Travel / Re: Nigerians have good jobs in UK (enough Of Sad Stories) by LadyDee1(f): 12:26pm On Aug 13, 2012
somebody:

Now, listen carefully so you learn something new. The UK salaries are available on the internet - there is nothing hidden. In Nigeria, most people lie about your salaries and no one can verify. I can tell you for certain that the prime minister earns £142,500 because everything is standarised (to an extent) and transparent. So if I tell you I am a lawyer with 4 - 5 years experience, you should be able to gauge my salary band. Taxation too is transparent - well except you are a contractor so you know how much the person gets after tax and NI.

Now, back to the reality. Engineering graduates will earn on average £26,000 fresh from university with oil & gas jobs being higher. Just a quick look at Exxon Mobil's website suggests thatthey will pay their graduates £35,000 plus £4,000 relocation allowance in addition to their first month's rent= £40,000+ pa. Shell graduate jobs are being advertised as £32,500 to £37,500. Accenture is advertising graduate jobs at £31,500pa + £10,000 sign on bonus = £41,500 pa. I got all these information from their respective websites. There is no hanky panky, no need to hide such info.

Now for an investment bank which is known for its ridiculously high salaries - Graduates are offered a basic salary of £45,000, sign on bonus of £5,000 to £7,000 (depending on bank), year end bonus of up to 75% of your base salary (c.£30,000 -not everybody will get this, some will get £20,000 depending on your performance). In total that is £80,000 if you include sign on bonuses- Just google investment banking analyst salaries and see for yourself. You have some forums just like this dedicated to young people in investment banking - on there they compare their salaries, bonuses. All the info is easily verifiable.

If you stay on and you get promoted to an Associate at an Investment Bank which is after 3 years of joining (again transparent system depending on who you ask), you get a £20,000 bonus that is separate from your salary and bonus. By the time you get to this level, you are easily on £75,000 basic salary and if you add everything up, they have earned more than £100,000 so 25 year olds get this sort of salaries easily.

The question to ask is how many Nigerians get these sort of jobs - NOT MANY but are there some Nigerians earning this sort of salaries - ABSOLUTELY YES.

I hope you have managed to learn a thing or two.

'Listen here and let me teach you a thing or two?'
Do you think your talking to a 2 year old or a JJC?
Talk to me with a little respect as i have others and I will reciprocate...
For the simple fact you came at me with hostility and tried, let me reiterate 'attempted' to demean my statement with your little 'google search' composed sermon you posted there, has made me ponder on your ability to read, digest, and understand what i have been saying previously.

Did you not see what i said in my previous posts regarding my awareness of investment bankers and their salaries?
Obviously not, hence why what you just spontaneously regurgitated will be categorized as null and void from a non factor.

queensmith: Even with a 1st Class degree in Physics from Oxford University and parents that own a clothing factory in tottenham hale. 76k starting salary is far fetched.

and no just because I haven't seen this job before doesn't mean it's non existent. . . .it just means there is a high probability that this is all gassss and aiiiir grin grin grin

and yes, IB does put a hole in my argument, as does doctors and those working at clifford chance (and alot of Nigerians do!) it's still pretty far fetched. I believe someone in that pay bracket (for an entry level role) will at least hold an MBA or a PHD.

I agree with you... but, never say never.. I have never known or heard of a graduate retain such a payscale without as you said above further studies.. If they had a Phd/MBA that payscale will appear more attainable in a certain sector of UK companies...
However, I do know of graduates who enter Investment banking and are not far off that pyscale, but of course without a huge sacrifice... They work round the clock.... People will bradcast how amazing their pay is but the cost of it will remain 'mute'..

The bolded part of the first post gives the impression that you don't think it happens.

I apologise if that was your impression, i was trying to state, even if it does happen (of which I am aware it does) its very rare for it to happen in particular with a foreigner (unfortunate as it may be).... Its the reason for the points system being put in place to filter out the cream of the crop and the 'chaff'.

Where is your evidence that people don't earn £70k fresh from University or are we just supposed to take your word for it? undecided

It's quite presumptuous to claim something doesn't happen simply because you don't know someone it's happened to.

Im not saying it doesnt happen, what im saying is you must be pretty extra ordinary in the Brits eyes to achieve such a payscale at Graduate level...
RedBrick University among the TOP 5 at least
1st Class and Other Exceptional/distinguished Achievements made at Univesity and even College/A-level stage
Family background (yes i said it), Your family background must be pretty decent by that i mean you came from a Middle class family... This particular point is magnified in particular if you want to be a 'somebody' in the British Law Sector....

Claus: I think some people have completely missed the point of this thread.

I haven't done any meaningful research, but I would guess that a majority of Nigerians in the U.K. are still struggling. For the bulk of them it's either they haven't got the best education or they are not yet legally settled, and so they can't compete with the talent on the ground.

However, the thread is really just trying to say there is another side to the Nigerians in diaspora story. I personally know a lot of Nigerians that are well placed professionally. Admittedly, a lot of them are from middle class families. There are some though who are just exceptionally talented and driven and didn't necessarily come from wealthy backgrounds.

In my career, I've worked for one of the big 4 accountancy firms and also an American investment bank (I regretted that one). While there, just by looking on the firm's intranet, I came across a good number of Nigerians (and other Africans), both in our London offices and across the pond in the U.S.

The value to be derived from a thread like this is the encouragement that there are real life success stories abroad, but more importantly, as Zechy09 has tried to do with his advice about networking, to show people some practical and realistic actions they can take to achieve that success.

There is no value in coming here to tell lies. If you're a Nigerian living in the U.K., you're obviously not going to find the success stories we're talking about in Peckham. It's like saying there are successful people in Lagos and someone accuses you of lying because of the endemic poverty in Ajegunle.

Exactly...

Family / Re: by LadyDee1(f): 3:58pm On Aug 08, 2012
Love this topic!! Well overdue...

I am a huge Daddys girl, my dad was educated from GCSE level to MPhil level in the UK and the same with my mother.
I noticed a huge difference in my parents style of upbringing and always thought my folks were a lil weird...
ThankGod today i truly congratulate them on what they have done and been able to achieve.
My dad is a typical Igbo man but does not have the typical igbos mans views on things i'd say his alot more westernised in that respect...
We grew up with our dad taking us everywhere and anywhere you could think off... He was truly a real hands on dad, he took us to amusement parks, sports day, circus's, he taught us how to swim at very young ages.
As we all grew up (we are 3 girls only) we noticed our peers may not have had the priviledge of such, we grew up thinking this was the 'norm' for your dad to be the way our own dad was.
We had to have an opinion and set our own trends as he liked to put it, he would bring up random issues and let the whole family discuss/debate their viewpoints... My dad was always the mediator.. He always made sure everyone had their turn and voiced their opinions...
Timidity is no FRIEND in our house....We all learnt that fast

My dad detested us as kids watching others eating or putting your eye on someone elses belongings that we may hve really wanted... Cane would immediatly come out if he ever caught us.. He saw it as we would grow up alway envying others and desiring what others had...
Instead he brought us up with the mindset of what we as individuals would desire and how we would achieve it and work on that...
None of us girls have time to be comparing because we have our own dreams we are all chasing... Sitting around comparing and contrasting with others is a waste, but naturally there is healthy competition between the 3 of us as sisters... We Support each other...

He never ever mentioned NOT having a Son and none of us have ever felt belittled by that if anything he trained us to be Strong minded, independant, self respecting young ladies with high self confidence.. It was drilled into us all from a tender age to respect yourself and hold yourself high.. if you respect yourself others will do the same...
Whispering about others and him hearing it, he always had an awkward tactic... He would wait for everyone to be together and expose the secret in a very cunning and innocent manner and go as far as to say who told him...
All of this was to teach us to say the truth out without fear and with confidence.. Always say the good, bad or the ugly when necessary and it concerned your loved ones.. Dont watch evil and ignore it or pretend you dont see it.

All 3 of us have grown, all gone to university, graduated and work in our fields..
My youngest sister is his right hand... Even as grown as she is (22 years old) when he leaves back to Abuja where he is based now, it still hits her the hardest, they discuss everything and he wants to know everything, if he feels you holding back (his sixth sense) trust and believe he will be on you till it comes out..
A nosy dad he may be, but he has always taken interest in what we are all doing and wants to give his own support to encourage us to reach further than he has in life...

My perception and experience on typical Nigerian parents in particular fathers are completly different to what i know, and i truly believe this has had a devastating effect on the adults of today... Its a vicious cycle...
The majority I have witnessed are not 'hands on' and do not believe its there duty... So whos duty is it?
They dont feel the need in taking a genuine interest in their daughters life and education... its only to be 1st class...
Saying it and actually supporting them to get there are 2 different things...

My dad has helped alot of people whos kids come to the UK for university... I remember a young lady who is half hausa half yoruba.. She was an only child from her mother but had loads of siblings from her fathers other 'concubines'..
During her school holidays since she had no family in the UK, we accomodated her, this went on until she graduated..
At times she was uncomfortable when we had our discussions, meals together and just general gist with our dad. My Dad always questioned to see how she had settled in, how she found the place she lived, if her course gave her difficulties, she was always very wary and taken aback.
She one day confided in my mother when questioned about it and said shes not used to such questions and our family lifestyle.
Her father just paid her school fees and gave her money for her feeding and that w ;Das it...
He never knew where she lived or ever asked, he didnt even know what course she was studying.
She saw this as the typical Nigerian Fathers way...

Today my fiancee is never afraid to say he envys my upbringing because of the father I have,he truly wants to follow his way with his own kids one day.
I have always put my dad on a pedastool higher than my hand can reach, tho he is humn and makes his own mistakes.
But he along with my mother are role models that cant be touched in my eyes...

Parents really dont understand the difference they can make in doing little things to bring up their childrens confidence, and unfortunatly alot of fathers prefer to pass the buck and responsibility onto the mothers..
The way they speak in front of their children, certain actions made in front of kids... all have a massive impact... Kids are like sponges, they absorb alot at certain ages and if care is not taken absorb the wrong things and negative views and morals...

Yes sisi, I am fully aware of fresh produce fom Local farms. I temporarily live in cambridge, and its all over the place. However, you still cannot source out live cattle and have it slaughtered at your own beck and call..
There are 'slaughterhouses' for this procedure, it is an EU law... Laws in the US are slightly different, so theres more flexibility...

buzugee: if you are that much vested in eating goat meat you may need an exorcism. the system in the uk is set-up in a sanitized way so that everything you need is available at the numerous supermarkets that dot the land. getting together with 3 other people to seek out whole goats is not the norm over there. in fact its abnormal. this shows that you have an unnatural affinity for that goat meat. like i said, yall may need some kind of exorcism.

My thoughts exactly, that NEVER happens in the UK....
However, yet again I have seen this happen in the USA, where you can actually go to certain areas (like farms) and buy a goat to be slaughterered.....

Fashion / Re: More About Brazilian Hair And Virgin Natural Hair by LadyDee1(f): 2:17am On Jan 29, 2011
Virgin hair is cutically aligned hair in which all cuticals are intact, the hair has not been processed in any way shape or form to achieve it's texture. It only comes in black and dark browns because it's not dyed. Once virgin hair is dyed it's no longer classified as Virgin hair

Remy hair is virgin hair that has been chemically or steam processed to achieve the curl pattern or texture desired, it is also dyed to achieve any colour you desire. However, the cuticles are still intact, the quality has been compromised hence some damage has been done to the hair when dyed and chemically processed.
It is still good hair if processed well and can still be used on multiple ocassions but Virgin hair is the highest grade of hair and lasts much longer than remy hair if well taken care of.

Remy hair does not come from the floor or from left over bundles.

BSS hair is fallen hair from combs and from the floor in salons, that is what is used for normal beauty supply store hair that e.g. Sensational premium now and premium plus is fallen hair, the citified are not in the same direction the hair is dyed and processed to look pretty but it tangles after some time.

That's the difference.

Trust me I know! I'm experienced in the grades of hair and what virgin and remy hair look like,I'm a wholesaler in the UK but distribute to people in Abuja mainly.

Go and do your proper research on what virgin hair is and what remy hair is, there is a HUGE difference between Virgin hair, Remy hair and BSS  hair.

Remy hair can still bs good quality hair if processed properly

You also contradicted  yourself by saying virgin hair is not processed which is right but you process your Brazilian hair? That means it's not virgin!!! angry

Travelista:

You're typing jazz and you know it. You're talking about African 'humanity' and 'shame'? The same 'humanity' and 'shame' that enlists child soldiers, embarks on unrepentant genocides and loots federal coffers? Just think about what you're saying. If you really think African women aren't sleeping around except for necessity, then you are terribly naive. The sex trade isn't an 'African issue'; it's a global one and there are millions of men and women that are legitimate victims of unscrupulous people. On the other hand, there are people that have lower moral standards that see turning tricks as any other job and are happy to ply their trade.

Where I am right now, I can name two women that are well-known restaurateurs that were sleeping with the same man; that same man was respected in his own right and lavished gifts on them (and other thirsty birds). The story only broke because the man recently died of HIV; now, tell me: what forced these married women to spread their legs for an outsider? Was it because their light was about to be disconnected? Or they needed money for medical treatment? No, they were loose and wanted the baubles they could have easily purchased themselves. Hookers come in many forms but that doesn't mean they are all victims. Visit a Nigerian university; I'm sure you'll find girls and boys that sleep around because they like the fast cash.

Abeg Travelista, no mind these people deceiving themselves, their either living in a enclosed bubble or walking around plain BLIND!
Why is it that when people have walked into something (they most of the time see coming) they will CRY victim when the poo hits the Fan!

I blame some womans stupidity and lack of common sense (indeed its not soo common),
Most of the time these woman even know what they are about to walk into but still CHOOSE to walk straight into it thinking ANYTHING is better than Nigeria!!
Its when reality has given them one nasty blow they realise its not so great afterall and claim they are victims of trafficking and prostitution etc,
