group told him that they went to school but had no jobs. He added, “Do we blame them if after four years, they have no jobs? Are they not entitled to a livelihood? This boils down to one of the P’s of nation-building – politics – which talks about governance and leadership. “If that (leadership) is not properly taken care of, every other thing will go haywire,” he said. He also added that Nigerians must learn to face their own problems squarely rather than blaming others for it. He said, “We must ask, ‘What do we do with our people? How do we raise and value them? How do we value them?’ “We have over 20 million out-of-school children. Google how many countries in the world have less than 20m. That doesn’t worry us? Are you thinking there will be no Boko Haram tomorrow? "Those are the foundations of your Boko Haram tomorrow. That should be our concern. We should not say it is externally induced. Is poverty also externally induced? Poverty is the conscious, unconscious choice of our leaders. If we say no; it would be no. If we say yes; it would be yes.” During the panel session, which Obasanjo was a part of, the elder statesman highlighted what he termed ‘The Five P’s of Nation-Building”, which, according to him, are population, prosperity, protection, politics and partnerships. Addressing the sixth P – prayer and pleasing God – which was introduced by Kofo, and to whether Nigeria fell into a failed, failing, or weak state, he said, “I take the condition of our states now as work-in-progress. We cannot do anything until we have finished the work of statehood. Speaking of an episode he had with a former World Bank President when he was Nigeria’s Military Head of State, Obasanjo said the West knew Nigeria’s weaknesses and that when leaders show them the weakness, they exploit it. He added, “There is a level of fragility in every state. No state is perfect, even America. I used to joke with my American friends that God gave them Trump to show that they are humans as well, and we are, more or less, the same.” He added that for Nigeria’s democracy to work, the country must learn to manage its diversity, adding that all other forms of government – autocracy, plutocracy, gerontocracy, etcetera – do not really work for a long time. Kofo, in her remark, noted that she had embarked on the course based on the advice of her father during a trip in 2017 after expressing a desire to serve others. She stated, “As a young adult, I was incensed at the injustice and persistent corruption I observed in Nigeria. The disparity between the nation’s resources and the living standards of the average Nigerian brought me to my feet in outrage and frustration during conversations,” she said. https://punchng.com/bharam-founders-told-me-poverty-unemployment-caused-insurgency-obasanjo/

THE Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) of Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has warned the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi to stop using the name of Biafra to campaign. The group, led by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, declares that the actualization of the sovereign State of Biafra is not in anybody’s hand, but God’s. In a statement signed by Chris Mocha and made available to The Nation, BIM -MASSOB said yesterday that it was not against the February 25 presidential election, adding that anyone that had his or her Permanent Voter Register (PVC) should exercise his rights. He said they were sending a strong warning to politicians who were in the habit of using the name of Biafra during their political campaigns. The group said Obi and his members were saying that if they were elected, their government would end Biafra agitations in the East. Is it still possible to stop Biafra? Mocha queried. According to him, “Over 3 million innocent lives had been wasted from 1967 till date and properties worth trillions of naira belonging to Igbo of South East destroyed in the cause of Biafra.” “Politician can only give what they have in stock. Even if an Igbo man eventually emerged Nigerian President, such a President can never stop the much awaited emergence of the Republic of Biafra. Biafra is now or never. There is no amount of false hopes by these politicians to woo voters in the name of Biafra that will ever give anyone of them “a clear lead at the poll.” BIM -MASSOB said. https://thenationonlineng.net/bim-massob-to-obi-stop-using-biafra-to-campaign/

A chieftain of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prince Richard Ozobu, has said that the records and actions of the presidential candidate of the Labour party, Mr. Peter Obi, during his tenure as the Governor of Anambra State, disqualifies him from contesting for the presidency of Nigeria. Ozobu, who said the chances of the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 election are too slim, alleged that Obi doesn’t believe in democracy as he refused to conduct council polls in throughout his eight years tenure as the Governor of Anambra State. He further stated that Obi abandoned the political party on which he rode to office, despite making his promises that he will never leave APGA for another party. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo chieftain insisted that Nigerians especially the Igbo should look at Obi’s past records of governance in Anambra state and consider whether he can actually be trusted to keep the promises he has been making to Nigerians. He warned the Igbo against what he described as ‘committing another political blunder by casting their eggs in one basket’ and voting for the former governor, adding that Labour Party lacks the structures and organization to win the 2023 presidential election. His words; “We must look at Peter Obi’s past records. It is not enough to say that he is an Igbo man. We have to look at his records. Whether or not he is the right candidate is the issue. This is a former Governor that has been politically inconsistent, joining three political parties within the last ten years. This is a man who refused to conduct local government elections as the Governor of Anambra state for eight years. Then, how do you call somebody with such nasty record a democrat? Through this action, he stifled the growth of the local government system in his state. Obi stunted the growth of politicians who could have passed through the local government system in the eight years Obi governed Anambra state and refused to conduct council polls. People say he is humble and simple, but presidency goes beyond these things. Somebody told me that Obi is an apostle of reducing the cost of governance. Reducing the cost of governance was one of the reasons why he couldn’t do what the Constitution said in terms of conducting local government elections in Anambra state, for which he was impeached as Governor. Obi has too many theoretical ideas about governance. These theories won’t help the South East or the country. “I don’t see Peter Obi as a good and saleable candidate that the Igbo should crack their heads for. It is not just being an Igbo; you must also have the right qualities. The Igbo have been excellent in trade and commerce but we need to get same quality in politics, governance and administration. Look at the massive youth unemployment and insecurity we have in the South East. How many jobs did Peter Obi create in Anambra state during his tenure as governor? “Obi started from APGA as a governor. We expected that he would have built APGA after using the platform to govern Anambra state for eight years. APGA was formed to be a core platform to Igbo spring board in politics. During the formation of APGA, I can tell you that Governors of Igbo extraction from other political parties made contributions. One expected that Obi would have remained in APGA to build the party. Obi made promises not to abandon APGA, but he never kept the promise. He defected to the PDP, probably seeking for more political heights for himself. Obi handed over Anambra state to a successor who failed as governor. Without sounding immodest, Obi’s successor, Willie Obiano was a disappointment as Governor. He arbitrarily chose his successor and Obiano turned out to be a mistake in governance of Anambra state. And I’m yet to hear Obi condemn the squander mania and poor performance of his successor. The Igbo have an adage which says that charity begins at home. How well did Obi perform at home? “Now, he is contesting for the presidency on the platform of a party that lacks structure nationwide. Obi can’t play the game well because he doesn’t understand the political field and the rules. Emphasizing on the need for alliances that could boost electoral success, Ozobu insisted that the Labour Party lacks the structures and capacity to win the presidential election in 2023. ‘Where are the alliances that the Labour party has built to win the presidential election? Of course, you must build alliances to win. You can’t just stand up to say you are contesting for the presidency, there must be alliances otherwise you are just contesting to make up the numbers. You are calling on Igbo people to support Obi, but have you cared to ask if his running mate, Datti , was actually being backed by the North? Have you also asked if the Northern interest is truly behind Datti? This is where the alliances come in. The Igbo need to do a good check and negotiate with one of the presidential candidates who can deliver to us what we need. The Buhari presidency has brought the Igbo lots of infrastructure, not from those representing the Igbo as Ministers and National Assembly. We need to be cautious with our choices in 2023. On the way forward for the South East zone in 2023, he said; “Our dilemma has been bad leadership. We put our eggs in one basket and failed to negotiate when others were doing so. It is unfortunate that our leaders have not learnt from the mistakes of the past .We need to ask questions about what has happened to the federal allocations that have accrued to the South East zone since 1999. For 2023, we must work very hard and negotiate well in 2023; otherwise we will continue to lament marginalization after the 2023 presidential election must have been won by those who we refuse to negotiate with.” https://justnews.ng/2023-peter-obis-records-as-governor-disqualifies-him-from-presidency-ozobu/

Former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adamu Garba, has advised the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi to step down for his principal, the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Garba disclosed this on his Twitter handle on Thursday. He advised Obi to step down and support the candidate of the APC, Tinubu. His words: Peter Obi’s disappointing rally in Port Harcourt today should serve as a perfect breakfast from his aspiration. "He should immediately step down & endorse the real and truly prepared Presidential Candidate; Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu & stop isolating Southeast from the center. However, when asked the position he (Peter Obi) would be given if he accepts to step down for Tinubu, Garba opined: “He’ll be assigned to monitor Alaka bridge & keep counting daily container traffic to and from Apapa ports. That’ll fit him because he loves containers too much.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/12/step-down-for-tinubu-adamu-garba-advises-peter-obi/

By Seun Opejobi Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, says his client needs surgery. Ejimakor said the Nigerian government knew that Kanu needed surgery since August but ignored it. He said Kanu’s medical condition was enough reason for the Nigerian Government to release him. In a tweet, Ejimakor wrote: “For the avoidance of any doubt, the Nigerian government knew since August 2022 that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu requires surgery. Besides the Court orders, this is enough to release him or accord him his right to independent medical care. It’s a universal norm.” Recently, Ejimakor said Kanu was suffering from a heart problem and mineral deficiencies that required a specialist. Ejimakor claimed that the Department of State Services, DSS, denied Kanu his medication for nine days. He also claimed that the DSS denied the IPOB leader food. Kanu has been locked up since June 2021, when he was arrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition. Since his arrest, the courts in Nigeria have granted him bail, but the government has refused to release him. https://dailypost.ng/2022/12/25/buhari-govt-knows-nnamdi-kanu-needs-surgery-ipob-lawyer-ejimakor/

Rapper Speed Darlington has claimed men prefer marrying Yoruba to their Igbo counterparts. The controversial US-based entertainer argued Yoruba girls are more ‘sensible’ and great at picking reasonable men. He claimed Igbo girls often ‘visit native doctors’ to obtain ‘charms’ to attracting and controlling men. The “Akamu” singer made these claims during a live TikTok session, adding the ‘submissive nature of Yoruba women endears them to men’. Akpi also insisted that Igbo women constitute the highest percentage of people that visit churches, seeking miracles and divine intervention. According to him, whenever a cleric makes the call for single ladies who are searching for husbands to come out, the Igbo women are mostly the ones that troop out to the altar. https://thenationonlineng.net/why-men-prefer-marrying-yoruba-to-igbo-girls-speed-darlington/

The Indigenous People of Biafra has accused the Federal Government of “systematically” killing its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The pro-Biafran group said it was high time the whole world spoke against the atrocity going on in the DSS Abuja dungeon against the leader of the IPOB. It also claimed that the Federal Government had deliberately planned to eliminate Kanu, at the DSS solitary confinement. These were contained in a statement made available to journalists by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful on Saturday. The statement read, “The Federal Government has deliberately planned to eliminate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is illegally detained in DSS solitary confinement. “Kanu is battling heart problems and some mineral deficiencies which require medical specialists’ attention, but the Federal Government has refused to release him as the courts have ordered and has not allowed him access to his personal physicians. “Instead, they have resorted to patronising roadside pharmacies for his drug, which we see as a systematic and gradual diminishing of his life and final elimination method. A few days ago, IPOB legal team members and a brother of Kanu visited him in the DSS custody where he informed them that the DSS agents have not given him his prescribed drugs for nine days and more. More so, the DSS hasn’t given him food for some days, claiming that they don’t have money for his food and drugs. How preposterous! “We, the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, therefore, call on the Federal Government to release Kanu immediately if they can’t afford his medications and food. “IPOB is more than capable to provide for our leader the best medical services in the world and can give him any food of his choice, but it is their responsibility to ensure that he feeds well with good medical attention because they have illegally keeping him in prison. IPOB will not take it lightly with them if anything untoward happens to him. They cannot succeed breaking him down. “We, in IPOB, understand the recent actions of the DSS as a plot to systematically diminish and finally kill Kanu by starving him of his drugs and food. But we wish to remind the Nigeria government and all who are remotely interested in Nigeria to bear in mind that IPOB and in fact Biafrans will wage unending wars with the Nigerian state if anything untoward happens to Kanu. “This is not a threat but a promise that generations of Biafrans must keep even after Biafra Nation has been restored. Several times, we have called on Mallam Abubakar Malami and his collaborators to release Kanu as the courts of competent jurisdictions have ordered. “More so, the United Nations Working Group gave directives for Kanu to be released and be compensated by this Nigeria government, but Malami, the Fulani cabals, and other self-seeking politicians have refused to obey court verdicts.” https://punchng.com/kanu-mustnt-die-in-prison-ipob-warns-fg/ |

By Sharon Osaji Reactions have trailed the interview of the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, held Friday night on the Cable News Network. Nigerians on social media have had a lot to say about the interview. The interview which was scheduled to hold earlier in September was moved twice and speculations about whether it would ever hold again filled the social media space. It was however, announced on the CNN’s Zain Asher’s Twitter handle that the interview would hold at 5pm on Friday. Since the interview aired, the Nigerian social media space has been blowing up with so many reactions. From Twitter, @promyxx1 said, “This is not the kind of politics Atiku and Tinubu are used too…Peter Obi ‘don dey carry them go where dem no know.’ ” @AdaAwgbu_ said, “Peter Obi in the last three months, has given Nigeria more public image boost than all our Ministers of Information and Foreign Affairs put together have done in the last ten years." @UzoanyaP said, “The best time to be called a Nigerian was in 1960. Another best time is now! Peter Obi has filled up my pot of hope for a better Nigeria. #PeterObionCNN.” Some other tweeps had something different to say, “Zain Asher Ejiofor is an Igbo girl, Enugu State precisely. You don’t expect a fair interview from someone with an interest.” @ennyola0015 said. @DanielRegha also stated that, “Peter Obi did not state how he intends to fix Nigeria, all he said are already known and has been said by candidates before him. Giving speeches is on thing, but taking action is another. Furthermore, his performance as a governor in Anambra is greatly overrated. No offense.” https://punchng.com/mixed-reactions-trail-peter-obis-interview-on-cnn/

By Ikenna Obianeri The Indigenous People of Biafra has declared Tuesday, September 13, as sit-at-home in the South-East. The pro-Biafran group stated that the directive was in solidarity with its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who will be appearing in court on that day. They insisted that there shall be a total lockdown of the whole five states in the South-East for two reasons: Kanu’s court appearance and the visit of the President, Major General Muhammad Buhari to Owerri, Imo State. In a statement on Saturday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said IPOB is simply implementing an existing order to lock down Biafraland any day its leader will appear in court at Abuja. The statement read in part, “The global family and movement of the IPOB wishes to announce to the general public, especially Biafrans that Tuesday September 13, has been declared a day of civil action in the form of Sit-At-Home in Biafraland. “The Tuesday’s civil action is very important for two reasons: First, our leader’s Appeal court hearing that was supposed to be on October 11 has been brought forward to September 13, 2022. “As usual, we call on Biafrans and lovers of freedom to demonstrate our solidarity with our leader who is bearing our yoke in detention for over a year now. “IPOB never issued a new directive to Biafrans, but is simply implementing an existing order to lock down Biafraland any day the our leader will appear in court at Abuja. “It was based on such agreement with our leader that informed the suspension of the initial Mondays sit-at-home declared by IPOB leadership in August of 2021. “It is imperative that our people understand this and go about their daily work and businesses on Monday and get prepared for Tuesday, September 13, 2022 because Biafraland will be locked down completely. “Secondly, it has come to our knowledge that the Imo State Government has decided to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to Oweeri the Imo state capital Tuesday the 13th of September 2022 the very same day the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be appearing in Court. “There shall be a total lock down of the whole of Biafraland on Tuesday the 13th of September 2022. The Imposter Buhari cannot be coming to Imo State while he continues to detain our leader Mazi Nnamdi in the DSS custody. “Kanu must be released unconditionally because he committed no crime known to law. We must warn women groups, the clergy men and women, traditional rulers, president-generals and others who may be contemplating going to Owerri on Tuesday to welcome Buhari. “If you are in support of Buhari detaining our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, then go to Owerri on Tuesday the 13th day of September and welcome the President. “We, therefore, expect all markets, schools, banks, businesses and companies including police stations in Biafra Land to be under lock and key on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 in solidarity with our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. “IPOB members are peaceful. We don’t enforce sit-at-home. Nevertheless, we wouldn’t tolerate people flouting IPOB leadership directives. “Therefore, everyone in Biafran territory must adhere to this civil action in the form of sit-at home on Tuesday. Biafrans are not known to be cowards because we stand without fear before our enemies.” https://punchng.com/kanu-ipob-declares-tuesday-sit-at-home-in-south-east/

Michael Olugbode in Abuja The European Union is committing €39 million towards Nigeria’s electoral process and democracy. The programme tagged ‘EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Phase II’, is funded under the EU’s Neighbourhood Development and International Cooperation Instrument, over a five-year period. This is a re-affirmation of EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s electoral process and would be launched on Monday September 12. According to a statement yesterday by the EU, the programme is aimed at promoting transparent, inclusive and credible elections in Nigeria. The statement added that the overall objective of the EU-SDGN is to foster a functioning pluralistic, inclusive, participatory and representative democracy in Nigeria, insisting that inclusive, participatory and transparent elections were prerequisites for a strong democracy. The statement quoted the Ambassador of the EU to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Samuela Isopi, to have said that: “Ahead of the 2023 general election, Nigeria is at a pivotal moment that allows the country to take important steps to consolidate democracy and strengthen the electoral process. The European Union continues to partner with Nigeria in the on-going reform process with a view to strengthening the capacity to conduct well-managed elections and with ample participation of all Nigerians. For this to happen, all must contribute, from the key institutions to the political parties and candidates, from media to civil society.” According to the statement, the project will be anchored on the priorities identified by the Nigerian government. It also builds on the lessons learned from the implementation of phase I of the programme 2017-2022 and the recommendations of the EU Election Observation Mission made after the 2019 general election as well as those of the EU Election Follow-up Mission to Nigeria. The project, according to the statement, will more specifically focus on six thematic areas of support including improving the quality of electoral administration in Nigeria; strengthening capacities for legislative and judicial reform in compliance with democratic principles and standards; enhancing pluralism, internal democracy and equality of opportunity in the political parties and the political party system. Others are empowering media, including new media to promote fair and ethical coverage of the electoral process and combat hate speech and disinformation; enhancing participation of women, youth and other marginalized groups in the political process; and empowering civil society organisations and relevant agencies to demand greater transparency and accountability in the electoral and decision making process, and promote greater citizens’ participation. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2022/09/10/eu-commits-e39-million-to-electoral-process-democracy-in-nigeria/

By Jim Ochetenwu Presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has deplored what he called mass suffering across the country. Kwankwaso said in Yola on Wednesday that Nigerians have become helpless orphans, lacking even some of the basic needs of life, including household needs and security of life and property. He attributed this to poor governance, which he said must change. Kwankwaso, who was in the Adamawa State capital where he commissioned the state secretariat of the NNPP, said the country urgently needs an alternative political platform and leader to bail it out of ineffective leadership. “Today, Nigerians are like orphans. Everyone is forced to be on his own. NNPP is the alternative platform to change the narrative,” Kwankwaso said. The newly-commissioned NNPP state secretariat is in Yola Town, near the Lamido Adamawa Palace, in Yola South Local Government Area. This makes the NNPP different from most other active political parties in Adamawa State which have their secretariats in the Jimeta axis of the Yola capital city. Daily Post reports that the NNPP is currently the third most prominent political party in Adamawa State after the big two: All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Its governorship candidate is a former deputy governor of the state, Sa’ad Tahir who was a former governorship aspirant under the PDP and later defected to APC, from where he defected earlier this year to the NNPP upon its reinvigoration at the national level by Rabiu Kwnakwaso. https://dailypost.ng/2022/09/07/kwankwaso-deplores-mass-suffering-says-nigerians-now-like-orphans/

According to Lee, in a TikTok video on Tuesday, he said men having long hair long enough to brush off their face or tie into a roll opposes their gender and the Bible. "How you a man and you tying your hair up in a bun,” Lee said in the viral clip. “Men don’t walk around with buns on their head!” Blavity News reported he went further that the Bible says having long hair is “a shame for a man,” and when the crowd reacted with a mixed response, he noted they were part of the “problem.” “That’s the problem, we’re so easily offended,” said the pastor. Lee continued on his discourse, waving brushing hair away from his face and tossing his hair back and forth with scorn. In the clip, the pastor mumble “you’re a devil” as he chided the behaviour of men with long hair. “That ain’t God, that’s worldliness. Men don’t do stuff like that,” Lee said. Viewers’ reactions Meanwhile, viewers reacting on social media were not pleased with the pastor’s sermon as many questioned the increasing number of Black churches. “I feel like there are more important things to preach about,” one user said. “Lord this your servant,” another added with a face palm emoji. “Yep. This is what happens when people take verses of the Bible and remove the context,” one viewer noted. Others mentioned that Jesus himself had long hair. “So according to him, Jesus wasn’t a man? Every conceivable image of Jesus, he has ridiculously long hair,” a viewer tweeted. “Black Jesus ain’t never wanna pull his hair up from ‘round his face tho…?” Another user wrote. “This message is beyond ludicrous,” one viewer wrote. “It sounds like he has an identity problem with himself. Samson had long hair and was told by God not to cut and if he did he would lose his power. He has no right to call someone a devil for having long hair. Some of these preachers smh.”

By Clement Chinedu Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has explained why the Peoples Democratic Party must respect him and other governors in his camp. Wike claimed the governors are the ones campaigning for the party with the projects they have executed in their various states and so deserve to be respected. He made the assertion during the commissioning of the Emohua campus of the Rivers state university on Wednesday. He said those governors referred to as “Children” in the party that are carrying out projects, could be used to campaign in their states. According to Wike “the only states you can see commissioning or flag off of projects are those states according to them that the children are in charge. “If a PDP state is not doing well, don’t think you will be voted for because APC is not doing well. “That’s why the party should respect us and know that we are the ones campaigning for the party because we have what we can use to campaign. “It’s not to abuse people on the pages of a newspaper or go on television and bring people who have some mental problems to defend something they cannot defend”.

By Clement Chinedu The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has declared that the Igbo people built Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. The governor made the claims during a birthday ceremony held in honour of an Imo State-born elder statesman, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, in Owerri, the Imo State capital on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Governor Uzodinma further claimed that some people are trying hard to rewrite history. According to him, “Igbo people built Port Harcourt. Even if it pleases some people now to try to rewrite history. “The Igbos built Port Harcourt.” The governor further noted that Igbo people love Nigeria dearly, as demonstrated by the fact that they are found in every part of the country. “Prominent Igbos like the late Doctor Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu, even General Ike Nwachukwu and a lot of other great men and women were born in the North by their parents who settled there as their home. “Indeed, throughout the 774 local government areas of Nigeria, from Zungeru in the North to Owo in the West and from Akwanga to Ahoada, Igbos are found there in their large numbers. “In most cases, outside the Indigenous population, the largest ethnic groups outside Igbo land are the Igbos,” he added. https://dailypost.ng/2022/09/03/igbos-built-port-harcourt-gov-uzodinma/

By John Akinfehinwa The Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Nanah Opiah has slammed the Academic Staff Union University, (ASUU) over the lingering impasse between the union and the Federal Government. The minister who spoke when he visited the Federal University Lokoja, (FUL), Kogi State on Friday said, ‘the no work no pay policy’ stands. He said the federal government cannot pay lecturers for what they did not work for, adding that, the strike has continued to portray a bad image for the country and has succeeded in causing pain for parents and students. He claimed the federal government has done much on infrastructural development in all higher institutions across the country, charging the Vice-Chancellor of FUL, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi to appeal to lecturers to come back to work. He added that the prolonged stay at home has done more harm than good to the future of Nigerian students. His words “The federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari has done so much, especially, in infrastructural development in our tertiary institution, because anywhere you go, you will see the presence of TETFUND, buildings, vehicles and all manners of institutional assets. “Those who think that lack of infrastructure is one of the reasons they went on strike should think again. Mr Vice Chancellor, let me use this opportunity to appeal to you, to also appeal to our lecturers to come back to work because our children are suffering. “Our country’s image is going lower. Our parents are not happy, and these lecturers are also parents of some of our students. Contrary to what they think, some of us also have our children in Nigerian Universities and they are also suffering. https://dailypost.ng/2022/09/03/only-thieves-demand-money-they-didnt-work-for-education-minister-opiah-slams-ASUU/

By John Chukwu The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, has accused beggars, and street traders from neighbouring states of fueling the insecurity in the nation’s capital. The minister according to a statement issued by the Director of Information and Communication in the FCT, Muhammad Sule, stated this at a meeting with the FCT security committee on Friday. Represented at the meeting by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramotu Tijani-Aliyu, the minister said the committee had concluded plans to launch resuscitated G-7 Security Joint Operation in September. The committee which is headed by Bello is expected to work with community leaders to build an effective vigilante network in the rural communities. The statement read: “The Security Agencies in the FCT have upped their game and people who have no business being here are being sent away. “Some of them come under different guises such as begging, street trading, among others. They usually come from neighbouring states and are causing security breaches here. That is why we have decided to send them out.” The FCT has witnessed several attacks by Boko Haram insurgents and other criminals in recent weeks. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/minister-blames-street-traders-beggars-for-insecurity-in-abuja/

Nearly 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia’s invasion began, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief said on Monday, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported. Valeriy Zaluzhny told a forum that Ukraine’s children needed particular attention “because their fathers have gone to the front and are maybe among the nearly 9,000 heroes who have been killed”. Ukrainian officials have only very rarely given any detail on military losses in nearly six months of war. The last estimate dates back to April when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that up to 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and 10,000 injured. https://www.channelstv.com/2022/08/22/nearly-9000-ukrainian-soldiers-killed-says-top-commander/
