Obviously no one took Jon's bend the knee very seriously. No one really thought of the consequences until this season started.

i disagree! A first in that category, Robert didn't drink to battle in my recollection! Thoros scaled the breach at pyke drunk ahead of everyone wielding his flaming sword and metting out death which he didn't remember when sober, he was also a repeated melee champion, drunk again! Give me a Robert baratheon drunk event to rival

The book might have said Robert took to thoros because he rivaled him in the cups, i think a more apt description would be that Robert took to him because he exceeded him in one of his passions(drinking) and rivaled him in another(fighting), whoring and gluttonous consumption were Roberts outright forte
