That's why i always advocate for skills development before even jumping into the university of within your year of service...

They say: “Making money is about exchanging value” “So provide value and you will make money”.
And so you go out and create a product, or a service or start a business and you find out that:
Providing value is ONE THING, getting people to want that value you have provided is another thing.
And that is when you realize that this life is not balanced.
It now hits you that all the Shalaye aside, What really makes you money is not the value you provide, it is knowing how to convince people to pay for the value you provide.

Bitter truth

I had a boss that learn welding and fabrication in a technical college, Ibadan. He was in school when he was hired to work for Agip as a welder. Halliburton hired him by paying double of what Agip paid. He later work for Total & Mobil. He earned millions before he proceeded to University to study Civil Engineer and got his first and second degree. Now, the same technical school is nothing to write home about.

Dangote is building Refinery in Lagos, a large number of Technicians working there are of Asian origin. Asians dominate many of our oil company in Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Lagos & PHC working as Technicians. You are likely to hire those from Togo, Benin Republic when you have to hire tilers, POP fabrication, masonry, and carpentry for building projects. Amidst our huge population, we still depend on foreigners to fix our problems for us, but it seems these people have better skilled, better work ethics and are very good at what they do.

Technology and technical knowledge and skills are the way to go. With our population what we need is to develop a sound Technology and technical education system. Our curriculum is bereft of practical but theoretical. We need system that will empower our people with skills. We must revive the technical education and form technology skill system so that we can provide the needed skills to our people and be self-reliant nation. The earlier we start the better for the country.

I will be ending this article by quoting Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami on the paper he titled "Skills Rather Than Just Degrees" and the 10 lessons.

1. In today's rapidly changing world, academic qualifications alone are no longer enough to secure a successful career.

2. Skills are the new currency of the job market, and those who possess them are the ones most likely to succeed.

3. We must invest in vocational education and training, to ensure that our workforce has the skills needed to compete in a global economy.
