Travel › Re: Nigerian Airports Ready For Christmas - FAAN by laudate: 9:47pm On Dec 21, 2016 |
Which Christmas are they preparing for?? Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is the greatest joker among all the state-owned parastatals. They lack the simple skills to maintain ordinary toilets in their airports, and now they have the mouth to start saying they are ready for Christmas! Thunder fire their mouth! How Nigeria Killed Her Tourism By sonala.olumhense@gmail.com | Publish Date: Dec 18 2016 2:00AM | I wonder if there is anyone in authority in Nigeria who understands the brutal counsel offered recently by Ohis Ehimiaghe, Manager of the North, West and Central Africa Region for South African Airways.
Nigeria’s airports are the worst in his area of command, he told aviation journalists. In effect, Africa’s worst.
By his name, Mr. Ehimiaghe is a Nigerian. Evidently, his portfolio enables him to see a lot of airports. As a Nigerian, he is evidently hurt by what he has experienced.
But he is also a truthful and patriotic man, and in the interview, he came down hard and heavy on Nigeria’s airports, particularly the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
I quote Mr. Ehimiaghe: “Some of the facilities at [Nigeria’s] airports have completely collapsed and naturally irritate normal and rational passengers. For instance, if you decide to use the washroom facilities, your hormone system will definitely have challenges.
“Going through the MMIA is a challenge and very bad for usage by a rational being. The smallest airport under me is Cotonou Airport in Benin Republic. I can go to their toilets and come out with a smile on my face.
“We are not harassed by security agencies, unlike in Nigeria. We have scanning machines at our airports in Nigeria, so, why the harassment by the security agencies again in the country?”
Among other subjects, Mr. Ehimiaghe also reflected on the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria’s federal capital, Abuja. He stated that the runway was in such a poor state that in the weeks preceding his interview, at least four aircraft were damaged, one of them so badly that that it could not be used for over one week.
Somewhere, Nigerian officials are abusing the manager. It is the way we respond to a Nigerian of visibility who calls the government out. Twice before his death, Chinua Achebe rejected the government’s offer of a so-called National Honour, saying he could accept no such award from governments with no honour.
On both occasions, the government called the literary icon names. It is the tradition of Nigerian governments to denounce anyone who identifies their weaknesses, or as Achebe did, their connivance.
The irony is that Nigeria continues to deteriorate because of these governments, a fact that is best illustrated by our airports.
An airport is every nation’s economic, cultural and political border with every other nation and with the international community. When you see an airport, you can feel that country’s heartbeat.
In “First, Service the Engine of Change,” on June 5, 2016, I shared my thoughts of a Nigerian airport in words that were like Mr. Ehimiaghe’s:
“When you step into the restrooms, it is at your peril: the worst experience you can have in an airport, including war-ravaged Somalia, and I apologize to every Somali.”
I observed that the restrooms were not being maintained or really cleaned. “…The place is so wet and so repugnant your life begins to flash before your eyes. You remember, for sure, whether you have a will or not…”
Compare those remarks with Mr. Ehimiaghe’s: “The smallest airport under me is Cotonou Airport in Benin Republic. I can go to their toilets and come out with a smile on my face.”
While these comments address the airport environment, they are really a report of the collapse of the governance infrastructure in Nigeria. The website: www.sleepinginairports.net, which tracks the quality of airports around the world, routinely lists Nigerian airports among the worst. For 2016, one of ours is among the top two worst; and two of them are prominent in Africa’s worst 10.
We ought to be ashamed, but shame is not a characteristic of Nigerian governance. Of greater importance, we ought to be alarmed. This is because, while international travel, interests and journalism will always point out our aviation failures and therefore irritate the government perhaps into some action, there is no comparable exposure of the absence of governance in many other areas.

Instead of them to exhibit truth, righteousness, integrity and compassion in their dealings, as well as the fruits of the Holy Spirit.... they do the direct opposite. And when you ask them to change their ways, handle their responsibilities, fulfil their promises or meet their obligations, they tag you as an enemy, and rush to their respective MFM outlets to pray 'fall-down-and-die' prayers against you or any of their perceived enemies! Do they think they are fooling God? |

So what is the point? I had a mentor who got delayed in school because he flunked some courses and had to graduate a year after his mates had passed out of school. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It was during the era of the GSM start-ups with MTN, Celtel (now Airtel) etc. just coming up. He got recruited as a trainee project manager after youth corps, with one of them. His friends who had graduated earlier still sat at home for 2 years looking for jobs! |

Any criticism that does not point out a flaw in a constructive way, by stating exactly what the problem is or pointing out its redeeming features while acknowledging its shortcomings, and does not give insights into how such flaws can be remedied or amended, simply because the critic's primary goal is just to rubbish the person being criticised, or trash his/her creative efforts in a vitriolic way, is destructive. |

onomeasike: CHANGE IS MODESTY IN LEADERSHIP ~By Lawrence Ibe
Do you know that President Buhari's daughter got married last Friday (28/10/2016) in Daura, but the President stayed back in Abuja to attend to issues of national importance? He later joined them in the night to meet with guests and flew back to Abuja early Saturday morning to continue his work.
Do you also remember two years ago (12/04/2014) when former President Jonathan's adopted daughter got married? A huge jamboree of an extravagant wedding was staged while billions of Naira were expended. Customized gold plated IPhones were given as gifts to everyone privileged to be in the reception hall. The best of foreign wines were served. Abundance of food was in offer and the best of entertainers were hired to keep guests entertained while they dined and wined. In return, the bride was d "dashed" over 80 exotic brand new cars, including houses by those her father bragged to have made wealthy.
The worst of it all was that state functions nationwide were suspended, all government activities were put on hold because Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's daughter was wedding; all roads led to Bayelsa. That weekend was madness because the entire administration of governance in Nigeria was suspended because the President's daughter was getting married. People were falling over themselves to show favour to the President's daughter in an anticipation that their goodwill would be reciprocated by GEJ.
Now the case is different. The contrast is that, here we have another sitting President whose daughter got married and you did not even know about it because it wasn't made a state function. It was a very modest wedding and simply family affair. This is what leadership is: a leader not using his political position to attract wordly gains to himself. I can also tell you that some people wanted to make this wedding a state affair, a lavish, expensive and glamorous wedding; but President Buhari rejected that proposal and only insisted it must be modest and a family affair devoid of waste and ostentation.
This post is not meant to praise anyone but to sample an attitude every political office holder must emulate. A life of modesty, simplicity and not abusing ones political office for self aggrandizement. This time around, all roads did not lead to Daura. If this is not change, what is it https://thenigerian.ng/opinion-change-modesty-leadership-lawrence-ibe/ Oya, Zahra Buhari's wedding to Indimi's son has started. Over 10 private jets landed in the North, carrying important dignitaries that were invited for the wedding. The invitations were etched in gold and made of the most expensive stationery around. The wedding gifts for the bride were packaged in Louis Vuitton original cases costing thousands of US dollars. And that was only for the engagement, o! Oga, we are waiting for you to do a similar comparison of Zahra Buhari's wedding with that of GEJ's daughter..... please do not disappoint us!! |

vodutive: It is not ignorance. You and the ones sensationalising this are the ones displaying your ignorance
1. You might not realise this going by the cowboy manner we do things in this country but in well organised environments, when it comes to official correspondence or statements, there is official protocol. You do not make official comments on what is not is not within your jurisdiction.
2. DPR is not an agency of NNPC and so he has no authority or mandate to comment on the workings of the DPR. Anything he says is hearsay because it is not within his authority.
3) Like I said If I were in his shoes I would give the same answer. anybody can google the concession map, which means the house members also have the information. So when they ask hi that sort of question they are asking him for the record and he has no mandate to answer in an official capacity because as he told them, it is the jurisdiction of the DPR. If they want an OFFICIAL ,ON THE RECORD response, they should ask the official record keeper.
The problem with many of you Nigerians up in arms is that standards have dropped over the decades and many of you are not schooled in the proper way of doing things especially in an organization. You will never find one agency commenting on the business of another parallel agency in any civilised environment "on the record!" because anything issued by any government agency is an official gazzette and the contents become official and has legal implications. Correct!! May you live long, o jare... |
