Crime › Re: 419ers Are Spoiling Naija's Image Globally. Wetin We Go Do? by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 7:35pm On Feb 07, 2011
419 is definitely a blight on Nigeria to the point that whenever I encounter a foreigner on business matters, they are very suspicious when it comes to the commercials.

I think as Nigerians, we and the media fail to address the issue in its proper perspective. 419 is a symptom of a much bigger problem which is known as FEDERAL CHARACTER. clearly a dubious term used to classify what a Nigerian should be. in reality it is known as CORRUPTION. This is the root of all ills in Nigeria from 419 to Child-labour, Malaria (Nigeria has the highest mortality rates for children under 5 in Africa), P.rostitution, R.ape, etc, everything has its root in CORRUPTION. if we can deal with this Evil permanently, 419 will turn on its head when intelligent youth can divert their energies into achieving something positive

OMG! Tarwka bay was once a place of cool fun with peace and quiet. the only girls trying to show skin were very posh girls from decent homes. i find it hard to believe the story but i think it is true. I have heard of prostitution at its peak sometime in 2005. i was there last in 2000. I think some dude Tazran boats gave rides for N1,000 bucks then. (Only bigger boys could afford N1,000 then)

R.ape is definitely a trait of Nigerian Soldiers (they gave birth to quite a number of Nigerian/Liberians when ECOMOG went there)

@150+ Million Nigerians, we have been playing CHANCE with our future since the first Democratic dispensation since the 2nd Republic.

Everyone on this thread (young and old) cannot deny the facts that for a nation blessed with numerous opportunities (for Global Greatness), we have fallen short of our own expectations talk-less of international expectations. We prefer to see single successful events as the badge of Greatness when smaller and younger nations have long reached better destinations in their Democratic Journey. rather than examine our realization, make amends by correcting our deficiencies, we choose to compare ourselves to troubled African nations and beat our chests that we are not like them.

I recall the jubilation in the Austere days of Shagari when Buhari took the reigns and we thought to ourselves, Let us Give him a Chance>>

There were also jubilation when IBB snuck in while Buhari was away; tired of WAI, we said, Let us Give him a Chance he brought SAP (while utilizing the Ways and Means Advances to the hilt) and we cried for a savior

No one liked ABACAHA but when he threw down his military uniform and Title of Military Head of State, he became the consensus candidate of all parties for the President of Nigeria. (The very politicians you see today making claims of bringing Democracy to Nigeria all begged Abacha to become President. Well thank providence (or was it the CIA) for smiling on Nigeria when Abacha passed on a promise for a better Nigeria loomed.

Enter OBJ (our very own Nelson Mandela) God mandated him to rule Nigeria and we all cried tears of joy for our new savior, we gave him a chance and he resurrected Ajaokuta Steel Project and killed it among many other deeds that left Nigeria begging for another savior.

Yaradua was a Teacher of Credible mien and humble character (don't we all just love those qualities), he was slow -we saw it as being cautious and especially good for keeping the greedy politicians at bay, he promised us Eldorado and showed us his 7-point Agenda. Alas! our new saviour passed on and GEJ slipped in by a dint of Political Confusion, Constitutional Lacuna, Sycophantic lobbying and the Divine Will of God shocked (and advise from the US).

But we have been through over 50 years of GIVING CHANCE and have survived, so why not GIVE GEJ A CHANCE we have not died yet from giving chances now have we? after all by 2015 we will know if GEJ was worth the CHANCE we gave him won't we?

You cannot Judge a Book by its Cover, you must read it thoroughly and make a sound judgment. I am sure the life of Jonathan from his days as deputy till date is a book for all to see. When you are through reading it. decide if you want to give GEJ a CHANCE wink

Is Bakare a Political Liability riding on the goodwill of Buhari and the goodwill of the populace who see him as a upright, truthful and sincere fire brand preacher. Do you think Christians can vote en-bloc to support this two straight couples.
Unfortunately a good deal of Nigerian Christians have been able to cleanly delineated Politics from Religion (meanwhile Religion and Politics are bedmates). A Christian Vote or Muslim Vote is something any Powerful party will fear in an election, sadly it will never happen in Nigeria. Christians simply do not vote because of Godly injunctions, they vote for their own personal reasons sad

@tensor the issue is heavily weighted in sentiments and for a good reason; This is a Court of Public Opinion (which weighs poorly on Lamido's Government). Lamido may institute legal actions just as some governors did to some Media houses (rather than raiding their offices and locking them up). No one is debating Mubarak's legality on the seat of Government, Public Opinion is just heavily weighted against him. If Lamido had taken teh Legal route, I am fairly certain (it is within his means anyway) he would have won a judgment in his favor and proceed to deal with the lad without any Public Sentiments railing him day and night. Unfortunately when a person in such position feels offended, there is a trailer load of MOPOLS to send to beat the shizzle out of a fast-talking nigguh

I am just wondering what kind of software will detect multiple registrations when the storage medium for the voters registration is a world-class relational database. with a few queries it will expose duplicates, sometimes I feel the Nigerian populace is easy to deceive because they are too lazy to THINK and accept anything hook line and sinker.

That is why the DDC Machines were bought in the 1st place - BIOMETRICS!!! it ensures that there will never be duplicates in the first place

GEJ will win the election, no doubt but I see a very dark four years for nigeria if nothing
Serious is done about the various security issues sweeping the country.
We have MEND, doing whatever it is they do to prove their point
NDLF bombing nigeria's resources with reckless abandon
Boko Haram I honestly don't see their point but they claim to have one and they are
doing their best to prove it
The crisis in Jos has almost reached its crescendo
Kidnapping is at its all time high in the country
And numerous other security issues. To be honest OBJ's regime was even better when it came to national security.
Are we supposed to be getting worse instead of improving?
Is any of the political candidates strong enough to handle these issues, I don't think so.
Its only God that can save Nigeria because our elected officials follow the same trend, none performance or if we are lucky minimal performance
With all this security issues, one day the civilian government will not be able to handle it. And God forbid a military takeover.
Take heart, what is the worst that can happen. GEJ will dedicate $5 billion to make Special Advisers of every kingpin Kidnapper, Bookoh Haramist, MENDer and NDLFer . we will all be safe, what are you worried about Bianca will be promoted to Super-Special Adviser on 1st Lady Education Matters grin

Politics › Iraqi Prime Minister Cuts Salary In Half (i Dare Our Senators To Do The Same) by lagerwhenindoubt(op): 12:09am On Feb 06, 2011
Amid Egypt-inspired unrest, Iraqi prime minister cuts salary in half

Baghdad (CNN) -- Amid growing unrest about poor public services and water shortages, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Friday agreed to cut his salary in half.

Protesters around Iraq have said recent popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia inspired their weeklong demonstrations for improvements in government services and their quality of life.

Thousands have rallied since Sunday across the country, railing against rampant poverty, a 45% national unemployment rate and shortages of food, electricity and water, including several hundred in three different parts of Baghdad on Friday.

Al-Maliki said those concerns prompted his decision to axe his salary, which he said would "help reduce the differences in the living standards for different classes."

"Fifty percent of my monthly salary as prime minister will be reduced and returned to the government's treasury starting from the current month, as a contribution from me to reduce the difference in the salaries of the state officials," al-Maliki said in a statement released by his office and posted on his official website.

On al-Mutanabi Street in central Baghdad, nearly 200 people gathered Friday morning to show solidarity with those rallying against their governments elsewhere in the Arab world and voice domestic concerns.

Some shouted in support of "democracy and peace" in Egypt and Tunisia, and others cried, "Governments fall with the voice of righteousness" and "Don't prevent us from expressing. We demand change!" Marchers also carried banners saying, "Baghdad will not be Kandahar," referring to the recent crackdown by the Iraqi government on liquor sales.

"We stand in solidarity with the Egyptian people and their uprising in order to achieve their freedom and their independence from the dictatorship," protester Abdullah al-Rikabi told CNN. "We have not seen any changes in the past eight years, and we demand better basic services."

In Husseinya, a Shiite majority neighborhood in northern Baghdad, hundreds more demonstrators demanded improvements in electricity and water service. "We don't have a government but only a corrupted government!" some shouted.

These demonstrations began right after Friday services in neighborhood mosques.

"Iraq has suffered a big deal under the tyranny of (deposed dictator) Saddam (Hussein), and it's still suffering from bad basic services, food and other things," protester Bassam Abdulrazaq said.

Wiam Saber said "Iraqi people are fed up with things in Iraq," but the recent events elsewhere in the Arab world stirred them to publicly voice their concerns through demonstrations.

"The things that happened in Egypt and Tunisia was kind a motivation for us, so we started this just to let them know that we are not going to be silent, and we will talk about all the horrible things that happen in Iraq," he said.

Christianity Etc › Re: Why Tithes Are Important by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 11:54pm On Feb 05, 2011
I thought this issue was trashed outright and the Pastors lost tongue

Tithing is part of the OT Law and has Scriptural basis from Leviticus 27:30 "'A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD." and Malachi 3:9 says, "You are under a curse; the whole nation of you, because you are robbing me." such were the tensed-up days of Scriptural REPO Men grin

However Tithers!! Jesus Christ did not go crawl up Shiit creek and die for you just so you will still be bound by LAW for Galatians 3:13 says "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

OT Law covered aspects of the Jews life, their personal and national relationship with God as well as their relationship as an individual to civil authority. The civil law is still in affect today. But the law concerning a True Christian's relationship with God underwent a change in Hebrew 7:12 which says "For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law." If you take a look at civil laws today, you can clearly see that they have their roots in the OT Law.

The Law of Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:2 which says Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ) has all the components of the moral law of the Old Testament but none of the ceremonial law (Tithing, circumcision, ceremonial washing, Saturday worship, etc.). I am not discounting other ceremonial practices such as communion, water baptism but these are not requirements to maintain a proper relationship. These are requirements to maintain a proper perspective of what Christ has done. While in the old law circumcision or tithing were mandatory or else , (you know the stories) by trying to or actually fulfilling OT law today, you have put your salvation in jeopardy. as it clearly states in Galatians 5:1-4
1: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
2: Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.
3: Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
4: You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

I am no theologian or priest or pastor, just a voracious consumer of knowledge seeking Wisdom and Understanding. It is simple enough to understand that Tithing is just for show if you wish to be old fashioned and follow OT Law by doing so you have basically insulted the Death and Resurrection of Christ submitting yourself to LAW and damning yourself from God's Grace. I pray your pastor never leads you to damnation in Jesus Name. AMEN
