I know how you feel and sympathize with you. Starcomms has it's own issues as well but I guess are the best of all the devils. The problem with Nigeria is that we do not have the agencies to police these guys effectively. In the United States, I used Road Runner which was about 50 times as fast as my Starcomms EVDO. If my internet ever was down, I was sure to be compensated for at least 1-1/2 times of the lost usage. And they were sure to keep you updated by telephone about the outage and do whatever it taked to make you feel better.

If people operated the way that they do in Nigeria, their CEOs and other top directors will be arrested and locked up for Racketeering. Racketeering is exactly what is happening when people pay for a product and they are not delivered. These people act like they are doing us favours by providing service that we pay for. And of course, they are big enough to bribe top officials to look the other way. Nigerians are complacent and used to being lied to constantly while we accept this as the status quo.

Why do i say so. You do not need too much power in the north. The real problem of NEPA comes from the south. If you do this. most northern state would have 24 X 7 electricity.

They need little energy. Having a grid system that links them with south create problem for them. But if they are standalone. The northern state can manage it well. they require little energy . But places in the south. kick them off the grid and the north would have 24hrs supply.

state have to own thier own network and connect to the national grid.

Even look NEPA is not making money, this way NEPA makes money, since they are seller of energy. They sell energy to state and the state now sell the energy to you.

If NEPA sell to state , they get paid, if the state sell to people it is not NEPA business if they get pay. NEPA would have money all the time , and they can build more generating station.

let me exmple.

If NEPA hand over the transmission and distribution today. They sell energy to state say lagos for 2 billion naira. They get paid and And lagos sell the energy to you.

Now NEPA have 2 billion. It has less over head to take care of. And would have so much money in its bank to build generating station because the more generating station NEPA built the more money it makes.

This reduce the number of staff in lagos. And one think about electricity is that it stop transfer of staffs from state to state. Which is not good in engineering. If i troubleshoot a system for many years. It would take you less than 10 minute if it break down to restore. but if you move staff around it takes 20 times the times to trouble shoot.

The staff can now work for the state board and they can decide to change board. To the state which pays more for thier skills.

another thing about this is state can sell power too. So a state like Niger, adamawa, pleteau, kogi, benue state and others which have no other revenue apart from the federal govt can now start selling energy to other state that needs it. Like lagos.

Look a state like bauchi state which makes sugar cane can use the molasis recycle to generate electricity and now resell to lagos or ogun state.

Look if i am minister of energy, i go resolve the problem.

You are obviously as naive as I was before returning to Nigeria. Before you suggest to anyone about being a Minister, you must first understand how things work. You clearly do not understand the Politics in Nigeria. I will recommend that you do some studying of the situation so you can be better educated.

Nigeria's progress is being stifled by a few who have become enormously wealthy as a result. Nigeria should be on the level of Singapore, or at least Malaysia by now, if it wasn't for the clique that wants to Lord over other Nigerians by keeping them poor. Do you think Nigeria lacks the intellectual capability to resolve power issues? I personally doubt that. As a matter of fact, the President recently proclaimed that our power problems are because of the generator lobby. They do not want things to work.

It is very typical of the average Nigerian mentality, not to care about Nation or other people as long as they are personally wealthy. Nigeria lacks a national brand, and people rarely care about the well being of the Nation. Everyone's concern is about what they can get from the nation, and not what they can do for her. Here you are, advocating to be a power minister, only because you are an Electrical Engineer. If you had been properly connected, some uneducated politician may have given you the position for that reason only. But do you really qualify? Do you even understand the logistics involved? Judging from what you have posted, it is obvious that you are oblivious of what you are talking about.

I hope you do not feel offended, but Nation building requires more than the whims of someone who thinks he can. A few newspaper tidbits about National grids, transmission stations and sub-stations hardly qualifies a person to handle a complex Nation. The politics of negotiating the locations of power stations, transmission buffers, Land owner infringements, safety and others are just a little part of the factors relating to building a National grid. Breakage and re-routing at the spur of the moment will probably overwhelm you. And then, Nigeria will experience another failed project after investing billions into it.

You should think for a moment about how many wealthy Nigerians acquired their wealth. Then you will realize that it was mostly through theft, embezzlement, bribes, or anti-competitive activities. Most of our problems in Nigeria can be nullified if only we had a good legal structure. A good legal structure will have well trained enforcement officers who will be free to do their jobs without political obstruction or interference. Our Judges will see all men as equals without bowing to the so many prima-donnas. Ribadu raised he par, and what happned to him? This is Nigeria for you.

With our people being so complacent and submissive, there will never be a change. Until the people realize what is at stake, and mobilize to clean out corruption and anti-competitive activities, nothing will change in Nigeria. Nigerians have been bamboozled and bullied by the Military for too long to understand what democracy is really about. Civilians who succeeded economically in the past had to be Military whores, and people generally were happy to pick-up the crumbs that got thrown their way.

If the current President really wants to change Nigeria's power situation, then he should indeed be ready to make many powerful enemies. I will advise him to strategize by making the transition as open as possible by continuous publications about the goals and progress of his plans. This will win the hearts of the people and they will feel a sense of being a part of Nigeria. With open information, the people will become wiser and very protective of the President. However, it is unfortunate that we continue to have policies of secrets. This will in-turn fuel rumours and innuendos. And the people will continue to distrust government.

I doubt if our current crop of politicians really understand the concept of government. Government isn't automatic. Government is formed to serve the people and make things more amicable for the society to interact. This is then supported by what used to be voluntary contributions by the people, which is now known as taxation. If the government isn't performing for the people and demand taxes from same, then this constitutes robbery. Nigerians have been continuous victims of robbery via a contitution that has not succeeded in performing it's duty to protect and harmonize society.

Now back to the subject that is at hand: Former Governor Tinubu created the Egbin Power Station to deliver power to Lagos. This would have alleviated a lot of the problems of Lagos, except that the federal government intervened and said that the stations power has to go into the National grid. Judging from the statement made by the Minister who was over Power (A Lady, can't remember her name), she believes that Lagos should first supply Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto before it can then get back whatever is left. She believes that power should be shared the way that they share looted funds from the government. This is an ideal example of bad policies by unqualified leaders. She fails to understand that by transmitting power from Lagos to Sokoto or Kano, 2/3 of the power will be lost in transmission. She is oblivious that useful power should supply immediate surroundings first and the extra may then be transmitted to the grid. In industrialized nations, she would have been laughed at as a joke.

In most countries outside Nigeria, knowledge is power. However, the par for power in Nigeria seems to lie in the crookedness and wickedness of the heart and nature. We seek to cure the symptoms instead of seeking the ailment. The issue of power in Nigeria is only one of the outputs or results of a decadent society. There are many more like this and the story can be told by every Nigerian. We should focus on developing a paradigm that will rid us of politicians who hate intellects. This paradigm needs to redefine what it means to be a Nigerian. Public executions of the corrupt may help to accelerate this paradigm shift. But we need to do something fast, our we should expect chaos in the very near future.

Power problems may only be a very visible acknowledgment of our decadence. But for Nigeria to resolve this issue, it must also address the societal malfeasance that would allow a few men to sabotage a country of over 140 million people

And how do lagos temporary solve its NEPA problem.

Here is the solution. I am an electrical engineer. The first thing to do is to have 2 source of supply. which is NEPA and the IPP. Lagos and other state should own the transmission lines and distribution lines in their state. The federal govt should hand over this transmission and distribution lines to state. All the federal govt needs to do is generate and sell the energy to the state. And the state deal with the consumer of energy. I dont have the time today. to explain what i would do if i am minister of energy.

I would remove federal govt from transmission and distribution and state would own it. While NEPA becomes only a generator and seller of energy. They would also have interstate transmission lines. but each state would have its on energy board. Like example the Lagos state electricity power authority [LEPA] Or Delta state electricity power authority [DEPA] or Bauchi electricity power authority [BEPA], Kwara state electricity power authority [KEPA], Cross river electricity power authority[ CEPA] , RIver state electricity power authority [REPA] etc, . Their task include to transmit, generate, distribute electricity with thier state. This is the way it is done over here and in the USA.

The system we operate which is from britain is not the best. What to do is not for the internet.

It will take Legislation to do what you suggest. Federal Government does not want the states to be independent. We have too many self-serving Nigerian leaders who are afraid of any Southern state getting too further ahead than other parts of Nigeria. These people know that Lagos will be unstoppable if it had the Electric power to supply Industrial growth. They will rather hold back Lagos, to give themselves a chance to play catch-up with it.

We have unreliable power supply because certain political giants in Nigeria benefit from the situation. Do you think Oil and Gas companies will survive selling fuels only for Automobiles and Trucks? Do you think Generator importers will still make a living only supplying generators to remote areas? Within the Oil and Generator conglomerates, you will find the saboteurs of Nigeria, and the reason why the sleeping giant stays asleep.

Norway is a very Oil rich country, yet the future of Norway's power supply does not rely on it's oil and gas fields. Nigeria meanwhile, has very large gas deposits that are now being targeted for supply of power. Industrialization in Nigeria has not begun yet, but we are coming up with various figures on our power needs merely based on today's usage.

We have to remember that South Africa was built on a solid foundation, and were good at futures projections. However, her growth has exceeded those projections and it's power grid now needs more injection. South Africa should be a model for what to expect from Nigerian Industrialization.

Anyone who drives along Bar Beach or any of the coastal beaches in Nigeria will notice the abundance of 3 things on the typical day. These are; Wind, Sun, and waves. Gas powered plants could directly drive turbines or heat up water, which then drives turbines. The process requires equipment that have parts that need servicing more frequently than some other technologies.

Wind Turbines nowadays produce up to 7 Megawatts of power each, and Wave technology has been advanced to a stage where many European countries are adopting it in their power strategies. Solar farms are a big business in the United States and the government gives huge grants to businesses that pursue this technology to provide power. Within the next 2 years, the costs of producing Solar power will be highly reduced because of the emergence of more manufacturers of the parts that drive this process. It is also obvious that when you burn fossil fuels, you will also have a high amount of particulate emissions.

My Question is: What is wrong with our leaders? Why are we allowing Oyimbo to sell us their outdated technologies and continue to proliferate a culture of backwardness in Africa? Are we expected to stay behind in all things? At what point will we begin to try to catchup?

In a way, one can look at the feasibility of Gas fueled plants in terms of the relatively low cost of gas in Nigeria, but have we truly analyzed all the costs? What about the emissions? What about the cost of developing the gas plants that will have to refine the gas for use in the power plants? What about the costs and maintenance of the pipelines to run gas to the power plants?

Nigeria needs to develop a culture of doing complete Life Cycles Cost Analysis of any project that is supposedly for the benefit of the people.

Life Cycle Costs Analysis determines the real costs of these projects through their useful lives or major rehabilitation. Historical probability costs should be included, such as the potential of the pipelines being disrupted. Comparable technology Cost/Benefit factors need to be considered as well.

Norway, as well as most European/American governments never embark on projects without being thorough in their evaluations. It is unfortunate that Nigerians just fall prey to unscrupulous foreign companies who present loads of paper to confuse and fool government officials who are not willing to do the work to read through and understand possibilities. However, you will be surprised to find that in these European and American agencies, there is a large pool of Nigerians and Africans working to build and set policies. The greed and corruption in Nigeria allows a few unread/unqualified looters to determine strategic positions that will affect the future of many Nigerians.

Until there is a freedom of Information act that enables private citizens to act as watchdogs for Nigeria, we shall continue to be flooded with outdated and unreasonable solutions to our issues. We should all make it a matter of principle to become activists in securing the future of Nigeria. We should embark on making sure that we have the right to know what the government intends to feed us for our collective futures. it is only logical that our policies and decisions should mirror those of the countries of the people feeding us our future technologies.

Yes you will need Engineering drawings, at least for the foundation. Prior to the Engineering drawings, a soil test will have to be done to determine what type of foundation will be required on your site. This foundation will also have to be designed to structurally hold the live and dead weights of the building.

Most common problems in Nigeria that leads to buildings collapsing is when unscrupulous landlords and extra floors to buildings that did not have their foundations foundations designed to carry the weight. I will suggest that you consult with a reputable Engineer.

It seems like there is a misconception about the USA. People there are polite to each other and don't talk trash to any stranger like in Nigeria. After that Nigerians will learn to respect the gun as they go to a few funerals and understand it's power. Y'all shouldn't be too scared. I really get tired of the mind games that these professional politicians play on Nigerians. They employ a few stalwarts to get out there and fool (at least attempt to) the people. When will Nigeria mature and start approaching things from a sense of achievements instead of bloodying everything with tribalism. This guy has had many chances to prove himself and has failed. Why are the Igbos not talking about people like Pat Utomi? Why are we trying to recycle failure? A former Minister of Transportation who's leadership worsened Nigerian roadways and caused many to die needlessly is being thrown at us. Are these people real or retarded?

I will assume that any sensible person who tries to operate a business in Nigeria will consider the Nigerian factor. Hopefully, you will not assume that I am naive enough to preclude that. It is one thing to recognize the existence of something, it is another thing to know its limit, how to tackle it if it happens, as well as preventive/protective measures. Islam makes us know that evil forces like juju etc exist, and it unveils the deception behind it. In fact, special Qur'anic chapters(Chapters 113-114) were revealed on the subject of this evil forces among mankind and jinns.

So a good Muslim will not deny the existence of juju and other evil forces, but what is forbidden is to use/consult it. And if it is cast on a Muslim, there are Islamic procedures to exorcise the afflicted. Also, a Muslim is not expected to fear juju, rather, fortify himself against such through prayers and worship.

Mind you, anything got by way of juju, whether seemingly good(like job) or obviously bad(like making another person run mad), is evil. The end does not justify the means here.

Excellent and intelligent statements of facts!!!! He who dabbles in it, is a part of it and hence can be afflicted by it.

This is to the confused and the ones feeling caught in a dilemma; From a student of life.

Do not succumb to fear out of the things that you read in this forum. Strengthen your confidence and belief in your one being. This is not about religion, because many so-called believers are in disarray and are being led like sheep to the slaughter house by foxes who have mastered the art of manipulation. Be "one" with yourself in spirit, and live life guided by your conscience. Not by indoctrination.

If God had put his breath into earth and made man, then his breath remains in each man for guidance. If you live life conscientiously, then allow no man to insert doubt into your spirit. If you are a part of God, then you are a god. In this, you should firmly believe. The manipulators realize that by creating doubts in your mind, they can find holes into your spirit. With this, they can siphon your powers and enslave your mind to their whims. Stay observant, but resolved. And remember that what goes around, come around. The good deeds that you perform will indeed secure peace and harmony in your life. When you fail, then first admit it to yourself, and then be repentant in spirit and ask for "the grace" to free you of the burden that you have afflicted yourself with. No man can see the light for you, it has to shine from within yourself. Seek knowledge, but embrace wisdom.

We are all spiritual beings, hence beware of whom you mix spirits with. Many carry afflictions that they are willing to pass unto your spirit, while they drain you of your good. It is consequently very important that you seek not in darkness, when you want to live in the light. Be aware of the paths that you have thread, and cleanse yourself immediately when you have sojourned around dirt and filth. You have to do this, to prevent the dirt from penetrating your skin into your spirit.

With these few guidelines, you can seek your truth and stay universal, as this is where you belong. Then you can be confident that your shield is strong, and neither mortals nor principalities can shirk you. You shall be Lord over them, and they shall fall at your feet.

Now Mr. Larez.

Let me take my time to enlighten you. JUJU is not beans. Its dosent work like a genie (you cant just want 5.5million and you will recieve it).
It is the likes of you that would watch a Chris Angel show and scream "JUJU" and come on Nairaland to such a thread a say there is nothing like JUJU.
If you doubt the powers of juju, go to your village and slap your eze mmuo (Cheif priest) or spit on your village alusi (deity) and see if you tongue will not touch the ground or if you dont end up mad or sterile for life.

If I asked you if you believed in God, I am sure you would say yes. But you dont believe in JUJU, that just plain stupid. I have seen juju do things that would make Oyakhilome and T.B Joshua look like apprentice magicians.

Remember, Obiediece is better than sacrifice. You have been warned.

I guess this is where I am supposed to begin shaking in my boots huh? Do you know how many shrines that I have pissed on already? My man, you are quite comical, and I am still laughing. Scam Scam Scam. This is the oldest trick. Fear has always been the biggest manipulator of men. You might as well understand one thing, If there is juju, then there are the protected ones as well. I am one of these beings. I have seen the face of death many times and walked away without a scratch. The so-called Babalawos pass by me and recognize me as a god. They start saying things about me and feel honoured to have been in my presence. Even in America, witches from Transylvania have bowed to me and acknowledged my powers. And guess what? I have never known any other powers but that of my Almighty Protector, and I confess his Son. I walk in confidence and have no doubts of overcoming any type of principalities that anyone may throw my way. Because to me, they don't exist, and only something that exists can affect me.

Now ask yourself this. How come they recognize me and confess the powers that protect me? How come they say with their own lips that I am untouchable? I believe that it is because they look in my eyes and see that fear does not exist. They see that I cannot be manipulated. They know that I am protected. However, I have learned to try and restrain myself from cursing people out of annoyance. Because if it comes out of my lips, so it shall be. Now, young Blood be extremely careful about who you warn. You may be trying to bite more than you can chew. Now take your hoolabulahlah and run along. There is no 419 game here for you to play.
